Out of all the Windows hybrid machines we have been able to get our hands on, Lenovo’s line of YOGA machines still sit among the best. The company’s current YOGA 2 Pro is an excellent unit, but with its $999 price tag, it can be out of reach for some. In a world where cheap Windows laptops reign supreme and Google Chromebooks at $249 look like a good option for some, we really need a truly great, yet affordable, Windows 8 machine – enter the Lenovo YOGA 2.

Windows Phone Central visits the Windows 8 and Windows Phone development group UI CENTRIC

Located several floors up in an unassuming east London building is a quiet office where some of the most creative and beautiful experiences available on Windows Phone and Windows 8 are being developed. You may have never heard of them, but the guys at UI CENTRIC have produced quality apps that you’ve most likely enjoyed if you’ve been an avid Windows Phone user. We recently had the chance to visit that office and chat with CEO Dan Ulzhoefer, to find out how they work, what they’re most proud of, and their plans for the future.

Dan had some great experience to share which we’re sure would benefit any developers reading this article. UI CENTRIC are currently hiring developers with a passion for Windows Phone or Windows 8, so if that sounds like you, check out the interview below for more details on how to contact them.

At times, the success of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8, can seem questionable. While Microsoft was able to sell over 240 million Windows 7 licenses a year after the software’s launch, Windows 8 is just beginning to see any figures close to that number. It has been fifteen months and Microsoft has just now acknowledged that they have sold over 200 million licenses.

When a new email application shows up in the Windows Store, there are two types of people; there are the guys and gals who jump up and down at the excitement of improved productivity, and there are those who could not care any less than they are currently. The latest email application to hit Windows 8.1, TouchMail, just might be able to attract both groups of people.

Developing an app for the Windows Store calls for skill with not only the code itself, but also with the design of the user interface. We had all experienced downloading a Windows 8 app with high hopes of its success, but instead received disappointment when we see that the developer simply did not invest enough time in the UI. With Windows 8.1 Microsoft had added a new control to the tool bags of developers to help remedy some of the past interface development woes that may have been experienced.

The Windows Store is certainly growing and it seems that if you delve deep enough, there is always a new interesting app or game to tryout. We have played quite a few games on our Windows tablet’s such as Halo: Spartan Assault, that take full advantage of the graphic processing at hand. However, as we all know, complex graphics are not always the most important aspect. Today, we are looking at a simple, yet fun, infinite platformer – Night Lighter.

With the number of Windows 8 Update 1 screenshots flooding the web, it feels like the latest operating system update from Microsoft has already hit. In previously leaked screenshots we were able to see the beginning of a merge between Windows legacy applications and Windows 8 applications. We were shown that the operating system update will bring with it the ability to pin your favorite applications to the taskbar. But now, we are seeing possible screenshots of Windows 8 applications being able to run directly on the desktop itself.

Windows 8 is an operating system that was without a doubt designed with touch screens at its center focus point. Many laptops and all-in-one PCs are finally designating multi-touch displays as standard instead of an add-on, but what about the desktop user still using a tower style PC? There are a variety of touchscreen monitors out on the market and today we are going to take a look at what is being said to being one of the best – Acer’s T272HL.

After a very positive initial launch of our official Windows 8 app, development is still very much in high gear as we look through all your feedback and start to address the teething issues you'd often see with any first big release.

Today v1.0.0.1 is available on the Windows Store, and is the result of work to fix the initial bugs we discovered after going live. So whilst you shouldn't expect to see much in the way of obvious changes we've hopefully addressed a few critical ones that were causing the app to either crash or not function at all for a few users. You can find the app here in the store, and the changelist below.

Technology moves fast, but the United States government isn’t exactly as quick. Microsoft had originally filed a patent for the Windows 8 start screen in September 2011 (there was some initial confusion at the time on what it meant). The first release of Windows 8 was on October 25, 2012, so in essence, the patent was filled over a year before the operating system appeared on the market.

The design patent itself has just been approved with a stamped date of January 28 2014 – over two years after it was submitted for approval.

Windows store apps can take up to 24 hours to show up in search results but you can find our app ready to download right now right here! If you want to go and grab it then come back and read this article please do, but I’ve got a lot to share with you so make sure you come back!

The wait has certainly been an enduring one, but we're almost there folks. The VLC team has updated the Kickstarter blog with an entry detailing some work carried out on the port to WinRT platforms. The team believes they'll be in the position to submit the app once again to the Windows Store this week, so we should see VLC on Windows 8 in due course. What started a few months ago as a Kickstarter project is soon to become reality. Pass the break to see some screenshots.
