Handyscan updated to version 3.0

For those not familiar, HandyScan is an application for your Windows Phone that allows you to take a picture of a document, convert it to .PDF format, and share it through email.  We reviewed Handyscan way back when and found it to be a very nice document scanner for your Windows Phone.

The app was recently updated to bring some new features into the mix. Features that only add to the quality of this app.  You have a new, flexible cropping tool with perspective/skew correction, more streamlined process for sending documents and Dropbox support.

You also have a few performance tweaks such as an increased connection time out when sending an email over slow connections, disabling the phone's sleep function while sending or uploading files to Dropbox and matching the app's tile icon to your phone's theme color.

There is a free trial for Handyscan available and the full version runs $2.99. You also have a free version of HandyScan that lacks .PDF conversion (documents are saved as .JPG files). You can find the full version of Handyscan here and the free version here (both links opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Perfect Scan has been on the Windows Phone Marketplace since late June and the developers have been quit busy with the updates. We've seen an increase in email size (bumped to 20mb) and support for Dropbox and Google Documents.

The most recent updates have fixed bugs and glitches associated with email export and Dropbox crashes for non-US regional settings.

Sending a scanned document to either source is easy. Just swipe over to the DropBox or Google Doc page in the Export Menu, enter your email/password and done.  We liked Perfect Scan (here's our review) and adding Dropbox and Google Docs options to the export menu only improves things.

There is a trial version available for Perfect Scan to let you try before buying and the full version is running $2.99. You can find Perfect Scan here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

There's really not much to Perfect Scan but what's there works nicely. To read more on Perfect Scan, slide on past the break.

DocMe - Review

Document scanners can be a useful utility for your Windows Phone. We've already looked at HandyScan and now turn our sites towards DocMe. DocMe is a simple, straightforward document scanner developed by Amberlabs.

As with similar applications, DocMe uses your Windows Phone camera to capture images of documents and converts them into various file types. Additional integration with your Windows Phone camera includes DocMe being added to your phone's Share Menu. This allows you to take advantage of the camera's quick picture and then worry about uploading the image for conversion.

To see how well DocMe performed, just ease on past the break.

Handyscan (Lite) now available

JDB Pocketware introduced Handyscan some time ago for Windows Phone 7. Handyscan is a personal document scanner for your Windows Phone that uses your phone's camera to scan and save documents. Handyscan is a very good choice for those looking for a document scanner but some saw it a little on the pricey side.  For those who saw price as an issue, a solution has become available.

JDB Pocketware has now released Handyscan (Lite), a free version of the original document scanner. The key features for the lite version aren't much different than the pay version and include:

  • Automatic optimization of scanned images
  • Zoom in/out capabilities
  • Align and crop scanned document
  • Add text to document (fill in forms)
  • Scan multiple pages per document and save them as one file

The features the Lite version lack includes:

  • Choosing the format you can email documents in (JPEG or PDF)
  • Choosing the size and quality of scanned results you send out

If you need a document scanner for your Windows Phone and are hesitant because of the cost, Handyscan Lite may be the solution you're looking for. You can get your free copy of Handyscan Lite here (opens your Zune desktop) at the Marketplace.

Review: PDF Scanner

PDF Scanner by Melon Mobile utilizes your Windows Phone camera to create .PDF documents. The $7.99 application is presented in a very straightforward manner and captures rather decent .PDF files.

Once launched, the choices presented are simple. In pressing scan, you launch your Windows Phone's camera to capture the image. Once you've lined up your shot with the camera simply hit the shutter button. PDF Scanner will then give you a preview of the image and if you need to add additional pages to the file, tap "scan" and capture the additional images.

When your file is complete, pull up the Menu to "save as" or send the file via email.

In testing PDF Scanner, operation is simple and quality is decent. I experienced no bugs, glitches or crashes with the application.

Why .PDF files over .JPEG files?  PDF scanning does allow you to capture multiple images in one file making it easier to email one, multiple page .PDF than multiple .JPEG files.  File size maybe?  Some .PDF files are smaller than .JPEG, again making it easier to send.  But when you get into multiple page files, the .PDF size is the larger.

Regardless of the reason, if you're looking for a .PDF scanner for your Windows Phone, PDF Scanner is available over at the WMExperts' Software Store. There is a 7 day trail version that will allow you to try before you buy. Follow the break to see a comparison of PDF Scanner's image quality compared to a .JPEG image.
