humor

Believe it or not, there are some settings where you shouldn't have your smartphone around. Places like a doctors appointment, job interview, or court hearing are fairly obvious places where you should leave it in the car or at least put it on silent. So what happens when the professional across the table breaks this rule, especially if it's your own? In the case of a Michigan judge, you hold yourself in contempt. No, this not the Onion.

The last time we checked in on Windows Phone Central forum member Nisse Tuta, he was making beautiful videos in honor of the Lumia 920 and also humorously testing out its wireless charging capabilities.

Now Nisse has a new video available that goes through some various cases for the flagship Nokia phone and we have to admit, it had us in stitches.  Whether you need a big solid case, an official Nokia one (CP-600) or the ultimate day-to-day one, you’ll want to take a moment from you day an appreciate Nisse’s humor.

Speaking of, we should just hire Nisse to make us videos on the Lumia 920 as clearly he has a knack for it.

Microsoft has published a rather humorous advertisement on its YouTube channel, which illustrates just how simple Windows 8 is. Consumers are shown to be hovering around a Windows counter with a handful of demonstration PC units available.

An employee approaches said members of public to enquire if they require any assistance, which leads to a child to pop out with a stool to run the weary traveller through the delights of the new operating system. The video is recorded in Portugal and is in the native language with subtitles.

Chuck Norris Facts is one of about thirty six some odd Windows Phone apps related to the famed action hero. Chuck Norris Facts stands out because it includes some humorous wallpapers and  has landed on the Windows Phone Store's New and Rising list.

The Chuck Norris Facts app contains over three thousand facts about Mr. Norris and dozens of wallpapers. Wallpapers that can be pulled up at random or you can choose your favorite to remain in the background. Wallpapers can also be saved to your Windows Phone for use as lockscreen wallpapers. Just go to the settings, find your favorite background image, tap/hold on it and choose Save Image.

Apple's iPad and the new iPad Mini aren't the only devices that can play relaxing tunes using an on-screen keyboard. A Lumia 900 can also fire up a piano and enable users to create some inuitive tracks. An iPad Mini advertisement has made use of an attractive and effective melody (Heart and Soul), which has been performed using a Windows Phone.

An interesting video has been published on the Microsoft Norge YouTube channel, which takes place on October 26th in Oslo, Norway. The video shows a team setting up a stage for the popular Norwegian electro rock band Datarock. This platform for the band to perform on is hidden behind a false wall on a street. The band, along with volunteers, will then surprise the general public.

Ever wondered what Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Steven Sinofsky would sound like auto-tuned? We sure have, and so has Justin Angel, Principal Engineer for Windows Phone experience at Nokia, who has created a short montage of clips from the Surface and Windows 8 event.

It’s never fun to take things too seriously, which is why we like this video of a purported Surface unboxing. Performed with a mock Russian accent, the video takes a jab at the “old” Microsoft (or rather what some people still perceive as being Redmond’s problem: clunky, non-working software and hardware).

We won’t say too much more on this because it speaks for itself. But we definitely got a chuckle out of it.

Head of Windows Steven Sinofsky managed to take the Microsoft Surface out for a spin, and not in the way you might have assumed. Showing off just how durable the product is, Sinofsky took the Windows 8 tablet, which has just been made available for pre-order, and turned it into a skateboard. Yes, the head of Windows was literally riding the Surface.

What appears to be an extension attached to the underbody of the Surface tablet reveals four bright green wheels. We're not entirely sure how far Sinofsky managed to skate, or if it would survive a journey with someone of a larger stature, but it's a humorous example of just how well built the Surface Windows 8 tablets are. The company previously published a video showing some choices that were made through its development.

President Barack Obama has been known to be a die-hard BlackBerry fan for years now, even as the Waterloo company is scrambling for its life to stay afloat. While he can wait for BlackBerry 10 to arrive sometime next year, we think he should start considering other options. (After all, that platform won’t have 100,000 apps, right?)

In a somewhat humorous moment this past weekend, the President started to use an iPhone, presumably either as a backup, transition device or just someone else’s. Either way, he evidently wasn’t at all familiar with neither the phone nor the OS and he scrambled a bit when trying to dial out.

Rage against the Galaxy

To close out this exciting, Windows Phone 8-filled week, The Nokia Blog managed to get their hands on a few more pics of the Finns crashing Samsung’s party this week at IFA in Berlin.

Previously we had what seemed like a single person with a sign but as it turns out, it was a small crowd of at least 6 people with placards and smiles. What’s more, you can tell Samsung’s security was not to impressed with the brazen display, pulling the signs from the Astroturfers.

While silly jesting, it still pales when compared to what RIM tried to pull off with Apple back in April but clearly Nokia has a bone to pick with Samsung.

See more photos at the Nokia Blog.

As things are heating up on this Labor Day weekend, Nokia appears to be still having some fun with Samsung—or at least that is one interpretation of the oddly placed image above.

Appearing on Nokia’s Facebook page, the photo shows two toy dump trucks—one offloading coins, the other carrying away a Lumia—with the caption ‘Which do you prefer?’.

So why is it funny? It appears to be an inside tech joke that made the rounds last week regarding the Apple v Samsung trial.

Dare to find out how old you look?

We're rather familiar with Mendzapp on windows Phone. The small UK student start-up brought us both Travelnapp and YuleTile (charity focused Christmas app), which were both unique and interesting projects. We especially love seeing indie developers advance and create more immersive and better looking apps, which is exactly what these guys are doing. We met up with James from Mendzapp at the previous WPUG for a good ol' pint and a chatter about his current projects and what's next in the pipeline.

James recently got in touch with us about a new app called VizAge, which is basically an app that uses face recognition technology to calculate an estimation of one's age. It really is as humorous as it sounds. Whether you're on your own and wish to quickly see how old the system believes you to be, or you're out with friends and decide to see who looks older than their actual age, VizAge provides ample fun in such a small and simple app.

Siri, the personal assistant found on the iPhone 4S, has been making headlines for Apple today, but for all the wrong reasons. The image above explains what's going on better than any words in this article. Should you happen to ask Siri "what's the best cell phone ever?", you'll be greeted with a surprising response. Not only does Siri choose a device that's not an Apple product, but it chooses the Lumia 900 Windows Phone.

This result is produced by taking the mobile phone that's rated the highest by consumers and the cyan AT&T Lumia 900 just so happens to fit the bill. Siri found the above answer by using Wolfram Alpha, which lists the Windows Phone when visitors type in the same query. The launch of the Lumia 900 was met by an extremely high level of satisfaction from customers who purchased the handset, regardless of the issues that appeared.

We gave it a shot with Ask Ziggy to see what the Windows Phone Siri-like assistant thought of all this. Unfortunately, it appeared to be slightly smarter than Siri with leading us to a Bing SERP listing articles covering "top ten mobile phones", etc. Smart move Zig-meister. Smart move.

Does anyone find it even remotely humorous how the Windows Phone community (and tech media) have jumped on this story? At the end of the day, Apple can take something away from this - Siri has proven to be relatively accurate.

The My Verizon Mobile app has received a makeover, but not the type of makeover that improves visual appeal. With the recent Verizon HTC Trophy update, which was warmly welcomed, the carrier also rolled out an update to their Windows Phone app. Should you enter the app you might be surprised by what you're presented with.

As one can see in the above image, something's gone terribly wrong. The reviews on the Marketplace are heading downhill as one could imagine, so if you're a frequent user and enjoy an aesthetically pleasing experience, we advise you stay away from the app update.

Nokia and AT&T have gone forward with another "Beta Test" commercial. The controversial ad campaign started off my mocking the iPhone (those videos have since been pulled) and have now moved on to teasing how all other smartphones look the same.

In their latest TV blip, a smarmy gentleman is seen proclaiming how his phone defines him as an individual. Moments later a nerdy girl runs up squawking how she has the same phone.

It certainly elicited a slight chuckle from us and it goes to the heart of how a lot of us feel about Android and iPhones, specifically that they're not unique anymore due to their domination in the market. Here in New York City having an iPhone is about as original as being a Yankee's fan, so pushing the line that Nokia's are "beautifully different" could work.

Heck, even we've been critical of the Black-Slab™ phenomena going back to 2009 which may be why we're so enamored with Nokia's Cyan and Glossy White Lumia 900's. (Bonus: the Glossy White Lumia 900 peeks out at the end of this new ad for the first time).

Of course attacking your opponent, even without naming them, can be risky. However, we do think this is one safe area for Nokia to spear their competition as the Finnish company has always been ahead on design. And this type of marketing works. Just look at Nokia's "blown away" campaign and the reaction from Samsung. The company is making waves, my friends and that is effective advertising.

By the way, we're not sure why those original Beta Test iPhone videos were pulled, though we imagine it was due to negative feedback. Luckily, you can still view them here, here and here.

Pocket Meme, developed by our own RogueCode (the brains behind the Ffffound app), is now available on the Marketplace. Pocket Meme enables users to enjoy their daily dose of meme action (from QuickMeme.com) with most popular images being displayed upon launch. An entire list of memes is present with a filter for more convenient access.

Once selecting a single meme, the user is greeted by popular and upcoming images for that meme only. Selecting an image reveals the title and three tiles. The first is for a full size view, the second for saving the image to the Windows Phone, and third for sharing via SMS, email and integrated social networks.

The UI of Pocket Meme is both intuitive and beautiful, with a 3D cube to generate even more randomness. Memes and searches can be pinned to the home screen for quick access and viewing statistics are available that can be published to the social sphere.

Pocket Meme really is a superb app should you be a massive fan of such questionable content. In a future update live tile integration will be implemented, so stay tuned for more features. Check out the video below for some hands-on visual action.

You can download Pocket Meme from the Marketplace for $0.99 (£0.79) with a free trial available.

Nokia has been aggressively marketing their Lumia family of Windows Phones on a massive global scale, with events sporting 4D projections, augmented reality experiences, and live music performances the manufacturer appears to have extraordinarily deep pockets for the marketing budget, something that Microsoft needs from an OEM with its new mobile platform.

As well as Nokia we've seen Microsoft pushing hard with carriers and the famous Smoked by Windows Phone campaign. Following on from this successful array of stunts, Nokia has kicked off "Blown away by Lumia" in India, which hasn't gone down too well with Samsung, who is backing the Galaxy family of devices. The Finnish manufacturer also took to the streets in the UK with the "Lumia Challenge", sharing the same concept.

Back to the "Blown Away by Lumia" campaign in India, check out the following video, which is one of many adverts Nokia has where competitor handsets are literally 'blown away' by Lumia Windows Phones.

As with the Smoked by Windows Phone challenges, contestants have to try and best the Windows Phone (a Lumia handset in this case) with general smartphone tasks, such as taking a photo and uploading it to Facebook. Which ever device completes the task first wins. Should the contestant lose, they have to hold up a sign that reads: 'My phone just got blown away by the Nokia Lumia'.

Nokia explains the challenges were validated by Nielsen, with Nokia India Director of Marketing, Viral Oza, commenting the following on the accusations of unethical campaigning:

"The Lumia 800 emerged as a clear winner by winning 94% of the total 104 challenges timed by Nielsen. This challenge has not been created to target competition but to highlight the social media capabilities of the device."

Samsung, however, shares a different view and an Indian spokesperson stated that the campaign is "clearly unethical". The complaint is based on the view that the video clips Nokia has uploaded mostly target the Korean manufacturer's popular devices. It's a fierce battle between the two handset makers in India so it'll be interesting to see how this plays off in the future, especially with Samsung's Windows Phone lineup.

What do you guys think of Samsung's claims?

The Smartphone Beta Test has been running since the birth of the smartphone, well technically it hasn't but it's a pretty neat marketing campaign from Nokia for the U.S. We witnessed a website (www.smartphonebetatest.com) being created with a bunch of videos published to poke fun at some competitor handset issues.

Now the Smartphone Beta Test website has been updated with more interactive content, videos and information on the AT&T Lumia 900, which is launching across the U.S. Cue "Operation Rolling Thunder", Nokia's plan of a attack for the states, which will see the manufacturer driving forward advertising not only for the Lumia handsets, but for Windows Phone too.

Prepare yourselves for some effective Nokia marketing. For a taster, check out the beauty of social integration and live tiles in Windows Phone in the humorous commercial below. Nokia is clearly on the attack here at other smartphones as well as how they can negatively impact our lives by being unreliable - something the manufacturer looks to change with Windows Phone.
