Facebook updated to 2.1

Back on the 18th Facebook posted that they were aware of the problems loading images with Facebook for Windows Phone and were working on a fix. The fix landed this morning with the version 2.1 update.

The problem was that users couldn't see picture galleries of friends. An annoying little bug seeing that part of the Facebook attraction is the ability to share photos as well as thoughts.

Version 2.1 was pushed out this morning and now we can see photos from all our friends. If you haven't downloaded your free copy of the Facebook for Windows Phone app, you can find it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to Shipwreck for the tip!

Microsoft shows off Twitter integration in Mango

Here's an interesting new video from Microsoft detailing the changes in Mango, specifically related to Twitter integration (as well as Facebook and LinkedIn). We know that there is a final or near final build of the Mango OS going around, namely 7710, which is probably the same version we reported on last week in regards to Twitter usage.

In the video, Stuart Bottom, Program Manager at the Communications Group on Windows Phone, goes over how Twitter will work, notifications, the "Me Tile" and more will all come together in the update. Finally we get to see how Twitter will look (very similar to the Facebook feed) as well as those ever important notifications.

What's really convenient is being able to see when someone has replied to a Tweet or posted on your Facebook wall, right on your Me tile, which should result in more efficient use of your time. In addition, filtering of those feeds to quickly find and see what you want is also a pretty brilliant idea.

By the looks of things lately, only a few more weeks till Mango starts rolling out. We couldn't be more excited. Check out the rest of Microsoft's tour videos of other features on their YouTube channel.

You should know by now that Windows Phone "Mango" has Facebook Chat built in to the Messaging app (see our full Mango review). Turning it on is actually pretty simple: navigate to the Messaging (SMS) app, hit Setting and enable. Or you can do it under Settings --> Applications --> Messaging. Easy enough, so why the how to? Well, this is more a "troubleshooting" thing i.e. you're one of the very few who can't it to work.

See, since I've been running "Mango"  (nearly a month next week), I could not get Facebook Chat enabled. Yup. Every time I'd throw that lil' switch, it would ask me to setup Facebook Chat, it would then open what looks like an embedded IE window where it would return with a "Page cannot be found". Seriously. It did this dozens of times and I just thought "welp, it's not enabled yet".

Long story short: I didn't have my Facebook account linked to my Windows Live one. Who knew it was necessary? It would have been nice for an error message to explain that but alas, I was lost till I ran across Mobility Minded's excellent step by step guide on setting this up. The guide was perfect right up to the point when I had to enable the feature and bam...it still didn't work.

The solution was an extra step not in Mobility Minded's otherwise great write up: delete the Facebook account on the phone and set it up again (just name and password). The next time I headed to Messaging --> Settings, Facebook Chat was magically enabled and all is good. Of course the funny part in all of this is I don't use Facebook or Chat period, except for testing. Still, this issue was nagging me and hopefully if any of you have something similar, it'll help too.

Facebook app having issues with photos?

Maybe it's just us, but we've been asked whether our Facebook photos and galleries were loading in the official app. Sure enough, we can see the galleries but when we click on an image, we get the above error message, which is quite interesting (and annoying).

Photos seem to load in our Mango Picture Hub, but some are having problems there too.  The issue seems to be hit or miss with some users reporting to us no problems at all while quite a few others are getting the "Unable to load this page" message.

If it's the latter case, then it seems something on Facebook's end and not the app itself, presumably meaning no "fix" is needed for our app. We'll keep an eye on this one... Report in comments on your situation. (Thanks, Amir and our Twitter followers!)

[Oh and yes, notifications are wonky. All we can say on the matter is they work better in Mango than NoDO.]

Google+ destined for iOS, WP7 on the horizon?

The search giant is pushing forward with its latest social media product (anyone remember the rise and sudden fall of Buzz?) called Google+ and beta testing has been well underway with invites being rolled out. TechRadar reports that Google has confirmed that an iOS app will be hitting the App Store in the closing future which will feature native support. Question is, will they support Windows Phone 7?

Google+ is seen as the potential Facebook Killer and has a lot of hype to live up to according to the social media sphere. Since we already have Facebook and soon-to-be Twitter integration, I think Google+ could be a worthwhile addition. If we look at the current Google presence on WP7, it's nothing to be proud of. Users of docs, calendar, GMail, GTalk and other services have to switch between apps and there's no fluidity.

Google+ could become a hub of sorts, which could include all the social features which is present on the web version (chat, video conferencing, messaging etc.) while bringing in other Google services into one location. Then again, we do have Skype coming and WP7 is a very social integrated OS already. Would we really need another social network?

Reminder App - App Spotlight

Here's a simple way to use your Windows Phone to keep track of special events related to your Facebook friends. The Reminder App pulls in all the important dates from your Facebook friends and lays it all out nicely in a multi-page hub.

Key features include:

  • Ability to see who has a birthday today, next week, next month, etc.
  • Ability to easily see whose birthday you've just missed
  • List and thumbnails views
  • Live Tile displays all of your friends that have a birthday today
  • Wish a happy birthday via friend's facebook wall-syncs with your Facebook account.

Future updates are in the works to bring integration with your Windows Phone contact list as well as integration with other social networks such as LinkedIn.

The Reminder App is a free app over at the Marketplace and you can find it here (opens Zune).

Yup. Today is a huge day for Windows Phone indeed and, to top it off, the official Facebook app just hit 2.0 and finally (finally!) brings Push Notifications (Toast + Live Tile) to the game.

What's really great is just how much you can choose to be notified on: Message, Wall Post, Feed comment, Feed comment reply, Photo tag, Photo comment, Tagged photo comment, Photo comment reply...etc, etc. All of those are optional for notifications, which gives you the user some great control over how the app works.

Overall, the app feels smooth and now, dare we say, is complete? Go get it here in the Marketplace. (Thanks, @wp7ap, for the heads up!)

One thing we tried to push at MIX11, despite all the awesome news, was all that info was for developers, not consumers (though we tried to show why it mattered). The point being that Microsoft still has tricks up their sleeves for Mango/7.5 that we have yet to see and we're sure there will be plenty.

Evidently one of those is a built-in, native check-in system analogous to Foursquare or Google's latest addition to Latitude. This will be done via your Live account, which makes sense since you use that to "log onto" the phone.

All of this comes way of one @KADacey, who is testing said system with the Twitter source '(WindowsLive)INT', which when clicked links back to the Windows Phone site (curiously, he has since deleted the above Tweet, ahem). To make it more interesting, Manan Kakkar points out that '(WindowsLive)INT' is the Live Messenger Facebook app. So take that for what it's worth, which we think is a lot.

Big thanks to clubdirthill for finding the original tweet and Manan Kakkar for digging deeper

Seesmic, the free Twitter/Facebook app, received a major update today. Watch out! With all these new features, it's only a matter of time before the app outgrows its human oppressors.

Seesmic version 1.5 changelog:

Improved user experience: We worked hard to improve the user experience with the context menus, and we hope you'll agree that the experience is slicker than ever before.
Saleforce Chatter: We improved the UI to make navigation more intuitive.
Speak a tweet: Yes, tweets read outloud to you! We are not kidding!
Trend integration: Check out "What The Trend".
SMS Integration: Send a tweet via SMS.
Hyperlinks: You choose how you would like to open hyperlinks, either in-app browser or Internet Explorer.
Spring cleaning: Yes, we got rid of a few pesky issues in Facebook timelines and complications with Twitter logins.

The Speak a tweet option is the most promising new feature. You just click on a tweet, expand the menu at the bottom of the screen, and choose ‘Speak.’ Seesmic then reads your tweets back in a frightening robotic voice, but it’s still a great idea. I’d like a Speak button to join the Reply, Retweet, and Favorite buttons at the bottom of the screen instead of having to expand the menu first. The feature seems like it would be most useful while on the road or when your hands are otherwise full, so less clicks is better.

Seesmic is a great way to tweet and check your Facebook feed and messages. Pick it up here in the Marketplace.

We just got word that the Facebook app for Windows Phone got bumped to v1.5, which you can grab right now in the Marketplace.

Earlier, we reported that this app was supposed to be getting notifications and that it was coming "soon". While an update did in fact come soon, we're not seeing any options under Settings for notifications but perhaps we're missing something (it's only been about 5 minutes since we updated). We did noticed the "Refresh" setting is now "Cache expiration" and set at 10 minutes, but other than that...

Anyways, you can grab the app here. Sound off in comments on anything you notice different or better and we'll update this post with the info.

Thanks, @deeper2k, for the heads up

moTweets 2.2 headed to the Marketplace

We’re fans of moTweets ‘round these parts, the features and UI make it one of the top Twitter clients for Windows Phone 7 at this point. Looking at the features that are coming in version 2.2 we can’t help but get excited. In addition to fixes to GPS retrieval and some other bugs; Panoramic is adding themes, Facebook integration, and support for tools like Twitlonger and Plixi/TweetPhoto.

Keep an eye out for both the free and $0.99 versions of moTweets 2.2 in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The full moTweets 2.2 change log is after the break.

According to Jaime Rodriguez on Twitter, a client evangelist at Redmond, the Facebook for Windows Phone 7 team is working on a fix for the problems some users have been experiencing with the official Facebook app. Until the fix is cleared and the app updated on the Marketplace, we recommend to continue using built-in integration, albeit slightly less feature rich.

Stay tuned for an announcement as to when the update is available for download!

Update: The update has been released on the Marketplace and is ready to download. Please update when possible to fix the crashing issues present.

The official Facebook application, brought to you by Microsoft, is experiencing some odd crashing issues with some users. Checking the Marketplace for the application and reading some reviews featured on the app summary page displays a clear indication as to the scale of the problem.

We have attempted to reproduce the issue ourselves, and were only able to report one instance (Samsung Focus - another Focus worked however) that experienced crashes when running the Facebook app. It appears (at this early stage) to be randomly tripped with no apparent cause(s) being identified.

Reading the reviews back to the beginning of March, it seems as though it suddenly sprung on unsuspecting users, who are now understandably frustrated. Much like the Youtube offering from Microsoft being a complete flop, this is a serious concern that must be addressed soon to prevent further negativity clouding the WP7 experience and continuing the painful reminder of the pre-NoDo update.

Are you familiar with these recent issues? There is a temporary workaround for posting statuses and commenting on friends updates via the built-in integration the Windows Phone 7 platform sports. At least we have some way of spying on people we dislike while the official gateway to social goodness is unreliable or simply not working.

Thanks mk for the tip!

We told you v1.6 was coming and sure enough, the new Flory is now live in the Marketplace.

The biggest change is of course the availability in English (and Italian) which should make the program more accessible for many out there (we love how it still says "googles" though). The other addition is it now has built in Facebook IM, which acts through the Flory servers bringing direct, pushed chat right to your phone. Combined with the already featured Google Talk and this is one powerfully IM app.

The program is still free and after Flory upgraded their servers today, everything seem to be in working order. Grab it here, nao. Thanks, Alan, for the heads up.

LinkedIn updates for PeopleHub [How To]

Do you use LinkedIn for networking with colleagues and co-workers? Would you love to receive updates from this social platform on your phone in PeopleHub, alongside Facebook? Good news – this is easily achievable in just a few steps.

Ensure your Live account is synced to your Windows Phone 7 device before we proceed. To get linked in (get it? heh) on your phone, follow these steps:

  1. From your computer, log-in to your Windows Live account and scroll down to “Messenger Social” on the dashboard/main page, click Add.
  2. Select LinkedIn from the list and fill in your credentials in the newly opened window.
  3. Configure the settings to your preference as to what is to be synchronized between your Live and LinkedIn accounts.
  4. Hit Save, and we’re done!

Simply open PeopleHub on your phone and any status updates from your friends on LinkedIn will now populate the list as well as Facebook. Before you begin experiencing horrid thoughts about your contacts list being imported from the social platform to your phone, fear not, this only synchronizes status updates.

Prevent Facebook contacts inclusion [How To]

Have a lot of friends on Facebook? Do you have people added on your contact list that you don’t know, possibly residing in a different continent? If you don’t contact them via the social giant, why would you want them accessible on your phone?

Although Windows Phone 7 performs extremely well with integrating with Facebook, some of us just wish to have a more personal experience with our phone should our social network contact list be rather large. Many potential WP7 users are asking (and have previously asked) about turning the synchronization feature within the People hub in the OS off.

While you can’t completely turn it off without removing the Facebook account, there’s an easy and simple setting within the People configuration section that sets between “Show all my Facebook friends” and “Only add Facebook information to existing contacts”. To achieve the desired alteration, go to the following location:

Settings > Applications > People

If you’d like to have your Facebook friends added automatically again, simply reverse the change. Personally, I began kicking people off my friends list and kept my phone synchronizing everything.

MyBookie Lite hits the Marketplace

MyBookie has been available over at the Marketplace for about a month now bringing the world of sports betting to your Windows Phone. There is a trial version available, the paid version will run you $1.99 and now there is a free Lite version available.

The Lite version has all the functionality of the paid version except it's ad supported and you have a lower daily betting cap. The Lite Version shares the Facebook integration, just like the full version, allowing you to compete against your Facebook friends, access the game through Facebook and share your bets for payout bonuses on your Facebook Wall.

Hundreds of thousands in virtual cash have been wagered on real world sporting events through MyBookie since its release.  We liked what we saw when we reviewed MyBookie and found it to be an entertaining way to dabble in sports wagering without loosing your shirt.

If the $1.99 price tag has you sitting on the fence, the Lite Version might be the solution you're looking for. You can download MyBookie Lite here (opens your Zune desktop) at the Marketplace.

MyBookie - Review

Ever wonder how you'd fair in betting on sporting events? MyBookie from Psydian Interactive will let you see how well of a prognosticator you can be without loosing your shirt.

MyBookie is a fantasy game that lets you bet imaginary cash on real sporting events. The sporting events, odds, and outcome are real while the cash isn't. Bets can be placed on the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL as well as college football and basketball. You can bet the spread, over/under or the money line. As an added bonus, MyBookie is integrated with Facebook. You can brag about your bets on your Facebook wall as well as access your MyBookie account through Facebook.

MyBookie is an interesting game and to see if it's a winner, ease on past the break.
