in-app purchases

Remember the location-based social interaction game Torchbear? The creators of Torchbear, Lighthouse Games Studio, are back within another location-based game – this time exclusively for Windows Phone 8. Their new title Greed City combines the property and wealth acquisition elements of Monopoly with the real-world location and GPS elements of Four Square. It’s much more game-like than Torchbear and costs nothing to download, so Windows Phone 8 users should definitely give it a look.

We've got a quick-start guide and more impressons to share, so read on!

The paid version of MonsterUp, the popular platormer, has been updated. Apple is continuing the patent war with a new updated entry of the "In-App Purchasing" application they filed back in April of 2010. This update appears to cover most functionality of present app stores that allow the user to purchase additional content within an app. What's more is the patent also covers variations on the process, including the use of HTML 5 web apps.

Let's not forget that the previous Apple trademark injunction against Amazon for "App Store" was declined due to being too broad of a term. Is in-app purchasing really something that Apple patent? What do you guys think?

No in-app purchasing for Mango?

We recently covered Beards and Beaks entering the Marketplace and featuring DLC/IAP (downloadable content/in-app purchasing), so signs were strong that this could be possible for developers when the update hits. Unfortunately, as one can see in the above snippet, we see Todd Brix explaining on the AppHub post that this wont be the case and IAP will be absent in Mango for developers.

Beards and Beaks is developed and published by Microsoft, so this could well be a test run for a future implementation of the feature. Developers have long asked for the implementation of IAP for their own projects. What do you guys make of this?

Here's quite the surprise: Beards & Beaks ($2.99) features downloadable content (DLC) i.e. extra levels and add ons that can be purchased from within the game itself.

Up to now, our games have been fairly limited, requiring a whole new download to bring new levels, like IloMilo. Now, developers evidently can start offering extra levels, new mini-games, etc. as an extension of the main game (as well as charge for it, hello!).

Luckily the "Forest Map" add on here for Beards & Beaks is completely free. What's more, it's mean this game can get extended life out of it since MSG can keep creating new levels and features.

Ah, the future of Windows Phone gaming is looking good. Grab the game here in the Marketplace.
