ESPN Goals has been bumped to version 2.2 and is now available on Windows Phone 8 hardware. The app was originally released back in 2011 and has been updated since for Windows Phone 7. Those who have made the leap to the latest hardware have not been able to use the app, but fortunately an update wasn't far off.

The ESPN Fantasy Football 2012 app has vanished from the Windows Phone Store and those who have been using the app have seen their teams vanish as well. The app itself has disappeared from the Nokia Collection as well but if you follow this link, you can still find the app's listing.

Unfortunately, the Nokia exclusive is noted (for both Windows Phone 7 and 8) as not being available for your device from your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone.  From the online store, the app is simply listed as "not available online" likely due to the Nokia exclusivity.

While the big news today was definitely the official launch of Windows Phone 8, Nokia was able to slide in an update to their ESPN app over the weekend.  The update mainly deals with increasing how you can be notified on scoring and news updates through the Live tile and toast notifications.

The update adds the ability to save and pin your favorite teams and sports to your Windows Phone Start Screen, customize the Live Tile score updates and you can now receive toast notifications for news and score updates.

A new image has leaked out tonight revealing for the first time Window Phone 8's new "live" lockscreen wallpaper feature. We have mentioned live lockscreen wallpapers before, specifically when the Windows Phone 8 SDK leaked over the summertime (and we told you about them even before then). The feature is not quite as “live” as Android where things are actually moving around, wasting your battery. Instead, this is truly useful.

The image above, received by the site Nokia Innovation, shows three examples of this Live locksreen wallpaper: Bing, ESPN and USA Today. The former will refresh the lockscreen every day with Bing’s latest background, ESPN can show you sports scores presumably of your favorite team and USA Today highlights news via tile images.

The Windows Phone ESPN Radio app was promoted alongside other platform solutions in a recent Mike & Mike programme episode. The app itself launched on the platform last month for all Windows Phones to download and enjoy, and it's good to see it get recognised on a network programme.

The free app will let you manage multiple fantasy football teams, check in on player performance and view news and video highlights from ESPN.

ESPN FFL 2012 also taps into FantasyCast Live Scoring that will deliver real time player and matchup scoring to your Windows Phone.

The fantasy football app will be an exclusive for the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone lineup and should be live on the Marketplace in the next day or two.

ESPN Fantasy Football allows you to manage your fantasy teams and monitor player performance from multiple teams and leagues. You have the capability of following teams on game day with real-time FantasyCast scores and news.

Currently for ESPN football/soccer fans there is the official ESPNSoccernet app that was launched on July 2nd. The app is an extension of Soccernet.com, which ESPN owns but the branding was always confusing. The Windows Phone app has received mediocre reviews with some people noting it still felt like a beta.

Now, ESPN seems to be rebranding their efforts by re-launching Soccernet.com as ESPNFC.com. Going to the former site will now redirect you to the new address and site redesign. Not only that, the new site will feature many more features than the previous Socceernet.com offering and it should keep fellow footballers happy...

We’re not too sure what to make of this but here’s the deal: there’s a seemingly very official ESPN Radio app now in the Windows Phone Marketplace and you can download it to any Windows Phone not just a Nokia.

We mention that because it was only Friday that Nokia came out with the news that an ESPN Radio app should be in the Nokia Marketplace within the next day or two. Well, here we are two days later and there is a very nice ESPN Radio app but it will also load on any Windows Phone. Accident? On purpose? Does Nokia have a ‘special edition’ of the app coming out very soon too? We just don’t know…

If you're into ESPN's fantasy football, you will be pleased to hear that the ESPN Fantasy Football app is headed to the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Not much is known on the details but the app will feature fantasy team management, live scoring, news from the NFL, tweets from fantasy experts, and messaging boards.

This will be the first year ESPN's Fantasy Football app will be offered for Windows Phone and expected release is mid-August. Once we spot the app in the Marketplace, we'll let you know.

ESPNcricinfo is a Windows Phone sports app to keep you up to date on all the cricket action going on around the world. Cricket the game, not cricket as in Jiminy Cricket.

ESPNcricinfo covers international matches, ICC tournaments and major domestic leagues including English county championships, Indian Premier League and Champions League. The app is laid out nicely, as with any ESPN app, with pages covering match scores, news, magazine articles, and a tile menu that pulls up stats, videos, settings, rankings and more.

Other features for ESPNcricinfo include:

  • Live game coverage that includes commentary, scores, match graphics, player profiles, and sideline reports
  • "Lean Back" mode for full-screen viewing that allows you to lean back and enjoy the match
  • Live tile support to pin games to your Start Screen
  • Push notifications for instant alerts for wickets, batsman milestones, and score updates..

While the game of cricket isn't very prominent in my neck of the woods, I can see ESPNcricinfo being a handy app to have for those who follow the game. ESPNcricinfo is a free app for your Windows Phone and you can snatch it up here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, bilzkh, for the tip!

Although Nokia's ESPN app available in the Nokia Collection gets some mixed reviews partially because it relies on Internet Explorer for some advanced stats, overall fans seem to like the co-branded offering.

One feature that was missing however was a Live Tile for sports score updates and now that has been addressed with version 2.1. The new update came out in the last 24-hours and users seem to be quite happy so far with the ability to just glance-and-go with the app on their Start screen.

No other tweaks or fixes are known with version 2.1 but needless to say, if you follow sports, like ESPN and love your Lumia than you'll want to grab this app ASAP. Pick it up here in the Windows Phone Marketplace but only if you're on Nokia.

Windows Phone App Review: Nokia's ESPN App

Nokia will be offering several exclusive apps for their Lumia Windows Phone lineup. One such app is the ESPN App. We mentioned it in the Lumia 710 review and now we'll take a closer look at things.

The app is broken down into three panoramic pages that cover scores, videos, news and ESPN social feeds for all your favorite sports leagues. A fifth page is present to allow you switch between sports leagues and covers the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, NCAA Basketball and Football, Soccer, Formula 1, Cricket and Rugby.

Today, Nokia announced not only the Lumia 900 but also some exclusive apps. While Nokia Drive is well known, the ESPN and CNN apps are much more new and less detailed in media coverage.

Perhaps not surprisingly, both apps are quite nice. Well designed, Metro-influenced and delivering what looks to be considerable content, the apps look to increase the value of the phone. And while we don't think an "exclusive" ESPN and CNN app suite will convert many folks, as news junkies ourselves, we're more than happy to have it on board. Furthermore, the CNN iReport feature (being able to natively use the phone to submit reports) is certainly a novel idea.

Anyways, enjoy this quick look at these two new apps.

Slacker Radio recently announced a new partnership with ESPN Audio that will bring live streaming of major professional and collegiate sporting events to your Windows Phone. The new channel kicks off tonight with the BCS College Football Championship between LSU and Alabama.

Future live programming will be available to Slacker Radio Plus and Premium subscribers ($3.99 and $9.99 a month respectively). The interactive ESPN Radio Station on Slacker will remain free and available to all listeners.

Jonathan Sasse, Senior Vice President of Marketing, comments,

“This new feature is yet another example of how Slacker is combining the best elements of traditional radio with our listeners’ demand for personalization of music, news, sports and more.”

Slacker Radio covers over 150 program and music stations ranging from ABC News to hip hop to country to rock. Slacker Radio (here's our review from way back when) is a free app for your Windows Phone. Again, Plus and Premium services will cost you extra and can be bill directly to your wireless provider (looks like US Carriers only).

You can download your copy of Slacker Radio here at the Windows Phone Marketplace and catch Slacker's full presser after the break.

We mentioned a few days ago about ESPN Goals making its way to the UK Marketplace. That day has arrived and you can now grab it to begin the new football season. Though we haven't tried the app yet ourselves, from what we've heard, it's pretty nice. From the app description:

"The complete Barclays Premier League video App! This season football fans can watch video clips of all the goals* from every Barclays Premier League match – completely free on the ESPN Goals app. The ultimate Barclays Premier league app includes live scores, video highlights and clips of every goal, for all 380 games – within just minutes of it taking place*."

  • The essential football app for fans of the Barclays Premier League will feature:
  • Video of goals and match action from every Barclays Premier League match all season long
  • Live scores and match stats
  • Fixtures and results from around the league
  • Additional video including match previews and weekend round-ups
  • Video alerts: Alerts for goal videos, match highlight clips and Weekend roundup clips
  • In-match Clips

Sounds fairly comprehensive to us and the app looks well designed as you can see from above. If its something you think you'll want to pick up, you can get it for free here in the Marketplace. [Not available in the US]

Thanks, Damien H. and Dale B., for the tip!

In case you were yearning for some app updates of popular apps, you're in luck tonight as we have at last count four of 'em:

We're just kind of excited that 4th & Mayor has finally beat our FourSquare in the version number war those two have been waging. We also like the USA Today fix as that app keeps getting better and better and we're sure you ESPN fans will like the new Score Center.

And sorry, too many links for us to list. Just look 'em up in the Marketplace, we're tired ;-) Thanks, Lawrence F.& Shipwreck, for the heads up!

ESPN Goals app coming to WP7

Fan of football or what we like to call soccer? Then you may be excited about ESPN's Goals app coming soon to Windows Phone 7 (as well as every other mobile OS). From the app description:

"This season football fans can watch video clips of all the goals* from every Barclays Premier League match – completely free on the ESPN Goals app. The ultimate Barclays Premier league app includes live scores, video highlights and clips of every goal, for all 380 games – within just minutes of it taking place."

  • The essential football app for fans of the Barclays Premier League will feature:
  • Video of goals and match action from every Barclays Premier League match all season long
  • Live scores and match stats
  • Fixtures and results from around the league
  • Additional video including match previews and weekend round-ups
  • Video alerts: Alerts for goal videos, match highlight clips and Weekend roundup clips.

We're not too familiar with any of that but we're going to guess that some of our UK friends will enjoy getting this as soon as it hits. The service which we're told normally goes £30 but will free for the season, which seems like a good deal no matter where you're from. Might as well pick up Pro Evolution Soccer while you're at it.

ESPN ScoreCenter - Review

Growing up, ABC's Wide World of Sports was the place to be for sports programming. How did the saying go? "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." Today, most will agree that ESPN is the leading name in sports programming, news and information.  Okay...so how does all this tie into Windows Phone 7? Easy.

ESPN recently released their first Windows Phone 7 application, ScoreCenter, that brings the resources of ESPN to your Windows Phone.  It's a clean, well presented application that will keep you up to date on the latest sports news and allow you to follow your favorite sports and teams. Move on past the break to see how well the ESPN ScoreCenter performed and how it measures up against another Windows Phone sports app, ScoreMobile.
