Today we've seen how big giant companies can have a sense of humor (Exhibit A: Nokia) and we'll continue that with Microsoft (who have never been above self deprication, see Rivera's famous example). What you see above is a LG GW910 Panther running Windows Phone 7.0. These were seeded out to developers even before Windows Phone went public (remember all of those early sightings?).

What's funny though of course is the lil' message Microsoft had emblazoned on the package for the device, adopting Ballmer's famous sweaty credo which, yes, we'll post after the break in full re-mix form.

Because it never gets old.

Update: Turns out, Mr. Brandon Watson was the culprit behind the idea. Brilliant!

Every now and then we feature apps whose prices are going down for a small promotional period.  Obviously, in general people seem to like free stuff. But how much?

Well, I have an app called FFFFound in the Windows Phone Marketplace, which has been mentioned here on WPCentral a few times.  It's has quite a niche target market, and because of that doesn't have many users.  So before going into numbers, you need to realize that this is an app that not too many people actually want or need.  BUT for the few who are looking for something like this, they love it.  Because the users who have reviewed it have made it quite clear that they love the design, I wanted to get it into more hands.

For this week's Windows Phone developer interview, we're joined by Alan Mendelevich from AdDuplex. While his time isn't focused on app development per se, Mendelevich does an incredible amount of work to help developers on the platform increase their revenue potential and promoting their apps. At the recent WPUG meet up, we viewed an AdDuplex presentation that outlined details surrounding effective use of social media among other promotion means to increase exposure.

Check out the full interview after the break.

Good news for your shutterbugs out there, Aviary (Aviary.com), a photo-editing startup company will be releasing an SDK within the next two months for Windows Phone. The company specializes in image enhancements and providing effects for on-board photo editing on mobile phones. The system is already available on iOS, Android and web applications, so Windows Phone seems like the next logical step.

The company's decision was partially driven by Nokia's focus on photography, especially their use of Carl-Zeiss lenses. According to Paul Murphy, a vice president at Aviary, “At a hardware level they’ve just done everything right".

Interestingly, Paul Murphy is also an ex-Microsoftie and used to work under current Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, so we imagine having some of those connections played a roll too. The SDK will be free to anyone for all Windows Phones but will be first "showcased" on Nokia to show the potential of their software. While the SDK is free, the company brings in revenue by offering more premium features at a cost to developers. Finally, the company has close to 400 partners which they hope to leverage in getting more Windows Phone photo apps created.

Good news all around and we look forward to seeing Aviary tech in future software packages from devs.

Students at the Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications of Larissa Institute of Technology (TEI) in Greece were invited to participate in a Windows Phone app development contest earlier this year. Sponsored by both Microsoft and Nokia, the event saw students compete against one another for the grand prize, which were two Nokia Lumia 800s.

The winners of the contest were as follows:

  • Escape From Heaven ($0.99/79p) is an interesting indie game that puts the player in control of a hedgehog that is attempting to escape from heaven.
  • Ο.Σ.Ε (free - Greek) aids those who desire to use the public transport networks in Greece with live maps of train stations, details and more.

The remaining apps are the work of the runner-ups, who all received a free Windows Phone (HTC or LG) each (note that some of these apps are in Greek).

For more information on the event, apps and winners, head on over to the website (link below). It's worth checking out for the design of the contest website, which makes use of Metro elements. With all the trouble that Greece is in with regards to economics and unemployment levels, it's fantastic to see young aspiring developers produce such fine works.

Here's a very cool (and smart) tool that Nokia have created: a banner generator for your Marketplace apps.

Need a quick way to advertise your app via web banners or perhaps your website? Hop over to Nokia's generator, enter in your App URL and away you go. The system will pull in your app's info and then allow you to customize how the banner looks. You can choose which Nokia Windows Phone to display, which Tiles to show and more.

Cost? Free. Of course, Nokia gets their phone shown off now every time you advertise your app--one hand washes the other, right? Regardless, we think it's a great idea and looks snazzy.

Try it right here: http://snac.nokia.com/2/omt

Now that Nokia's Lumia 710 and 800 have made it to the Czech Republic, Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up to try to spark up some developer interest in them.  In a new contest, they will be awarding Lumia 800s to the first 100 developers who get three apps to the Marketplace and total fifty downloads.  The contest has been running since February 1 and will continue until May 31, or until the 100 phones have been given out.

Early reports are that Nokia sales have been pretty strong since coming to the Czech Republic.  The combined effort by Microsoft and Nokia to market their products to both consumers and developers alike seem to be paying off.  Hopefully, the strategy proves to be successful in other parts of the world as well.

At the recent Windows Phone User Group meet up in London we witnessed a couple of Windows Phone developers showcasing their apps to the audience. As well as this, we had Alan Mendelevich of AdDuplex who came to the event with a developer orientated presentation. The main argument was developers should ensure that effort is poured into not only building the app, but also promoting it around the web (as well as offline).

The 48 slides are packed full of humorous illustrations and useful points for developers of the platform to take note of. While there's no speech to accompany the written detail, it's easy to understand the message surrounding Windows Phone app marketing and monetization.

Head on over to SlideShow to view (and download) the presentation.

We mentioned Visual Studio Achievements for Windows Phone just over a month ago. The pet project by developer Den Delimarsky picks up where Microsoft's Channel 9 left off. In short, these are achievements...but for developers! And now you can track them easily on your Windows Phone, thanks to Den's app.

Nerd alert!

Having said that, the app itself is pretty awesome with the ability to track your achievements as well as sharing and comparing your scores to others for ultimate bragging rights.

Read more on Channel 9's Visual Studio Achievements here and read more at Den's blog over yonder.

Grab the free app here and now in the Marketplace.

Some time ago Microsoft launched a Windows Phone App Garage tour to select cities across the U.S. to bring developers together to learn more about the Windows Phone operating system and help them with their development efforts. It was also a great networking resource for the development community.

In the same spirit as the original Garage events, a group of local developers in the Birmingham area will be holding a Windows Phone Garage event on February 18th. The local community event will be a free, all day event to help developers but in a less formal manner.

There is no set agenda and the local Windows Phone experts will provide impromptu assistance as requested throughout the day.   You'll need to register for the event in advance and bring a notebook computer to the event. Lunch and a light breakfast will provided.

If you're interested in attending, you can find all the fine details and registration information here at the Birmingham Windows Phone Garage website.

Thanks, Glen, for the tip!

We previously covered the Windows Phone team preparing to launch a new advertising campaign for developers on the platform, titled "Your App Here". The team has partnered with Nokia to bring a more effective offer. Developers can submit their apps and should they be selected the apps will be showcased in Windows Phone and Nokia advertisement campaigns. These include banner ads, placement in Windows Phone Marketplace, public relations press outreach events, social activities, and more.

There were three listed campaigns (up until February), but the submission dates have since past. Fear not as more dates have been published on the website (campaign:submission close date):

  • March Campaign: January 31
  • April Campaign: February 29
  • May Campaign: March 31
  • June Campaign: April 30

Head on over to the advertising campaign website to enter your apps for approval (U.S. AppHub accounts/apps only; You just need an AppHub account and an app for the US market). Selections are based on the following criteria:

  • Newly published Windows 7.5 apps developed for the US Market
  • Originality & Innovation
  • Consumer Friendliness
  • Implementation of Key Windows Phone Features such as Live Tiles, Fast Apps Switching or App Connect

If you haven't checked it out already, then you should head over to our developer forum. It is one of the newer sections in the growth of the forums. And it's not just for developers!

The default Metro look on Windows Phone 7 is certainly beautiful, but is not for everyone. So if you're looking to change the look of your device, then go take a look through all the different themes that our users have created, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Next up, would you like to beta test some applications/games? You will not need an unlocked phone, and it's a good chance to try out new products before the rest of the world. Also, if you are a developer why not request some testers in the forum. It always helps getting a second pair of eyes on your work.

Then, for you more adventurous individuals, we have the Software Development and Hacking section where you can get help with a potential problem with Zune/Chevron or maybe just post screen captures of your WP7.

Finally, if you need help getting started with WP7 dev or want to take advantage of a great offer for free app translation to Swedish then go on over to the developer section.

Windows Phone Dashboard Beta [Developers]

As a developer I value feedback very highly. Every morning I habitually check for new reviews on my apps to see if there are any suggestions or complaints. I have a big whiteboard with a list of to-do's for each of my apps, and I add their feedback onto that. If you have anything in the Windows Phone Marketplace, I suggest you do the same, or find something similar that works for you - because there is no better way to not make money than to ignore the very people that should be paying you.

The Fast Track to the Mobile App contest was recently held by Core77 allowing aspiring mobile app designers to create mockups of their ideas and submit them. In December of last year the winners were announced and told to go forth and develop! The winners and finalists were given the choice to either develop their own app or choose from a list of developer bio's provided by Core77.

The 5 winners were each given the following prizes to kick-start their development:

  • Free Windows Phones
  • XBox 360 (with Kinect)
  • 1-year App-Hub subscriptions
• App Development Deal (with revenue sharing options) to bring your design to life

A month later and they have posted an update detailing the progress of two of the winners and the processes that they have gone through to get where they are.

It remains to be seen what the other 3 winners have been up to, but for now, Social Mints and Cash Hound look quite interesting.

Good news for devs out there and a sign that Windows Phone is gaining traction. WPDevCon, a three day conference taking place in San Francisco on October 22-24, was just announced and is being sponsored by BZ Media LLC, which

"...publishes SD Times, the leading magazine for the software development industry. BZ Media also produces AnDevCon: The Android Development Conference; iPhone/iPad DevCon, an independent conference focused on Apple’s mobile platforms; and SPTechCon: The SharePoint Technology Conference."

The conference is the first of its kind, an event 100% focused on Windows Phone development that is independent of Microsoft. The event itself is open to all developers of all skill ranges and will have three areas of focus. From the press briefing:

  • WP Essentials: These technical classes and workshops are for all Windows Phone developers, and cover all programming topics.
  • WP Enterprise: These technical sessions cover topics specific to building and managing apps for employees, business customers and partners, such as back-end integration with corporate applications and the Cloud.
  • WP Marketing: These business-oriented sessions cover everything you need to know about the Windows Phone marketplace, including app marketing and distribution.

Currently, the conference organizers are looking for speakers and other sponsors. For more information, head to their website: WPDevCon. This news helps demonstrate that the platform is finally growing beyond just Microsoft and hopefully it will be well attended with good organization. Speaking of, we're pretty sure we'll be there to cover it, maybe with a Rafael Rivera in tow for his technical expertise.

If you happen to be in the UK and near London on January 31st then this might just interest you. The Windows Phone User Group (an independent group dedicated to helping developers interested in the Windows Phone platform) are having another monthly meeting just next to Liverpool Street station.

This month they have Alan Mendelvich of AdDuplex providing a guide to monetizing apps on the Windows Phone platform, as well as demonstrations, socializing and beer. This all sounds excellent to me so I've decided to join this month's meeting as well, if you want to come along an say hi, you can register for free at the source link.

This is an interesting infographic posted over on the Windows Phone Developer Blog, which shows data that was accumulated in 2011. While it's aimed at developers, we thought everyone would like to take a peak at how far we've come together. Be sure to click on the infographic to enlarge the size, which can be found after the break.

Microsoft is offering the first 500 AppHub developers to publish a Windows Phone app to the Marketplace a free Nokia Lumia 800 handset, to really set the ball rolling for 2012. Keeping the Lumia family fire at a heated blaze, the Windows Phone team will be handing out the 800s to developers who submit a completely new app that fits in with the following requirements:

  • Target Windows Phone 7.5;
  • Work as described;
  • Include Fast App Switching; and
  • Conform to Metro guidelines.
  • You must be a U.S. registered member of App Hub.

The app must have a release date that is, or between, January 1, 2012 and by February 10, 2012 (by 11:59 PM PST). Once the app has been submitted, developers can then send the following form in an email to WPNewYear@microsoft.com:

Name (matches App Hub account):
Mailing Address (where device will be shipped-not used by Microsoft for any other purpose):
App Hub Publisher/ISV ID #:
Application ID:
Marketplace deep link:
Application publication date:
Uses Fast app switching (yes or no):
Conforms to Metro guidelines (yes or no):

Sounds good, right? Unfortunately, this offer is only on the table for U.S. residents and only one entry per AppHub ID is allowed. Developers, get creative, and best of luck to be one of the lucky 500.
