browser plus

If you used 'Browser Plus' or the photo-sharing app 'Bubblegum', two of our favorites around here, then you've used programs developed by Microsoft employees on their spare time. In this case, 'Browser Plus' was written by Sriram Krishnan and 'Bubblegum' was written by Sriram and his wife Aarthi Ramamurthy, on their honeymoon. (Aarthi recently announed her departure from the company).

But what makes that dynamic so unique is that these engineers (and over 3,000 others) were able to write these apps in their spare-time and profit from their work. That's different because usually software engineers are encouraged not to work in their spare time, since their ideas and creative energy get company priority. In other words, this was a big shift for Microsoft who went from discouragement to literally throwing pizza parties and openly promoting their employees work.

The change is due to the effort of many on the WP7 team who pushed for allowing employees to work in their spare time and to make money from it. Now we're starting to see the results from the reversal and truth be told their seems to be a re-invigoration behind the company and its employees, something that Google learned awhile ago (they still allow 20% of their employees' paid time to be devoted to personal projects). To that end, we say to everyone at Microsoft, keep up the good work.

Read more at the NY Times and check out Sriram's blog here. Finally, we wish Aarthi good luck with her new pursuits!

While Browser Plus has been making steady strides in functionality, Browse On showed up with a few tricks too. Now a 3rd browsing shell for Mobile IE has showed itself: Metro Browser.

Developed by Adam Nathan, the browser looks to hit the sweet spot in terms of features:

  • Full-screen portrait browsing gives 24% more page than IE, 31% more page than Browser Plus!
  • Orientation lock
  • Extensive theming
  • Slick management of tabs, favorites, history, and frequently-visited sites
  • Tons of behavioral customizations, including choosing Google vs. Bing for searches and auto-complete
  • Lots of other little bells and whistles, such as searching the Windows Phone Marketplace with apps:XXX text

Sounds pretty killer to us and we like this back-and-forth competition between developers. Look for a video tomorrow, we're gonna go play.

Grab the app here, including a free trial. Visit Adam's page here.

The popular Browser+ addon for Mobile Internet Explorer (see previous coverage) just got bumped to v1.5 and is now available in the Marketplace, still for $0.99.

Version 1.5 is pretty significant in that it adds Favorites support, a feature that many have been clamoring for since v1.0. Overall, the addition of Favorites works flawlessly, allowing easy access to your bookmarks, adding a new bookmark and seeing browser history.

No other changes are noted but we think the addition of Favorites will go a long way to getting people to use this browser full time now. Oh, and the developer, Sriram Krishnan, lets us know he has some "interesting stuff planned" for future updates.

Grab the program here (opens Zune Desktop).

While we took a look at Browser Plus a few weeks ago, the add-on to Mobile Internet Explorer that gave us tabbed browsing, a new contender has come forth to offer some similar and unique features.

Browse On goes for $0.99 in the Marketplace and it's biggest selling point would be the ability to open a new Tab in Landscape and type in the web address directly. That's because in normal Mobile IE and Browser Plus, the address bar is not available in Landscape, requiring you to switch orientation, type, then switch back. The second selling point is the full screen mode in Portrait. This feature auto-hides the address bar in the default orientation, give you more browsing space.

Overall, the look and speed of the app is great and while it lacks "incognito" and "reader" modes like Browser Plus, the full screen emphasis and better landscape browsing make it a worthy app. No trial mode is available.

Find it here (opens Zune desktop).

The other day we reported on the new $0.99 Browser Plus, which adds tabbed browsing to Mobile Internet Explorer. One downside was the lack of landscape support and also some complained it was slow on loading.

Now the developer, Sriram Krishnan who works for Microsoft, has already cranked out an update and we have to give it a huge thumbs up. Landscape support is now enabled and works extremely well and allowing tabs to be fully visible. It also seems to load web pages more quickly and "Private Mod" has been fixed to read just "Private" now, which allows traceless browsing.

If you were hesitant before, you shouldn't be now as this is now our default browser on our phone. Watch the video to see the new features in action.

Last night in the Marketplace, a new app launched called Browser+ for $0.99. The app runs a modified shell over Mobile Internet Explorer adding new functionality to the browser not yet seen in the native app. That's a pretty significant addition as up to this point, it was unclear if this could be done in WP7.

Browser+ adds tabbed browsing like your desktop, in addition to an incognito mode for hiding web history and also quick access to the search bar (though with a dedicated search button, this seems less necessary). Overall the tabbed browser works just great--it's simple and intuitive as well as the incognito mode. Only downside is no landscape support, which is a serious drawback for some and hopefully something the developer may add in the future.

There is no try-before-you-buy here, so you have to drop $0.99 on it try give it a spin, but at that price, we think it's worth it.
