Windows Phone Xbox Live Review: BulletAsylum

Does anybody remember the 1980 arcade game Missile Command? It was quite a hit back at the dawn of the vidja game phenomenon, though we haven’t seen too many modern sequels beyond the updated XBLA and iPhone versions. Indie developer UberGeekGames (one word) certainly seems familiar with Missile Command, and the tiny team has created a modern tribute in the form of BulletAsylum (also one word). Microsoft considers this a ‘Must Have Game,’ but sadly you won’t find much depth beneath its flashy exterior.

Windows 7 users (i.e. most people with a computer) who also play Windows Phone games can enjoy an abundance of desktop themes based on WP7 games. Last week we showed you the Chickens Can’t Fly theme, which is certainly good for a few laughs. Now a Bullet Asylum theme joins the fray.

Like Chickens Can’t Fly before it, the Bullet Asylum theme includes includes wallpapers, sounds, and colors based on UberGeekGames’ Must Have title. To be honest, the backgrounds don’t remind me of the game all that much. Do you see any trippy explosions in the pics above? I didn’t think so. But they do capture a nice sci-fi vibe, at any rate.

You can find the Bullet Asylum Windows 7 theme pack here at the Windows download page. As for Bullet Asylum the game, it costs $2.99 from the Marketplace.

Following Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, the second Must Have Game of 2012 is now upon us. Bullet Asylum from UberGeekGames and Microsoft Studios has hit the Marketplace.

Bullet Asylum, which WPCentral previewed earlier this week, is a modern update to the classic Missile Defense formula. Aliens rain down from the sky and it’s up to your turrets to stop them. You can use a single finger to fire all your weapons at one area or two fingers to split the fire. Game modes include the extremely easy Arcade, an endless Survival mode that has no Achievements for some reason, and the frustratingly hard Architect mode. Seriously, what were they thinking with Architect?

That one mode notwithstanding, Bullet Asylum is a mostly easy shooter to zone out to. Plus it has the flashy neon graphics that we all love and a fair upgrade unlocking system... Just wait till you see the Peace Mode modifier; it’s a trip.

Bullet Asylum costs $2.99 and there is a free trial. Get it here on the Marketplace and help stop those aliens!

Yes folks, that time is upon us, the time for some "must have" Xbox LIVE games for our phones. This week's title is Bullet Asylum a so-called "bullet hell" game of which we have had very few (see OMG though for something similar or the indie Decimation X2)

The game will be priced at a very fair $2.99 and we've been putting it through its paces the last few days--so far, we like what we see. The game has exceptional neo-retro graphics, excellent sound and music and plenty of games to choose from.

You have three main game choices available:

  • Arcade - Traditional "waves" of enemies of increasing difficulty with a boss every 5th wave
  • Survival - Maxed out weapons and defenses? Great, here's some maxed out enemies!
  • Architect - Start off with some credits and customize your towers and defenses for a unique twist

Bullet Asylum is a lot of fun and it's quite challenging. You can use just one shooter at a time or choose to use two for more precision. We like the options for controls and the sound effects are pretty top notch, so we're giving this classic-arcade type game a thumbs up. Look for it this Wednesday for $2.99 in the Marketplace.

Don't forget next week's game is Chicken's Can't fly (2/15, $2.99), followed by Splinter Cell: Conviction (2/22, $4.99) and finally Toy Solders: Boot Camp (2/29, $2.99).

Last year’s Must Have Games promotion kicked off in May, but this year it’s coming in February. Since Microsoft announced the February lineup at CES, we’ve been left wondering over the specific release date and price of each game. Wonder no more, Windows Phone gamers, as Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) spilled the remaining beans on his blog today.

  • Need For Speed Hot Pursuit – 02/01 - $4.99
  • Bullet Asylum – 02/8 - $2.99
  • Chickens Can't Fly – 02/15 - $2.99
  • Splinter Cell Conviction – 02/22 - $4.99
  • Toy Soldiers Boot Camp – 02/29 - $2.99

No real surprises there. The two more technically impressive games will cost $4.99, not unlike last year’s Hydro Thunder Go. I’m slightly saddened that my most-wanted game, Toy Soldiers: Boot Camp is coming last, but they all look like fine games. If you need a refresher on the portable Toy Soldiers entry, check out our interview with the game’s developers.

Which game(s) are you most looking forward to, dear readers?

Microsoft is giving a preview of five new Xbox Live games today at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show. No specifics on pricing or in which order these games will be released and some of these titles we've heard mention of before.  They all look really nice and as we learn more about these titles we'll definitely pass it along.

We like it when leaks happen. We like it even more when they come from Microsoft and are out in the open. Yes, on the Xbox LIVE for Windows Phone 7.5 page, Microsoft lists a bunch of games, most of which we already have or know about. But in the post, they also slip in a few new titles that get us excited:

Bullet Asylum - From UberGeekGames, Bullet Asylum was first announced for WP7, Xbox 360 and PC way back in late 2010. Looks like the Missile Command meets bullet-hell game will finally see the light of day soon though. We're not gonna lie, this looks awesome.

geoDefense Swarm - geoDefense by Critical Thought remains one of our favorite tower defense games so we're stoked to hear of a sequel not only in the works, but evidently close enough to release that Microsoft is listing it. Swarm is available on iOS and is a proper sequel to the game, so nice to see it coming to our neck of the woods.

Tamagotchi - No word on the specifics here but anyone familiar with those little Japanese electronic-pet games knows what to expect. The image below is from an iOS version from Namco, which may be the port here.

Age of Zombies - This one is from Halfbrick makers of Fruit Ninja, so you know it has to be good. Available on iOS and Android, this is your typical arcade shooter/adventure game. No doubt this will have some great humor and will be an excellent casual game.

No word on release dates for any of the above but we're hoping for sooner than later as these look like some strong titles.
