Under a month ago we told you guys about Pixl, a beautiful Flickr app for Windows Phone. We praised the good design of the application and it’s easily one of the better ways to interact with Flickr on Windows Phone. They added an update yesterday that adds some fun filters to the images you upload. Check it out.

Pixl is a beautiful Flickr app for Windows Phone

Odds are you have a 500px or Flickr account if you enjoy photography. Doesn’t matter if the shots are coming from a DSLR or Micro Four Thirds camera, most photogs are part of some online community. Flickr is arguably the most well-known of those online communities, and while it may have grown stale in features the past few years, it’s still on top for most people. If you’re among those heavy Flickr users, you might want to check out Pixl for Windows Phone.

The Windows Phone 8 lockscreen app Photostream just got a little better.

Photostream already gives you the ability to not only rotate your lockscreen wallpapers from images in your Pictures Hub but PhotoStream will also tapped into Flickr to generate lockscreen wallpapers. The app was recently updated to version 1.2 and allows you to tap into photos on 500px as well.

There's a new Flickr page dedicated to the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone's camera.  Created by professional photographer Alex Efimoff, the page highlights photos taken with the Lumia 920's Pureview Camera.  The photos range from low light shots to macro shots take with the 920.

The images appear to be a collection of test shots taken by Nokia as well as images captured by Efimoff with the Lumia 920. The Flickr page also has an invitation to add your own photos and video clips taken with the Lumia 920.

Windows Phone App Review: Pickr

Pickr is a photography app for your Windows Phone that lets you browse and search for images that are posted to Flickr. It's from the same developers that brought us Video Diaries and isn't a bad image surfing app.

Pickr offers pages to view images uploaded to Flickr for the past seven days, which keywords are hot for today, and a favorites page to pin your favorite images to. At the bottom of the Pickr's pages is a magnifying glass button to let you search for images by keyword or by photographer.

Add two more apps that have been updated to enjoy the Windows Phone 7.5 features. Flickr and Lindy Reader have been Mango-fied.

The official Flickr app (updated to version 2.0) not only gives you access to your Flickr account but now it is integrated with your Windows Phone camera. You can launch the camera app from within the Flickr app, place a grid overlay on top of the viewfinder to help with cropping, and access camera controls/settings.

You also have Live Tile support for the camera function, your galleries (launches directly to your photostream), contact activity, as well as the app itself. The update brings a significant amount of bells and whistles into the mix and adds a good amount of functionality as well.

We first took a look at the Lindy Reader earlier this year. It's a comic book reader that let's you download comic's save on Dropbox. The Mango update (version 2.2) improves the speed of the app, adds fast resume, thumbnails, banners, and folders to make your comic book reading easier.

The Lindy Reader does have a free, ad-supported version which you can find here at the Windows Phone Web Market. The ad-free version will run you $1.99 and you can find it here at the Web Marketplace.

Flickr is a free app which you can find here at the Web Marketplace.

WP7 Explore - Review

Funny thing: the 'black screen issue is actually white if you use the "light" theme for Windows Phone 7. But that's not really what you want to hear, is it? You want to hear that Flickr finally manged to get rid of one of the most pesky bugs with their otherwise sweet app: the blank screen when launching. (Which we thought was fixed in v1.3...har har)

Well, good news is v1.4 is now live in the Marketplace and it address exactly that problem. Having tried it ourselves, we can vouch for its authenticity--it really just works now. So go ahead and grab the update or hit the link here in case you want to re-install. And if you don't care for their official version, we have to give mad props to the 3rd party app Flickr Manager, which is even better in some ways (e.g. viewing your stats). Grab that app right here.

Thanks, deeper2k, for the heads up

Looks like the Flickr team is on top of the biggest issue with the official client: a nice black screen upon launch. While it doesn't happen every time, it's enough that we've heard quite a few complaints from users about it. In v1.3, we also see a few other bug fixes/additions which are welcomed:

  • Fix problem with blank screen during startup phase for some users
  • Fix for application error when sharing from media hub with a large number of photos
  • Background photos on home panorama now change from time to time

Let us know in comments now if this app is up to standards. We already think of it as one of the best to represent WP7, but it's even better without that glaring aforementioned issue, no? And considering we just got v1.2 last week, it looks like Flickr is actively engaged with this app. Grab it here in the Marketplace.

There was a lot of hubbub yesterday about Yahoo "launching" the Flickr app for Windows Phone...even though it came out last month and has had one update already. There was talk of another update but nothing happened...till now.

Version 1.2 is now available here and it adds one single, but extremely valuable function: the ability to download photos to the phone. We like that and it nearly completes the app, in our eyes.

The Windows Phone Flickr app received a nice little bump this morning to version 1.1 with a few significant updates. Not bad for only two weeks of release.

First up is Pictures Hub integration, allowing near seamless mixing of Flickr and the default, but powerful Windows Phone picture management system--basically now you can direct upload from your photo selection without launching the app. Second is the always welcomed "better performance" update. We always tend to see this after the big "1.0" push, so nice to get it here (it really needed it).  Finally the less exciting but crucial to Flickr "tags" are now supported for photo uploads.

You can grab the update here in the Marketplace; Thanks, @depper2k, for the heads up

Sure, it's a couple days late, but what's that between friends? Yes folks, the official Flickr app from Yahoo! has finally arrived and it is as glorious as you expected it to be.

We won't go into too much detail now, just run and grab it in the Marketplace as we think it was worth the wait.

Bonus: Turns out Flickr was holding out on us as the app has a Live Tile, which seems to update every hour with a new, random pic.

In a plug for Microsoft's Azure cloud service and a win for consumers, Microsoft and Flickr today announced dedicated apps coming to Windows Phone 7 and Windows 7 slates.

The program looks about as smooth and integrated as you can get between cloud-based photo sharing and Windows Phone, demonstrating the strengths of both technologies. Of note is the excellent looking "comment" ability that users will be able to take advantage of when discussing people's photos, plus the basics like exploring your friend's photos, Flickr Explore, etc. Other features include:

  • Browse your Flickr photos in stunning high resolution display and touch navigation controls
  • Share photos with friends and family via email, Twitter, Facebook and more
  • Upload your latest images on the go with the in-app uploader
  • Seamlessly transition from your Windows Phone 7 to Windows 7 tablet and back again, without ever losing your place

Available for download on January 31st. Cool. Combined with those dedicated Amazon.com and Bank of America apps coming, Windows Phone 7 continues to get all the big names and services out there.
