Xbox Windows Phone Deal of the Week returns with Assassin's Creed, plus Microsoft Studios Sale news

Does anybody remember the Xbox Deal of the Week for Windows Phone? It started quite humbly back in March 2^nd, 2011 with a sale on Konami’s so-so port of Frogger. The sales rolled on in the weeks to come, typically discounting $5 games down to $3 and $3 games down to $2. Only holiday event sales would grant larger discounts, until the fateful day when Gameloft’s UNO HD became the first 99 cent Deal of the Week on November 14, 2012.

Last year’s Windows Phone Xbox Live Black Friday Week Sale wasn’t terribly exciting, but it did put three games on sale at once, a quantity only equaled in the Countdown to 2012 Sale a month later. A lot has happened between then and now, and today Microsoft has really upped the ante. The 2012 Black Friday Week Sale is live and includes a whopping six discounted Xbox Windows Phone games!

Assassin's Creed slays its own price as the Xbox Live Deal of the Week

Today at E3 we had the pleasure of meeting a few of the fine folks at Gameloft. And what a coincidence, a Gameloft title is now the Xbox Live Deal of the Week. Assassin’s Creed is on sale for $2.99, down from $4.99. While it has experienced a price drop (down from a wallet-killing $6.99) and was part of last year’s Black Friday sale, this is its first official appointment as the DOTW.

Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles (review) is a 3D platformer/action title set in the middle ages. With great graphics and full voice acting (though the acting is atrocious), it feels like a DS game squeezed into a mobile title (‘cause it is). The controls are fiddly and the platforming can be frustrating, but the story and action mostly make up for it.

Assassin’s Creed is on sale for $2.99 for one week only. Get it here on the Marketplace as you prepare for the upcoming console release of Assassin’s Creed 3 (pictured).

Xbox Live: Assassin's Creed for Windows Phone update may be forthcoming

Some of our readers have a duplicate listing for Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles in the Marketplace. Here is the game’s proper Marketplace page, and here is the duplicate. Sharp-eyed readers will detect some differences between the listings. The text formatting on the duplicate page is actually much better than the proper one’s; the game is simply titled Assassin’s Creed with no subtitle; the publisher is Gameloft SA instead of Gameloft; the OS requirement is Windows 7.5; the file size is 10 MB greater; and finally, the version number is 1.2 instead of 1.1.

That last clue may be the explanation for the duplicate’s appearance. In rare cases, a game update may briefly have its own separate listing, possibly for testing purposes. The same thing happened with I Dig It’s long-delayed title update last year. An updated (and purchasable) version appeared separately from the main game, and then disappeared when the main game’s actual update went live. It’s likely that Assassin’s Creed is due for a version 1.2 update (with Mango support) now as well.

Assassin’s Creed costs $4.99 and there is a free trial. We recommend against purchasing the version 1.2 duplicate as you may experience issues redownloading the game after the listing goes away. Just get the proper game here instead, and you’ll be able to safely expect the update, should it be coming.

Xbox Live Black Friday sale looks a bit familiar

Last week, Sonic 4, Full House Poker, and Assassin’s Creed all went on sale for half a day before mysteriously returning to full price. Those three Xbox Live titles are now officially on sale for the week of November 22-28, apparently as part of a Black Friday sale.

Sonic 4: Episode 1 is a 2-dimensional platformer starring the world’s fastest hedgehog. Our review praises its similarity to the XBLA version as well as the touch screen controls, which are the best we’ve encountered in a mobile platformer. Sonic 4 regularly sells for $6.99, but it’s $4.99 this week. Marketplace link

Full House Poker (review) is a single-player Texas Hold ‘Em simulator. Not only was it the first Windows Phone title to feature full Avatar integration, it also shares excellent connectivity with the Xbox 360 version of the game.
