Toy Pirates is a naval combat game for our Windows Phones that has you controlling a small pirate ship that must navigate the high seas and battle an assortment of enemy ships.  Sounds simple, right?

Well the twist comes in the form of a floating maze that you have to sail through to get to your enemy.  Canon shots can ricochet off the walls, which can be rather hazardous, and charges can be set to blast the walls into tiny little pieces.  There is a bit of strategy involved with game play and overall Toy Pirates is a decent game for our Windows Phones.  However, while entertaining, I couldn't help but think something was missing.

Tank War 3D is a Windows Phone combat game that puts you in the role of tank commander with the mission to obliterate all the enemy tanks.  Tank Wars 3D has potential with over sixty missions to keep things from going stale too quickly, upgradeable tanks, and challenging game play.  But two things hold this game back, annoying ads and really small fonts that can make some of the screen difficult to read.

Another oddity is that the Windows Phone Store title is "Tank War 3D" but the gaming screens use the title "Tank Rivals".  Not exactly sure why the inconsistency is present but we'll go with the game's title that is listed in the Store.  Overall, Tank War 3D is worth a try.  The small print may not be an issue with some but the developer really needs to tame those full page ads.

Surge is a Windows Phone game that is a unique version of the board game RISK but with an arcade game replacing the dice throws with the combat phase of the game. It mixes the strategy of RISK with the action of an arcade game.

Game play is very similar to what you would find with RISK and just as challenging. The game pace is a little slower due to the transition from board game to arcade which may not appeal to everyone. Surge has multi-player support for up to six players that can be a combination of computer or human (pass and play)

Surge is an interesting twist on a classic board game but isn't for those looking for a fast paced game for their Windows Phone.

Submarine Patrol surfaces at the Marketplace

Submarine Patrol is an arcade styled game for your Windows Phone that is based on the Battles of the Falkland Islands.  For those not familiar, in the early 1980's Argentina several islands off the coast of South America that happened to be British Territories.  Needless to say the U.K. took exception to this and sent troops in to remedy the situation.  After seventy four days, Argentina surrendered and un-invaded the islands.  Submarine Patrol focuses on the naval component from this war.

You command a submarine that is patrolling the islands in search of enemy ships to sink.  You see the world through the periscope, aligning your cross hairs and launching torpedoes at destroyers, fast attack ships and other naval ships.

You control your periscope by tilting your Windows Phone left or right and tap the fire button to launch your torpedoes.  Submarine Patrol is a multi-level game and each level is limited on the number of torpedoes available.  You have to lead your targets with each shot and some ships require multiple hits before they will sink.

In just tinkering with the trial version of Submarine Patrol, it comes across as a nice arcade game for your Windows Phone.  The torpedoes could be better animated (just a thin sliver in the water) but overall the animation, controls, sound effects and game play is well done.  The full version of Submarine Patrol is running $1.99 and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
