advertisement

One of our faithful readers has spotted a couple of ads for the Jil Sander edition LG E906 in Germany's Die ZeitDie Zeit is a highly-respected weekly newspaper in Germany, which also includes a lifestyle magazine called ZEITmagazin.  Typically, purveyors of chic, like Armani and Prada, grace the pages of ZEITmagazin, but this time its the Jil Sander E906 that is being flaunted in a full-page ad.  The ad looks like a still from the video that appeared on the Jil Sander website back in October, and informs readers that they can pick one up at Media Markt (described to us as Germany's version of Best Buy).

The Jil Sander E906 is essentially a modified LG Optimus 7, sporting a 3.8-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel camera capable of shooting 720p. It comes bundled with a Jil Sander app, which allows users to browse clothing collections and more.  The specs are nothing outstanding, but the handset itself, complete with hardware buttons, is as suave as the ads.

Nokia is continuing with the full court press to get the word out about Windows Phone. We've seen ads in the paper, video ads, demo apps to give Symbian owners a chance to try Windows Phone and now humungous display in a local shopping mall.

One of our Secret Agents ran across the display while visiting the Bluewater Shopping Center in Kent (over in the U.K.). Hard to miss the advertisement with all it's bright colors, huge flat screen display and convenient directional arrows to the various wireless carriers in the mall.  We have also been informed that there were Nokia ads displayed on the information kiosks located throughout the Shopping Center.

Curious, for those new to Windows Phone, is the latest ad campaign for the new Windows Phones strong enough to lure you over to the Windows Phone side?

Thanks goes out to Agent62 for taking great risks to capture these photos!

Windows Phone advertisements are popping up all over the place lately. Check out the above ad for the HTC Radar which one of our readers spotted while using Skype.

Seeing as how Skype calling and videoconferencing is coming to Windows Phone later this year and how Microsoft, you know, owns the company, it’s a great example of advertising synergy. If this sort of thing keeps up, Windows Phone may soon achieve brand awareness among the common man - or at least collage artists.

Thanks Zanch for the tip!

We've just been made aware of the above advertisement in Brazil, which effectively promotes the HTC Ultimate (Titan). Fabio Castro walks us through how the beast handset lights up his life. "The big screen turns on and my imagination wakes up", more like the big screen wakes up and you feel like you're carrying a futuristic screen around and not a phone. It's a great advert nonetheless and further proves HTC's dedication to promote Windows Phone.

Thanks Lucas for the tip!

It was less than two weeks ago that we told you that Sprint made the HTC Arrive the posterboy for their trade-in program for people to upgrade to the iPhone.  Then, two days after the story (not that we're taking credit) they changed their mind, thinking that the Arrive may be a handset worthy of holding onto (the same cannot be said for the LG Lotus Elite).

Now, in the latest edition of Sprint Connection, they are actually promoting it.  The caption praises the Arrive, now with WP 7.5, as a great tool for business owners, touting it's ability to stay connected to people and easily take notes using the text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities.

Like we said, we're not saying we had anything to do with this, but it sure is refreshing to see Sprint give props to its only WP7 phone, and one of the better first generation WP7 phones across the board.

HTC advertising in Norway

While HTC and Phones4U make a difference in the UK, we have Telenor, Norway's largest carrier, advertising the HTC Radar in a Norwegian newspaper. The photo above, sent in by a reader, shows the HTC Radar available on contract. Looking at the Telenor website, we can see the Radar is also available unlocked for 3,099kr (£349).

This is a pretty cool advert for Windows Phone "Mango", and is most effective for being a short film with an amateur finish. It was created for an assignment by Izzy Gramp and was planned, filmed and edited within 24 hours. It demos a quick run-through of some of the features in Mango including Local Scout and Bing Vision.

The AdDuplex team has posted an interesting article on their blog that goes into how some clicks aren’t registered in the system to maximise the user experience. Alan Mendelevich, a developer, explains:

As you probably know, there’s no multitasking in current version of Windows Phone. So as soon as you open a marketplace app via MarketplaceDetailTask the control is transferred to the MP app and the call to register the click on your server gets killed. There are 2 general ways to overcome this:

  1. Route all the taps through your web server.
  2. Delay opening the marketplace app until the click is registered with you server.

We’ve dismissed both of these approaches because of the effect they have on user experience and based on the understanding of what is the end goal for our clients.

The overall just of the click being counted is when a user taps on an advert, this click event is saved in Isolated Storage and the user is transferred to the Marketplace. Should that user return to the app where he/she performed the tap on the advert, the user is checked against a saved click. If one’s present it’s reported to the server.

Alan ran a short experiment to check how much CTR is actually lost due to the above user experience adjustments. Estimating from two identical adverts (one going to the Marketplace and the other via the web) Alan reached a conclusion that approximately 20% of the Marketplace links are not registered.

What do you think about this as a developer who uses the service? Should you have any suggestions or feedback, check the article via the link below to voice your opinion - every little shout helps.

Brandon Foy made a fan video for Windows Phone 7 that became quite popular throughout the community--anyone remember this? The WP7 team at Microsoft was continuously pointed to the video and they decided to show it as an introduction at MIX'11: the Wednesday WP7 focused keynote.

Not only that, but Joe Belfiore, who oversees Windows Phone Program Management stated that Microsoft plan to use the video as a television advertisement should the video pass 200,000 views. You can check out the video here for comments and to rate it, spread the word and help us get Brandon's work on the big screen.

There have been recent reports that developers are noticing a gradual decrease in revenue from CPM (cost per [thousand] impression) advertising within their apps, is this a notable trend due to fluctuations in the algorithm on Microsoft’s side or the amount of active users of that app?

The chart above displays Elbert Perez’s, developer of Impossible Shoota among other WP7 titles, eCPM earnings. The most likely explanation would be that his app(s) were used less than previously - note that uses does not count downloads. Someone could download an app and never run it, thus the adverts not being displayed and contributing to the eCPM. Another explanation could be Microsoft’s advertising algorithm used for each individual app fluctuates with a number of factors, which is more than expected. Microsoft replied to the cries about lower CPM earnings with:

Variation in ad CPM is expected behaviour as the algorithm used in the Microsoft Advertising Exchange for Windows Phone 7 actively learns the performance of each ad-enabled application(s). In some cases, these are sweeping changes. The Mobile Ad Exchange takes into account many variables when determining how an ad impression is valued in real time. This can include, but is not limited to; ad unit categories, location of the device/user and active advertising campaigns.

The chart above shows Elbert Pereze's impression count for the advertisements in regards to the first graph in this article. Comparing them both there is a notable trend with number of impressions almost equalling to the revenue earned. There is a slight dip in revenue while impressions remained at a high level, but this could have been due to the advertisers at the time bidding lower, etc. So what’s the whole shebang about?

WP7 Surprise TV Advertisement

This is a pretty neat advertisement on the WindowsPhoneUK channel, hoping to see it aired on ITV every three seconds (notably the worst TV channel on the planet for the sheer volume adverts inbetween programmes). Throw in a British accent that sounds similar to some video game podcasters and you got yourself a winner.

We also seem to be travelling down the route in having WP7 adverts for each network like the iPhone - same advert, but the ending is edited to included o2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three, Vodafone etc. Have you seen this aired on the big screen?

New Samsung Focus ad surfaces

The latest ad for the Samsung Focus from AT&T is a cleaner, more straight forward ad (no orange fuzzy creatures) that highlights the functionality of the Windows Phone.

The new ad focuses on the thousands of Marketplace applications for Windows Phone 7 as well as key features such as Microsoft Office and Xbox Live integration. The ad gives apps such as Netflix, Open Table, Fandango, Yelp, Amazon Kindle Reader and others a brief cameo.

While Windows Phones 7 has taken it on the chin this week with the update headaches, the ad does remind us that these phones aren't too shabby as is.

icrosoft are bringing out the guns with their advertising campaign. Gone are the days of the simple "quick and easy so you can get back on with life" and here comes the bragging about the speed of Windows Phone 7 when compared against "Your phone" (targeted at any none WP7 owner).
WinRumors have in possession a collection of the adverts in a draft variety, displaying superiority against other OSs in a  range of scenario including viewing your Xbox Live profile, informing your colleagues that you'll be late and getting directions home. What make these beauties special is that once task has been completed, the device handler begins carrying out humorous activities.

Be sure to keep a sharp eye open for these commercials to air. What do you  think with first impressions from the drafts above?

This isn't the first time we've seen HTC featured in a television commercial, nor is it nearly as cool as the Prince of Darkness pimping Windows Mobile, but what we have here is flowers and futbol and a bunch of the Touch Diamond 2.
