twitter apps

Like Readit, the app Tweet It! gets my Editor’s Choice for best third-party Twitter client. It’s constantly being updated and improved with some seriously cool features. Recently, the developer Timur Khamidov has been cranking away at updates, and the latest version is truly a fascinating one.

Many in our audience are using the Windows Phone 8 Update 3 Developer Preview. That OS update allows custom notifications and more specifically, for developers to add the ability for their own sounds to their creations. Quite a few of you have requested developers do this and we’re happy to report that Tweet It! now has this as an option.

Head past the break to learn about the rest of the amazing new things in Tweet It! version 7.8!

My Editor's Choice for third-party Twitter apps gets another fantastic update

We all have our favorite Twitter apps on Windows Phone. Mine is Tweet It!

Sure, the official Twitter app is a looker but if you need something with a little more power, you turn to third-party apps to deliver. Tweet It! is that app for me because not only does it look great, but it has some unique and clever features that no other Twitter app can boast. In fact, I’m always calling it ‘clever’ and version 7.0.2.0 is no different.

So what’s so cool about Tweet It! that has me using all of these descriptors? Head past the break to see what’s new.

One area that Windows Phone is equal to in regards to Android and iOS is the number of high quality Twitter applications. On all platforms there are a handful of excellent Twitter clients, both official and third-party for nearly anyone. Whether you’re a casual user just following the tweets of celebrities or a social media powerhouse needing advanced features, you’ll find a Twitter app for you. Peregrine is one of those Twitter apps on Windows Phone that is really, really good. The latest update to Peregrine makes it even better.

When it comes to Twitter clients on Windows Phone, we’ve noticed everyone has their favorite and its usually for specific reasons. Tweet It! by developer Timur Khamidov has always impressed us for standing out from the pack.  The app comes with numerous unique options like a using the camera for a background, so you can see where you walking when typing, orientation lock, tweet your currently playing music and more.

Version 6.2 just went live in the Store and it’s quite a colossal update. The update and changes are so big, we would have thought it was a worthy of a 7.0 designation.  Let’s see what’s new.

If you're just picking up a new Windows Phone, re-installing your favorite Twitter app or trying out a new one today (and for the next few days), you may have some problems logging in.

As happens from time to time, Twitter has changed their OAuth decompression method sometime last night and numerous 3rd party Twitter clients are affected. We're told by Scott Peterson, developer of the Twitter app glƏƏk! that it affects "...any Silverlight Mobile Windows Phone client that uses the non-PIN authentication, and doesn’t not expect a GZip response"

As a result, those devs will need to quickly make a slight change in their apps and re-submit to the Marketplace. That means for at least the next 3-5 days there will be issues creating initial accounts (if you already have Twitter setup, the apps will continue to work just fine).

Peterson also believes that Twitter could change the OAuth for PIN-based/Silverlight mobile clients as well in the next few days, which makes sense. glƏƏk! has been updated and submitted but it won't be available until early next week in the Marketplace.

We sure do love Twitter apps and even though Mango goes a long way for most people, there are those who still want a dedicated client with more features on board.

TweeterLight isn't exactly new, heck it just hit v1.4, but it's one we missed when it came out. Turns out it's a pretty solid client. As you can tell by its name, it is meant to be light and fast, so if you're looking for a Swiss Army knife of functions, this isn't for you. Then again, it does have a nice feature set and the speed make up for it for many of us.

It does support Read It Later, uploading of pics, geolocaton, contact look up (using a list picker) and trends. Plus with v1.4, it is now Mango ready. It also highlights new, unread Tweets, making management a bit easier.

Overall we dig TweeterLight a lot--it's fast, supports full landscape mode and has a nice UI. Sure a Live Tile wouldn't hurt but for $0.99 with a free trial, it is certainly worthy of consideration if speed is your concern.

Pick up TweeterLight here in the Marketplace.
