Bill Gates doesn’t have anything to do with the day-to-day operations of Microsoft. Since stepping down back in 2008, he’s been full-timing it at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world. But he’s still an important figure in the tech world, especially for anyone following Microsoft. He’s also back on top as the world’s richest person.

Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, was interviewed recently by CBS. The well-known figure in the tech industry is running a campaign to build awareness of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The couple have jumped into the deep end when it comes to charity work, but as well as being interviewed and questioned on the foundation, Gates was also answering Microsoft-related questions.

Bill Gates just wrapped up his first AMA on Reddit. In that little PSA post we did a few hours back, one commenter (who wasn’t familiar with Reddit) asked if we could grab the questions and answers. You know we’re a push overs for you guys, ask and you shall receive. Here are all the questions and answers from Bill himself.

My homeboy, William Henry Gates III, started Microsoft back in the mid-1970s. While he stepped down from full-time work over 6 years ago, he’s still Chairman and all around badass. Right now if you mosey on over to Reddit he is doing an AMA – mostly about his current work with the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, but he’s also fielding Microsoft related questions. Bill also posted a video asking a few typical questions before hand, check it out after the break.

It’s always nice to hear chairman and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates share his thoughts on the company’s new strategy. And although he has left day-to-day operations of the company to Ballmer, there’s little doubt that he still has regular input on strategy, design and direction.

The video interview, conducted by Steve Clayton, shows Gates talking about how Windows 8 changes things for the company (he even calls it “Windows 8 Phone”, so yes, it’s a common mistake).

Nothing shocking is revealed but it’s still fun to watch the man talk about Microsoft and this bold, new direction in which they are heading.

No suprise here but Bill Gates has a Samsung Focus and is using it to Tweet , take photos.

When IdentityMine (see our interview here) mentioned that Bill Gates was using their Twitter app, we grew curious. When we saw a photo, we remebered EXIF data and walla...the data above. Guess ol' Bill still gets some perks, eh? Getting a Focus before the rest of us. Congrats Bill and hope you're enjoying it!

ps Love the 'Artist Info'. Nice Easter egg there.

Let us now pay homage to our benevolent overlord, Bill Gates, as he has birthday wishes passed on by none other than Bono and U2. Sure, Bono will sell himself to any tech company that comes a callin', but anything that gets the goat of Fake Steve Jobs is OK by us, too. In other news, Bono also does weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. And look for him to serenade Linus Torvalds on Dec. 28 and Jim Balsille on Feb. 3.

Oh, and Steve Ballmer was spotted dancing backstage.

Rene, our No. 1 frenemy over at The iPhone Blog, points us to an article in this month's Vogue magazine that — Hang on. My phone's ringing.

What's that, Rene? You don't actually read Vogue, it's an article that GeekSugar and Gizmodo picked up? Sure, sure, I'll mention that. Don't think anyone'll believe me, but anything for you, pal.

Sorry about that. Where were we? Oh, yes, the article. See, Melinda Gates, wife of one of the richest men in the world, sat down with Vogue and let slip that iPhones and iPods are banned in the Gates household, even though she occasionally thinks they're kinda cool.

“There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household,” Gates tells me. “But iPods and iPhones are two things we don’t get for our kids.” Harsh, perhaps, but understandable. After all, it’s hard to walk around tethered to merchandise made by your father’s most famous competitor. Still, Gates acknowledges the inevitable lure of forbidden fruit. “Every now and then I look at my friends and say, ‘Ooh, I wouldn’t mind having that iPhone.’”

So, no iFun in the Gates household. Which leads us to the following question:

How do they prop open their doors?

The big news this week is that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs will be sharing a stage and throttling each other talking for an hour or so. Also big news this week, Palm's attempting to re-establish their relevance by announcing a mystery device. Both are happening at Walt Mossberg's exclusive D: All Things Digital Conference. Both are big deals to us here at WMExperts, so we're heading out to San Diego for the conference. Or rather, to haunt the halls outside the conference like serfs at the king's gate, as registration for the event is four grand and press passes have been wait-listed since there were literally "serfs" hanging around kings' gates.

So expect sporadic updates (but also expect some T-Mobile Wing video fun - post questions about the device here) in the next couple of days. With any luck, we'll be able to get some surprises in here too.

Apple, Inc., CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, the seminal figures in the development of the personal computer, will make a rare joint appearance at The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference this year. The two men will jointly discuss the history and future of the digital revolution in an unrehearsed, unscripted, onstage conversation on May 30 with D co-producers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher
