HTC Owns "Touch" Trademark, Wants to Make Nice

I know, I know, it's not right for me to keep writing about Apple-related stuff on a Windows Mobile site, but it's a slow news day. So: when Jobs intro'd the "iPod Touch" my first thought was "Hm, I have an HTC Touch in my pocket right now. How's that gonna work out?" Apparently, it's gonna work out just fine. HTC does indeed own a worldwide trademark on "Touch" for a handheld device and could, if they were so inclined, get sue-happy. That does appear to be in the cards, however:

Ching-hung Wang (transliterated from Chinese), marketing manager of HTC pointed out that he does not think Apple's iPod touch was targeting HTC since Apple should put its focus on bigger companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. As for whether iPod touch violates HTC's trademark, Wang pointed out that in the past Apple and Cisco were able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement over the rights to the iPhone trademark, adding that the question surrounding the rights to the Touch trademark would need further observation.

Read: HTC proud to share touch vision with Apple

Two thoughts: HTC, I know you want to be humble and all, but you're a plenty big enough target for Apple (or anyone else, for that matter), no need to be so modest. Also, and I'm just saying here, name me a single person who equates "iPhone" with "Cisco" in any way, shape, or form.

...

I'm waiting.

Right. So, in the vein of "no press is bad press," I say take it to 'em, HTC. Like I said at the outset of this post, it's a slow news day and I'd love to see some action.

HTC Coming Soon: Phone Roundup

If you've been hankering for a device somewhere between a UMPC and a Smartphone, the HTC Advantage is finally available in the US for reals - supposedly it's also available on the retail store shelves at Circuit City.

I like the idea of the Advantage, kinda sorta. But if I'm going to carry around something that chunky, I'd want a full keyboard.

Verdict: Do Not Want.

Read: Gear Diary

If you were holding out hope that HTC would finally get its naming act together, stop it. The Kaiser, also rumored to be called the AT&T 8925, is now also known as the HTC TyTN II. When AT&T will release the super-device is anyone's guess.

Verdict: Want This.

Read: GCF Approves Kaiser

Also in the realm of super-devices is the HTC Polaris, which is supposed to be something like the HTC Touch on Steroids (insert Barry Bonds joke here). A few extra buttons, a faster processor, 3G, GPS, FM Radio, VGA screen, 3 Megapixel camera, and a kitchen sink.

Verdict: Want this. A lot.

Read: HTC Touch + GPS + VGA + more = HTC Polaris?

Lastly: an update to the HTC Touch, an update I do not approve of, by the way. Half the reason the Touch is so awesome is that it's so small and thin. The real hassle with the Touch is definitely not dialing numbers, it's that there isn't a decent full screen keyboard built-in.

Verdict: Do Not Want.

HTC Vogue (that's a CDMA-Touch) gets FCC Approval

We figured it was coming because of that leaked roadmap and now we have further proof - the FCC has approved the HTC Vogue, which is the CDMA (meaning higher-speed EVDO, huzzah!) version of the HTC Touch, with which I'm so smitten I can't put it down long enough to write up a review of it, choosing instead to make video comparisons with the iPhone.

Now T-Mobile in Europe has the GSM version of the HTC Touch, but I haven't seen much in the way of rumblings that it will make it onto T-Mobile in the US. Still and all, I'm pretty surprised to see that we'll be getting a CDMA version officially before we get the now available GSM version. But whatever, the more itty-bitty Windows Mobile 6 devices out there, the better. Verizon or Sprint? I don't know, but my hunch is Sprint. Just saying.

Thanks to the characteristically loose-lipped folks at the FCC, it looks like HTC's making good on the rumor that a CDMA rendition of the Touch was in the pipeline

HTC Touch Tutorials

I'm going to go ahead and count this new site detailing how to use the HTC Touch as evidence for HTC releasing the rumored CDMA version (Codenamed "Vogue") sometime in the near future. Why? Well, mostly because HTC seems to be throwing much more than their standard marketing weight behind it. The Touch currently occupies almost the entire HTC homepage, which I like except for the fact that they're trying to create a new word, "touchnology". Ugh.

Anyhow, the online tutorials detail how to bring up the Touch Cube (which, by the way, only has three sides. I would kill for a fourth that I could add apps to) as well as how to get around in the standard WM6 bits. I like the Touch, like it better than the iPhone, even. So while the standard interpretation of this site is likely just that HTC is positioning the Touch against the iPhone, my reading is that HTC really intends to release this to a wider audience.

HTC Advantage is US Retail Stores

So the HTC Advantage is available in the US, in retail even. Well, it's in CompUSA, as least, if you consider that a retail store and not a dying albatross hanging about the neck of whichever mall it happens to be attached to.

I'll admit, the urge to buy one of these, even at its $899 US pricetag, is growing stronger by the day. The specs on it are just out of this world:

  • 624 MHz CPU with ATi™ Graphic Chip W2284
  • Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 6 Professional
  • ROM: 256 MB, RAM: 128 MB SDRAM
  • 133.5 mm (L) x 98 mm (W) x 16 mm (T)
  • 359g (with battery)
  • 5" Touchscreen, 640x480 resolution
  • HSDPA/UMTS/GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
  • Bluetooth® 2.0, 802.11 b/g
  • HTC proprietary 16-pin combined port (USB 1.1 host/VGA and TV Out)
  • 3 mega-pixel camera with autofocus and flash light
  • 8GB Drive built-in

It makes the Foleo look like, well, a PalmOS device. Yes, it's chunky and yes, the keyboard is too big to thumb and too small to touch-type easily. Otherwise, this thing is a powerhouse of a device by any reasonable standard.

I-Mate on the Ropes

I-Mate has been trying to, slowly but surely, break into the US market (or at least gain wide acceptance beyond the Middle East). The big push was supposed to be part and parcel with their new "Ultimate Line" of Windows Mobile devices, but it's not looking good these days. Their finance director had to step down, their devices (with the possible exception of the JAQ series) don't get much play, and they're not HTC.

It's a pity, too, because the "Ultimate" devices are indeed Ultimate - the specs are crazy good on every one of them.

I-mate, the mobile devices specialist founded by Glaswegian Jim Morrison, was punished again by the market yesterday after announcing the resignation of its finance director.

The Dubai-based maker of the rival to the Blackberry, dubbed the "Macberry" but sold largely in the Middle East, said Gregor McNeil would be stepping down for personal reasons.

8525 Price Drop

..Must...Not...Refer...to...Jesus...Phone.....Sigh, have to do it.

Here's the deal - a $150 price drop on the powerhouse AT&T 8525 (someday it will even get that promised WM6 upgrade) would and should be news on its own. But Infoworld is pretty sure that the price drop is iPhone-release-related. As in - the 8525 is cheaper, easier to type on, and better for actual business use than the iPhone. Or maybe as in - "Oh, we're out of iPhones, but check out this smartphone, the 8525. It has a full keyboard." The latter thought doesn't make me proud, but it's certainly possible.

Or maybe the price drop has nothing to do at all with the iPhone release. Maybe, just maybe, AT&T is clearing inventory to make way for the HTC Kaiser. That thought does make me proud - proud to be an HTC fanboy.

AT&T has not set an end date for the 8525's $299 promotional pricing, but it will end.

The 8525's killer feature will be its Windows Mobile 6 upgrade, which AT&T promises for the third quarter of this year. Expect it to be downloadable, but not necessarily free.

HTC Omni Rendering and Specs

Some bits about the Omni rumors that hit over yesterday's holiday - 1) I used to think that artistic renderings of this sort were basically unreliable, but I've come around and so I think we're going to see a device that looks very much like this image. 2) It's going to be super small for what is going to be built-in, although sadly not thinner than the HTC Advantage. Just not as wide. 3) How long before video-out is standard on smartphones? 4) In the leaked HTC roadmap last month (the reliability of which I'm still not sold on), there was no mention of the Omni. 5) Oh, yeah, the specs are as hot as the device is cool-looking. Creating the relevant hot/cool pun is left as an exercise for the reader.

HTC Omni specs that we know about today are: - Windows Mobile 6.0 OS - UMTS/HSDPA connectivity - WVGA 4″ 800×480 px display, subdisplay - TV and VGA out - 256 ROM, 1280 RAM and microSD memory card slot - Wi-Fi b/g, USB and Bluetooth connectivity - GPS/A-GPS - Full QWERTY keyboard - Dimensions: 130 x 81 x16 mm

HTC Cavalier Clears FCC

Honestly, we've been waiting a long time here for the HTC Cavalier. Looong time. We heard about it first in January's HTC roadmap, then again in January when BGR fondled one. Heck, we even saw somebody else bury the Cavalier in the snow(!). So after all that, it's good to see the FCC will let it be used here in the US.

But will anybody pick it up? The Cavalier is essentially a T-Mobile Dash with HSDPA. But T-Mobile still hasn't gotten their 3G act together, so I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll do it. That leaves us with AT&T, obviously, but I can't really see them doing anything other than sticking with the Blackjack for their 3G WM Smartphone. And I have to say I can't blame them - I'll take a better keyboard over included WiFi any day - is that crazy?

Anyhow, maybe HTC will just release the phone on their own, unlocked and ready to rock, without any carrier support. I hope they do, actually. Wouldn't it be nice if all phones were sold that way instead of with the horrible contract system we're still saddled with?

HTC Product Roadmap Leaked?

There are a few surprises, though nothing earth-shattering, in this PDF of upcoming HTC Windows Mobile Devices. I wasn't expecting a CDMA version of the HTC Touch, much less one that includes EVDO Rev A with gpsOne.

Also new (to me, anyway) is the HTC Iris (s620), a Standard-edition CDMA phone with standard-edition specs, and the Volans, which appears to be the HTC Wings, aka the 3G successor to the disappointing* HTC S710/HTC Vox. And pictured at right is the Shangri-La, the slide-and-fold-up super-PPC (which will succeed the HTC Advantage). Had enough code names yet? Me too.

I put the question mark in the title there because a) the source site looks pretty new (even compared to us!) and b) the PDF slides look a little off to my eyes. On the other hand, all the info looks spot-on, so take my grain of salt with a grain of salt.

HTC Kaiser Delayed

When the Boy Genius Report said that we'd see the cool flip-up slider in July, I was skeptical. Now that it's looking like I was right, I can't say I'm especially happy about it. The more I think about it, the more I think that flip up bit is cool, but not really what excites me. What excites me is the 3mp camera and the built-in GPS.

In any case, BGR says August. I'm going to stay mum on this one -- I don't want to be proven right again.

HTC Touch - What We Expected

HTC promised a big announcement and it looks like they've delivered what we expected: a improved-touchscreen version of of the Elf.

HTC's Flash-based site, http://www.htctouch.com/, shows off the new UI goodness. The key point seems to be that it can easily detect sweeps of your finger and that it can tell the difference between a stylus and a fingertip and adapt accordingly. HTC calls it TouchFlo and we call it "not quite as good as the iPhone" - this doesn't appear to be geniune multitouch, my friends.

Nevertheless, the new UI they've slapped on top of Windows Mobile 6 is very lickable - it basically takes the idea of SPB Mobile Shell a few steps forward.

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 99.9mm (L) x 58mm (W) x 13.9mm (T)
  • Weight: 112g with battery
  • 1GB microSD storage card included / 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM
  • 2.8" LCD touch screen with backlight, 240 x 320 dots resolution with 65,536 colours
  • Battery Life: Rechargeable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1100 mAh
  • Standby time: Up to 200 / Talk time: Up to 5 hours
  • Camera: 2.0 mega-pixel CMOS colour camera
  • Windows Mobile 6® Professional with Direct Push Email and HTML email support
  • Wireless Connectivity: GSM/GPRS/EDGE Tri-band: 900, 1800,1900, Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth® 2.0
  • Choice of two colors at launch - elegant soft black or alluring wasabi green

Alluring wasabi green, eh? Spicy! It's available in the UK now and should hit the US a bit later. Check out more photos of the Touch after the break. Be sure to head over to http://www.htctouch.com/ and click "Want" -- they're giving one away.

HTC Kaiser Unboxed, Coming Sooner Than You Think

BGR has new unboxing pics of the Kaiser in a gallery plus a few details that might interest those of you who haven't been following this hot slider PPC:

  • Quad Band GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPa
  • Capacious 75mb of user-accessible RAM
  • GPS
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • The standard stuff: WiFi, Bluetooth, WM6, etc.

The rumor the Boy Genius is spreading is that it'll be available in late July, which I myself find a little overly optimistic. But here's to hoping.

Let's start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays.

HTC Prepping Big Announcement June 5th

Engadget Mobile (among many others) is reporting that HTC is planning some kind of major announcement on June 5th. Folks are speculating based on the invite to the London event that it will be some sort of iPhone-killer because the new gadget should herald "a new mobile experience that will change the way we use and control our phones."

Funny that we haven't seen prototypes of this thing - usually HTC devices are well-rumored and well-understood long before they actually arrive. Stay tuned.

Word of the Day: "Multitouch"

Microsoft announced their "Surface" computer table (more on that in just a bit), the iPhone's multitouch is likely to come up in today's "chat" between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates at the D Conference, and now this: Smartphone Thoughts is reporting that the HTC announcement next week will be that they've added multitouch to the Elf, a little WM phone that I've been ignoring because I thought it was sorta, well, boring and ugly (check out the gallery at Boy Genius) to see what I mean.

But Multitouch will make any device pretty. And multitouch on Windows Mobile 6 - my my, that's something that makes my heart go pitter patter.

This special Elf will have a multitouch display like the iphone. So you will be able to slide your finger across the screen to run commands and interact with the device in the same manner as Apple’s much hyped iphone

HTC Assimilates Dopod

HTC is already the 800lb gorilla in the Windows Mobile hardware space - they're solidifying that position by snapping up Dopod. The main asset seem to be Dopod's ability to distribute phones across Asia. This also helps HTC with the longstanding plans to actually brand their devices with "htc" instead of letting every carrier under the sun rename their gear. I'm looking forward to the day when a given HTC device has just two names - the prototype and the final - instead of the mysterious constellation of names most HTC phones have now.

[HTC] announced today that it has signed an acquisition agreement with Dopod International, one of the leading PDA Phone and smartphone distributors in Asia, to purchase the assets of nine Dopod subsidiaries

A Tip'o'the Hat to Smartphone Thoughts, who note that the FCC has just approved the HTC Libra, which is the CDMA version of the coveted HTC Vox. HTC Offering Free WM6 Upgrades to Carriers in June

Italian Language site solopalmeri had an enterprising user in the forums find this HTC Europe FAQ (PDF) detailing their plans regarding Windows Mobile 6. The short of it is that HTC is making upgrades free for the following devices:

HTC Advantage
HTC TyTN
HTC S620
HTC P4350
HTC P3300

The bad news is it's still up to the carriers in Europe to decide to offer them. Those who have purchased these devices direct from HTC will be able to get the upgrades, free, sometime in June. No word yet on what will make it over to the US (besides the already announced T-Mobile Dash, Treo 750, Cingular 8525, and Samsung Blackjack upgrades), but it looks good. If HTC is willing to do the legwork, I don't think it's too much to ask for carriers here to give us the update.

HTC Advantage (Athena) Coming to the US

Two bits of good news about this UMPC/PocketPC hybrid device. One: Engadget reports we'll see it here in the US under HTC's own brand name:

Another from HTC we saw coming, but that's still a pleasant surprise: HTC's Advantage (codename Athena) will in fact be making it Stateside! Noice, but even better, HTC will be releasing the Advantage (now camera-free) under its own brand.

Read: HTC Advantage coming to US... under the HTC brand - Engadget Mobile

Two: Coolsmartphone reports that it's going to rock Windows Mobile 6.

What do you get if you add Windows Mobile 6 to the HTC Advantage X7500 ? Well, you get the... err.. HTC Advantage X7501.

Read: CoolSmartPhone.com - Windows Mobile 6 + HTC X7500 = HTX 7501!

You know what I'm excited about: not having to report that WM6 is installed, because no more WM5 devices are coming anymore. That day is coming very, very soon, perhaps it's today?

CTIA Day 1: Device Ogling

Day One-Half, technically, where we go to a press-only event that preceded CTIA proper. What happened at this pre-show show? Lots of fun ogling some of the latest and greatest coming out soon. Read on for impressions of the HTC Vox, the Samsung i760, and the Motorola Q9.

HTC Vox

First things first: the HTC Vox is as hot as you've imagined. It's tiny, it's actually smaller overall than a lot of high end feature phones (Like the Sony Ericsson W810, just barely), with a great bright screen that has very high density.

Sadly, the keyboard was just a little disappointing, but that's mainly because I wasn't used to it. It's off-center from the screen (which is obvious if you click on the thumbnails above), which is a disconcerting. I could get used to it, though. Sincerely, I could get very used to it. I want this phone. More good news - although there aren't any official carrier announcements in the US (yet!), it is being released in a CDMA/EVDO version on Telus in Canada. This means there's at least a chance this little wonder could be available on every major carrier in the US.

Motorola Q9

The Motorola Q9 is an improvement in every way over the original Motorola Q. Especially, especially in the thumbboard department. I've written before about being disappointed in the MotoQ's thumbboard, and although the Q9 still doesn't have a delete/backspace key on the main QWERTY board itself (for shame), the feel and tactile quality of the new thumbboard is so great I can easily say it's second only to the Treo 750 in the world of Windows Mobile thumbboards. Better than any slider I've used, too -- it's great.

Samsung i760

There's not much to say here: If you like the HTC Vox but don't think you can give up the touchscreen, then you want the Samsung i760. I'm still a fan of their neat little 5-way next to phonepad, and the thumbboard itself is comfortable and easy to use.

Assorted Bits

We spoke to Yahoo about their plans for Yahoo Go. It currently only supports the "tall format" smartphone versions of WM5 (320h x 240w, like the Cingluar 3125). New formats that support other screen resolutions are "coming soon." Also notable is that it doesn't appear that the application does push email any more (it did in the first beta), mainly due to the fact that it no longer integrates with Pocket Outlook but keeps! your! Yahoo! email! within! the Yahoo! Go! application! On the bright side, you can set it to update every so often and it will update everything from Flickr to news to weather to email. So that's nice.

At HTC's booth we learned the above Telus / HTC Vox in CDMA format tidbit and got to take a gander at the HTC Advantage - which I like but don't find especially compelling overall. Big screens are nice, but big devices are not.

We also took a peek at the HTC Artemis, which has a combination trackball and a jogdial-type scroller around it. All-in-all, a great device for folks who don't care about having a thumbboard. If you know any of those people, I'd like to meet them and ask them what exactly is going on in that head of theirs. US availability: unknown.
