updates

When I reviewed Order & Chaos Online last week, I didn’t beat around the bush – I called it the single best Xbox Windows Phone game. No other game compares in scale, depth, or online multiplayer functionality. But that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect game, either. Like any big game it suffers from an assortment of bugs and glitches.

On Friday, Gameloft published what will hopefully be the first of many Order & Chaos Online updates. This particular update (which requires users to redownload the full 1012 MB game) doesn’t fix all of the known bugs, but at least it’s a start. Head past the break for details!

A few weeks back we showed you guys Grin for Windows Phone. It was (and still is) the best app for accessing Imgur (www.imgur.com) on Windows Phone, a site dedicated to free image hosting and sharing, often considered to power sites like Reddit. The latest update that came out today widens the gap between itself and any potential third-party Imgur apps. Let’s check it out.

ProShot is a feature rich camera app for our Windows Phone 8 devices. The app gives users greater control over their Windows Phone camera with settings ranging from shutter speed to white balance to focusing.

ProShot was updated today to version 2.8.2 that raises the ceiling on the app's shutter speed, adds a few more timer options, allows the application to retain manual focus position when switching between auto focus and manual focus, adding diagonal and golden ratio grid line options, as well as a few bug fixes and performance improvements.

When we reviewed indie brick breaking game Inflexiball a couple of months ago, our resident Brazilian reader Guilherme quickly noticed that the game was not available in the Brazilian Windows Phone Store. We gave publisher Renatus Media a shout to find out why the game skipped over good ol’ Brazil. No, it wasn’t due to riots or Angry Birds attacks!

As it turns out, Inflexiball didn’t release in Brazil for the same reason every other game passes over the South American nation: Brazil’s strict and somewhat confusing software ratings requirements. It just so happens that we published a guide to releasing software in Brazil a few months back. Renatus put it to use and Inflexiball has just launched there at last.

Brazilian Inflexiball fans aren’t the only ones with occasion to celebrate today. Renatus has also just released a new update to the game that doubles it length! Details and impressions after the break.

Bell Mobility is rolling out the GDR2 update to their Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone. A leaked internal document from the Canadian wireless provider notes the update will improve battery life, add Data Sense, improve the camera and photo viewer, as well as improvements to the Maps application, SMS and Bluetooth performance.

If you are a Bell Mobility customer sporting the ATIV S, you should see the update notification by August 5th. Not sure if you can use the "check for updates" feature in the Settings and see it sooner but it's worth a try.

Nokia Pro Cam is a camera app that is currently only available on the new Lumia 1020. It reminds me a lot of the Windows Phone photography app ProShot or Camera360 in that Pro Cam gives you more control over the camera's settings.

While the Lumia 1020 is just hitting store shelves today, the Pro Cam app is seeing its first consumer update. The update for version 1.6.0.2 brings more user control to the table with a bracketing setting.

Two popular photography apps for your Windows Phone 8 devices has been updated. ProShot and Camera360 both have received updates that mainly address fixes and tweaks to their user interfaces.

ProShot jumps to version 2.8 and adds a new focus dial with fixes for the burst mode and UI tweaks. The focus dial sits to the side of the viewfinder and is a nice addition and should be more convenient for those who prefer to manually focus on things.

Samsung has released a number of updates for its collection of apps on Windows Phone. The manufacturer has an array of apps for consumers to enjoy in the Samsung Zone, which can be accessed from the Windows Phone Store main menu. Unfortunately no change logs have been supplied so we're not entirely sure what's new. That said, it's good to see Samsung continuing to support customers.

HD Photo Viewer is a Pictures Hub alternative for our Windows Phone 8 devices. The native Windows Phone Pictures Hub reduces image resolution to improve performance and speed when you pan/zoom images. HD Photo Viewer maintains the original resolution giving your photos a sharper look.  Especially when you are viewing larger DSLR images from your Windows Phone.

The version 3.0.1 update adds a few basic editing tools to HD Photo Viewer and cinemagraph support for viewing and sharing your animated .gif files. The update also adds the ability to email full resolution photos as attachments.

Because indie games usually come from very small teams, their developers tend to take personal responsibility for their games’ shortcomings and actively work to improve them. Such is the case with Tainicom, the Greek developer responsible for The World of Dr. Pickaxe (a pinball game) on Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

Only two months after the Windows 8 and RT version of Dr. Pickaxe debuted, this week’s update fixes practically every complaint from our previous article. It adds a bunch of new features like Xbox 360 controller support as well. See all the improvements in our video after the break!

If you're sitting around waiting for an update to Kik Messenger for Windows Phone, it may be some time before you see an update notification for the popular IM app. That's the bad news.

Why? According to Kik Messenger CEO Ted Livingston the app hasn't been updated to Windows Phone 8 due to Microsoft not supporting Webkit standard in Windows Phone 8. Webkit is an open source HTML 5 standard that is supported by iOS and Android. Without support for Webkit, it becomes more difficult and challenging for Kik to update to a Windows Phone 8 version.

But all is not lost....
