applications

If you're one of the lucky ones to be getting a Nokia Lumia 800 or 710, you'll also be one of the first to get the new Nokia Maps application, as well as Nokia Drive, for Windows Phone 7.5. The new Nokia Maps app, which you can get from the Lumia Marketplace now (and all of Mango devices in the future), brings features to your phone that will make you "feel like a local everywhere."

By combining offline maps, turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, sharing your locations via the web, and a unique way to highlight local points of interest; Nokia Maps Beta and Nokia Drive look to become a great alternative to the stock Bing Maps app. Now if only they would make it available to the rest of us Mango device owners... sadly, that won't be happening for a little while.

"Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps give you comprehensive mobile navigation and the insider knowledge to make it happen. With support across 95 countries, you'll get accurate turn-by-turn directions to the destination of your choice, as well as information on all the cool places to visit when you get there."

If you haven't already gotten the update to install over the Nokia Maps placeholder on your Lumia, head to the marketplace to get it for free, or just watch the video above to see what will hopefully be arriving soon for everyone else.

Hang on to your pants WP fans, because an HTML 5 version of Bing Mobile is right around the corner, and it's bringing some neat new functionality along with it. While the Bing team is currently only making the update available to iOS and Android devices (WP7 is, strangely, waiting for a future update), the latest news coming from the Bing blog does show one more thing that we can look forward to in the future for Windows phones.

HTML 5 is not just a new bit of code to provide the same search engine to mobile devices. By going with the latest standards in mobile development, the Bing design team is working to create one universal Bing experience across all devices. This new version will allow Microsoft to make future updates automatically without asking the user to download new versions of the app, and will significantly enhance their experience as well. Rather than downloading separate Bing-powered applications developed with proprietary code for individual platforms, each device will provide users with a Bing that can hook into functions and features on the device just like a native application would (such as voice input or camera support).

Yes, it is true that the new app will only be released on Android and iOS devices first and not WP7 devices until later (doesn't make too much sense to us either), but it's good to see Microsoft deliver a unified experience for their products to all applicable devices, and not just their own. What's more is that this new app, coupled with HTML 5, won't be like a native application or a mobile website - it will be a hybrid of the two. And we all know that hybrids are better at everything.

Hit the break to watch a video explanation on what the Bing design team plans to do with their mobile service in the future.

Microsoft Gulf, a division of the company that is based in the Middle East, is increasing its efforts to make WP7 more accessible and usable to their customers who live in the region. By partnering with digital marketing firm Prototype, Microsoft plans to bring a number of new applications to the Windows Phone Marketplace, all of which are built for purposes and businesses that are unique to the UAE (United Arab Emirates).

The list of new apps includes titles like Time Out Dubai, to give users access to restaurant reviews and locations; Aramex, for tracking courier shipments; and mParc, an exclusive Windows Phone Mango app that will give users instant access to Dubai's paid parking lots.

As more of these localized apps are built, Microsoft is making it clear that they intend to spend their massive marketing budget wisely to increase their WP7 user-base. Expect to see more such programs launched worldwide as not only Microsoft, but soon Nokia, continue to integrate WP7 into the world of smartphone users.

Windows Phone CV apps?

In the world of job hunting, producing an effective curriculum vitae (CV) aka resume for you yanks, is your best chance to differentiate yourself from other applicants. Uploading the finished document to job sites, attaching it to cover letters and more are just a number of ways to branch out and increase reach for yourself. We've now come across a different approach to publishing your CV to the mass. MonWindowsPhone has found a French CV for Thibaut Legendre in the Marketplace, which is reportedly the second app of its kind internationally.

While it may be different, original, available to thousands as a download and stand out, is the Marketplace really the place for CVs to be published? I'm not sure, probably not. It's the same principle as spam and useless apps. Even though this kind of app is genuine, there's little to no functionality and purpose for the average user. Should a trend kick off where we end up with thousands of CVs on the Marketplace, would we all be smiling?

I pass the question onto you, would you like to see a number of CV apps on the Marketplace? I'm thinking of charging £1.99 to download mine, should I develop one.

Cocktail Flow updated to Mango v3.4

Cocktail Flow is an app that allows users to find and try new cocktails with combinations of alcoholic beverages. You can input into the app what ingredients you have in your bar and cocktails are then identified that can be created for any event or occasion. We covered the app just before MIX'11 when a pack of cocktails named after Microsoft products was released.

We're now back reporting on version 3.4, which has just been pushed out. This update brings Mango goodness including pinnable tiles for individual recipes, live tile, push notifications and performance improvements. Cocktails can also now be rated and users can upload photos to the database. The app is continuously updated with new recipes being added and is often cited as the pinnacle of Windows Phone app design.

You can download Cotail Flow from the Marketplace for $2.99. Thanks Argenys for the tip!

Beta test the new adCenter app

Microsoft is developing an application for adCenter to be used while on the go. In an article on the adCenter blog published by Amit Goel, Senior Product Manager, he has asked for help in testing the beta and ironing out features, bugs and whatnot. The app will provide basic functionality to control the connected account while mobile. Requirements for applying are pretty obvious:

  • Have access to a Windows Phone 7
  • Agree to provide feedback in 4-5weeks in the form of a survey
  • Have an active adCenter account

Note that this is limited to 50 testers - first come, first served. Also, it's US only (yay). To sign up, check out the application form.

In an email sent out to registered developers, Microsoft introduced overlay badges that can be added to screenshots of their apps to show that they are Mango-ready.  The "New for 7.5" icons will indicate that an application is optimized for Mango, and will be the only graphics of their kind that will make it through certification.  The email urged developers to getting cracking on updating for WP 7.5 and utilizing its exclusive functionality, such as multiple live tiles and fast application switching.

Microsoft pointed out that Mango devices are already available in Japan and Russia, with more on the way (very soon!).  And despite an earlier edict that updates would not be allowed to 7.0 versions of apps once their 7.5 counterparts were released, it was announced that that would no longer be the case.  By popular demand, Microsoft will enable App Hub functionality which will allow devs to update both 7.0 and 7.5 versions of their products come the end of October.

You can click the thumbnail below for the full content of the email, which further descibes the update process.

You can download the overlays here.

As far as RSS readers go, Pulse set the standard a few years ago by releasing their award-winning app for the iPad. Since then, the app has gone to the iPhone and Android as well, bringing it's unique and stunning UI along the way.

Today, Pulse has announced that they have developed a version of their news aggregating application for Windows Phone.  The Pulse app lets readers track their favorite news sites by displaying them in a mosaic that updates as content changes.  The WP7 will take this even further, utilizing live tiles, to bring new content to your home screen.  Users can list up to 20 sites from Pulse's 200+ content partners, as well as other sites of their choosing. Of note, this is just the first step in bringing Pulse to Windows Phone, so users should expect more features and a richer client with future updates.

Pulse also allows makes for easy sharing, via Twitter, Facebook and email buttons.  Content can also be texted to users' contacts.

Pulse has been submitted for certification to the Marketplace and it is expected to be available any day now.  We do know that Pulse will be a free app and once a Marketplace link becomes available, we'll update the post.  In the meantime, check out a video demonstration after the break.

Update: Pulse is now available. Grab it here in the Marketplace. (Thanks, Mike P., for the heads up!)

Submit your Mango app updates now and your 7.0 updates later

With WP 7.5 Mango devices already rolling out around the world, like in Japan, Russia and France, it was only a matter of time before developers would be able to submit an update to their apps to work with the latest version of Windows Phone. As announced by Todd Brix on the official Windows Phone Developer Blog, you may now submit your applications to the Windows Phone Mango marketplace. For developers that are submitting updates to their existing apps that run on WP 7.0 the normal caveats apply; existing users with 7.0 devices will not receive the new functionality that comes with Mango-compatible version of your app, but they will be able to continue using the app as it is.

Unfortunately, as we've already known, this is going to be an annoyance for many of our hard-working developers who will want to update their existing apps to WP 7.5, and still update their apps for WP 7.0 users as well. Thankfully, by the end of October, that problem should be all but vanquished. The app submission process will be getting a nice change to provide developers with a dual-update path on their existing apps, meaning that they'll not be limited to adding features only for Mango device owners, but will now have a way to keep supporting their existing 7.0 users.

To help distinguish app feature-sets from 7.0 and 7.5 versions within the marketplace, a small text overlay has been created to be added to screenshots for all apps with a 7.5 upgrade path (shown above). Hopefully, this will help clear some of the confusion that users will have as they browse through app screenshots to see features that they can't access on their 7.0-based devices.

While it's nice that they'll be making this dual-update process available for developers, it's a shame that it will be so long before it arrives in October.  We can't expect them to make everything so easy on us, can we?

Viper SmartStart beta demonstrated at BUILD

In a press release today, Directed Electronics announced that it has been working with Microsoft to bring its Viper SmartStart automotive app, which allows users to lock/unlock, and of course, start their vehicle via smartphone, to the Windows Phone platform "later in the year."  In conjunction with the announcement, Microsoft representatives demonstrated a beta version for those in attendance at the BUILD conference in Anaheim, CA.

"We're very excited about partnering with Microsoft to extend Viper SmartStart products to the Windows Phone 7 platform," said Mike Simmons, Executive VP of Directed Electronics. "Our developers were able to quickly bring the app to Windows Phone 7 because they are so familiar with the Microsoft environment."

SmartStart, created by the same Viper brand of car alarms and other accessories, has a wide range of other smartphone-based apps for the car and home, though it's not clear from the press release if all of them are equally as close to arriving for WP7.  You can see a demo of the various functions on their website.

Aside from the clear convenience of what this app brings to users, what is even more interesting is what else Simmons had to say: "We look forward to collaborating with Microsoft in other areas, including jointly developing advanced solutions for the cloud connected car."  We have seen how Microsoft has been expanding and integrating SkyDrive into Mango, so could this mean such things as cloud-based music playback for the car?  This could take the Windows brand beyond just the PC\Phone\Gaming unification that we already know is coming.

Just building an app is not enough [Developers]

Breaking into a strange, yet interesting story. We have Connectivity Shortcuts by Oliver Ulm for Windows Phone Mango. It's a free Mango-only app that grants the user easy access to Wifi toggle, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode and Cell radio. Unfortunately this functionality wasn't absent from the Mango Marketplace as Network Dashboard, by George Roberts (sirtwist), was released a day prior to Connectivity Shortcuts. Feedback from users and sites alike had Network Dashboard as a more aesthetically pleasing offering.

Network Dashboard was featured in a recent WPDev podcast (about 18 minutes in) and it was said that Connectivity Shortcuts was a direct rip-off. Oliver has spoken to us about how the situation developed and he mentioned that although both apps share similar looks and functionality, they were both developed without knowledge of one another. He went on to say that he had a discussion with George about the coincidental release of both apps and agreed that it was mere pot luck.

What's interesting about this story is how a polished app that was both developed and released first received less attention than a labelled copy that was published a day later and lacked the same good looks. As a conclusion to this story, Oliver has some invaluable advice for other developers:

"Your Apps won't get downloaded and reported on if you simply put them in the Marketplace and wait to see what is going to happen. You have to work outside the Marketplace if you want users to know about them. Every day over a hundred Apps are released so it is easy for your App to remain unknown even though it might be really great.

The last thing to note is that as we have a global marketplace you have to be quick to implement your ideas. Considering the small size of most Smartphone Apps development times are short and there is always the chance that someone else might have the same idea and beat you to the finish line."

Some solid support there. Both Connectivity Shortcuts and Network Dashboard are still both under development and will be updated in the near future. While Oliver works on minor issues and plans to tackle the UI, Network Dashboard v1.1 has been submitted that brings flippy live tiles that show Wifi and Mobile Data statuses with a new icon to illustrate current setting value.

Thanks Oliver for getting in touch!

AdDuplex: a look at app capabilities

A while ago Alan Mendelevich, Founder of AdDuplex, published an interesting article about apps in the Marketplace. Much like a previous Marketplace analysis by Justin Angel we take a look at a sample of available apps, but instead of looking at a Marketplace specific breakdown, Alan walks us through app capabilities.

In the image above (click the enlarge) you can see we have nine app capabilities illustrated by percentage of the 50 top apps taken in the Marketplace (July '11). To give a quick run-through, we have owner identity, location-based services, media library, web browser, phone identity, data connection, microphone, sensors and push notifications. As is to be expected, data connectivity is the most used capability within apps, but it's interesting to see owner identity and phone identity on 24% and 26% respectively.

Sky News for Windows Phone now available

BSkyB has released an app in the Marketplace that provides a new platform for news to be delivered to Windows Phone users. What makes this app so special is that you can stream the channel for free over WiFi and 3G within the app. There are a number of categories available including: UK news, world news, sport, business, politics and "Strange!".

Viewing videos within articles is also featured, which is a nice touch not having to go into the browser to hunt down videos on-topic. The app is well crafted and is quick and nimble. The live TV streaming is superb over both 3G and WiFi (ensure you check your allowance before heading out of WiFi coverage). But wait, there's more. Not only can you share articles via social media but you can send reports directly from the app to the newsroom. Pretty neat.

We've had word that our US buddies can't get their paws on this app, let us know in the comments should you not be able to download it. Head on over to the Marketplace to download Sky News for free (UK only). Thanks, Andy J., for the tip!

This is an interesting calculation, Research2Guidance has published a report that features a chart which illustrates the comparison of average downloads per app on a number of platforms to iOS. Looking at that chart above, you can see that OVI Store (Symbian) has +160% more downloads per app on average than iOS, while Windows Phone comes second in at +80%.

Surprisingly, BlackBerry came in third at +43%. Many users on competitor platforms may complain and make remarks about the amount of apps available to WP users, but we sure have quality over quantity and it goes to show with the amount of downloads apps are accumulating. Check out our article covering Marketplace statistics and case study for more insight on WP.

Windows Phone Marketplace statistics

Justin Angel, former Microsoft Silverlight Program Manager, has downloaded all Windows Phone Marketplace XAPs and analysed them. He's then gone on to provide some insightful graphs for us all to see. He ended up with 108GB and analysed 24,505 apps, looking at Obfuscation, Silverlight vs. XNA, programming language, number of cloned apps and more.

We'll get stuck into cloned apps to begin with, which Justin reports as being around 925 of the 24,505 he took into account. These are the apps that share the same functionality as each other, such as the spam that we encountered, etc. He estimated that over 20% of the Marketplace is the same app published more than once. This leaves just 18,549 apps in the Marketplace that are unique. Check out the chart after the break for a visual representation.

Why are indie developers heading for WP7?

An insightful article has been published over at PCWorld that covers possible reasons as to why indie developers are bothering with Windows Phone at all. Even though Microsoft's platform may appear to be small fish when compared against iOS and Android, it's certainly catching the attention of a wider audience and increasing brand awareness dramatically.

The article goes into detail about the Microsoft Evangelists that get in touch with developers and students to lure them to the platform, as well as a few established developers who have built popular and well received apps. This includes Pieter Voloshyn, of Thumba (our review), and Calum McLellan, of Feed Me (our review). It's worth the read so we wont spoil it too much, head on through the link below.

App.net to include Windows Phone [Developers]

App.net is a service offered to developers on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android that helps monetise and distribute applications cross-platform style. Developers are able to use analytics to track users, create catchy and professionally appealing landing pages and promote their app with greater efficiency.

We've now caught wind that the team behind App.net, Mixed Media Labs, has plans to include Windows Phone, BlackBerry and HTML5 (web apps) to increase the reach and scalability of the service. In an interview with VultureBeat Dalton Caldwell, CEO of Mixed Media Labs, had the following to say:

"A lot of the larger shops have apps on multiple platforms, and there are small developers that are experimenting with WP7. Now that we have the core platform built, adding new platforms is straightforward for us to do. The larger vision of these new features is that we are getting to the point where we want a developer to be able to link to app.net/myapp [the URL of an application on App.net] and App.net will show the best version of their app for the device the user is on. The less end-users have to deal with the platform complexity and compatibility issues, and figuring out whether to use mobile website vs. app, the better."

Head on over to App.net to check out featured apps and/or submit your own. Pricing starts at no cost at all, but the standard subscription for three apps across multiple platforms is $12/mo. Unfortunately, webOS will not be added along with the three mentioned platforms.

See the image after the break for an example of a OneNote WP7 landing page.
