event

This year's HACKED event, which is a free-to-attend weekend of intense learning, building and sharing of cool stuff (that's what the website says) has sold out on tickets. Fear not though as the organisers plan to release more batches through June. Whether you're an expert, novice or a developer or designer, everyone is invited to take part (should you manage to get a place, of course).

Developers have a hard time getting word out about their work, especially since the platform is still relatively young. Here in the UK we have the Windows Phone User Group, headed up by Matt Lacey (@mrlacey). The monthly meetings enable developers to showcase their apps and / or work in all areas of Windows Phone. We tag along each time to offer more support for developers and to see what's new in the community.

It's a perfect opportunity to get involved and also to meet ourselves for some coverage on this very website. This coming Monday (May 20th), the group is heading to Nokia's new offices in Paddington, London. We encourage all developers to register, come along and demonstrate their work to the audience. As an incentive, there's a special prize on offer too for the best app. Who doesn't want free promotion these days?

Nokia has a number of events lined up for the month of May, including a global announcement tomorrow in New Delhi, India. The company has published a new post on its official blog to detail webcast times for those unable to attend. What are we expecting to see from the company? We'll put some money down on new Asha products to follow the recently announced Asha 210 or even a low-end Lumia Windows Phone.

Nokia will be showcasing the next chapter of music discovery in Canada on May 15th. This follows the 14th event in London, where it's believed the company will be unveiling its next Windows Phone. Invitations have been sent out for an event in Toronto where an "important announcement" will be made.

Nokia has sent out invites for an international media event in New Delhi on May 9th. The invite (as shown below) states that it's time to shift gears, but fails to provide any details on what we can expect to see announced. This event also precedes the London May 14th party where we expect to see some international goodies and more.

The De La Salle University in the Philippines is taking part in a HackerCup, which will be taking place at the Microsoft Philippines Office on March 15-16th. The competition is set to promote Windows Phone by encouraging Science & Technology students with ambitious ideas to craft apps in teams of up to four participants. Nokia will be present, sponsoring the event (with Microsoft and Globe Labs) with prizes and more.

Walk into any mobile phone shop anywhere and you’ll be greeted with row after row of rectangle shaped devices. How on earth does one choose which phone to buy when faced with this veritable sea of similar looking handsets? Nokia have done good work with their promotion of their Lumia range, often having dedicated displays to highlight the devices in stores but this alone does not sell devices.

As Windows Phone does break away from the standard looking icon-based user interface and offer something new, there is a need to tell its story. We checked in to the ‘Meet Windows Phone’ event yesterday evening to see what Microsoft and O2 are doing to engage the man and woman on the street.

Nokia and Deadmau5 came together once again in the name of Lumia and produced an event of lights and magic for many who managed to attend the action in London on Wednesday evening. A light show was hosted, as well as an aftermath concert at Electric Brixton, which shared a live stream of the London square with those who were watching online.

So we've seen how the Lumia 920 holds up when attached to the front of a Land Rover, or at live concerts, but what's the quality like when you're (like many) recording while grooving to the beat? We decided to head on down to the Deadmau5 event in Brixton, London last night to see how our Lumia 920s would perform in low light, with high volume levels and an obscene amount of movement.

Nokia's Deadmau5 event has opened up to the public, with tickets available for everyone to grab while they still last. We're expecting a large show with the Canadian artist blowing the roof off with intense sounds. We'll be attending, but we're sure Nokia will publish coverage of the event itself, so stay tuned if you're unable to attend.

Microsoft held the Windows Phone 8 launch event on the Monday just passed where Joe Belfiore was joined by Steve Ballmer and Jessica Alba in presenting what the next version of the company's mobile platform has to offer consumers. How did everyone feel about what was presented?

Last night I was finally able to get my hands on all the Windows Phone devices here at the UK launch event. The impressions are by no means reviews but simply my feelings at this crucial hands-on moment.

Here are my thoughts from the evening as I get my hands on the HTC 8s and HTC 8x, Samsung ATIV S, Lumia 820 and of course the Lumia 920.

As we covered in our round-up of today's Windows Phone event, Microsoft has been an extremely busy bee indeed. Our Windows Phone forums have also been fairly active lately, particularly when our main website went down for some surprise maintenance. So what's new in the community? Ever wondered what Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Steven Sinofsky would sound like auto-tuned? We sure have, and so has Justin Angel, Principal Engineer for Windows Phone experience at Nokia, who has created a short montage of clips from the Surface and Windows 8 event.

Google has announced that its Android event, planned to be held this coming Monday in New York, has been cancelled due to severe weather concerns. The move comes just after Microsoft has created buzz with the launch of its Surface family of Windows RT tablets (Windows 8 Pro Surface hardware still on the horizon).

In case you were at work or preoccupied, you can now go back and re-watch the Windows 8 and Surface RT demonstrations and announcements from this morning. That’s the good news.

The bad news is this is still in Silverlight and you have to manually rewind back to the 1:17:45 mark (or 3:33:00 for Surface). And sorry for those scroll bars but you can blame Microsoft for that one. Hopefully Microsoft will have a YouTube version up later in the day for the rest of you living in a non-Silverlight world aka probably most of you. (You can also watch it on Microsoft's site here).

Watch after the break...Thanks, Marco300, for the tip

Windows 8, the much anticipated PC OS, was just launched in China a few hours ago, although many are still waiting for October 26 - the fateful day. As we understand, the global launch of Windows 8 will be marked by not one single event, but a whole series of them. The launch will start in China (October 23rd 10:00am local time), and end with the US party on October 26.
