We like our indie developers who make some fun casual games for Windows Phone, so seeing Pirate Cat available we'll take it. Cats people, it has cats...

The game is made by Xeno Bits and has an 1920's silent movie feel to it with black and white graphics and a catchy piano soundtrack. From the description:

"The captain found THE map, but it does not really lead to the expected location... Actually, it takes to the moon, and he thought that sending you there to dig up the treasure would be a great idea.

You are the Pirate Cat, and you have to reach the moon by using your brand new handmade wings, hitting birds and collecting feathers to keep flying. Try to reach the moon before the break of dawn!"

The game is fun, has cool challenges with trophies and superb graphics for an enjoyable experience. What's more, through June 1st you can grab the game for absolutely free--no ads, no catches--making this a great opportunity to pick up a quick little gem of a game.

You can grab Pirate Cat here in the Marketplace and make sure to leave the dev some positive ratings if you like it.

Amazon Wireless has some pretty enticing deals, much like Amazon itself, but the online retailer is now offering the black AT&T Lumia 900 4G Windows Phone for just $9.99 when upgrading, or $39.99 when adding a new line. The Nokia smartphone, which boasts a 5-star rating on Amazon Wireless from 342 customers, is the culprit behind the delays that have occurred in Europe due to high demand in the states.

Powered by a 1.4 single-core chip, and featuring 16GB storage, an 8MP rear-shooter (with FF), 4.3" AMOLED display with ClearBlack technology, and 512MB RAM, the Lumia 900 is definitely no slouch. Will you be picking yours up?

We haven't covered the popular Twitter app Tweet It! in quite some time so now feels about right. Tweet It! won our praise months ago for breaking the tradition of super-Metro Twitter apps that are out in force on the Marketplace. Featuring a unique UI, "Street mode" for walking, orientation lock, shake-to-refresh and more, the app is full of interesting surprises and stands apart from the crowd.

Because it's the developers birthday, the app has gone from its normal $1.99 to free for the next 48 hours. Call us crazy, but that's a pretty good deal even if not sure if you'll like it (but we think you will).

Since our coverage, the app has had a major revision in version 3.0.The changes are welcomed including excellent scrolling capability and fast loading (try the "Post Tweet" tile). But don't take our word for it. Go download it now, take it for a spin and let us know your thoughts.

Pick up Tweet it! for free here in the Windows Phone Marketplace, you won't regret it. And happy birthday, Khamidov Timur!

HTC TITAN available at AT&T for just a penny

Should the Nokia Lumia 900 be not up your street, and if 4G LTE connectivity isn't a feature you're particularly bothered about, the HTC TITAN is a highly rated Windows Phone and could well be the right one for you. We reviewed this beast of a handset (and it's successor), which is also backed by strong reviews from AT&T customers.

AT&T's web store is listing the Windows Phone for $0.01 (with 2-year contract), a good snatch for anyone interested. Featuring a massive 4.7" LCD screen, 16GB storage, 8MP camera, and a 1.5Ghz chip, the TITAN is capable of handling whatever you decide to throw at the device.  While the penny sale is a very nice deal, unfortunately the off-contract is still stuck at $549.99.

YouTube Pro in disguise as SuperTube for Windows Phone

We reported last week that with Microsoft's new Marketplace policy enforcement, trademark complaints will be acted upon more quickly than before. As a result, all things Google are being pulled due to their use of terms like "YouTube", "Google", etc.

One of those apps was YouTube Pro made by Fast Code.

YouTube Pro was actually a re-launch of SuperTube, one of the original third party YouTube apps and one of the first to do HD and HQ video playback on Windows Phone. YouTube Pro superseded SuperTube, though Fast Code kept both up to date (each had a "pay" version in addition to free).

Now in a funny twist, YouTube Pro is gone from the Marketplace so the old SuperTube is back as their main app for video streaming. The app itself though looks exactly like YouTube Pro including the very Metro inspired UI.

There was a paid, ad-free version of the app but due to the YouTube Pro/Google complaint situation, developer Fast Code is now offering the paid version of SuperTube for free for a limited time. That means you can get some of the best YouTube features on Windows Phone not even for a nickel. Those features include some new stuff in version 2.3:

  • Lift restrictions of trial version on downloading and syncing videos
  • New Metro design
  • New channels page
  • New channel and message live tile. The front of channel tile will show the numbers of new videos. The back will show thumbnail of the newest video.
  • Add the subscription page after sign in on the main page
  • Fix bugs

That's on top of video downloading, video uploading to your account, HD and HQ video playback, comments, like/dislike and a Live Tile. What's not to like about this offer?

Go get SuperTube v2.3 for free here in the Marketplace. Remember, this is the paid version marked-down, so lock it in now for future updates.

This morning, Microsoft announced a new partnership with Barnes & Noble for their eReader business having settled the previous litigation on claimed patent infringement.

The new subsidiary of Barnes & Noble called Newco (not the real name, just a placeholder to be determined later) will focus on the digital and college business of the company. Microsoft is investing $300 million into the venture and will maintain a 17.6% equity stake in the new company.

Of course it should come as no surprise that a NOOK eReader will be one of the first priorities of the nw partnership with a client for Windows 8 in the works. Barnes & Noble commented on the newly announced deal noting:

“The formation of Newco and our relationship with Microsoft are important parts of our strategy to capitalize on the rapid growth of the NOOK business, and to solidify our position as a leader in the exploding market for digital content in the consumer and education segments,” said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Microsoft’s investment in Newco, and our exciting collaboration to bring world-class digital reading technologies and content to the Windows platform and its hundreds of millions of users, will allow us to significantly expand the business.”

Although lots of pundits like to criticize Microsoft for "patent trolling" others would claim that the company is looking out for their shareholder's interest by defending what they see as their intellectual property. Despite this, some saw in B&N as standing up to Microsoft, fighting them publicly in the matter. Instead, B&N made a deal with the devil perhaps even angering Google along the way (Android powers the new Nook eReader).

Either way, Microsoft's strategy seems to be paying off for although B&N does not have to admit any guilt for the claimed violations, they clearly were forced to the table for what looks to be an exciting deal for both companies. In fact, this could be the lifeline the fading book retailer needs in its life and death struggle with adversary Amazon.com.

No mention of a Windows Phone client has been announced which has been missing since Windows Mobile and the HTC HD2. However, rumors suggest that Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are based on the same kernel and have large amounts of overlapping code. As a result the announcement of a Windows 8 client may in fact be a dual one for Windows Phone.

Regardless, you can imagine B&N will be getting some favorable treatment from Microsoft in the future. Something that Apple and Google will have trouble in matching. For this, we' very excited by this deal (even if we're Kindle fans here).

In a jaw-dropping deal that just took place, social network empire Facebook has bought photo-sharing hipster site Instagram for $1 billion in a combination of cash and Facebook shares.

Instagram as grown to be one of the largest mobile-photo sharing sites on the internet with 27 million users, almost exclusively due to the iPhone. Within the last week, the site finally launched their much anticipated Android client and it quickly shot up to the #1 free app under Social on the platform, showing just how popular it is amongst users. (In a funny blow-back, the über hipsters on iOS are evidently upset their retro-photo garden of Eden is being disrupted by the unruly 'Droid users, with some giving up the service. Yeah.)

However, one thorn in the side of Windows Phone is the fact that the Instagram service is unavailable to our audience. What's more, they evidently won't allow third-party access either, leaving us out in the dark. This deal, however frightening in size, is good news for Microsoft who own a 1.6% share of Facebook with a large investment made back in 2007 (when the young social network really needed the money and support). Even more recently, Bing search now shows up on the log-out page for the site and Bing Translator handles language translation within the network itself.

As a result, we can probably expect not only an Instagram client (assuming one is already not in the works) but a strategic alliance between Facebook and the photo-sharing network, perhaps giving Windows Phone a slight edge in the future. It will be interesting to see what happens, especially since Facebook and Google don't get a long very well.

The Belgium carrier Telenet has the Lumia 800 Windows Phone priced at just €1 when purchased with the attached €45 /mo contract. While the plan is relatively expensive, to be able to pick up this Nokia handset for just one Euro is pretty darn attractive. As a recap, the handset sports a 1.4Ghz processor, 8MP camera (with Carl Zeiss optics), 16GB storage, and a 3.7" AMOLED screen with Clear Black technology

Be sure to check out our Lumia 800 review should you require more information about the device.

As we're always on the hunt here for great deals, it's nice to find this one from New Zealand Telecom. They're evidently offering a $0 down package on either the Nokia Lumia 710 or the Lumia 800.

The fine print states that you need to sign up for "Talk & Text Anytime or Smartphone $60 plan or higher for 24 months" for the Lumia 710 deal or an $80 plan for the more pricey Lumia 800.

If that sounds like something for you or a companion, head to their site to get more details.

Even though AT&T proper is offering the HTC TITAN for a penny, for those of you who like to shop at Fry's you may want to head there this weekend. They have the 3-month old phone for free (with a 2 year contract extension or new contract) which is a heck of a deal for such a great phone (seriously, best camera for a Windows Phone yet).

Also worthy of mention is the T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 which is also free with the same terms and the old-school Samsung Focus, unlocked and contract free, for $269. Good deals all around.

The LG Optimus 7 is available unlocked for an incredibly low price of just $159. The special offer is at Catch Of The Day, an Australian deal site, but you'll have to act fast should you wish to snap a purchase as the handset is only at this price for another 13 hours.

The Optimus 7 (some hands-on footage) is a solid first generation Windows Phone, packing a 3.8" display, 1Ghz CPU, 5MP shooter and 16GB storage. At this price, who could complain? The same Windows Phone experience at an incredible price. There is one slight issue, as WPDownUnder points out, this device is a 900 band 3G unlocked phone that will be restricted to Virgin and Optus (no Telstra NextG).

We're still expecting the HTC TITAN II to drop in the next few weeks and perhaps in an attempt to clear some stock, AT&T has dropped the behemoth Windows Phone to just one cent with a new contract.

That's pretty amazing for a 4.7" screen device with a 1.5GHz CPU and the best camera yet on a Windows Phone (yeah, we're calling it). The TITAN has been a big success, according to the folks at HTC we spoke with back at CES and we can't argue with that as it has been one of our favorite devices around.

The TITAN though is not being discontinued as far as we know as HTC told us that it will still be sold alongside the TITAN II (which is slightly redesigned, has a 16MP camera and LTE 4G on board), so we think this is more of a sale to push Windows Phone rather than an end-of-life scenario. Either way, it's a great deal.

The Nokia Lumia 710 is on offer at Vodafone UK for £150, accompanied by a 6-month Zune Pass. The Windows Phone was made available on both Vodafone and Three earlier last month for £199 (though Vodafone reportedly dropped the price to £150 soon after). The Lumia 710 packs a 1.4 Ghz processor, 3.7" screen, 5MP camera, 8GB storage and sports a handful of pre-loaded Nokia apps.

Hurry up should the offer intrigue you as it ends on March 31st. Ignore the 3/5 rating as this was left by a single Android-orientated reviewer who complained about the lack of storage for music lovers (Zune Pass / Nokia Music anyone?).

The Canadian carrier TELUS has an interesting deal currently active for the Lumia 800 Windows Phone, which is priced at $49.99 (dropped from $249) when purchased accompanied by a $50 (three year term) plan. The Nokia handset is present in black, cyan and magenta.

The device has been anticipated by those who have been awaiting for the carrier to launch the Windows Phone, but should a contract not be up your street, a no term option is available for $529.99.

We previously took a look at 4Chan Reader when it entered into the Marketplace, which was surprising with the previous submission review trouble other apps of that nature encountered. The app, which would normally set you back just $0.99 (£0.79), has been made available for free until the end of February.

The reasoning behind the temporary change in price? The developer of 4Chan Reader has recently pushed out an update that contained not only bug fixes and improvements, but a massive UI overhaul. Please remember that this app is not safe for work, home, or anywhere in public. You can download 4Chan Reader from the Marketplace.

Should you enjoy Portal on the consoles and PC, then you'll love Portals 2D (by Weesals) on your Windows Phone. Taking an interesting 2D birds-eye route, this indie title feels like a unique game due to the different camera angle from 1st person to the clouds. The concept is exactly the same with cubes, portals, lasers, a portal gun and the requirement of a quick thinking mind.

The most intriguing feature of this Portals 2D is not the superb graphics (vaguely reminiscent of GTA China Town Wars?), but the price - it's available for absolutely nothing until February 7th. You can download Portals 2D from the Marketplace. Note that there are two entries for this app, be sure to download the one we link to.

Just in case $39 was too much at a T-Mobile store for the Nokia Lumia 710, you can head to your local (har har) Microsoft Store and pick up that bad boy for the low-low price of FREE. Of course, they're just not throwing free phones at customers as you do have to commit to a 2-year contract. But hey, that's not a bad deal.

And since the chances of you actually living near a MS store are a bit slim (you can check here though), you can also order by phone or online, making this a pretty good deal to share with others.

We covered the app Ffffound by our own RogueCode a few weeks ago. The app pulls down user created pop-art from the site of the same name, Ffffound.com, but in a really svelte manner--great transitions, minimalist design and the ability to save to your device for use as wallpaper or sharing with others.

The app was recently updated to fix issues with saving and some device memory problems, letting it work fully as it should. It's a nifty little app that even has a Live Tile that shows the latest image, giving your Start screen a little pizzazz.

For $0.99 the app was a great deal, in our opinion, but now for the next week you can pick it up for free--no strings attached. That's a great offer for a very well deigned app, so might as well take advantage while you can.

Check out the video review after the break and grab the app here in the Marketplace.

The other day we covered Costco selling the Lumia 710 (review) for a pretty great price, specifically $0.01 on contract. The fine print also revealed at the time that the "retail price" was $269.99, which is a lot cheaper than the $350 most other places are offering it for.

Now we have an inventory screen shot showing that the 710 will be sold at select Costco brick-n-mortar stores (your guess is as good as ours as to which ones) for that very low price of $269.99. That's a heck of  a deal for an off-contract phone, especially for that Nokia-quality. In addition, you can expect a free carrying case and a car charger.

Downside? Well, besides limited store-availability, you can only get black. And while black is kewl, we prefer the white one ourselves just to be a bit different.  Hopefully if you're in the market for a new phone, you'll be able to find one of these stores offering this deal.

Thanks, Peter M., for the info!
