christmas

MeTweets will be free for everyone on Christmas Day, thanks to the developer celebrating the festive period. On December 25th, those who don't already own the Twitter app will be able download the full version from the Store for free. It's a superb present from the developer of a highly rated Windows Phone app, and one which we recommend.

SantaRacer updated, snow in the forecast

If you're looking for a simple, fun Windows Phone game, take a look at SantaRacer. The game was recently updated to version 2.0 with a new game engine under the hood and improved graphics that include snow fall.

SantaRacer has you guiding Santa and his sleight up a hill collecting presents and avoiding flying rocks along the way. If you hit a rock, you lose a reindeer. Run out of time or reindeers and the game's over.  SantaRacer is a fun game to pass the time with and has a bit of challenge.

Just as the Nokia Cardboard Challenge comes to a complete closure the company has kicked off another competition for consumers to participate in. Also celebrating the festive period, the Nokia Paper Challenge is a perfect opportunity to use up the leftover wrapping paper (or newspaper, magazine, flyer, pamphlet, etc. if you don't celebrate with presents in December) to create Nokia products and win prizes.

Microsoft has been busy celebrating Windows Phone 8 alongside the Christmas period, with stalls set up in several markets in Germany. The country is well known for its Christmas markets (we even have them here in the UK) and WParea managed to trek down to one in Hamburg Ottensen where a Windows Phone hut was discovered.

Microsoft recently published a video on its Windows Phone YouTube channel that featured Misfit Toys and 'Bumble' (The Abominable Snow Monster of the North) for a new Windows Phone 8 commercial. The team is back with another festive themed commercial featuring not only the Snow Monster, but Santa Clause who is enjoying a quick dip before the mad rush to deliver presents to kids around the world.

In a nice nod to nostalgia, Microsoft has made a Bing commercial featuring the toys from the 1964 TV special 'Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer' in addition to that troubled little elf, Hermey.

While Yukon Cornelius drags the misfits on a sled, he soon pops his back. Hermey, now technologically modern, whips out a little clay-mation Windows Phone and Bings 'hot yoga'. Both hilarious and informative, the commercial is our new favorite. But that's the power of childhood memories for you.

Hyper Defence XT Christmas Edition

We've seen Bubble Birds get into the Holiday spirit and now the popular tower defense game Hyper Defence XT is getting into the spirit as well. The Windows Phone game was updated to version 2.0 and brings a new Christmas Bonus level to the full version.

Hyper Defence XT's update also adds:

  • New difficulty settings (easy, medium and classic)
  • Level awards to win depending on the difficulty
  • Six new enemies to deal with.

Hyper Defence XT has 16 levels of play (17 with the Christmas Bonus), 8 upgradeable defense turrets, and a Survival Mode where everything but the kitchen sink is thrown at you. We found Hyper Defence XT (here's our review) to be a very good tower defense game for your Windows Phone.

There is a free trial version available for Hyper Defence XT and the full version is running $1.29. You can find Hyper Defence XT here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

We previously touched on YuleTile, an app to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. According to the developer, Mendzapp, 10% of the revenue earned from sales of YuleTile will be donated to charity (Railway Children). But if the app and charity donations weren't enough to put you in a good mood, how about a Windows Phone Christmas card design? That's right, now you can send Metro UI festive cards to family and friends.

If you're not aware of YuleTile, it's a Christmas advent calendar app that features wallpapers, ringtones and an ingenious use of the live tiles. Each day the live tile updates to show the appropriate advent window. From here the app can be entered, window opened and one of the twenty-five hand-painted images revealed. This image is now featured on your home-screen until tomorrow’s window is ready to be opened. Really neat for all those Scrooges.

Head on over to MyKindofPhone's Posterous page below to download the design. You can download YuleTile from the Marketplace for 79p ($0.99), remember that 10% goes to a good cause.

Need a boost to get you into the Christmas spirit? YuleTile is a collection of Holiday wallpapers and ringtones to give your Windows Phone that Christmas feel.

With each passing day, the YuleTile main page will fill with Christmas images and from the three-dot menu you can save the images to your Windows Phone and access daily Christmas ringtones. YuleTile also has a Live Tile that will count down the days until Christmas.  The layout of the app is simple and interface for saving ringtones and wallpapers equally straight forward.

Yuletile does have a free trial with the full version running $.99. The developer, Mendzapp, is a student start-up app development business based in Sheffield, UK and has pledged that 10% of the profits on YuleTile will go towards a children's charity. YuleTile is a mango app and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Recently at the Imagine Cup 2011, happening right here in New York City, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave his usual keynote speech.

Towards the middle, he finally gave a nod to Windows Phone and even dropped some info regarding the 2nd generation "Mango" phones that we're all expecting late this year, including Nokia's entry:

"Windows Phone. You know, a year ago we didn't have a phone in the market. Now, we're charging forward with Nokia. We have the second generation of our phones coming out this Christmas, and people are starting to do things they had never imagined before. I love the applications that I saw for the Windows Phone from the people in this room, and the way you're pushing that device, and using that device. It was really exciting for me."

Some folks are interpreting his remarks as a sign of slippage on "Mango's" release, noting how Christmas is a few days post-Fall.

We're a bit more hesitant to make such a claim as it raises the question: Are new WP7 hardware releases tied to the software update? We're betting on "no". New hardware has a much more flexible release schedule and we see no inclination that Microsoft will hold off on the "Mango" software updates for current devices until new hardware comes out. Sure, it could happen, but we're not betting on it. Instead, we'll probably see a rolling out of new hardware over a few months ending 2011 into 2012. In other words, not much of a story here.
