Over the weekend, we started receiving a truckload of tips regarding the WhatsApp beta being “opened to the public”. For those who don’t know, WhatsApp maintains two branches, one being the public release the other one for beta development. The second branch is closed and “invite only” (yes, we’re a part of it) while the other one is for general release.

We obviously didn’t write anything on the story because frankly, it didn’t seem right. Why would WhatsApp suddenly open a beta that had been private for a very long time? Publicizing it as an "open beta" when it in fact was not, would do nothing but contribute to misinformation. So we held off.

We told you recently of the upcoming changes expected with the cross platform instant messaging application WhatsApp, and the word on the street is that the update is now live. The changes in this version may not be the biggest in the world (unless you're on Windows Phone 7 - orientation lock!) but there are some welcome updates for you to enjoy.

What’s another Friday without an update from WhatsApp? (Seriously, the last four updates were all on a Friday, crazy, eh?) The famous messaging service used to see monthly updates but now it seems to be on the Facebook-fast track, getting an update per week. We’re okay with that and we’re sure you are too as the service has steadily grown into a reliable and fantastic messaging app for Windows Phone.

Earlier this week, WhatsApp turned on their Voice Messaging service on all platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. It was a slick move by the company and was seen as a largely successful move to fight off the likes of Voxer and other competitors.

Good news if you’re a fan of WhatsApp, the popular platform-agnostic messaging service that spans the world. The app, which has been receiving numerous updates in the last few months with the help of Nokia, has remotely enabled a new feature today: voice messages.

When users enter into a chat with a contact, to the left of the text window a microphone icon should now be present (see the photo above). Users can simply press and hold that icon to record a voice clip which is then sent instantly to the contact. The quality of the recording is excellent and it is certainly a welcome feature, especially with services like Voxer breathing down the necks of companies like WhatsApp.

It seemed like just two days ago we were telling you about version 2.10.506 of WhatsApp for Windows Phone with presumably more bug fixes and tweaks. Well, another day and another update as version 2.10.523 is now out, once again with no changelog.

That means they’re still optimized the code to improve reliability and for some of you who are still having problems, you’ll want to grab this update ASAP.

In recent weeks, the team behind the popular messenger WhatsApp have been aggressively pushing out updates for Windows Phone, including a somewhat major overhaul of behind the scenes plumbing.  But if there was one area where people always had complaints about the app, it was with its notification system not working reliably.

We’ll spare you the details of why notifications sometimes fail on Windows Phone, but we can say that things are at least improving. In fact, the Nokia team working with WhatsApp to develop the service has certainly been a positive influence on the app, making it more dependable.

Looks like the folks behind WhatsApp, the super popular messaging app, aren’t resting on their laurels anymore.

Last week we saw the long-anticipated “overhaul” update, which added fast resume, ditched the music streaming API (for Windows Phone 8) and even added a few features. Within hours, a second update rolled out for some, which seemingly fixed a few bugs here and there.

There hasn’t been a single day over the past few months where you folks haven't asked about the status of WhatsApp. We don’t blame you, it’s a popular app that’s been lagging in the development department for Windows Phone. It has also been since early April that we saw the beta of WhatsApp. Well, hit up the Windows Phone Store, search for WhatsApp and hit update. Today is the day.

A little over a month ago we showed you guys I’m Here for Windows Phone. It’s a unique app that takes something your phone can do out-of-the-box and expands on it. Your Windows phone is pretty good at sharing your location to anyone you want, but it does have a few limitations. I’m Here was recently updated with some welcomed additions for the international crowd. Let’s check it out.

There’s nothing quite like waking up to some screenshots of the new beta version of WhatsApp, the popular mulit-platform messaging client. We’ve already detailed some of the changes coming for the future Windows Phone 8 branch, an update that looks to be quite massive. But for those on 7.8, we’re told that version is getting updated as well.

Though the 7.8 branch of WhatsApp evidently won’t ditch the background audio API for connections (more on that below), it does bring some other new features and at least shows that the WhatsApp and Nokia teams aren’t forgetting 7.x users with the planned update.

We’ve been teasing and dancing around the next iteration of WhatsApp for Windows Phone, an update that is looking to be quite considerable for the platform.

One new feature has just been revealed sounds more exciting than it is: call contact. No, this is not WhatsApp going all VOIP on us, but is instead just another means to facilitate an easier transition when communicating with people. In a chat conversation, users will be able to quickly direct dial the recipient by just bringing up their contact info.

Privacy in smartphones is always a big deal amongst consumers, so it’s a little odd to see the super popular WhatsApp messaging client have a platform-specific privacy breach regarding geo-location metadata.

The situation is a little convoluted so stick with us when trying to explain.  Photos that are received (not sent) from WhatsApp are automatically tagged with your current location, regardless of your privacy Settings (Applications > Photos + Camera). That means if you were to then pass that photo on to someone else or upload to SkyDrive, your location info will be preserved.
