With Windows Phone 8 devices, we have two heavy weights with respect to cameras; the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. While the Nokia Lumia 920's camera seems to have taken center stage these days, the HTC 8X's camera is not a slouch. The 8X's camera is a very capable camera within it's own right but the settings can be a little confusing. Just as we did with the Lumia 920 Photo Guide, we wanted to walk you through the 8X's settings.

The general principles are the same but HTC's camera menu is slightly different that what we see with the Nokia Windows Phones. Hopefully in clarifying some of these settings, you can tweak things accordingly to get the most out of your HTC Windows Phone photography.

Latest figures published by market research group Kantar has revealed that Windows Phone is on the rise across the board, excluding a number of markets where sales remain low. The Nokia Lumia 920, HTC 8X and Samsung ATIV S are all high-end smartphones that will be pushing the platform forward in 2013 with potential marketshare gain in multiple locations, but how has the platform progressed through 2012?

Earlier in the week Bloomberg stated that HTC had scrapped plans for a 5” or higher Windows Phone due to the inability of the OS to scale up to 1080P. Sure, the device could pass muster with 720P or 768P but for a major device like that to hit now or in early 2013 would behind the competition.

Now it’s being reported that Microsoft’s Ballmer met directly with the CEO of HTC, Peter Chou, when he passed through Taiwan recently. In of itself this is not news as the two mega CEOs reportedly exchange emails and meet several times a year. But in this case, the limiting resolution of the Windows Phone 8 and presumably other areas of contention were brought up.

HTC Philippines held a sale on December 18th to launch the company's new Windows Phone hardware. Both the HTC 8X and HTC 8S were stocked at the HTC Concept Store in SM North Edsa where an enticing deal was on offer. The first 128 consumers who queued to purchase either smartphone received a considerable discount.

Windows Phone 8S by HTC Review

Windows Phone Central's review of HTC's mid-range Windows Phone 8 device

The Windows Phone 8S by HTC has been a quiet little device, which has recently launched in a number of markets to compliment the more advanced HTC 8X. As a mid-level Windows Phone, the 8S sports hardware that’s powerful enough to process majority of tasks quickly, but it's main attraction is the affordable price tag.

While the HTC 8X is a strong choice for those who require more power and a larger display, the 8S fits in with those who are new to Windows Phone or smartphones in general, not to mention consumers who either don’t require much horsepower, or have enough funds for high-end devices. The issue is there's a lot of competition out there, and Nokia is just starting to get back into the game with Windows Phone 8.

The HTC 8S is available on both contracted plans and Pay As You Go (PAYG), but does not break the bank balance. We’d like to throw out a thanks to Clove for sending us the unit for this review to be completed. The HTC 8S is currently available on their website. We’ve been using the device for little more than a week, but what do we make of the hardware? If you’d like the short version: we’re impressed, but there are annoyances.

The HTC 8X and HTC 8S is readily available in India, with the likes of retailer Saholic stocking both the flagship and mid-level Windows Phones for Rs. 34,149 ($624) and Rs. 19,359 ($354) respectively. We've just covered news that Lumia hardware will be heading to the market early 2013, but it's good to see other Windows Phones available in the meantime, and HTC hardware isn't necessarily a bad choice.

One step forward and two steps back. Sometimes that old saying can be applied to Microsoft, who despite doing their best to stay ahead is often slightly behind.

Such is the case with Windows Phone 8 and the ability to now have 720P and 763x1280 resolutions. On screens that are 4.7” or smaller, it’s simply stunning and a nice treat to have but its apparent limits may now be its undoing as HTC has reportedly cancelled a new Windows Phone because of it.

The phone, possibly the rumored HTC Zenith, has allegedly been abandoned due to the fact that Windows Phone 8 cannot do 1080P resolution, which would scale nicely on post 4.8” devices. The boundary, something for which Android has no problem with, is said to have been the deciding factor for HTC as anything less than 1080P would not be as competitive.

HTC mainland stores in China have started to take preorders for the 8X and 8S. The devices are on China Unicom and the 8X is available in black and red variants for 3999 RMB ($640), while the 8S can be purchased for 1999 RMB ($320) in blue and black & white. The company is clearly targeting low price points to battle Nokia in the Windows Phone ecosystem.

Virgin Mobile Canada has completely sold out of HTC 8S stock, according to an alert on its website. It's displayed when attempting to add the Windows Phone to the basket for checkout. This is a refreshing look on Windows Phone popularity with HTC hardware continuing to sell as well as Nokia handsets.

The Canadian carrier Virgin Mobile is looking for beta testers to try out new mobile phones the company will be stocking. This is also including the HTC 8S where if you register your interest (and are chosen) you'll receive the device and it could well be yours to keep for free. It's simple to get involved and the potential reward is a brand new Windows Phone.

Jeff Blagon over at The Verge recently spoke with Kouji Kodera, Chief Product Officer at HTC, and picked his brain about design differences and similarities between them and Nokia. It’s an interesting short read and we’ve pulled some of the more relevant parts about Windows Phone for you.

Microsoft has begun rolling out their first over-the-air update (aka Portico) for Windows Phone 8, bringing bug fixes and new features to the OS. [Updated with video]

We just got tipped that the HTC 8X (international) is receiving the first over-the-air update for the Windows Phone 8 OS. The update brings the OS to 10211 (up from build 9905) and brings fixes for rebooting plus adding the “keep Wi-Fi alive” feature, allowing a persistent WLAN connection when the display is off...

Windows Phone Camera Faceoff: HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 and Olympus OM-D

The other day we shared a night photo comparison between the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone and a Canon 1D-X DSLR. While the Canon 1D-X and Lumia 920 cameras are worlds apart, the Lumia 920 didn't do a bad job of capturing night photos. All of which made us wonder how the recent crop of Windows Phones would measure up against your run of the mill stand alone digital camera.

We recently took the HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 and Olympus OM-D EM-5 camera out for a comparative test drive and the Windows Phone cameras didn't do to shabby of a job. The Olympus is a mirrorless camera that is similar is design to a "point and shoot" digital camera. It has a 4/3rds sensor shares the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the two Windows Phones and the camera has in-body stabilization which is loosely similar to the Lumia 920's.

A little while ago we took a look at the Cimo S-Line Back Case for the Nokia Lumia 920. This go around we're focusing in on the same Cimo case but one fitted for the HTC 8X.

The Cimo S-Line Back Case is a skin styled case that wraps around the HTC 8X to protect it mostly from nicks and scrapes. The case may protect the 8X from some bumps but I wouldn't count on it to protect the Windows Phones from drops of any height.  There's just not enough to the Cimo case to add any cushion to things.

HTC has rolled out an update for both its Photo Enhancer and Hearing Aids apps. The former has been with us since the platform launched back in 2010, enabling HTC Windows Phone owners to easily edit (or enhance) photos saved on the device with minimal user input. It's a handy tool that's utilised by those who take regular shots and enjoy 'correcting' them before uploading to social networks.

The HTC 8S is now available from Three UK on contracted plans as well as Pay As You Go. Pricing starts at £17 a month with no upfront cost for the smartphone, or £179.99 SIM-free (locked to the carrier). The device joins the HTC 8X and is the company's low-end Windows Phone 8 offering, but isn't a slouch by any means.

Hold your breath everybody, we're publishing positive news about HTC and the company's finances. After a number of reports released by the manufacturer have each displayed signs of continued negativity, the November unaudited financial documentation is a different story.

According to company numbers, there are possible signs of improvements with revenues of NT$21.2 billion ($729 million), up from NT$17.2 billion ($529) million reported in October. This boost can be attributed to the release of new hardware on the Android and Windows Phone platforms.

The HTC 8S finally allows Wi-Fi to stay on with the display off, making it the first Windows Phone device to offer this much vaunted feature.

We've noticed something pretty awesome on our HTC 8S (review coming shortly, folks), something that many have been calling out for from Microsoft since Windows Phone launched back in 2010. In the Windows Phone 8 build that's loaded on the HTC 8S, we can enable the setting to allow the WiFi connection to remain active when the screen times out.  Huzzah!

The rumor that the HTC 8S would bring this functionality was first reported back on November 22nd and it is now 100% confirmed.

A few days ago we ran a story about Verizon HTC 8X being able to work on both AT&T and T-Mobile networks. Now another test carried out recently has showed the Chinese version of 8X shares the same feature.

The test was performed on a HTC 8X customized for China Telecom (CDMA carrier). The handset worked like a charm when switched to China Unicom (WCDMA carrier) using a different SIM card, on HSPA mode instead of the slow GPRS, as shown in the picture below...

Good news for anyone who's looking to pick up the HTC 8X on AT&T. Amazon Wireless has the Windows Phone 8 handset listed for just a single penny, that's just $0.01 when taken out with an eligible contract. Consumers will have to either extend their contract or add a new line to their AT&T account to be able to purchase the HTC 8X, but it's a superb deal with the festive holidays soon approaching.
