Trapster updated to version 1.2, goes International

Trapster is a Windows Phone app designed to help you avoid speed traps, avoid traffic jams, and generally have a safer time on the road. The app was recently updated to version 1.2 to bring a handful of performance improvements as well as a new map and more language support.

For those not familiar Trapster is a social network app where users post alerts to speed traps, red light and speed cameras as well as accidents and other roadway hazards. These dangers are mapped out to allow you to worry less about getting a ticket and better concentrate on driving.

Trapster is finally making the move to Windows Phone. For those not familiar, Trapster first came onto the scene back in the Windows Mobile days (here's our review from way back when) and is a rather interesting app.  The driving app has left the Beta Stage and is headed to the open Marketplace.

Trapster is a social network app for your Windows Phone designed to alert you of speed traps and other road hazards. Trapster relies on a network of over 15 million users who have reported a total of 5 million Traps to date. Keep in mind though, Trapster isn't intended to help you skirt the long arm of the law but rather drive more safely.

Along with reporting the Traps you see via the convenient Report button, Trapster will also have these features:

  • Speedometer that tracks your speed and changes colors from orange to red to indicate the amount you are driving over the set speed limit.
  • Sound Themes that includes Knight Rider, Yogi the Bear, and Austin Powers.
  • Support for six languages including English, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic and Spanish.
  • Support for Terrain or Satellite map views.
  • NAVTEQ Traffic integration to provide real time traffic and incident alerts.
  • Map indicators or Patrol Lines to show where other Trapster users have traveled.
  • Map support for user selected Points of Interest.

Trapster information and services can also be accessed through their website at Trapster.com. We have been told Trapster will be available on the Windows Phone Marketplace within the next day or so.

Trapster is expected be a free app and we'll update the post with the link once it goes live.

Update: Well that didn't take long.  Trapster just went live over at the Marketplace.  It is a free app for your Windows Phone and you can find it here.

Trapster was a popular Windows Mobile application that relied on a social network to identify speed traps. The reports would then populate a map for mobile and desktop access. While we don't endorse speeding, we did find Trapster to be a handy app to alert you of speed traps and avoid unwanted tickets.

The developer has been working on a Windows Phone version of Trapster for some time and is now looking for Beta Testers. To add to the incentive of becoming a Trapster Beta Tester, anyone sending in feedback on the app will become eligible to win a $500 gift card.

If interested, you can find the Beta Tester sign up form here and skip on past the break to read the fine print from Trapster on the gift card contest.  Safe driving everyone!

Trapster Contest Winners!

Last week we announced the Trapster would be heading to the Windows Phone Marketplace and had a little contest for an Official Trapster license plate frame. You just needed to tweet, "@Trapster announces #WP7 app is in the works on @WPCentral http://bit.ly/kxqLjz"

From the thirty some odd readers who tweeted, we randomly selected ten winners. They are:

mydefposse, ParkerReno, a_hardin, RaceStream, revamp00, Goodeye, purevibz, metsfan421, firecop42, and davidremy.

Congratulations to all and we've got the Trapster swag ready to ship out.  But here in lies the problem we have run into. We've private messaged the winners through Twitter to get their shipping information. But only two have replied (mydefposse and ParkerReno). So... if you're one of the winners, private message @WPCentral with your shipping info.  We'll get the license plate covers out to you as soon as we know where to send it.

Again, congratulations to all the winners!

For those of you who remember Trapster (see site) on Windows Mobile (see our review from 2010), you'll be excited to know that an official Windows Phone 7 version is right around the corner. If you haven't heard of Trapster yet, well, it's basically a social-network for us daily road warriors, a way to communicate the important stuff to other drivers, via you smartphone:

Users submit speed traps, enforcement cameras, and road hazards, that then alert all Trapster users in the area. A high-tech version of flashing your headlights to alert drivers of potential road hazards

Their system has not only proved to be successful, but very popular  with nearly 12 million registered users as it's available on iOS, BlackBerry, Android and 3rd party GPS devices (Garmin, TomTom). In fact, we're told that July is the target for release for the free app, meaning this a lot closer than "in the works". The WP7 version, developed by Chaotic Moon Studios, supports all the latest bells & whistles found on other platforms:

  • Live Tile
  • Search
  • Directions
  • My Trips (share trips with others)
  • Caravan (see your Trapster friends on the map)
  • Audio Player Controls
  • Real Time Traffic

And to celebrate the occasion, in conjunction with the fine folks at Trapster, we have 10 license plate frames up for grabs with a simple task--simply Tweet the line below by midnight (EST) on May 14, 2010 and we'll randomly choose 10 winners:

@Trapster announces #WP7 app is in the works on @WPCentral http://bit.ly/kxqLjz

We're excited about this major title coming to Windows Phone 7 as it's just another feather in the hat for our fledgling OS, plus we who doesn't want to drive safer (and not get a speeding ticket?).

Review: Trapster

I can remember a time that CB Radios and FuzzBusters were the craze to keep track of where the "Smokies" and "Bears" were hiding.  Today, in this high-tech era full of social networking applications a new solution has been released to help motorist find out where speed traps are.

Trapster is a Windows Mobile application that relies on a social network to identify speed traps and then maps them for mobile and desktop access.  Trapster's membership covers international locations as well as the U.S.

While we don't endorse speeding, if you want to know more about Trapster, ease on past the break.
