apps

We've seen the headlines, we've heard the pundits (looking at you, Scoble) that tout apps as the "big" thing on smartphones. And while initially this may hold true for new users, the novelty wears off, or so suggests a new study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project.

In that study, 68% of users only use five or fewer apps at least once a week. Furthermore, 17% don't use any apps on a regular basis while only 42% of respondents even have apps on their phones. Those are certainly interesting numbers and what it suggests is people are downloading lots of apps but rarely use them on a regular basis. In fact, we hear this often from developers who don't get many ad-hits in their apps after a few weeks despite seemingly large numbers of downloads. Speaking of, the study also points out that judging an app's popularity by number of downloads alone is probably not a good metric (though app reviews and number of them may be).

In other interesting stats from Nielsen, Android users spend about 90 minutes a day on their phones, two-thirds of that time in apps (probably customizing their UI, just kidding). That suggest that even though few use many apps, the ones they do use, they use often and on a regular basis.

While no numbers are revealed for Windows Phone users, it will be even more interesting for our users since things like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are baked into the OS, reducing the number of popular services that people need to download separate apps for. That will only increase if Microsoft continues, as expected, to bake in other services as the OS grows and updates roll out. This of course makes us ask the question: Do you fit this model or are you folks app-fiends? (We're also pretty sure games don't count as apps for the purposes of this study).

My Starbucks Card is a new app over at the Windows Phone Marketplace that lets you use your Starbucks card right from your Windows Phone. No need to fumble around for the card, just run My Starbucks Card and your card can be scanned straight from your Windows Phone.

When you first launch My Starbucks Card you will be prompted to enter your card number and Starbucks.com credentials. A virtual card will be generated on My Starbucks Card's main screen and the app will even pull up your current balance.

While My Starbucks Card isn't an "official" Starbucks app, it does looks like it would come in handy if you are a Starbuck's frequent flyer. The app will run you $.99 and you can grab it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

The app contains 24 different ringtones that you can preview and save to your phone.

WP7applist updated for Mango, still quite handy

Our awesomely named fried Luigi Violin recently published a couple of updates for his WP7applist app. The first, version 1.3, added Mango support but had a few kinks which version 1.4 irons out.

WP7applist version 1.3 release notes:

  • Added Fast App Switching support
  • Graphical makeover
  • Improved UX
  • Infinite scrolling lists
  • Performance improvements

WP7applist version 1.4 release notes:

  • Revised graphics
  • Dark theme added
  • Various graphical improvements
  • Better ad placement
  • Fixed UI lagging introduced in v1.3

The new theme really does look much slicker and more in tune with the general Metro theme – just check out this comparison shot versus the original:

As for the ads, they appear at the top of the screen when browsing the app’s various subsections (Games, Price Drops, etc.) but not on the main menu. This keeps the main area attractive and clutter free – a nice compromise between the user experience and needs of the developer.

WP7applist is an incredibly useful tool for discovering new apps and games. You can quickly view price drops, apps gone free, the most popular apps in a variety of categories, and lots more. Each app page lists screenshots and user reviews - just like the real Marketplace browser, but much less cluttered. Other features include a Live tile that displays lots of useful marketplace information and the ability to browse Marketplaces from multiple regions.

WP7applist is free. Grab it here from the Marketplace.

Windows Phone Dashboard Beta [Developers]

As a developer I value feedback very highly. Every morning I habitually check for new reviews on my apps to see if there are any suggestions or complaints. I have a big whiteboard with a list of to-do's for each of my apps, and I add their feedback onto that. If you have anything in the Windows Phone Marketplace, I suggest you do the same, or find something similar that works for you - because there is no better way to not make money than to ignore the very people that should be paying you.

This is an interesting infographic posted over on the Windows Phone Developer Blog, which shows data that was accumulated in 2011. While it's aimed at developers, we thought everyone would like to take a peak at how far we've come together. XDA forum member Thunder_ has created an app called Office File Uploader that allows you to move MS Office files directly from your PC to your phone's Office Hub.  Using it is easy. Simply extract the ZIP file from the source link below, connect your phone to your PC and double-click the bookloader.exe file.  Once connected, go to the Office tab and choose what file you want to add to your device by clicking on the upload arrow icon at the bottom.  Make sure your phone is not screen-locked.

Thunder_ discovered that Office File Uploader will also port PDFs over to the Office Hub, which displays them with the red PDF icon that launches Adobe Reader.  However, because the Adobe Reader app does not have access to the My Documents folder on the phone it fails to open them.

New Year's Resolutions. Everyone makes them but not everyone keeps them.

Sometimes it just takes a little help to keep your Resolution and your Windows Phone might do the trick with the right app. The most popular Resolutions likely deal with diet, fitness, financial management, better time management, stopping bad habits (drinking, smoking, betting on the horses, etc), and travel. We have compiled a list of six apps that we think will help you keep your New Year's Resolution or in the least, give you a fighting chance at success.

Mobilewalla lists top-rated apps of 2011

It just wouldn't be late-December without a horde of "Top (fill in the blank) of the Year" lists.  In that tradition, mobile analytics group Mobilewalla has posted their top-rated apps of 2011 list.  However, where most list makers simply compile the most popular or their favorites, Mobilewalla took a different approach.  Using an algorithm consisting of ratings, position within category, popularity, social media, etc., lovingly referred to as the "Mobilewalla Score," they compiled a list based on a score of 100.  From greatest to least, here are the results (click links to download):

  1. TuneIn Radio (Free): 96.7
  2. Penguin (Free): 96.0
  3. Dictionary.com – Dictionary and Thesaurus (Free): 95.7
  4. gMaps (Free): 95.7
  5. PhotoFunia (Free): 95.7
  6. Phone 8 (Paid - $.99): 92.2
  7. Weather Live (Paid - $1.49): 91.7
  8. Fuse (Paid - $1.29): 89
  9. iFun (Paid - $.99): 89
  10. SuperTube (Paid - $1.29): 88.4

Apps from other platforms were also rated.  You can click the via link for the entire thing.

We haven't been covering the whole "Marketplace hits XXX" for awhile now, mostly because it got old, but we're returning for 'the big fiddy' aka 50,000. According to All About Windows Phone, the app store is now at 50,126 items with 17k apps being added within the last 90 days. In fact, though it took a year to hit 40,000 apps in the Marketplace, another 10,000 were added just in the last 40 days, which hints at a strong improvement in rate-of-growth.

However, some caveats do apply here. While there are over 50k apps, not all are available in all regions and some have been pulled by the publisher or Microsoft, meaning they are no longer available. In that sense, the numbers are a little more sobering: "US (42,655), UK (40,305), France (39,235), Spain (37,027), Italy (36,944), Germany (36,958), Australia (37,024), India (36,752) and Singapore (36,922)".

All About Windows Phone also points out though that average number of submissions is now 265 a day which is almost double what it was a month ago when it was just 165--that increase in submissions is most likely due to increased awareness since the Gen 2 devices launched, especially Nokia's push in Europe and Asia.

Other interesting stats note that 58% of apps are free on the Windows Phone Marketplace, with 14% being paid with free trial and 29% are just paid. This figure puts WP7 right in between Android (69% free/31% paid) and iOS (43% free/57% paid).

Finally, rate of growth is important to look at with Windows Phone taking 14 months to reach 50k while Android took 19 months and iOS did it in just 12. The Android numbers show how even a slow-start can lead to explosive growth when all the right pieces are in place (e.g. device availability, advertising, etc.) while iOS was a bit different since it already had around 4 million users even before it launched the Marketplace (that's actually quite impressive). Sill, the Windows Phone Marketplace numbers show very strong growth and it is still very much a competitor against Android and iOS--given enough time.

Reports are coming in that a new Nokia Collection has startled showing up in France's Marketplace.  Much like the HTC, AT&T and other brand-centric app groupings, the Nokia Collection gives customers a central place to go in the Marketplace to download all of Nokia's apps.  The collection is divvied up into categories: Applications, Games, Music and Podcasts.

Due to Marketplace caching, you may not see the Nokia Collection on your phone just yet.  Should you fall in that category, give it a day or two to trickle down.  For those of you who can access it, what do you think?  Have any of our readers outside of France seen this yet?

One of the most popular apps on Nokia's previous mobile operating systems is making its way to the Lumia 710 and 800 tomorrow all devices, now. Sports Tracker is an application designed to help users log their physical activity, as well as share it via social networks.  The development team who originally designed it has decided to bring it to Nokia's newest platform of choice, Windows Phone.  Ykä Huhtala, one of the developers of Sports Tracker, said of the decision:

“Windows Phone is a very competitive platform for mobile development especially if you have any previous experience in developing with Microsoft’s tools.  The same tools can be used in developing for mobile devices and it’s extremely easy and fast to get up to speed in developing apps.”

In order to celebrate the launch of Sports Tracker for WP7, the makers will be giving away a Nokia Lumia 800 on their Facebook page

The application will be available for free in the Marketplace.  You can also keep an eye out for details on their website.

Update: And here's the link for it. We hear it's already available in some areas. Thanks, Clinton J., for the tip!

Updated 2: And it looks like it's available everywhere, US included and for all devices!

CloudMusic is looking for Beta Testers

Celltrac Software is working on the Windows Phone App CloudMusic, a SkyDrive music app, and is looking for a few beta testers. The application taps into your SkyDrive account and allows you to play any music files that you have stored in the cloud.

We've gotten a sneak peak at CloudMusic and the app is laid out in simple fashion with pages for your SkyDrive music collection, what is now playing, recently played songs, and new songs. The app does require you to organize your music in a specific manner in order for CloudMusic to find the tunes.

Just tinkering with the Beta, it does have room for improvement but a nice step in the right direction. Songs took a while to load and you've got to get the music file organization just right. If you're interested in being a beta tester for CloudMusic just email your Windows Live ID to support@celltracsoftware.com.
