exercise

7-Minute Workout is a Windows Phone 8 that guides you through twelve specific exercises in seven minutes. It shatters the excuse that there's not enough time in the day to exercise.

All you need is a chair, wall and seven minutes. 7-Minute Workout is a simple, yet effective, Windows Phone app to get your heart pumping, muscles working and sweat flowing. If you need a "easy as pie" workout app, 7-Minute Workout is one to consider.

Windows Phone Central Fitness Month App Roundup: Exercise Apps

February brings about Fitness Month around these parts and there are plenty of Fitness oriented apps available in the Windows Phone Store to help everyone get fit and survive the month. You have apps that help you develop and track your exercise routine, apps that track your calories and apps that help you relax and recharge.

This week's app roundup focuses on the exercise apps for our Windows Phones. Apps that will track our exercise progress, give us a little motivation or simply lay out an exercise routine for you to follow.

We picked five such apps from the various Windows Phone Store "top" categories (top free, top paid, best rated, new+rising). The roundup is but a sampling of what is available. As always, if you have a favorite exercise app that isn't mentioned speak up and throw out your recommendation below in the comments.

Track your calories with MyFitnessPal

As fitness month continues around these parts, we want to revisit a Windows Phone app that will help you count calories. MyFitnessPal is a calorie counting app for your Windows Phone device that boasts the largest food database available with over 1.2 million food items.  MyFitnessPal tracks your calories not only from meals and snacks but also calories lost from exercises.

We reviewed MyFitnessPal about a year ago and found it to be an exceptional Windows Phone app to monitor your diet and fitness routine. The app has been updated since we last looked at it and it remains a nice option to consider.  Worthy of revisiting.

WPCentral's roundup of running/jogging apps for your Windows Phone

Several months ago the popular fitness app RunKeeper was pulled from the Windows Phone Marketplace. The reason was simple, the developer decided to drop support for the app and focus on other platforms. This opened the door for other fitness apps to step up and fill the gap.

We decided to take a peek at the popular fitness apps that concentrated on running/jogging to see what alternatives are out there. Plus Dan just joined a fitness center and is looking for a good jogging app.

After reading user reviews on the Marketplace and taking a peek at the apps ourselves, we've narrowed the field to five.  All five have similarities with online components and making use of your Windows Phone's GPS.  One even adds a storyline and a bit of suspense to your workouts.  As always, if we missed the running app that you think is the bee's knees, jump in below and share your thoughts in the comments.

Zombies, Run! races on to the Marketplace

Zombies, Run! has hit the Windows Phone Marketplace. It is listed as a fitness app that plays out more along the lines of a game.

Zombies, Run! has you listening to a story line or mission while jogging or walking. As you progress through the audio adventure you collect supplies that are used at your base township, after your run. The supplies are used in turn to support township growth and as your town grows, additional missions become available.

The main page of Zombies, Run! has options to view the chapters/missions, check you township, view the people/places/special items/supplies you've collected and access the app's settings.  Settings covers turning on/off zombie chases, how item pick-ups are confirmed (speech/vibration), run the app under the lock screen and unit measurements.  To start your run and the mission, just swipe up from the bottom of the main page.  Once your run is complete, you'll get a summary screen highlighting your run and items collected for distribution.

Zombies, Run! contains thirty missions and over forty runs. In addition to making your runs more interesting by avoiding Zombies, collecting supplies and building your township the app also tracks your fitness progress by displaying your distance, time and pace for each run on the summary screen.

Zombies, Run! is an interesting exercise/game concept that may make those morning runs a little more exciting. Who knows, it may give you enough motivation to run more often.

There is a free trial version available for Zombies, Run! to let you try things out. The full version of Zombies, Run! is currently running $7.99 and you can find it all here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, Vanessa and Adrian, for the tip!

We've covered Your Shape: Fitness Evolved and its companion app before but for those who don't remember, Your Shape is a Xbox 360 Kinect title that helps you exercise and get fit. The corresponding companion app allowed you to track your progress, see your rankings, get Your Shape news, etc and it was a pretty nifty thing to have.

With the new year, UBI Soft released Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 for Kinect. That game is a big overhaul of the 2011 version with a new UI, many more exercises and just overall a much better experience (we picked up ours for $29 on Amazon.com, which was a steal). So it's nice to see that the companion app too received a makeover and we really like the changes:

  • Brand new design and accessibility improved.
  • Guest mode for players without a Uplay account.
  • Live Tile to display your current level and calories burned.
  • You will now be able to interact into the application: create, join and abandon current competitions

Nice changes indeed. The ability to create goals is quite useful and the Live Tile with calorie counter is a a great way to stay motivated. Look, we're not going to get all preachy about health, but if you have a Kinect you owe yourself to get this game (or any other Kinect fitness title) and really use your Xbox 360 to help better yourself as well as have fun. Having this Windows Phone tie-in makes it that much cooler and we hope we see more instances like this in 2012 (except for you, Dance Central 2--get back in the corner).

Pick up Your Shape here in the Marketplace for free. Check the official trailer for Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 after the break...

City Walk - Review

It's a little strange reviewing an exercise app for your Windows Phone while its still winter but, we ran across an interesting Windows Phone 7 app that might come in handy when the weather improves. City Walk has been developed by Powerapp that will add a competitive twist to your outdoor walking routine.

The concept is simple, the Windows Phone 7 app divides your city into 50x50 meters sectors and your goal is to touch upon each of the fifty squares. Sure you could cheat and hit them all while driving around in your car but you don't burn as many calories that way.

To read more on City Walk, just make the jump past the break.

Review: Joggah v1.0

Admittedly I avoid exercise like the plague but software developer Subsembly GmbH has a Windows Mobile application that might make jogging a little more attractive. Joggah is a running log book, timer, distance calculator, and shoe mileage calculator.

Granted it's unlikely to get me training for a marathon, if jogging, walking or hiking is your cup of tea, Joggah might be worth a look. It'll even help you keep track of how many miles your shoes have on them. Follow the break to see how well Joggah can keep pace things.

Workout with Windows Mobile

Let's face it: if you're reading this blog there's a healthy chance have a Windows Mobile device on your person at all times. Even, we suspect, when you're working out. Don't just let it sit there clipped to your shorts (or tucked into your spandex. By the way, please stop doing that. Ew.), instead you can put it to good use by tracking progress and details in your workout.

Create an Excel spread sheet for your workout plan. Along the top you can label each date and along the left hand side you will have all your workouts and weight. As you go from day to day you can enter weights lifted and exercises performed. This way at the end of each month you can use the option to create a graph and see how you have been doing. It may not hold a candle to the superb Nokia Sports Tracker, but it's a start.

There's other workout-related uses too. Gym playing crappy top 40 during your reps? With your Windows Mobile phone you can customize the music you listen to according to your work out. Running a 4 mile distance today? Try some Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky theme song. A set of lightweight A2DP bluetooth headphones can also help keep you from getting wires tangled with those crazy Bowflex machines too.

A great idea is to use your WinMo device to track your diet. I suggest you pick up Health and Diet Manager to keep track of food. This program tracks everything from calories to protein, and exercises allowing you and your diet to be one again. Now at the end of the day you can sleep easy knowing you cut those extra calories out of your diet.

If you're a slob like a certain Editor I know, you might need to set your sights a little lower. Say - use your Windows Mobile smartphone to send twits to Qwitter, a site that uses Twitter to help you quit smoking.

These are some ways you can use your Windows Mobile phone to slim down or size up for summer. Let us know in the comments how you
