Nokia Lumia 620 up for pre-order in India

One big benefit of the Windows Phone operating system is its ability to perform with aplomb on both low-end and high-end hardware. It can satisfy power users who always early adopters of the latest and greatest technology or be an affordable choice for emerging markets. That’s why when a device like the Nokia Lumia 620 goes up for preorder in India we can add another checklist towards a stronger ecosystem.

Nokia released a statement today saying that it had sent a "letter of objection" to the Indian government following a January raid on its facility in Chennai over alleged back taxes totaling $545 million. The Finnish tech superpower firmly denied the allegations and said:

"The actions of the income tax authorities in Chennai are excessive, unacceptable and inconsistent with Indian standards of fair play and governance. We do not see any merit in any of the claims, and are ready to defend ourselves vigorously."

It's been a rather good start of the year for Nokia. The company has made actual profit, thanks to intense cost reduction and growing business, as well as its Lumia family of Windows Phones performing rather well in a number of markets. The company is pushing hard and not only is it attracting new customers, but existing consumers with Nokia hardware are behind the company and products they own, thanks to great support and software offerings.

Now a report has come in that Nokia is the most trusted brand in India, beating Samsung and Sony to the punch. India, along with Asia and Russia have been targeted for Lumia Windows Phones and progress is being made, slowly but surely. Both high-end and low-end devices have been launched in said markets to take full advantage of consumer groups.

They say copying is a form of flattery, so both HTC and Microsoft should be feeling so with this low-end device that has appeared on Indian Times. The device, a Lemon T109 Dual SIM Mobile Watch, appears to be rocking a Windows Phone UI, but isn't actually a handset running Microsoft's OS. Odd, right?

Nokia has today announced The Dark Knight Rises limited edition Lumia 800 in India. The unique Windows Phone will be a steal with only 200 being made available for retail. The limited edition smartphone sports a laser etched Batman logo on the rear of the device, and will be made available from Nokia's website mid-July.

Reportedly priced at Rs. 24,999, which shares the same tag as the listed standard Lumia 800, it appears to be a solid deal for those interested in the franchise. As with The Dark Knight Rises Nokia Windows Phones launched elsewhere, the lucky owner will be able to take advantage of exclusive content, as well as an interactive game. Lumia owners can also download and install the exclusive app from the Marketplace.

If the Lumia 800 (or the Batman edition) isn't your cup of tea, the manufacturer also revealed the launch of the Lumia 610, which is priced at Rs. 12,999. Unfortunately, we're still waiting for the Lumia 900, and with Windows Phone 8 ("Apollo") drawing ever closer, it's looking less likely that many will choose to adopt such a late release.

According to a press release sent out by Nokia for a press event in New Delhi on July 6th, we could well be seeing the Dark Knight Windows Phones heading to India. BGR India reports that multiple sources have confirmed Nokia could be looking to launch the Lumia 900 in the country, which could sport a Dark Knight version if the above invite is anything to go by.

BGR also reports that Nokia could also be releasing the Lumia 610, the low-end Windows Phone "Tango" smartphone. As well as new hardware, the manufacturer is expected to be unveiling the Nokia Music Store in India for Lumia Windows Phones, including the already available Lumia 710 and 800. To finish off, speculation also suggest a Mix Radio app could well be on the way.

Nokia India announced today at the Nokia Strategy Summit in Chennai that its Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 handsets will be coming to India sometime in Q3 of this year. The pair of Lumias will fulfill the desires of both those looking for a high-end powerhouse phone, in the Lumia 900, and those in the market for something more economical, the toned-down 610. Both phones run Windows Phone Refresh (aka Tango), but are much different in the hardware department. While the 4.3-inch Lumia 900 packs a 1.4 GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 8 mega-pixel and 16GB of storage, the 610 has a 3.7-inch LCD, 800MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 8GB of storage and a 5MP camera. Neither a concrete arrival date, nor pricing, were revealed for either device.

Another announcement that came out of today's Nokia Strategy Summit was the mid-June arrival of the 808 PureView, which was originally revealed back at MWC 2012. The 808, if you recall, is the Symbian-powered phone that is equipped with a 41-megapixel camera. It was originally expected to hit shelves in May, but was delayed for unknown reasons. Nokia has put up a website to pre-book the 808 PureView, but has not made any pricing known for that either. It's an odd move for a device that is so close to its release date. The 808 runs a 1.3GHz CPU, 512MB RAM and 16GB of storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card.

The next few months should be pretty exciting for those in India itching for a new Windows Phone device, or a phone with a monster camera hanging off the back of it. We will keep you posted if any further release dates or prices make their way out into the Ether.

Nokia has got hold of Priyanka Chopra, an established Indian actress, singer and former Miss World to host some videos for the "Blown Away by Lumia" Windows Phone challenge. Just like the Smoked by Windows Phone campaign, Chopra challenges participants at common tasks to see which smartphone is faster.

The Blown Away by Lumia challenges have come under fire since Nokia began uploading the video clips to sharing websites, with Samsung publicly announcing the company believes Nokia's aggressive campaign is "unethical", but we've also seen some humorous reactions, including a girlfriend of a losing participant.

Check out the other two videos after the break.

According to a MWC12 announcement made by Nokia India’s marketing director, Viral Oza, Nokia "will be launching Lumia 610 soon in the Indian market and at an affordable price.” It turns out that the price for the affordable Tango-equipped handset will be Rs 11,000 (about $220), which is almost a third cheaper than its current Windows Phone brethren, the Samsung Omnia W and Nokia Lumia 710 and about half as much as most Android phones.  Though the Lumia 610 will be running Tango, a less feature-rich version of Windows Phone, it is still nothing to sneeze at, sporting a 3.7-inch screen, 8GB memory, and a 5 megapixel camera.

India has historically been a huge market for Nokia, so it makes a whole lot of sense for them to offer a sensibly-priced Windows Phone option in order to hold on to that.  Of course, it's just one front in the battle for Nokia to regain its one-time dominance, since lost to competitors like Samsung.
