DEAL OF THE WEEK: Save 70% on the DICOTA Hard Cover for Nokia Lumia 900!

europe

The Lumia 900 was a popular Windows Phone and still proves to be a thorn in the back Windows Phone 8 when we're looking at the usage margin between version 7.x and 8. The Nokia device has been taken on a backpacking tour around Europe. Windows Phone Central reader Matthew Cosentino is originally from Melbourne, Australia but has uprooted his life by quiting his job, selling his business and decided to move beyond the border. The past 8 months has seen the Windows Phone owner travel across Europe, focusing more on the Eastern side.

We are seeing some indication that Microsoft's Surface tablet will be heading to Europe. If you look at Microsoft's product pages for FranceItaly , the United KingdomGermany and other European Countries, the Surface is now listed.

We know that the Surface will only be available through the Microsoft's Stores. Stores, at least the brick and mortar variety, that don't exist outside the U.S. which makes the listing a bit of a puzzle.

Nokia announces pricing for both new Lumias

Nokia has unveiled today availability and pricing for both of its new Windows Phones in a handful of markets. The Lumia 820, as well as the Lumia 920, will be heading to countries throughout Europe and beyond. We've long awaited confirmation on where the new hardware will be heading, not to mention how much it'll cost consumers to invest in.

Another day, another exclusive app from Nokia available to all Lumia owners. Today, the Finnish company released Goal.com 2012 Finals. The app is a must have for those who watch soccer...errr...football as it will deliver "breaking news, exclusive interviews, video clips, team profiles, player profiles and 'Road to Euro 2012' which looks back at how each nation qualified for the tournament".

The app has multiple Live Tile support as you can pin your team to your Start screen with updates reflected on the tile (under Settings). It can even remind you when a match is about to start which seems extremely convenient to us.

Overall, the app is smooth and nicely laid out and while we not huge football fans here in the States we can see many of our European friends being thrilled with another great Nokia release.

Samsung only recently announced the Omnia M budget phone for Europe last week, and now we've got hold of a price tag for the smartphone. Italian store ePrice has listed the Omnia M for €294.99, and is targeting the Lumia 610 but Nokia has been able to bring down the prices of their lower-end Windows Phones substantially.

The Omnia M, to refresh the early waking cogs on this Monday morning, sports a 1GHz  CPU with a 4" Super AMOLED screen and 4GB of storage on board. It features HSPA at 7.2MBps. Still no word on availability as-of-yet, but we're sure more details will come to light soon. The device is slated for a European release.

We've been hearing rumblings of a Nokia Lumia 910 recently--basically a Lumia 900 but with a 12.1MP camera instead of the 8MP on the AT&T version. That's not too shabby if true, especially for our European friends who are rumored to be getting the updated version by mid year.

Now we have the Lumia 910 showing up on a Typhone.NL a Dutch retail site for smartphones. The phone is clearly marked as the 910 and low and behold even has a matching 12MP camera to match those rumored specs. Could be coincidence, could be a retail site drumming up some hits or it could very well be the first solid evidence that this bad boy is coming sooner than later. Everything else is there too: 16GB of storage, front facing camera, HSDPA (21 Mb/s) and that 4.3" screen, of course.

In fact, dare we we say we're expecting Nokia to show of the Lumia 910 next month in Barcelona? They're not going to just re-hash a 900 release are they? We think not...

Nokia has announced on Facebook that the Lumia 800 will be available on Vodafone in Ireland on February 1st, which we touched on last week. What's more is that according to users who visited the Facebook page, they noticed the manufacturer stating that the Lumia 900 (the recently announced U.S. LTE Windows Phone) will be coming to Europe in Q2 2012. See the below quote:

"The Nokia Lumia 900 will launch across Europe including Ireland in Q.2 of 2012. We cannot confirm whether Vodafone will stock it or not at this point. Hope that answers your questions guys?!"

So that will at least give us hope of the high end handset coming to Europe.

We previously touched on ZTE handsets heading for Europe (and being the white label Windows Phone in France), and now it seems as though the ZTE Tania is ready for pre-order at Clove UK. The low-range handset is a fairly cheap option for those who don't require top specifications. The Tania will run a smooth experience as any other Windows Phone sporting a 1Ghz processor, but comes with limiting 4GB worth of storage. Then again, with a Zune subscription, storage wouldn't be a huge issue.

Other information on the device includes a 4.3" screen, 512MB RAM, 5MP camera (no FFC). You can pre-order your own at Clove UK for £249.99 (including VAT) unlocked.

We've covered Turn-By-Turn before and recently reviewed their off-line mapping solution for the United States. The (relatively) more affordable navigation app was the first to offer regional and local downloading of offline data, which makes the app a bit faster, saves on precious battery life and uses no-data saving some money.

The catalog of offerings has expand greatly to many other countries and regions, as can be seen below. And now one of the more difficult areas has finally received its own custom maps: Australia. We've heard about folks in this region having a difficult time finding a GPS navigation app for Windows Phone, so they should be pretty excited. However, it comes at a cost: $40.99 for the app and maps.

That's certainly on the high end, though we imagine the cost is largely dictated the licensing fees that developer GPS Tuner needs to pay NAVTEQ to have access. But hey, at least you have an option now.

Likewise, in case you're a big Europe traveler, you can now just buy access to all of Europe's maps instead of country by country. That too will set you back some cash, about $50.99 to be exact, but at least you'll have everything you ever need right there on your phone.

Earlier this year, we reported that the Chinese Windows Phone manufacturer ZTE would bring Mango phones to Europe during Q3 of this year. Apparently, this has been pushed back slightly to the fourth quarter of this year.

The ZTE Windows Phone handset, Tania, will sport a 4.3", 480x800 WVGA TFT screen, 512mb RAM, 4gb of memory, 5mp rear camera, and will measure 10.5mm thin. Reports indicate that pricing will be at 2,000 yuan ($223 Euro/$314 US) but we're not sure how this will transfer to the European carriers.

No specific release date was indicated but if the fourth quarter holds true, and already being a month into the quarter, Europe should see the Tania hit the shelves soon.

Groupon hits v2.5 and gets deal in Europe now

For those looking to get into Groupon, the popular deal finder, but had a little thing like the Atlantic Ocean preventing them from using it, we're hearing that version 2.5 adds support for Europe.

We saw in v2.0 Mango support added with a more robust Live Tile and better deal alerts. We also heard some users had bugs and issues with that one as well, something we hope v2.5 will go a long way in addressing. Plus with this Europe addition, the service can greatly expand as users take more advantage of the app.

Grab Groupon here in the Marketplace. Let us know if it's working for you and what country in comments! Thanks, deeper2k, for the heads up!

HTC Radar available October 1st?

Phones 4u, a U.K. website, is reporting to have an inside track or lead on getting the new HTC Radar. A lead that is expected to land the Windows Phone on their shelves on October 1, 2011.

While most of the press release from Phones 4u deals with an Android release, Scott Hooton, Trading Director at Phones 4u did share this tid bit.

"Our customers want the very best and latest in mobile technology, and so its important that we’re able to offer them only the very best smartphone range, the very latest technology and value for money. Our ongoing and successful working relationship with HTC means we’ve been able to add even more great smartphone exclusives to our widest ever range of exclusive white devices we’ll be offering across contract and prepay this quarter.."

According to the press release, as a result of their successful relationship with HTC, the Radar will be a hero product for Phones 4u in store from 1st October. Pricing is reported as "free from 26 pounds a month on a choice of networks".

Granted this is a European release but you've got to hope that the sooner Europe gets these new Windows Phones, the sooner the U.S. market will.  You can read the full press release after the break.  The Radar information is towards the bottom.

HTC Titan shows up for pre-orders

The HTC Titan has popped up on the buymobilephones.net website for pre-order. The 4.7" Windows Tablet...err...Phone is up for pre-order on T-Mobile (Europe), O2 and Vodafone.

Package deals have the Mango phone ranging in price from FREE to 219.99 pounds (about $347 US dollars). While we'd love to see an availability day, the best the website offers is "Stock due soon".

Earlier this week AT&T announced they would be adding the HTC Titan to their Windows Phone line-up and hopefully, "Stock due soon" or similar will be showing up on AT&T's website in the near future.  Better yet, I wonder if anyone will be offering it for free here in the States?

Thanks goes out to alexb8 for tipping us via our Twitter page @WPCentral

European Parliament members are up in arms after a recent admission by Microsoft that they may be required by the Patriot Act to secretly give U.S. authorities access to European data stored in Microsoft's cloud.  The controversy stems from the EU's Data Protection Directive, which dictates that companies must notify users if/when their data is handed over to another party.  If Microsoft is forced to follow Patriot Act guidelines, then that would mean the U.S. law would trump European law.  Some parliamentarians have taken up the cause to prevent that from happening.

Sophia In't Veld, a member of the Parliament's civil liberties committee, urged her colleagues to consider the matter:

"Does the Commission consider that the U.S. Patriot Act thus effectively overrules the E.U. Directive on Data Protection? What will the Commission do to remedy this situation, and ensure that E.U. data protection rules can be effectively enforced and that third country legislation does not take precedence over E.U. legislation?"

Currently, the Safe Harbor act, which allows companies like Microsoft to transfer data from European storage facilities guarantees users reasonable security and enforcement.  However, if the Patriot Act is allowed supersede that, then it renders that guarantee useless.  Theo Bosboom, IT lawyer with Dirkzager Lawyers, had this to say:

"I'm afraid that Safe Harbor has very little value anymore, since it came out that it might be possible that U.S. companies that offer to keep data in a European cloud are still obliged to allow the U.S. government access to these data on basis of the Patriot Act..."

The struggle for data protection extends beyond the issue of sovereignty of state.  Should the matter remain as is, it opens the floodgates for other companies' data to be secretly put in the hands of U.S. officials.  Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. could all be affected.  European Parliament members have taken up the cause for their constituents, but until it is fully resolved, Bosboom says that, "Europeans would be better to keep their data in Europe. If a European contract partner for a European cloud solution, offers the guarantee that data stays within the European Union, that is without a doubt the best choice, legally."

At this year's Mobile Telecompaper conference Victor Saeijs, Vice President of Nokia Europe, stated to attendees that Nokia plan to launch their first Windows Phone 7 handset in six European countries. The countries named are France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK. Not to mention Russia is a possibility too.

Victor also said that Netherlands is especially included in the line up due to the importance of the smartphone market there, which counts for 80% while only 20% are dumbphones. He went onto mention that they're still looking at a Q4 release and he had in his possession a prototype of their first WP7 handset which he carries around with him. Unfortunately he's not allowed to whip it out and show the world.

It's coming, can you feel it in the air too?

After what seems like countless delays, UK customers will finally be able to order them starting tomorrow, March 1.  Pricing will be £382.50 for just the device, not including VAT and shipping.  Between the long, dragged out release and the history of performance issues, demand will hopefully still be strong. 4.1-inch screen and vertical slide-out QWERTY keyboard make it crowd favorite.

Order it here at Dell.

Word has it that the LG Quantum (aka Optimus 7Q) will not be heading across the pond to Europe.  According to Pocket-Lint, James Choi, marketing strategy and planning team director for LG Electronics Global, told them, “Unfortunately, the Quantum will not make it to Europe. It’s an exclusive handset for AT&T in America."  He did not elaborate much, simply attributing the move an "internal issue."

With the further delay of Dell's Venue Pro, It leaves our European WP7 counterparts QWERTY-less, with nothing more than hopes that the HTC 7 Pro manages to find its way over there in the near future.
