twitter

We mentioned Tweetro recently when we interviewed developer house LazyWorm Apps who are also behind the Windows Phone app MetroTube. The Twitter client is meant for Windows 8 and runs quite well on RT devices like the Surface. Unfortunately, it has also stopped working.

That’s not the fault of the developers though but rather due to in part to two reasons (1) it’s very popular (as is the OS) and (2) Twitter has a 100K token cap.  Long story short, Twitter implemented new changes to how their API is used for third-party apps and it's causing problems--if an app goes over that "token limit", they get shut down and stop working.

Official Twitter Client for Windows Phone 8 updated

Seems like the minor tweaks and adjustments for apps for Windows Phone 8 keep on coming, this time it’s the official Twitter client.

The update is now showing as version 1.3 for Windows Phone 8 while the Windows Phone 7 version is holding steady at 1.2. A quick scan of the changes doesn’t reveal an awful lot of changes so we’re putting this one down to some general tweaking in the absence of any change notes.

Although Windows Phone 8 is technically out most users are still waiting to get their hands on the new OS. Luckily, we're already seeing some major apps get bumped with new features such as CNN, SkyDrive and even Nokia's apps.

Rowi Twitter app is one of the more popular apps on the Windows Phone Store and they just posted a video showing off the new super-quick load time. The increase in speed is due to Windows Phone 8 just handling app launching and processing more efficiently, those 1.5GHz dual-core CPUs and in this case by removing the boot screen. The app also has the "fast resume" trick enabled whereby tapping the Live Tile after it is already running will not re-launch the app but instead just resume it.

No word on release but hopefully it won't be too long.

Microsoft has unleashed its Windows 8 hardware on Twitter by opening up the @Surface account. Surface Windows 8 tablets from the software giant will be its first major leap into hardware for its Windows operating system, excluding mice, keyboards and other peripherals, of course.

So far the account has published two tweets, one linking followers to a playlist of Surface videos, which contains only one thus far - it's the original video we all witnessed earlier in the year showing off what appeared to be a unique Windows 8 tablet of some sort - while the other promotes the music used in the Surface video.

Nokia's Windows Phone 8 line-up

We've seen Nokia poke fun at Samsung in the past by welcoming the company back to Windows Phone, as well as attacking its Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 marketing campaign. Nokia has failed to show signs of ceasing, and now the Finnish manufacturer has taken to Twitter in Italy to slam competing manufacturers and boast the specifications of the Lumia 920. The flagship Windows Phone is the company's bottled hopes and dreams running Microsoft's next generation mobile operating system.

Moolicious. And temporarily free.

Twitter apps are like shoes—everyone has their favorite and there is tons of variety out there. The client glƏƏk! has been quite popular lately what with its unique design and more rare features like “Extras”, “glƏƏks”, “pƏƏks”. But what if those distinctive add-ons are just not your thang?

Enter in Cowlick! It’s light in a few ways: for one, it is light themed and two, it doesn’t have those aforementioned features. Instead, you’re left with just a really robust and awesome Twitter client.

Behold, Cumulotweetus

The latest update to the super popular glƏƏk! Twitter client gave users the ability to create ‘Tweet clouds’ within the app. A Tweet cloud is basically a collection of words and phrases associated with a specific person on Twitter.

The addition proved to be so popular that favorite Windows Phone dev Liquid Daffodil decided to make a whole app dedicated to just that feature, but with even more control and options.

And thus Cumulotweetus was born and is now ready for download.

Carbon, has left the building...

Say what you will about Twitter clients, but the developers behind them can be a finicky bunch from our experience. That notion is being reinforced again today with the announcement that Carbon has been pulled from the Windows Phone Store for good.

The man behind Carbon, M.Saleh Esmaeili, took to his Google+ page to discuss what had happened after his interview on our podcast, Iterate. In short, Carbon was never meant to be multi-platform.

To the left, Twitter and to the right, reportedly Facebook notifications

Looks like Nokia’s New York City announcement is the gift that keeps on giving. Such is the case from the newly observed Twitter and Facebook notifications on the Lock screen during the introduction of the wireless charging part of the presentation. (Although Twitter is clear as day for us, we're still  not sure about the Facebook one--it's quite hard to tell.)

Not too long ago Liquid Daffodil offered all their Windows Phone apps for free.  Due to a glitch in the system the freebie offer for glƏƏk! was delayed just a bit.  glƏƏk! is a very nice Twitter client for your Windows Phone and we wanted to remind you that the free offer from Liquid Daffodil runs out in 24 hours.

The other apps from Liquid Daffodil have already returned to their regularly scheduled pricing points and once this special ends, glƏƏk! will return to it's $1.99 price.

If you're looking for a feature rich Twitter app for your Windows Phone at a steal of a deal, give glƏƏk! a try.  You can find glƏƏk! here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Nokia has painted a Peugeot 107 in Lumia colours following a tweet from Damien in Wexford, Ireland, who stated that he’d let the Finnish Windows Phone manufacturer add something extra to his car for a new Lumia 900. This was an odd request, but one Nokia simply couldn’t pass on.

Not only does it provide free advertising for the Windows Phone platform and the Lumia family of smartphones, but it also engages the social community with another "wow" marketing stunt.

Twitter has announced some sweeping changes to their all-important application programming interface or just API. This API is essential plumbing to allow application developers access to the “fire hose” of data from twitter. It has been no secret that Twitter wish to tighten their grip ever more over whom can access their system. With their latest set of guidelines, they show they mean business.

As Windows Phone users, we are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to third party twitter apps, with the likes of Rowi, Carbon, glƏƏk!, Mehdoh and Birdsong (to name drop a few). The new API could mean real headaches for those trying to differentiate with their Twitter client...

The evolution of Twitter on your Windows Phone continues with the most recent change being how the 'via' appears. We started with tweets from our Windows Phones as being referenced as "via Windows Live". Then Twitter become more tightly integrated with our People Hub.

About that same time the "via Windows Live" was changed to "via Microsoft". Now today, if you'll notice, the via has changed yet again.

Birdsong, a Windows Phone Twitter app, experienced a little technical difficulties with Live Tile and push notifications. The developers have worked diligently over the past few weeks and the new push notification service went online just a little while ago.

Birdsong is a nicely laid out Twitter app for your Windows Phone that supports multiple accounts, threaded conversations, geo-tagged tweets, off line viewing and much more.

The offiical Twitter app's new Toast push-notification in action

If there was one nagging issue with the official Twitter app for Windows Phone, it was the inability to get Toast notifications for new mentions or re-Tweets. Even after receiving a new update just 3 weeks ago, there was still no sign of any of these advanced features.

So we were a tiny bit flabbergasted to actually see a new notification section in the latest update, version 1.2.4555.39631 (or just v1.5 in the Marketplace) which just went live tonight. The updated Notification area has the following options

  • Mentions - Off, From people you follow, From anyone
  • Favorited Off, From people you follow, From anyone
  • retweetsOff, From people you follow, From anyone
  • Direct messages
  • New followers

That's actually a fairly robust selection of possible notifications for Twitter these days and yes, they are the Push type i.e. nearly instant. What's more, while there is seemingly no Live Tile counter, the Tiles does flip to show you new mentions or notifications in addition to the Toast alerts (which work quite fast from our experience).

While there is no counter, the Live Tile flips to show mentions

While it may have taken nearly two years to get this feature on Twitter, we are just going to sit in awe now and enjoy what we have.

Pick up the official Twitter app (v1.5) for Windows Phone now in the Marketplace. Thanks, Osvaldo C., for the tip
