The team behind the Facebook for Windows Phone app has announced an imminent update that will address an issue, which was introduced in the recent 2.3 update. A number of our readers noticed that you could no longer access the Events from the main menu (this now requires hitting the "..." menu and filtering our the news feed).

Good news for those who utilise this feature often and miss the easy menu entry. We'll update you all when the fix has been approved and rolled out on the Marketplace.

We mentioned how this morning version 2.3 of the official Facebook app should be going live today and true to their word, it has.

The new version brings a complete redesign of the UI as can be seen above in some new screenshots. The panorama look makes the app more Metro friendly and more importantly, it adds much more functionality like the ability to see and add "likes" to posts. There's also a refined tool bar at the bottom with quick access to Check in, Add (post) or quickly add/take a new photo.

In addition, you now have access to pages, groups, feed filters, privacy information and banner images. Speed of the app seems on par with before and we're hoping for more reliable notifications (always a tricky issue that is more Facebook than Windows Phone).

So far it looks to be a solid and respectable update, something many of you have been wanting for months now--so are you satisfied? Hit us up in comments...

Pick up the official Facebook app version 2.3 here in the Marketplace (and watch our video tutorial on how to force the update).

Good news for you Facebook users out there not yet content with the official app, today you should be receiving an update to version 2.3 which from the looks of it is quite significant. From the Facebook page:

"Test out your groups. Visit your pages. Look at who likes your posts. Change the banner image. Check out the improved news feed performance. Use the new filters. Explore the improved navigation."

  • News feed performance improvements
  • New panorama design
  • New profile design.
  • Banner Images
  • Improved navigation
  • Pages
  • Groups
  • View “likes”
  • Feed filters
  • Posting privacy
  • Bug fixing

We're not big Facebook users but even we recognize that a lot of those are things many of you have been asking to be added. And new panorama design? Yes, please!

We just did the Marketplace check and saw v2.2 was still listed, so you may want to go in and check on a regular basis. Remember, you can watch our video tutorial on how to "force the update" when it does become available instead of waiting for the notification.

Pick up the official Facebook app here in the Marketplace.

Seesmic has come out with an interesting app that some of you will find interesting. It's a post-everywhere type app where you just fill out one field and send it off to the interwebs.

Perfect for those with multiple Twitter profiles, a Facebook account or two and even throw in a LinkedIn for safe keeping, Seesmic Ping seems to have it all covered.  What's unique about Ping though is the ability to add as many accounts as you want, allowing you to post to one or all per post. You can even share links and add photos with a thumbnail view with ease.

Even better, it allows you to write drafts for later, allowing the system to "auto post" for you at a specific date or time. This is all done not so much via the app but by using Seesmic's "log in" system where they basically maintain all of your accounts for you, much like their Desktop app. It's a neat little service and for those on the go who need to remote post, probably one of the best (and perhaps only) solution for Windows Phone.

We've been playing with the app and ran it through some test posts with no problem. We have to admit, it is convenient to use and to the point. Plus it's free so there's not too much to complain about here. The Ping service was recently launched across iOS and Android too so it's nice to see Seesmic giving Windows Phone the nod too as it came out at the same time.

Pick it up here in the Marketplace for free. Thanks, Amir, for the heads up

If Facebook is any indicator, it looks like Windows Phone has seen a significant boost recently.  Since Christmas, the number of Facebook users connecting via WP7 has increased by 200 thousand.  The figure now stands at 1.3 million users total.  While Windows Phone Facebook usage has steadily increased since WP7's launch, this bump looks to be the most dramatic yet.

WMPoweruser has used the numbers to make a shaky estimate of 8-9 million Windows Phones devices out there in the ether.  We're not sure how accurate that number actually is, but it would be swell if that were indeed the case.

Display a Windows Phone in Facebook chat

This is pretty humorous. Should you be on Facebook and wish to shout out at contacts about Windows Phone in chat, you can now have a small image of a Nokia Lumia 800 show up, thanks to Rudy Huyn, with the following code (see the above example):

Add a twist to your messages with MyTextTwister

Need to spice up your text messages? Want to drive your friends crazy with upside down text messages? Want to do the same with Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live posts?

If you do, check out MyTextTwister over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. MyTextTwister adds a creative touch to your messages and posts with text effects such as inverted, rounded, leet speak, and lots of ASCII art effects.  A recent update to the app added a holiday theme to the available art effects.

MyTextTwister's interface is simple. You have one field to enter your text in a normal fashion and a preview field to show the effected text. Just below these two field is where you choose your Twisting Logic. Down below are buttons to add ASCII decorations, send the text to your SMS client, email the text or send it to a Facebook, Twitter or Windows Live.

It is noted in MyTextTwister's Marketplace description that sending ASCII arts and text effects relies on your service provider's support for sending 16-bit unicode text SMS and the receiving phone's support to receive such messages.

MyTextTwister is an interesting Windows Phone app to give your text messages and social media posts a unique flare. MyTextTwister is a free, ad-supported mango app that you can grab here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Nokia's Snake dresses up for the holidays

Nokia is at it again with their brilliant adver-tainment campaign.  They have added the classic Snake game that they had used to advertise on MSN UK to their Facebook page.  This time around, they have thrown a Christmas sweater on it, using wrapped gifts as the snake's snack.  As you slither around gobbling up presents, the snake grows longer, making it tougher to navigate the tiny confines of the page.

With the tie-in to Facebook, players can share their scores (mine were too low to be proud of) or even challenge their friends.  If you want to kill some time, check it out using the source link below.  Beware the ultra-catchy midi soundtrack.

Windows Phone UK has started up a social rewards program, titled "into by Windows Phone" that provides followers with intriguing prizes should they accumulate enough points. It's a great way to get Windows Phone owners advertising and promoting the platform to friends and family to win the rewards.

Offers are handpicked, as well as unique events and experiences (such as an Arctic Cold Adventure). The video located after the break explains the program best.

Nokia's Lumia 800 Facebook giveaway continues

A few weeks ago we mentioned that Nokia was holding a contest to give away five Lumia 800s. It looks as if Nokia isn't through giving away their Windows Phone because another giveaway contest has surfaced on Nokia's Facebook page.

This go around Nokia will be giving away nine Lumia 800 Windows Phones and nine more to your friends.  That's what? 90 phones in all?

To enter go to Nokia's Facebook Page, "like" the contest and fill the on-screen People's Hub with your Facebook Friends.  The contest ends on December 20, 2011 and winners will be notified by email. Oh and to increase your chances of winning, your friends can enter the contest and add you in their People's Hub as well.  That way if they win, you win.

Good luck everyone!

Facebook app experiencing some errors

There appears to be an issue with the Facebook app for Windows Phone, with a number of readers reporting the same problem over on our forums. Should you install the Facebook app from the Marketplace and attempt to login you will be greeted by; "Sorry, there was an error." The app generally experiences problems when alterations are made on Facebook's end. A community moderator at Microsoft Answers has been made aware of the issue, but let's hope the team addresses this soon. In the mean time, the Facebook integration still works flawlessly.

Are you having these issues? Head on over to our forum to join the discussion.

Try the Lumia 800 for yourself on Facebook

Nokia (as well as Microsoft with the huge Windows Phone) has literally kept to "The Amazing Everyday" tagline they have been using throughout the Lumia 800 marketing campaign. You can now witness the beauty of the platform on Nokia's Facebook in a demo that loads your profile details and inserts your photos, contacts and more. It creates a personalised experience, which reflects how it would be like to own and use the handset with your accounts synchronised. Once the video walkthrough is complete, you are then able to manipulate the screen and check out individual features.

Windows Phone - You are what you app

Windows Phone's Facebook page has a new gadget. The "You are what you app" gadget allows you to pin your friends to a virtual Windows Phone and app tiles to complete phrases.

You have fifteen templates that range from "Did you hear (insert Friend) won't (insert app) or (insert app) unless no one is looking?" to "If I was younger, I'd (insert app) more, (insert app) less, and (insert app) about as much as I do now."  There is also a free-form template where you add the text to the story board tiles.

You have access to ten categories of apps and access to your Facebook Friends to complete the story. You can even click on the pre-set tiles to modify the text. Once you're done, you can share your creation with all your Facebook buddies.

Only downside to this gadget is the WPCentral app isn't on the list of tiles you can use. You can find the "You are what you app" feature here at the Windows Phone Facebook page.

Happy Halloween everyone, as a present from Microsoft we have Facebook version 2.2 being rolled out. This update, as previously covered, contains the fast-switching capability as well as the introduction to the deep linking feature. Users can now pin messages, news feeds and more to the home screen. Toast and tile notifications are now present too.

A fairly large update to keep the app on par with other Mango apps. You can download Facebook from the Marketplace. Wonder when groups support will be added?

Note: Also of interest, the app now supports right to left languages like Arabic or Hebrew, which is a big deal for those new markets. (Thanks, Amir)

Facebook will be a Mango for Halloween

Speaking at Nokia World in London today, Windows Phone top dog, Joe Belfiore, confirmed that Facebook will get a Mango makeover next week.  Aside from fast-switching, the improved Facebook app will include deep linking capability, the ability to link features like Messages and News Feeds to the Start page.

Belfiore would not elaborate too much on what other features would be in the update, but he did say that it will work in conjunction with the current Facebook integration that is already built into Windows Phone. The free update is expected to be released on Halloween.

We've received reports from readers that they seem to be experiencing some trouble with the Facebook feed in People Hub where updates aren't appearing from friends and contacts. The good news is that it's not an actual bug or problem but more of the social network viewing the Facebook integration in Windows Phone as a third-party app, not an official app.

As each registered account has control over who can view and access status updates as well as personal details it's up to that contact to set privacy controls accordingly. Should they not allow status updates through third-party apps then you will unfortunately not be able to view when they visit the bathroom or when their mood changes.

Here's an official response from Microsoft in a support thread:

"Facebook considers Windows Phone to be a third-party app, rather than an official Facebook app. This means Windows Phone only has access to information that is shared with apps and websites.

Each individual has control over what they share (Account > Privacy Settings > Apps and Websites: Edit your settings > Info accessible through your friends: Edit settings). If someone disables "My status updates," their friends will be not be able to see the updates in third-party apps. They will, however, show up on the Facebook website and in official Facebook-branded apps. Turning off platform apps entirely makes the user's whole Facebook profile disappear from Windows Phone.

This can be very annoying, but people should be able to control what they share. The ideal solution would be for Facebook to make Windows Phone an official app. Until that happens, updates from some friends may not appear in the People Hub."

Join the discussion over on our forums!

Update: To be able to see your contact updates in the People Hub, that contact will need to alter their privacy settings and enable "status updates" in the following area: "> Privacy Settings > Apps and Websites: Edit your settings > How people bring your info to apps they use: Edit your settings"

Windows Phone FaceBook page changed for Mango

Windows Phone has updated their FaceBook page for the arrival of Mango, inviting folks to "Meet 7.5."  The revamped page features a video tour of Mango by Beth Goza, Senior Manager of Windows Phone Marketing.  The tour captures key concepts of WP7, such as People, Communications, Apps, and Internet.  It goes over the basics of the Start screen, Live Tiles, social network integration, gaming, and the newly-empowered Bing.  Nothing Earth-shattering here, but it's a nice introduction for those unfamiliar with Windows Phone and the upcoming Mango enhancements.

Check it out.

Windows Phone logo for Facebook gets a remake

We've mentioned before that with "Mango", Microsoft is updating their logo for Windows Phone to the square version, enhanced by the various accent colors of the OS. The new logo received mixed reactions from you the last time with most agreeing it makes sense but that you still liked the old one better.

Well, now you can see it even more as Microsoft has changed the lil' icon for when you post to Facebook--you know, that tiny guy that tells you what service you posted from. While seemingly a minor detail, Facebook is a great place to spread the word about new technology and the new icon certainly has some pop to it. Clicking the link of course brings you to the Windows Phone Facebook page to learn more. Not bad.

Thanks, Loopyeyes and Nick L, for the tip

Interestingly, the other day we saw what was thought to be the first screenshot of Windows Phone "Tango", the next iteration of the OS coming after "Mango". Starting with build 8200 and higher, "Tango" is still a bit of a mystery, seeing as "Mango" hasn't even rolled out yet. Yesterday we saw mention of it as a low-cost option for Microsoft.

Now from a Slovakian Facebook page, we have an individual supposedly selling an HD7 with "Tango" on board. That's the same area of the world where we saw the last "Tango" sighting. Translated from the page:

"HTC HD7 16GB (T9292 Schubert) for sale. You can select from three builds of Windows Phone - 7.0.7392, 7.10.7720 (Mango), 7.10.8200 ("Tango"). The first two are stable and functional build, third is dev build (not stable and to continue with official builds you have to flash it using RUUs). Price starts at 150€, you can contact me on my mail which I have on the forums, only through mail, highest price wins, delivery is not included in the price (only express delivery, not post office). In mail, write down which version of the OS you want, RUUs are not included. All accessories, slovak distribution, arrived today :)"

So like the Toshiba TG-01, here's your change to have a one of kind device. Though we'll stick to local sales in the States for now, you know, just in case.
