PC World reports this morning that everyone's favorite device manufacturer HTC is on pace to have sold 1 million Touch Diamonds by the middle of this month, and that it "is definitely able to reach its goal of shipping 2 million Touch Diamond handsets by the end of 2008."

And as if that weren't enough:

However, sources at the Taiwan handset industry speculated that HTC will eventually revise upward its shipping target for this year, and that HTC is likely to ship 2.5 to 3 million Touch Diamond handsets before the end of the year.

That said, as Dieter and Mal pointed out in their latest podcast, saying you've sold a million or so "units" doesn't necessarily mean that there are a million people walking around with Touch Diamonds. But, the Diamond's numbers are hardly anything to sneeze at, and we still have a little while longer before it's even released in the U.S

By comparison, Palm recently announced it had shipped 2 million Centros, and the iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in its first three days.

The HTC Touch Diamond is coming to Sprint. We know this. We've just been waiting to find out when.

But those of you/us who have been patiently waiting to get your hands on an honest-to-goodness U.S. version may not have to wait much longer.

A Bloomberg article (via Engadget Mobile) notes in its final sentence that HTC "will begin selling the handset through Sprint Nextel Corp. in August."

Why, that's this month! Engadget Mobile also has reports that both Best Buy and Radio Shack are getting the Diamond in this month -- Best Buy on the 17th and Radio Shack on Sept. 2nd.

Other questions remain. Will it have the multi-faced "Diamond" back? We'll see. Pricing? Remember that Canada's Telus is offering the Touch Diamond for $149. That's in Canadian dollars - and with a three-year contract, which is the norm up there. It's going for $349 with a two-year deal. Do your own extrapolating from there.

Video goodness of the HTC Touch Pro

The HTC Touch Pro (aka Raphael) recently made its way through the FCC. And to celebrate, The Unwired brings us a pair of review videos, giving you get a pretty good idea of what's in store once it hits the U.S. The first video focuses on software, while the second takes a look at the hardware.

The HTC Touch Pro is the slider keyboard version of the Touch Diamond. A quick rundown of what we can expect when it finally hits the states:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1.
  • 512 megs ROM/288 megs RAM.
  • 528 MHz Qualcomm processor.
  • TouchFLO 3D (presumably with the updated ROM).
  • Bluetooth 2.0 w/EDR.
  • WiFi.
  • Built-in GPS.
  • 3-2MP camera.
  • Slide-out keyboard.
  • 1340 mAh battery.
  • MicroSD.

And without further ado, we bring you The Unwired's:

Phone Scoop [via Mobility Site] caught the Touch Diamond over at the FCC yesterday. Ordinarily, this wouldn't bother us much, as we have long figured that it would show up in CDMA flavor here first. Oh ho, but wait, this Diamond is GSM: “This new version seen on the FCC site includes WCDMA 850/1900, and also confirms Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and Wi-Fi.”

Those WCDMA 850/1900 bands are the bands that AT&T uses for 3G here in the states. That means, of course, that the Diamond isn't going to be stuck as an EDGE-only device here. What we don't know is whether or not AT&T is going to officially pick it up. They gave the original Touch a pass and we haven't heard any rumblings yet about them picking it up, so the outlook isn't great on getting this thing at a subsidized price.

As usual, HTC has asked the the rest of the details they sent to the FCC be kept confidential, this time “indefinitely.” Ouch.

Engadget Mobile lets us know that HTC Hong Kong has posted a World Wide English ROM that supports the 850 MHz radio band for EDGE data. The folks over at XDA are poking away at it and finding that it does indeed support the 850 MHz band for GSM (read: EDGE speeds) but that 850 3G data is still tough to come by. Reports are mixed on that front -- as Engadget notes and a read-though of the XDA thread confirms, there's some weirdness with the band selection in the settings.

On other fronts, though, the ROM apparently rocks. TouchFLO 3D is reportedly much faster! The other nice thing is that the weird “we're turning the screen off whether you like it or not during a call” behavior now defaults to friendlier settings based on your global power preferences (after the initial default power-down. Yes, it's confusing, but if you have one you know what we're talking about).

We were very pleasantly surprised when a hacked ROM came out a week ago with 850 support, we're just as pleased to see HTC officially supporting the 850 band. Looks like, for once, CompUSA has been somewhat vindicated. Whoodathunk?

It turns out that the HTC Diamond's lack of support for the US bands we need to use the thing reliably may not be a hardware limitation. wmpoweruser [via] has unearthed this thread from XDA that includes a new Radio ROM. See -- there's the ROM for your smarpthone and a separate ROM for the radio. This new ROM enables support for the 850 band for EDGE, meaning the Diamond has suddenly become a viable (though EDGE-only) phone for most of the US!

Those readers have some cause to rejoice - an updated Radio ROM (V100.25.05) leaked by XDA-Developers hackers manages to activate the hidden 850 Mhz radio, allowing GSM and EDGE connectivity to work on all the GSM networks in USA. Unfortunately there is still no support for US 3G, but one is left only to wonder whether this is very far behind, seeing how HTC is planning to release the HTC Touch Diamond on the Australian Telstra network, which uses the same 3G bands as AT&T. - wmpoweruser

Indeed, if the enterprising hackers at XDA can unlock EDGE's 850 band, mayhap they can get this battlestation fully operational here in the US sooner than the rebel alliance, er, HTC does!

Review: Smartphone Experts Book Case for AT&T Tilt

The AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser II) is one of the most feature packed Windows Mobile devices currently on the market. Those of us riding the current wave of technology brought to us by AT&T and HTC are familiar with the sliding, tilting, Qwerty keyboard bearing device. The only problem with a device with so many features is that the Tilt is somewhat awkward to carry when not in use. The question of,

Sprint Diamond: Launching September 2nd?

We know this sucka is testing at Sprint right now and we've seen some earlier roadmaps that said Q3, so this just confirms what we've already expected.

Basically it looks like Sprint is getting ready to launch the heralded HTC Touch Diamond (aka HTC MP 6950; the Sprint Touch is the 6900) on Tuesday, September 2nd. So start saving your cash now. Check out Dieter's great walk-through vid of what to expect.

This puts it at around the same time as Telus (who evidently are a lot more open about their Diamond love than Sprint or Verizon).

The specs are expected to be similar to what Telus/HTC announced, though who know what Sprint will do:

  • 101mm x 51mm x 14mm
  • EVDO Rev A
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • Qualcomm MSM 7510A Processor running at 528MHz
  • 256 ROM, 256 RAM, 4 Gigs internal (no expansion)
  • Opera 9.5 for the browser
  • Camera is still 3.2mp, screen is still 640x480
  • The battery gets a big bump: it's 1340 mAh

Oho yeah and there's the 1st "glamor shot" of the Treo 800w, which is launching this week...you know, in case you haven't heard.

While you were busy spending your Independence Day stuffing yourself with hot dogs and hamburgers, another iteration of HTC's Touch Dual was working its way through the FCC.

As Endgadget Mobile points out, the "Neon" designation points to the Touch family, and the FCC testing shows a CDMA radio.

So, customers of Alltel/Verizon and/or Sprint or may have another Windows Mobile device (and big brother to the keypadless HTC Touch, which all two three carriers are currently selling) to look forward to in the coming months.

And for a look at what may be in store (minus carrier customizations, of course), check out Dieter's recent review of the unlocked GSM Touch Dual.

As we move closer to the second coming of the HTC Touch Diamond series (that is, the "Pro" aka "Raphael"), some pics and vids are leaking out.

One thing that is becoming clear: the Pro version is quite, ahem, thick.

Sure, the specs say it's the same thickness of the HTC Mogul and Tilt (~18.5mm) and it's actually less wide than those devices...but darn it all, just watch the vid after the jump and ask yourself...are you thin enough? Well are ya?

HTC Touch Pro Gets Handled

The Touch Pro and the Diamond are definitely the new hotness -- though we still don't know yet when we're going to see an American release. The Diamond made the rounds on the interw00ts first, now comes the Touch Pro. Mobileburn takes a peek and notes that HTC wouldn't let them play around with the inteface, perhaps hinting at yet more TouchFLO 3D enhancements coming down the pike. SlashGear is justifiably happy that the back of the device is matted so there'll be fewer fingerpints. Finally, PhoneScoop find the Touch Pro to be a little thick to their liking. We suppose compared to the Diamond, darn near anything is going to fee a little thick.

As excited as we are for the Xperia X1, we're HTC boys at heart. The Touch Pro looks to beat it by just a hair.

HTC Diamond and TouchFLO 3D: Vid and Gallery

For awhile now we've been covering the whole "HTC/Qualcomm Video driver drama" (read our insider Q&A for some perspective and more here).

So far we know that the unbranded HTC TyTN II (aka "Tilt") is getting WM 6.1 with a video performance boost, but no gurantees that the AT&T branded version will be getting the same. We also know that the HTC Touch Diamond, which is a powerful VGA device, does have the DirectDraw video drivers on board, though up until recently they too have underperformed.

The big question was whether the lot of other HTC devices that are based on the MSM-7xxx series chipset would be getting any help from HTC? So far, the answer appears to be "no".

Enter some crafty hackers and dedicated software pros to start piecing together bits and pieces from the TyTN II, Touch Diamond and the K620 and have a somewhat working version of the OpenGL ES driver, which according to the HTCClassAction.org site:

...provides the DirectDraw (2D) capability; so getting the OpenGL ES driver to work correctly is a big step in getting the D3D and DD working.

As you can see from their demo video, the tester app flickers during the test, but that is a result of a problem with the tester program, not the OpenGL drivers. But this proof-of-concept demonstration definitely hints that exporting and enabling these advanced video driver capabilities is possible.

Click the link to watch the the OpenGL ES Driver in action!

We'll continue to follow this story as usual!

HTC Not Poking the Apple Bear

After the announcement of the iPhone 3G this week, you'd think Windows Mobile heavyweight HTC would fire back with at least some sort of Touch Diamond or Touch Pro salvo.

But in talking to Digitimes on Wednesday, CEO Peter Chou lobbed what amounts to underpowered spit wads, putting the $199 HTC Touch in the ring with Steve Jobs' latest.

The bundled prices of HTC Touch handsets in most markets in Europe as well as Japan and the US are set below US$199 in part due to subsidiaries offered by telecom carriers, said Chou, noting that mobile operator Orange offers the HTC Touch free of charge on some contracts.

Hey, the Touch - or its recently released cousin Touch Dual - is no slouch, especially at that price point (at least it was until Monday). But if you're going toe to toe with Mike Tyson, you'd want your best fighter lacing up his gloves, right?

We have the US edition of the HTC Touch Dual here at HQ. It's the Dual that's actually useful in the US by dint of its quad-band GSM and HSDPA bands that work on AT&T.

HTC Touch Pro Gets Official

Also (better?) known as the Raphael, HTC announced the Touch Pro today. The specs are pretty much what we expected, which is to say they're very similar to the HTC Diamond with a few key differences:

  • 512MB ROM / 288MB RAM
  • No 4gigs of internal storage, but there is a MicroSD slot (better)
  • Slide-out Bluetooth keyboard
  • 1340 mAh battery good for “397 minutes” on 3G. 397 exactly?
  • All that goodness comes at a price, which is 18.05 mm of thickness. ...which is to say, just 1 mm thinner than a Tilt

Otherwise you're looking at the same awesomeness: AGPS, WiFi, 3.2mp Camera, 2nd camera, bluetooth, VGA resolution, sweet Opera 9.5 browser, sweeter TouchFLO 3D. Also, the same bad news: Dual-band HSDPA and Tri-Band EDGE, which make this another European/Asian affair. They'll be getting it later this summer, we'll be getting it later this year.

HTC Diamond Around the Web

As the HTC Diamond begins to be available worldwide, reviews are starting to trickle in. Of course, if you're US-based, reading over these things will come with a bit of sadness -- as the current iteration isn't going to work well with the bands that are available here. Nevertheless, it's fun to look.

The top spot to go looking is probably going to be coolsmartphone, who has been testing the Diamond for a full week, culminating in a 37 minute movie detailing the device. If you'd like your video in a more digestible chunk (with an unboxing appetizer), Mobility Today has your fix. Hat tip to mobile-review for having what we believe is the first HTC Diamond review. You can also find more photos over at the::unwired.

Of course, if you just cannot wait for some Diamond goodness, the ROM for the device has leaked out and been ported to the TYTN II. We're going to go out on a limb and say using this ROM is not for the faint of heart. TouchFLO 3D is going to require some pretty hefty graphics acceleration that's not going to be present on most current-gen devices.

Update: ...and here's one more at Phone Arena, with some excellent photos.
