Nokia has managed to get the Lumia 520 Windows Phone through certification in Brazil. The smartphone was unveiled at Mobile World Congress and has impressed many with its unique design and incredible price tag. We're looking at 139 euros for the Windows Phone, but vNext expects the local price in Brazil to be more like R$ 599 ($300).

Nokia will be launching the Lumia 920 on February 14th, according to a report over on Gizmodo. The flagship Windows Phone will be available for R$1,999 (approximately $1,000) and in the black version. The pricing may appear to be slightly on the high side, but Nokia will attempt to dampen the blow with a USB portable DC-16 charger (not wireless) bundled with the first customers who pre-order the handset.

Cissa Magazine, a popular Brazilian retail website, has announced that they will be getting a plethora of Windows Phone 8 handsets. In this case, a plethora means the Samsung ATIV S and Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and 620. According to Cissa Magazine's comment on WindowsPhoneBrazil's page, the phones will be available in early February...

Sure we love bringing you folks the latest on Windows Phone 8 or what executive is leaving Microsoft this week, but what many of you really want to know is what about the 7.8 upgrade?

While we still don’t know what it will contain, or rather if it will have more than just a new Start screen, we always knew it was destined to come after Windows Phone 8 comes out. Now, Windows Phone Brazil (official Twitter account), has responded to a question about that update to current Windows Phones.  The answer is that the 7.8 update is expected for Brazil in Q1 2013, which sounds about right to us (and is vague enough to leave some wiggle room).

Brazilian Windows Phone owners have always complained about the lack of games (including Xbox Live titles) available for the platform, and rightly so. The Brazilian government has strict regulations that require video games (or any 'game') to be certified by its own ratings system, which has proven to heavily delay the release of said games to the Windows Phone Marketplace for owners in the region.

We previously looked at Microsoft adding a batch of 300 titles to increase available content on the Marketplace, but still numbers dwindled compared to other regions. Today, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice filed a statement that plans were in place for games to be certified by distribution companies themselves.

Boring phone with outrageous price?

We’ve reported on Samsung’s Omnia M phone in the past noting that their latest phone is a low-end, borderline Tango entry meant for new and developing markets. That translates into ho-hum specs (4” display, 1GHz CPU, 4GB storage, 5MP camera) and in theory, a low-entry price.

For whatever reason though, we’re not seeing Samsung place nice with local markets with their pricing of the Omnia M borderline unreasonably high for such a mediocre device...

We've been informed the Lumia 900 Windows Phone is available to pre-order from Nokia in Brazil. The choice of black, cyan or white is present at a price tag of R$ 1.799,00 (about $880 / £560). The Lumia 900 is Nokia's flagship Windows Phone, sporting a 4.3" AMOLED display (with Clear Black technology), 1.4Ghz CPU, 8MP shooter (with FF camera) and 16GB storage.

No word has been given on the release date (though the website says "buy"), and Nokia's Lumia Momentum Map is of no help. We'll keep you guys posted once more information comes to light. Will you be ordering a shiny new Lumia 900?

According to a Brazilian Nokia blog, Microsoft has reportedly added over 300 games to the regional Marketplace boosting it from just over 90 games the other day. Most thoughts will now be: "wait, what?" and rightfully so. It would appear as though the Brazil Marketplace is restricted by tighter certification regulations than other markets. This requires a clear guide to be published on each title that is available on the Marketplace detailing censorship (much like PEGI) and approval by the Ministry of Justice.

Google with their Android Play market reportedly gets around this by hosting the content in the US and having it only accessible via web (and paid in US dollars).

We'd like to chime in with a quick search performed by us reveals that some of these newly added titles don't sport visible ratings -- The Impossible Game being a good example, though it's good to see more content being added for markets to download and enjoy. There's nothing worse than owning a smartphone, yet not being able to access the catalogue of content.

With the new additions, the Brazilian Windows Phone Marketplace now boasts over 7,000 titles which is a start.

To celebrate the launch of the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 in Brazil this week, Nokia has teamed up with Microsoft to host the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge. Although the presentation is in native tongue, most of us can still follow the cheesy music and the humiliation of challengers.

It has been relatively quiet on the Brazilian front with Windows Phone, but both the Lumia 710 and 800 are now officially available for purchase.

Seems like everyone is getting the 8107 update today, well everyone except us in the States. Now we're getting word from a few readers that those down in Brazil who have the HTC TITAN, which goes by the name of HTC Ultimate down there, is getting two updates: 7740 followed by 8107.

No other goodies on board but why would you need anything else when you're getting two solid OS updates in a row? (For the record, if you get 8107 you always get 7740 before hand if you don't already have it). That's one more country/device down though for that nasty keyboard bug!

Thanks, Jonathan S. & Ricardo T., for the tips!

Good news for those in Brazil, you can add the Nokia Lumia 710 to your Samsung Omnia W and HTC Ultimate (aka Titan). The news comes from WinPhone Blog (fan site) who noticed that the mid-range phone passed Anatel, that country's equivalent of the FCC. While no release date is specified, the rest of the filings info is confidential till January 1st, 2012 but from previous experience, WPB expects a mid-January release.

The Lumia 710 should be a popular phone with it mid-level specs and solid design. No word on pricing or carrier, so we'll keep an ear out.

Samsung Omnia W gets Brazilian

The Samsung Omnia W, which was approved by Anatel (Brazil's version of the FCC) earlier this month and was rumored to be heading to TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), has popped up for sale on Brazil's FNAC.  This is an unlocked version that is selling for R$ 1299.00, or about $799.00 US.  The price tag seems a little bit steep, even for an unlocked handset.  But it's not so bad, considering they are asking R$ 1799.00 for a Blackberry Bold.   The Omnia W is a solid mid-range WP7.5 phone, equipped with:
  • Super AMOLED screen of 3.7 "
  • 8 GB of storage
  • 512 of RAM
  • VGA Front Camera
  • Rear 5 MP camera with LED Flash and Autofocus
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Dimensions of 115.6 x 58.8 x 10.9 mm
  • Weight 115 g
  • DNLA
  • WiFi HotSpot

Brazil already launched the HTC Ultimate aka Titan, so why stop there? Looks like TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) is slated to get the Samsung Omnia W to compliment the Ultimate in that country.

The news comes via WinPhoneBlog Brazil, who confirm that the device has passed Anatel (that country's version of the FCC) including pics of the battery, charger and even the full manual (PDF) for your perusal.  In case your forgot the specs of the Omnia W:

  • Super AMOLED screen of 3.7 "
  • 8 GB of storage
  • 512 of RAM
  • VGA Front Camera
  • Rear 5 MP camera with LED Flash and Autofocus
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Dimensions of 115.6 x 58.8 x 10.9 mm
  • Weight 115 g
  • DNLA
  • WiFi HotSpot

In other words, a solid middle of the road phone, which seems like good marketing. No word on release or pricing, but it should only be a matter of time before we find out.

Now that the HTC Ultimate is available in Brazil, people need to know about it.  That's where this full-page ad in Brazil's Veja magazine comes in.  Veja is a weekly publication that tackles culture, politics, economics and entertainment.  According to Wikipedia, "it is the leading weekly publication in the country, and one of the most influential outlets of the Brazilian press."

It looks like the folks at Microsoft and HTC have made good on their promise to start marketing WP7 around the world.  Both HTC and Samsung, with help from Microsoft, have committed more money to advertising in order to push the new features of Mango and hopefully jump to #3 in the smartphone operating system race.

If you live in Brazil and you've been itching for the HTC Ultimate aka Titan, you'll be pleased to know it's now available (though limited supply) on Vivo for R$1,800 (about $1,000 USD), just as we reported earlier.

The 4.7" Windows Phone Mango device is one heck of a first for the country and should make a lot of new customers happy. Gizmodo Brazil has some hands on with the phone and seem quite impressed with both the hardware and OS (who can blame them?), noting that the 1.5GHz CPU makes the OS very fast. They also noted the quality of the screen was also top notch--not iPhone Retina great but up there, nonetheless.

Only complaint is a common one: the Marketplace is very limited, with only a few games available. Microsoft evidently responded to the criticism:

"In that first moment, we have 10 games in the franchise available on Xbox LIVE marketplace Brazil by the end of October. Microsoft wants to bring more titles, but as is necessary to follow the Brazilian legislation indicative classification, cash will not be simultaneous to the United States."

So all in all a pretty solid launch, but there's certainly room for improvement on the services side. Check the hands on video after the break for some eye candy.

We've mentioned how the HTC Ultimate aka Titan, with its massive 4.7" Super LCD screen managed to pass through Brazil's FCC equivalent ANATEL. That's a pretty good sign that the phone is coming to Brazil sooner than later, heck we even saw its accessories and manual to boot.

Now we have a date for its announcement (but not release): October 20th

On that day, HTC is set to reveal "the launch of the year" with Lee Ittner, Vice President from HTC Latin America, Cristina Palmaka from MS Brasil and Hilton Mende from Vivo (a Brazilian carrier) in attendance.

At the press conference, we can expect to see the Ultimate née Titan in its full glory and we bet a release date will be given too. Our guess is it won't be more than a few weeks into November, which gives you some time to save up for that slick phone!

About two weeks ago we broke the news of some new device names appearing in the app "I'm a WP7!". The first was the Radar 4G which within days became to be known as T-Mobile's new Mango phone coming this holiday season. Now, we can shed some light on another mystery phone: the HTC Ultimate.

The Ultimate, by name alone, sounds to be a massive offering and indeed it appears to be the HTC Titan, but for other markets. In this case, the Ultimate is the official name of the Titan for Brazil. The information comes by way of the Brazilian ANATEL, the regulatory agency analogous to the FCC in that country. The full device manual has been posted (and shared with us) including photos of the Ultimate along with its accessories.

Now, to be clear, we don't have the specifications of the Ultimate except for the battery: 1600 mAh, the same size as the Titan. In addition, from the photos, it looks to be an exact match so we're going to just assume they're the same phones--but you can be the final judge.

The good news is the Titan née Ultimate, is coming to Brazil. The bad news is the Ultimate née Titan, is not some super-awesome unannounced Windows Phone and instead, HTC appears to be just offering two Mango devices this holiday season.

Big thanks to Albert P., for the information!
