T-Mobile is looking to kick-start 2012 with a bang, following some interesting deals closing off the year. A New Year sale will be activated on the first weekend of January, starting Friday 6th, through to Sunday 8th. The Windows Phone on sale is the HTC Radar 4G (our review) running Mango. The only catch is that the purchase must be accompanied by a two-year Value Plan contract.

Should you be interested in the handset, after a $50 mail-in rebate, you'll be able to pick one up for just $49.99.

The Venue Pro, Dell's poor first generation Windows Phone, has found itself in trouble being plagued by issues (as well as lagging behind OS updates), been at the front of some good deals, and is tagged as Dell's only contribution to the platform for the foreseeable future. Should you be after the handset which sports a 4.1" AMOLED display, 1Ghz processor, 5MP camera, and a vertical slide-out QWERTY keyboard, you can pick one up for $299 unlocked. If contracts are more your scene, T-Mobile is offering the Venue Pro on a two-year plan for just $.99, not bad.

While it's a solid deal for a Windows Phone that runs Mango smoothly, do note that there's no tethering and the compass is out of service. Be sure to check out our review for more information, and head on over to the source below to take advantage of the deals.

T-Mobile has an awesome sale starting up on December 17th, and ending on the 18th. For just two days, 4G handsets stocked by the carrier will be available for purchase for $0 after a mail-in-rebate. A few Windows Phones are included in this deal, the HTC Radar and HTC HD7. Handsets require a two-year contract (qualifying Value Plan) to be taken out, but for Christmas, a brand new 4G Windows Phone with a packed plan is a perfect present.

Gore Verbinski, best known for directing The Pirates of the Caribbean series of films, has signed a deal between his company Blind Wink Productions and Microsoft. The partnership will see the studio produce exclusive content for Microsoft's platforms - including the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone. The first title to emerge is an Xbox Live Arcade game, which will use Kinect and is set to be released next year.

"Audiences consume content very differently today. As an idea house, we at Blind Wink are looking forward to our partnership with Microsoft. Their various platforms give us access to new methods of distribution, allowing us to extend into emerging markets and connect more directly with the audience."

Founded in 2008 and first production being Rango, we should be able to look forward to some unique and creative content from the studio, going down paths and bringing new games to the platforms.

T-Mobile has the HTC Radar (our review) listed on their website for free, when taking out a two-year contract. Note that this is a web-only deal, so be sure to make the purchase online. Should you be interested, act now as the deal is set to end today. Sporting a 5MP camera, 1Ghz processor, 8GB storage and a 3.8" screen, the Radar is a perfect Mango handset for Christmas.

Should you have the HTC Titan jotted down on your Santa wish list (or simply desire one due to an ending contract), then perhaps you should check out this deal found at Best Buy. The HTC Titan 4G on AT&T is going for nothing at all, all that's required is a new two year contract to be taken out (or an upgrade), starting from just $39.99 for the cheapest plan. Taking the handset without a package will set you back $649.99.

Packing a massive 4.7" screen, the Titan (our review) truly is a beast of a Windows Phone. Powered by a 1.5GHz processor and shipping with 16GB worth of storage, this handset is a perfect choice for anyone who's searching for that extra oomph!

If you wanted the new HTC Radar 4G on T-Mobile (and it is a pretty sweet phone, we have one in our hands as we speak), you'll want to take a look at getting it through Wirefly. They have it for the low-low price of $49.99 for either new service, new line or your upgrade, should you have one waiting.

To put that price in perspective, T-Mobile-direct advertises the device as $99 with a new contract, but alas, it's actually $150 with a $50 mail-in-rebate. We say "boo" to those and would rather just pay $50 direct to Wirefly and call it a day.

We'll have a review up of the Radar 4G in a few days, but so far we're impressed with the device--solid build, beautiful screen and fast. Shame about that 8GB of storage though.

Attention fellow Brits, there's a pretty neat deal that's ongoing with the Nokia Lumia 800 on T-Mobile. You can get the Windows Phone Mango handset for nothing at all, tied to a 24 month contract at £25.54, not bad. What's more is you can get £40 automatic cash back, which brings down the total monthly charge to £23.87 a month.

We've heard of this deal before but now we can see the flyer for itself to verify: if you live near a Microsoft Store and you spend $499 or more, presumably on a new desktop or laptop PC, you can pick up a free Windows Phone, carrier free.

Eligible phones include the discontinued HTC Surround, LG Quantum, HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro. No word if this will extend to cover Generation 2 devices, though we'll keep an eye out for anything. Here's a list of all the Microsoft Stores to see if you live near one.

The UK Dell Swarm for the Venue Pro has finished within 90 minutes of launch. The device was priced at £179.50 (about $285 US), a half price steep drop from the usual £359.00 and a reported 60 units were snapped up in an expected rush.  We saw a similiar price reduction on Dell's U.S. website some months ago.

Featuring a 4.1" AMOLED screen, bottom-sliding QWERTY keyboard and SD card compatibility, it's been a crowd favourite, regardless of the software issues.  It's a Windows Phone that grows on you.

This could be a move by Dell to clear out inventory and get out of the Windows Phone market.  Hopefully, it's a move to clear the stock shelves to make room for a 2nd generation handset from Dell with FF camera and a smarter rear camera? One can only dream.

In what is becoming almost routine (see INQ), another OEM has come out and said that the Google-Motorola deal works out better for Microsoft than Google's Android. This time it was Walter Deppeler, president of Acer's operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa. At the Berlin IFA consumer conference on Friday, he was quoted by Reuters as saying "It was a good gift to Microsoft", that Google "work against some of their clients" and finally that Acer would consider the implications of the deal before committing further to an OS.

Acer, who makes low to mid-range handsets, especially in important emerging markets, has recently started using Android in 2010 and is now actively developing Windows Phone devices (see the W4). While their phones won't compete in the U.S. or Europe, they are expected to be important players in Asian markets in the future. Either way, it's telling to hear OEMs publicly state what is becoming more obvious: this Google-Motorola deal and their continued legal quagmires are not helping to boost OEM confidence in Android.

A few days ago, we ran the story about how Dell's eBay account was selling "limited stock" of carrier unlocked Dell Venue Pros (16GB) compatible with T-Mobile or AT&T for $299. Since then, they've revised "limited stock" to just available.

Now, perhaps due to the popularity of the offer (or they recognize the reduced value), Dell is offering the same deal through their website which was just selling the device for $499 yesterday: 16GB, unlocked with T-Mo or AT&T radios (your choice). This way you can do Dell credit if you want. Initial ship date is tomorrow for the devices.

We're not going to tell you how to spend your money and you can wait for our review as soon as we get ours, but this is still a sweet deal for one of the most unique Windows Phone's out there.

Update: We should also note that new-contract for T-Mobile, you can get the 8GB for just $0.99, 16GB for $49 and the biggy 32GB for $99. That's pretty cheap. AT&T contract phones are out of stock, so it's unknown if they'll follow the same pricing.

HTC 7 Pro at Expansys for £229

It seems as though other websites and companies are offering the same deal as Play.com with regards to the HTC 7 Pro, which is now going for just £229 at Expansys (with free delivery). If you wanted to get your hands on the QWERTY sporting device, now's your chance with more than one location slashing the price.

I wonder if we could have a drum roll implemented which would start as soon as you read an article such as this. This is to be treated as a big fat, yet juicy, rumor. Eldar Murtazin (a well respected leakster - see his rumor for Nokia to use WP7) has just landed one helluva mind blow with the claim that Microsoft and Nokia could look to merge.

According to Eldar, both parties are to sit around a table with jugs of gin and discuss the potential takeover, which is said to be desired ASAP by Nokia. People believed that Skype was a massive deal, wait until they see a concrete seal between the largest software company and the giant in mobile hardware, if it happens. Note that both are currently in a partnership with Nokia to provide hardware for the WP7 ship.

On a more hypothetical note, this would be an incredible advancement for WP7. If anything, Microsoft could begin tailor making their own branded device(s) for the operating system. Not sure how that would play out with other manufacturers still on the WP7 bandwagon who have given Microsoft the momentum they needed with the launch of their platform, not to mention how committed they are.

So what do you think of this rumor, and the possible merge? Check the source below for a translated version of the original article.

Update: And here's a biggy, Mark Squires who's Nokia's Comms Director, has actually responded: "We typically don’t comment on rumors. But we have to say that Eldar’s rumors are getting obviously less accurate with every passing moment." Ba-zing. That is certainly a rebuke and raises the question of why anyone would listen to such a hack like Murtazin in the first place? (Oh right...we can't retract this whole post). Thanks, dropqube, for the heads up

And that's that.

Today, Nokia and Microsoft sealed the deal of the decade (in our eyes, at least) finalizing Nokia's commitment to the Windows Phone platform. Not bad for two months.

The good news is that not only was the deal finalized ahead of schedule, but work by Nokia in cranking out their first Windows Phones is progressing rapidly--however, Microsoft is still projecting "volume device shipments in 2012" but they also note in another blog post "the pressure is on for first delivery in 2011",

Nokia and Microsoft also announced significant progress on the development of the first Nokia products incorporating Windows Phone. With hundreds of personnel already engaged on joint engineering efforts, the companies are collaborating on a portfolio of new Nokia devices. Nokia has also started porting key applications and services to operate on Windows Phone and joint outreach has begun to third party application developers.

Some other highlights from the announcement are not really knew, but at least offer some clarification:

  • Nokia will leverage mapping, navigation, language support and work on cameras; Microsoft gives Nokia Bing, gaming, ecosystem
  • Windows Phone developer registration free for all Nokia developers.
  • Nokia will open a new app store for all their software, including Windows Phone, giving their devs easy access to all of Nokia's customers
  • Nokia will also leverage their operator billing, expanding Microsoft's reach

There is also the bit about Microsoft receiving royalty payments from Nokia starting with their first phones shipped and Nokia receiving payments from Microsoft "measured in the billions of dollars" i.e. things we've heard earlier. While a delay or roadblock was not really expected between the two giants, it's great to see the partnership finally cemented.

Now lets see some phones already. Entire Press Release after the break

o2 is (and has been) running an attractive deal for their Windows Phone 7 offering - the HTC HD 7. Exclusively to the carrier, the device packs a punch specification wise, and is no push over compared to other models available.

Pricing for the phone is £399.99 on PAYG (Pay As You Go) or £50 for a £30/month 18 month contract (device is free for the £35 or higher tariffs). But what is the fuss about? Well, for starters, we have a huge 16GB memory capacity, not currently found on other UK based models. Not only that, the offer states that a purchase of the HTC HD 7 will enable the customer to receive a free Xbox 360 game. While we’re not completely sure what titles are available for the deal, Halo: Reach, Forza 3, Crackdown 2 and Fable 2 are displayed on the page.

Thinking of trying Windows Phone 7 out and want a HTC device, or are you already an o2 customer and are looking to upgrade? This is a golden opportunity for you.

We have witnessed the sheer depth of Microsoft’s budget when it comes to advertising and marketing campaigns, but who would have guessed they would be providing Nokia $1 billion for them to further promote and develop Windows Phone 7? The partnership between the two giants could prove to be what the platform needs to combat Google and Apple with competition.

No telling if this is a permanent deal or just temporary, but AT&T is now heavily discounting the LG Quantum, dropping $399.99 from the retail price making it basically free. Of course you still need that 2-year contract thing to get that price and it looks to be online only (though we're sure you could talk a store into matching it). We've seen third-party retailers offer WP devices for a cent, but not often has AT&T done so directly. (AT&T last dropped prices in early January to $99)

While the Quantum is not the favorite Windows Phone on the market, with some considering its design...less than exciting, the keyboard is pretty top notch and the build quality is just fantastic. Combined with LG's offering of free software in their store, plus great OEM apps (see here, here and here), it's actually a great phone for the text-heavy messenger. (Confession: my Quantum is my default device, there's just something about it that I dig).

Update: Reader RayWP7 lets us know that HTC Surround is also going for $0.01, right here.

In case you've been missing out on all of those deals of late, just in time for "Black Friday" comes a great offer from AT&T: buy any Windows Phone 7 device and get a second one for free.

Of course the usual fine print applies: $15 minimum data plan, $36 activation (which you can usually get waived), 2 year agreement, etc. But hey, for the family or couple who need new phones, seems like a great deal to us. Anyone else get the impression that Microsoft is doing the "Xbox strategy" by eating the cost of sales in an attempt to gain market share?
