Beem

You’ve heard us go on before about Beem Plus, the dedicated Digitally Imported music streaming client and its new brother, Beem for SKY.FM. The apps are polished, well designed and deliver top quality music to your Windows Phone. Indeed, behind Pandora, Beem Plus is our most used music app (set it on Trance and hop on an elliptical for 40 minutes…it’s a good time).

Both apps usually fetch for a minuscule and well-worth-it $0.99 but the developer behind them, Den Delimarsky, is feeling generous as he’s dropped the price down to $0. And remember folks, once you “buy” an app for free, it’s yours forever.

If you’re a fan of ‘addictive’ electronic music, odds are you use or have used the Digitally Imported website at one point or another. Digitally Imported (di.fm) started out in 1999 and has been a big source of electronic music for over a decade – amassing a loyal set of users and fans. While there isn’t an official app for Windows Phone, we’ve had two killer ones: Beem and Beem Plus, both from developer wunderkind Den Delimarsky.

Beem is being put out to pasture, but the good news is that Beem Plus (which just got an update) is free for the entire month of February. Why the change though?

Beem Plus is a Windows Phone music app that allows users to tap into Digitally Imported music sites and stream various EDM radio stations to their Windows Phones. The DI.FM client was updated the other day to version 1.5 to address a handful of bugs, tweak performance and now supports Last.fm scrobbling.

Scrobbling is basically the system building a profile based on the music you play regularly and makes recommendations based on that profile. With the update, you no longer need to have a specific track name written in your notebook, instead just have it listed in your "Recently Played" table. You can either perform manual scrobbling by tapping the sharing button above the heart (in the station player) or enable auto-scrobbling where, for each opened station, the current track details will be automatically sent to your Last.fm account.

Beem, a Windows Phone app that enables users to tap into the Digitally Imported (www.di.fm) music site, has been updated to 1.3. Billed as being developed to become the 'best possible DI.FM client on Windows Phone' by developer MVP Den Delimarsky, the app has seen praise from us earlier in the year when we included it in our Lumia 900 must-have apps list.

Back in early April we reported on the new streaming music app Beem by Windows Phone Development MVP Den Delimarsky. The app taps into Digitally Imported (www.di.fm), the popular electronic dance music site which features everything from Techno to Trance to Chillout to Progressive making it quite the value. What's more, both the service and app are completely free and the app doesn't even have any ads. Did we mention it's pretty gorgeous too?

Version 1.1 just hit the Marketplace with a bunch of welcomed new features, some of which are extremely impressive:

  • A bug fix that now allows you to re-pin a tile even if it disappears (apparently an OS bug, but there is now a workaround).
  • UI tweaks.
  • Ability to search for played songs in the Zune Marketplace.
  • Ability to record the stream and store it locally for playback (consider this a DVR implementation for DI.FM).
  • Ability to set short recorded music as a ringtone.
  • There is now a "Now Playing” option that allows users to easily jump to the currently playing station.
  • Added the ability to clear the music player (in case you don’t want to see the last played content even though it is paused).

The ability to look the song up in Zune was something we asked for--after all, we want to make use of that Zune Pass--so it's great to see it here. The new feature works flawlessly allowing us to search for the song/artist that's currently playing and then download to our phone directly (something that's very awesome over AT&T's LTE).

But the ability to locally record whatever is playing is the most impressive. The music is saved within the app for later offline playback and is really quite useful. Not only does it record but it shows you how much space in KB it's taking up in real-time. Very cool stuff.

Finally, the rest of the changes are just icing on the cake. The new Tile layout of the stations is quite eye-catching and the app is a must-have for us as we're big fans of downtempo for our background tunes. If Beem sounds like something up your alley then you can grab it right here in the Windows Phone Marketplace (or check out Den's page on the update). The app is on our must-have list for a reason!

Beem is a Digitally Imported client that allows you to stream various EDM radio stations to your Windows Phone. In a nutshell, Beem is a music app that allows you to stream and enjoy various electronic dance music stations from your Windows Phone.

Beem takes advantage of the Windows Phone panoramic layout with pages to display the available stations and your favorite channels. Beem currently streams about forty different dance music stations ranging from Chiptunes (videogame music) to Hardstyle (head banging tunes).

Tap and hold an individual station and a pop up menu will appear with options to pin the station to your Start Screen or add the station to the Favorites Page.  The music may not appeal to everyone but some of the stations aren't too shabby.  If you like music options for your Windows Phone, Beem is worth looking into.

Beem is a free app and you can grab it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
