Apple likes to create stunningly beautiful technology, but sometimes it may appear that they are simply imitating others and slapping on the word “Magic” or “Super” to create unique branding. This situation may be the case with a very Microsoft Surface-style keyboard cover that Apple is trying to patent. We say 'trying' because Apple is only applying for the patent, but they have not yet been granted one. That process could take months or even years before it is approved.

If you have been thinking about preordering Microsoft’s Surface 2, you might want to hurry up and get your order in. According to Microsoft, the new device has been selling like “hotcakes” (yes, they were that cliché) and they expect the Surface 2 (64 GB) and Surface Pro 2 (256 GB and 512 GB) are “close to selling out.”

Last night, Windows Phone Central reported that Microsoft Stores were poised to reduce the cost of the Touch Cover from the current $119.99 to a more favorable $79.99. That reduction includes all five colors and is set to occur on August 30th online and in Microsoft Stores. The price drop is permanent and not a sale.

We can also now confirm that the Surface RT bundle, which includes both the Surface RT device and a black Touch Cover, will also reflect that price decrease. Currently, customers can buy the Surface RT with either 32GB or 64GB and a bundled black Touch Cover for $449 and $549, respectively.

If you have a Surface RT or Surface Pro and were thinking of picking up one of the colorful Touch Covers, you may want to hold off for eight more days. It has been revealed to Windows Phone Central that Microsoft is planning to drop the price on the accessory from the regular $119 to a more reasonable $79.99.

The new price will be permanent.

The Touch Cover was one of two keyboard accessories that launched with the Surface RT late last year, the other being the more robust Type Cover with mechanical keys. There is no evidence to suggest the Type Cover will receive a similar discount but we’re waiting on more information to see if that changes.

If you are a Surface owner who misses using the function row without having to reach for the “Fn” key every time, don’t worry - Microsoft has you covered.  A new update, coming next week, for Microsoft’s Touch Cover and Type Cover keyboards will allow users to lock the top row of keys into their “F1-F12” states.  Simply hit “Fn + Caps” and the behavior of the top row of keys will be swapped, hit it again to return back to default.

In addition, Microsoft will be adding a collection of new hotkey combinations that will allow users to perform the actions of missing keys such as: Print Screen, Home, End, Page Up/Down, and more. A full list of the updated hotkeys can be seen after the break.

Today Dell announced its latest carbon fiber and aluminum creation, the XPS 11. The manufacturer’s latest machine features a beautiful design and 2560 x 1440 resolution. In addition, Dell takes a cue from Lenovo’s IdeaPad YOGA and introduces a hinge that allows the screen to flip back 360-degrees behind the keyboard.

Did we mention that Dell flattened the keyboard so much that you might confuse it with a Microsoft Touch Cover? We don't know about you, but to us, one of the main factors laptop machines still have going for themselves, over their tablet counterparts, are the keyboards. Why Dell, why?

Microsoft is making it cheaper and more convenient for consumers to personalise hardware. To join the deal that has been featured in Europe, Microsoft has unleashed a free Touch (including limited editions) and Type cover offer for consumers when Surface RT Windows 8 tablets are purchased. It's a limited time offer and has only just kicked off, but we're pleased to see such a bundle arise to help push more units.

Until recently, the largest amount of storage you could pick up for a Microsoft Surface Pro has been 128 GB. Now a version of the tablet has surfaced in Japan with 256 GB and a 120,000 YEN price tag (approx. $ 1,200).

The new larger capacity sized Microsoft tablet will also include a pre-installed copy of Office 2013 Home and Business. Only Surface RT tablets have come pre-installed with Microsoft’s productivity suite, so this marks a first for the Pro model.

We’ve got quite the variety when you look at the sea of tablets, slates, ultrabooks, and convertibles we have now in the Windows 8 landscape. Crazy designs like the ThinkPad Yoga and Dell XPS 12 spring to mind when thinking of the different ways manufactures have differentiated themselves.

Microsoft threw a wrench into the traditional PC world last June when it announced the Surface family of devices. The Surface is also unique in its design and has recently been awarded a design patent for it's Touch keyboard cover and magnetic coupling.

We've heard rumblings about the Microsoft Surface RT Touch Cover coming un-raveled along the connector. The plastic shell on the keyboard separates and exposes the connecting wires. Not a really good situation.

The separation looks as if it is caused when you fold the keyboard over behind the Surface and the plastic shell is stretched too far and comes loose. If you're having problems with the Surface Touch Cover, while a roll of duct tape could fix the problem, there's a better solutions.  Here's what you need to do.

If you haven't picked up a Surface yet and have been waiting for an incentive, here's one. On Black Friday the first 100 people to buy a Surface in a Microsoft retail store will get a special 'Designed for Surface' protective sleeve.

While you're not getting a discount on the tablet device itselt, it's still a $50 item thrown in that you'll probably put to good. Gotta protect that VaporMG casing! It's a nice little deal for those who were already looking on buying a Surface and happen to have a retail Microsoft Store around, maybe like the one in Canada that just opened.

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablets have only recently been made available as part of a limited pre-order. The least expensive option, the Surface 32GB without the touch cover has now sold out in Canada too.

The UK is also showing stock of the 32GB device to be unavailable with only the two more expensive options being present.

With pre-order stocks already selling through its tempting to start speculation on numbers and success. Microsoft certainly hasn't mentioned numbers and are very unlikely to do so unless they have something big to announce. If they are seeking to create some excitement around availability, selling out of an option certainly grabs attention and with it comes some urgency to be “first” or not to miss out.
