If you visit Windows Phone Central on a regular basis, you most likely have a Windows Phone. That means you should be using our top-rated app. Maintaining a 4.5 star rating (out of 5) from 1700 reviews, our app, developed by Jay Bennett, is always one of the top downloaded in the Store.

Today, we are happy to announce in conjunction with myAppFree that the Windows Phone Central app is completely free for the next 36 hours. Technically, our app is already free but if you pay 99 cents you can remove our ads that help support the site. However, if you act now, you can unlock that feature and not have to pay a dollar at all. Once unlocked, it is your forever!

It's patch day again for the official WPCentral app. After a slightly rushed fix we released last week to address problems some regions were experiencing when using Microsoft's pubcenter advertising controls, a new issue was introduced that affected users with the Iconic tile enabled when launching from toast notifications.

We're happy to say that said issue is fixed with today's release of version 4.4.20 for Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8. You'll find the full change list after the break as always, but if you'd rather just go grab the update then see the Windows Phone Store here.

Last week, we finally took the veil off of the official Windows 8.1 app for Windows Phone Central. Since then, it received a quick patch to address a network issue. It’s also maintained a healthy 4.6 rating (out of 5) with many positive reviews from all of you.

But you deserve better, and we’re prepared to deliver. Our lead developer, Jay Bennett, is expecting version 1.1.0.4 to land in the Windows Store this week, maybe even as early as tomorrow. I’m looking at the changelog and see no less than 17 new or improved features.

Happy Boxing day everyone! As we come to the end of 2013 we have a little tune up to announce for our Windows Phone app. This is a minor bump for version 4.4 up to revision 12 and you can go download it right now from the marketplace for WP7 and WP8.

Of course if you want to find out exactly what has changed you can stick around and we’ll tell you all about it below. Also don’t forget to go and check out the first sneak preview of our Windows 8 app if you haven’t already, we hope to be releasing that into public beta very soon!

You’ve asked for it, and we’ve finally got around to doing it. Yes, the Windows 8.1 app for Windows Phone Central is nearing completion. Or at least complete enough show you the app in action as we prep for beta testing!

Although that beta isn’t starting today (we tried, we really tried!), it will be happening in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a look at our video tour, hosted by your cherub cheeked developer, Jay Bennett, plus a few screenshots and photos of the app in action.

There’s an app all of you should have on your Windows Phone right now. It’s ours and it’s made by Jay Bennett. As you may have noticed, our app hit version 4.4 nearly a month ago. It wasn’t a big update in terms of features. Instead, it was a refinement of what was already a killer app. How did Jay refine it? With a bit of help from feedback from both users and a recent design review with Nokia and Microsoft. Let’s check out the video from that design review.

It's been fairly quiet in terms of updates to our own official app for Windows Phone in the last couple of months, other things tend to get in the way especially when the big focus is something for bigger screens. That said we have some good news today in that version 4.4 of our app has just gone live and is available for you to download to your Windows Phone 7 or 8 device right now from the marketplace.

You'll likely only notice a few of the changes straight away so as usual you can read all about them after the break, as well as an important announcement about our Windows Phone 7 support from here on in.

Last night, we reported that our app was having a few troubles on the AT&T network (and a few of you on Verizon said the same). It was a networking issue, not the app directly and while we won’t bother you with the details, it should be working for most users now.

We just checked on our phones and have finally had a successful connection, but we need to make sure all is good for the rest of you. So if you use our app and are on AT&T, Verizon, etc. please take the poll below and let us know your results!

You may have noticed a new update for your official Windows Phone Central app appeared earlier this week, followed by another one this morning. In the interest of keeping our readership informed we thought it best to let you know what these minor patches are for, but if you'd rather just get on with being up to date you can grab the update here in the marketplace.

The brief changelist and a little information on what's changed can be found after the break for those of you who enjoy technical details!

Apparently Microsoft aren't the only ones with a new rapid release cycle! Somehow today I get to announce a third update to the official Windows Phone Central app in the same number of weeks. Before anyone gets too excited though, this one is just a quick tune up to the v4.3 feature set, fixing two important bugs and finally bringing forum likes to Windows Phone 7 users.

Yes, we figured out why the Tapatalk API wasn't allowing the WP7 build to send like requests in our forums and that has now been resolved. Still, this isn't the most exciting update, but you can find the change list after the break or download from the marketplace right here (it should be showing up as version 4.3.15).

Last week we pushed out an update to our app with a few new features, bug fixes and speed improvements, whilst also promising that a second part of that update would be coming this week. Well, that time is now and you can pick up the second release of v4.3 for both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 from the marketplace right now.

This release contains an important fix for Windows Phone 8 users where using the lock screen wallpaper functionality was causing the app to use up more of your storage than it needed to. That problem is solved now and we've even included a new button in the settings that will clear out all files held by the app in temporary storage for those of you who like control over your gigabytes. See below for what else has changed.

It's time for another update to our official Windows Phone app, and this one brings functionality many of you have requested: lock screen wallpapers. If you're a die-hard fan of the site and just can't get enough Windows Phone news, or even want to bring the news front and center for a week or so, you can enable our app as your wallpaper provider to get the latest headlines on your lock screen. Our wallpaper colours can also be customised with the full range of Windows Phone accents, and you'll even get article images appearing when you're using our flip tile. Find and enable all of these options from the app's settings screen.

That's not the only new feature thought, we've also finally included support for playing videos through Metrotube, switched to the Nokia advertising exchange (for free users only of course) and updated Unification support with in-line images. See below for the full changelist as well as a few samples of what you can do when customising our lock screen.

You may have noticed an update available for our app this morning, and perhaps you're curious as to what has changed? It's not the most exciting patch but we are aware of issues that users of 512MB devices have been experiencing with the app and are working hard to try and fix these problems. Patch 4.1.3 is intended to fix said problems by reducing the memory footprint of the app with slightly lower quality image when running on the lower spec devices such as the Lumia 520, 620 or 720.

If you have been experiencing any kind of crashes with the app please update to this version. However if that still doesn't work for you it would be incredibly helpful if you got in touch via app@wpcentral.com. As much as the 1 star reviews in the store make it clear you have a problem it makes it impossible for us to diagnose and fix that problem! Now that we've cleared that up, there were a couple of other things in the patch that were ready at the time, see below for the full changelist.

Over the weekend we gave you a sneak peak at version 4 of our official app for Windows Phone, and we're pleased to say it has now passed certification and is available on the marketplace right here.

So as always please download at your own leisure and enjoy the new features (which we've listed again below). Please note though that voice commands is a paid only feature and is currently only available in US and UK english, something which we're working to improve!

It's been a little while now since we last updated our official app for Windows Phone, but fear not as version 4.0 was submitted to the store earlier this week and is right now undergoing certification. Of course we know that just waiting is never as fun as seeing the changes for yourself so we've put together a quick video to demonstrate the headline features this time around.

So, keep reading past that break to see voice commands, new live tile options and Unification support in all their glory. We expect the app to be published next week and will of course post an article as soon as that happens reminding you to grab the update.

Happy Easter weekend everyone, fancy winning a free Lumia 920? Of course you do! Which is why you should be following Microsoft's Next App Star competition, where every vote gives you a chance to win one of Nokia's flagship devices. What you may not have realised is that you can vote once every round, so with round 4 voting starting up today you can head over to Facebook and vote for your favourite app in the quarter finals.

With round 4 the prizes for developers get big. The apps that win this round will all be featured on Microsoft's channel 9 show, and the 2 that win the next round will have their developers sent to Microsoft's developer conference with hotel and flights paid for (huge prize!). Round 4 is the quarter finals of this competition for which the end is very much in site, and you can find a full listing of the apps which have made it this far after the break.

The Windows Phone next app star competition is in full swing, today kick started round 3 of voting and we're thrilled to say that the official WPCentral app is still in the running!

Microsoft are offering the chance to win a free Lumia 920 everytime you vote and you can vote once each round so if you've not won yet then try voting again today! Each round an app wins nets new prizes for the developers as well, with the ultimate prize being a prime time TV commercial featuring the winning app.

As part of this promotion there is also a new marketplace collection showing all 64 finalists of the 9000+ original entrants. We've borrowed Microsoft's listing which you can see below, or even swipe right in our app and tap the "download app" button to see the full list. Please note that this is the most apps we've ever listed in one post so you might want to give the app a few seconds before tapping so it can retrieve all the names from Microsoft!

After launching the Windows Phone Next app star competition yesterday to some shaky technical hitches, the voting app on Facebook is now back and available for you to vote right now. Don't forget that voting gives you the chance to win a free Nokia Lumia 920, so it's definitely worth your time.

It's important to inform you that votes registered on the 19th of March will not count towards the winner, in the interest of fairness the vote count was reset by the competition's organisers. We are very lucky to have been chosen as one of the 64 finalists and are up against a game we hold in very high regard - ARMED, a tough match up in the first bracket!
