Virgin Mobile

Virgin Media and EE have both announced an extension to the MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) partnership for Virgin Mobile, the UK's largest (and oldest) MVNO to continue operations with over three million customers to boot. EE has the largest network coverage in the UK, along with the controversial head start with 4G, both likely played a major deciding factor in the deal.

The Canadian carrier Virgin Mobile is looking for beta testers to try out new mobile phones the company will be stocking. This is also including the HTC 8S where if you register your interest (and are chosen) you'll receive the device and it could well be yours to keep for free. It's simple to get involved and the potential reward is a brand new Windows Phone.

Although HTC has no immediate plans for US pickup of their fancy 8S Windows Phone, that isn’t stopping Virgin Mobile Canada from offering it to their customers.

The phone is now listed on the site for what seems like affordable pricing at $79 on contract and just $279 pre-paid/off-contract. That’s actually not a bad deal for those looking to pick up a mid-range Windows Phone 8 device with an eye-catching design...

Virgin Mobile in South Africa is typically a bit behind the rest of the crowd. In-fact, it's only recently that they have realized that smart-phones should probably be on their offerings. And compared to the other service providers, they have a fraction of the subscribers.

So while some countries are celebrating the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900, it's with joyful surprise that we can now let you know that Virgin Mobile's latest specials pamphlet has both the Nokia Lumia 800 and the mid-range Lumia 710! The deals aren't too shabby either, especially the 710 where you are given close to your monthly subscription in airtime, plus 1000 SMS's! The deals are valid until the 6th June 2012.

That's good news for two reasons. First, Vodacom's exclusivity over the Lumia 800 has now ended, and second, if you really want a Lumia but don't want to port to Vodacom, then here is another option. And Virgin Mobile isn't actually all that bad. Their call prices are pretty competitive (especially if you manage to find another VM user to call), and R0.60 per MB out-of-bundle is about the cheapest you will find locally. For the entertainment of the international folk, R0.60 converts to $0.08 per MB of data.

It is rather strange that such a small provider can offer these phones before Vodacom's main competition, MTN. But it seems like you shouldn't be holding your breath if you are with them.

Virgin Mobile even has information we don't, and has uncovered that the Lumia 800's actual name is the E6! Yip, another branding fail...

"The Nokia Lumia has arrived!" reads the bold headline in this Australian newspaper TeleChoice flyer. Celebrating the launch of the Lumia handsets, as well as the "Lumia Live" events that are being held this month around the country, it's good to see such exposure.

The Lumia 710 was also advertised in the MX newspaper yesterday, but these are all device specific promotions so we're still looking at Microsoft (or other OEMs) to pick up some of the weight that's holding down the platform.

Thanks Michael for sending in the photo!
