treasure tag

File this under ‘beware early adopters’, but in case you haven’t heard, Verizon has started selling the $29.99 Nokia Treasure Tag accessory. Pairing via NFC and Bluetooth, the little gizmo allows you to track via HERE Maps whatever possession you attach it to, making it perfect for your keys or new baby (I jest).

Unfortunately, if you buy one today – like I did – then you’ll find yourself with a useless purchase if you’re on Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers. That’s because it says you need Lumia Cyan for it to work. As a reminder, Lumia Cyan is the forthcoming firmware update that will roll out with Windows Phone 8.1 in the coming weeks and months.

If you looked at Nokia's diminutive Treasure Tag WS-2 and said "I like the idea, but that's too much of a thing", then the Treasure Tag Mini WS-10 might just be the Bluetooth beacon for you. It popped up recently with nary an announcement from Nokia, and it's a little 'un. Measuring in at the same 30mm x 30mm face, the Treasure Tag Mini is nearly half the as thin (5.8 mm vs. the full size's 10mm) and less than half as heavy (6.2g vs. 13g). It's a darned light and little tag, but with that save bulk you lose some features.

The Nokia Treasure Tags are now available at Verizon Wireless, with three colors listed on the carrier website. Priced at $29.99, these handy accessories can be attached to valuable possessions to prevent one from misplacing and subsequently losing said objects. The tags will alert the owner via an app if they're about to leave the tagged object(s) behind.

Microsoft Mobile – or what we’ll still to refer to as Nokia for now – has been busy this morning, pushing out no less than five updates for some of their Lumia system software. These are those little apps that help things run smoothly on your device, and are considered pretty important.

Of course, that implies we know what was fixed and in this case, we don’t. However, you can guess at the usual bug fixes, and we wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few optimizations for Windows Phone 8.1 devices (fingers crossed). Regardless, there’s no harm in doing these updates, so let’s have at ‘em.

Nokia is expected to unveil quite a few new devices next month in UAE for what may be their final Nokia World. Whether it is the Lumia 1520 or their tablet, the rumored Lumia 2520, Nokia is sure to have a great show.

One of those items due for release will be the Bluetooth charm called ‘Treasure Tag’. The item will reportedly work with Bluetooth 4.0 LE devices and allow users to track things like keys, bags or whatever it is attached too. NFC will be on board too for quick and easy pairing. As the Verge reported earlier this summer, the device will have a button on it to ID phones that it is attached to and its battery should last 6 months while always being on.

We’re filing this one under unsubstantiated rumor, but forum member qXerro has posted a few more screenshots over the last twenty-four hours of Windows Phone 8.1. The problem with such stories of course is trying to verify the information and since screenshots can be very easily faked, it’s hard to justify.

Still, qXerro has posted screenshots of features like app sorting before. That rings a bell because we know of that feature but never reported it publicly—so either he’s a good guesser or there is some truth to his leaks (Unfortunately, the last we heard is that app sorting was removed due to ongoing issues).

Nokia is looking to launch a proximity sensor accessory for Lumia Windows Phones, according to sources familiar with company plans.
