India

Seems almost silly posting supposed renders of a phone that will be announced in less than 24 hours here at Mobile World Congress, but lets get on with it.

The latest stems around the Lumia 610, a low-end phone for emerging markets e.g. India which is expected to help push Nokia (and Windows Phone) deep into areas where Apple and even Android have trouble due to rising costs. The 610, according to BGR will have:

  • 3.2" screen
  • 3MP camera
  • Cost Rs 11,000 (Euro 175)
  • 256MB of RAM

Going further that image above is reportedly what it looks like. To which we all say "sure, why not?". Nokia is certainly capable of making this phone and "610" screams budget phone as the higher the numbers go, the more high end they are and vice versa for Nokia. All we can say is lets wait till tomorrow and we'll probably even see one in real life instead of shady Twitter accounts, m'kay?

Microsoft Store India has come under attack by hackers raiding under the banner of 'Evil Shadow Team', WPSauce has reported. The website was defaced yesterday with the above image replacing access, which was achieved by redirecting visitors to a file the team uploaded -- evil.html. The message is clear from the attack: "Unsafe system will be baptized."

For now the website is offline, presumably while Microsoft investigates what exactly went wrong and suggesting the software giant has regained control.

"The Microsoft Store India is currently unavailable. Microsoft is working to restore access as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Customers of the online store have been strongly urged to change their passwords once the site comes back online as Quasar Media, the online marketing agency that maintains the website, decided it would be a great idea to store user credentials and personal information in plain text - an obvious insecure practice.

While one could argue that it's in the interest of the customers to know that their details are not being stored securely, another could counter with stating that the attack, which has no known motive, was not required.

Nokia Lumia 710 gets price drop in India

As if the Nokia Lumia 710 wasn't already cheap enough, the phone has received a nice price cut of about 3300 Rs to 15699. Available through Flipkart.com now, the 3.7" device with a ClearBlack LCD a 1.4GHz CPU is quickly becoming the most affordable smartphone on the market.

Of course, we could wonder if the price drop is because Nokia wants to be more competitive or perhaps the 710 is not selling as well--hard to say at this point. But for those interested in a new smartphone, it seems a great deal.

Now that the Lumia 800 is going big world wide, including India (see earlier "flash mob"), we can see the fruits of their advertising campaign. Evidently, Jet Airways had made a deal with Nokia to paint their plans with the Lumia colors and Nokia banner.

Not a bad look, if we say so ourselves.

Once again, we can see the power of Nokia to turn heads and get their hardware noticed. We can't see what they have in store for the States.

We've witnessed the marketing power of the Nokia "The Amazing Everyday" campaign throughout Europe, and the public in New York and Paris have had the opportunity to stand in awe at the sight of a giant Windows Phone. Now it seems Nokia wishes to push its way through India, launching the Lumia 710 and 800 today, with a planned marketing campaign - and it's big.

To give an idea as to how massive this campaign will be, check out the list below:

  • Impromptu dance performance in Mumbai with free food and drink.
  • Luxury helicopter ride for consumers in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
  • Exclusive premiere for pre-bookers with tennis star Sania Mirza at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon.
  • Musical event, and artificial snow zones recreated at certain PVR outlets, in Delhi.
  • Toll exemption for more than 15,000 vehicles on the DND freeway, connecting Delhi and Noida.
  • Salt Lake will feature a "winter wonderland" created with artificial snow in Kolkata.

As well as the above list, we'll be excited to see an "aggressive" promotion and advertising strategy being put into effect. We've already had a flash mob performance at malls in five cities, so it'll be interesting to see how the manufacturer expands on this throughout the country. The Lumia 710 and 800 can be picked up for Rs 18,999 ($360) and Rs 29,999 ($570) respectively.

We've received word that HTC are kicking off a marketing campaign in India. An HTC Radar advertisement was spotted (see above) in a recent edition of the Gujarat Samachar, a popular Gujarati newspaper. The country recently launched Windows Phone 7.5 with a storm, unveiling the HTC Radar, Samsung Omnia W and Acer Allegro. It's good to see advertising reaching out to all regions.

Nokia has announced that both of their new Lumia handsets, the 710 and the 800, will be coming to India.  Though no specific date was given, they did say that both should be available come mid-December.  Details were also scarce on how much each device would run or which carriers would offer them.  Vodaphone is taking orders for the Lumia 800 in the UK, so it wouldn't be crazy to think they will be game to offer the same in India as well.

Both the 710 and 800 are pretty comparable, with 1.4GHz processors, 512MB RAM, and run Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) on 3.7" AMOLED screens.  However, the Lumia 800 trumps the 710's 8GB storage and 5MP camera with its own 16GB and 8MP Carl Zeiss camera, while the more playful 710 has interchangeable back plates of varying colors.

Microsoft has launched a new website "I love you guys", which highlights the social functionality and integration of Windows Phone. This marketing effort is a follow up on their recent launch in India last month. Visitors are able to connect to their Facebook account to pull down friends and organise parties among other events.

The above intro video provides a humorous look on how friends can be terrible liars, via a HTC Radar. Anyone else notice a slight confusion in terms of UI?

HTC Mozart owners residing in India are receiving an update to be able to use Internet Sharing, according to a report at welovewp.hk. Aviraj Ajhekar, an employee at Microsoft India, has published an article stating his Mozart received a firmware update and was then able to tether.

Unfortunately, welovewp.hk  reports that a similar update received in Hong Kong doesn't enable the feature, which further confirms the final decision being up to carriers. We've recently covered ThreeUK allowing Internet sharing on the Samsung Omnia 7, as well as LG Germany.

Have you received a firmware update that enables this WiFi feature?

App Hub for China and Marketplace for India

The Windows Phone team has published some exciting news for both China and India. With India finally getting some handsets being made available this month (the HTC Radar, Samsung Omnia W and Acer Allegro), owners of these devices will be able to purchase and download apps from the Marketplace. Speaking of the Marketplace, improved search has been introduced with developers being able to tie up to five keywords per app or game to increase reach in searches.

China unfortunately still has no Marketplace, but now has App Hub coverage for developers who reside in the country to put their talent to good use with submitting games and apps to the Marketplace. For those who are still awaiting App Hub availability, remember that Microsoft has the Global Publisher Program that will be able to help.

Nokia Windows Phones heading to India Q1 2012

According to an interview with the Economic Times, D Shivakumar, Nokia India managing director, has said that the Finnish manufacturer is looking to launch their first Windows Phone handset in India by March 2012. For now it seems Nokia is focusing on Europe to kick-start their advancement before tackling the US and Asian markets.

"Work for the Windows phone is on track and it would be launched in the first quarter of next (calendar) year."

Not long to wait. This goes with Nokia taking on Telstra, but we're unsure of a time frame for launch. Let's not forget that lucky developers in London will be receiving the soon-to-be announced device.

We reported a few days ago that Microsoft India was set to officially launch Windows Phone there and sure enough, that day has come.

Over at the site I Love Windows Phone, Abhishek Baxi live blogged the event where all the details were revealed. The first device to launch there will be the HTC Radar, which will fetch for Rs 23,990, followed by the Samsung Omnia W  (Rs 19,900) and Acer Allegro in November, all with Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" on board.. Not bad for a launch selection at all, but no word on Nokia at this time.

In addition, two localized apps were shown off: Times of India and SnapDeal, which should make some folks happy to have those on board.

Although phones such as the Dell Venue Pro and the HD7 have been available in India for sometime, official support for the OS, including the Marketplace, has not been available. Now, come October 12th, Microsoft looks to be kicking off the Marketplace and other services in India for the first time, opening up the gates for HTC, Samsung and LG to start seriously pushing their devices in what is an admittedly huge market.

The news comes way of an official press conference to be held in New Dehli on October 12th. Evidently Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India, will also be there, making this quite a big event.

Dell has been completely MIA from the Mango-madness of the last few months. It all started back in May when Microsoft started leaving Dell off of any list of OEMs who are developing Windows Phones. Speculation at the time suggested that Dell had dropped out of the smartphone biz and were withdrawing and Windows Phone plan. Some of this became evident when the price of an unlocked Venue Pro dropped to $300 and AT&T seemed to have put the phone on the back, back burner.

Now, for what it's worth, which may not be much. the Dell Wrigley appears to be coming to Inida soon, listed on the sites Mobile Dekho, My India Guide and featured in a brief overview on the site Idea Marketers. The device is listed as having an 8MP camera, 4" screen and features TDMA, CDMA and GSM support. Price is listed at about Rs. 30,000 (~$600).

This exact same device with similar specs did show up on our leaked Dell road-map, lending some credence to the idea. Still, we have to ask, Dell...where are you? While the Venue Pro had a rough start, it turned out to be a solid Windows Phone and we sure hope to see more from Dell in 2011 and 2012. On the other hand, this could be an erroneous listing, so we'll just have to remain skeptical for a bit.

Thanks, Jc_Agga, for the tip!

In what looks like a big move for Microsoft, they have finally launched their Zune Marketplace in India, opening a potentially huge market to Windows Phone.

Windows Phone Sauce (who we are gathering are based in India) have been able to confirm that the Marketplace is live and kicking, accepting payments in Rupees (see screenshot above). Microsoft themselves have not made any official announcement, so this still may be a soft launch for the marketplace as they test the waters, so to speak.

Either way, this is a good sign as this may be the beginning of Microsoft's larger push into regions not previously covered by Windows Phone. Currently, the HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro are being sold in India, even though MS didn't officially offer any support there, until today that is.

Back on February 21st, we ran a report about the Dell Venue Pro launching in India with copy/paste support. Flash forward two weeks and now we have some visual confirmation that this is indeed the case. FoneArena is not only reporting it but they have photos, OS version info (v7.0.7355.0) and even a full video you see above, showing it all in action. Note that this DVP is running the same OS build as some Samsungs and the Verizon HTC Trophy, while the Sprint Arrive runs the later build 7389. Currently, the differences between the builds are unknown.

Of course with reports that NoDo is coming as early as Monday for some, this is less exciting than it was two weeks ago. Combined with reports that Samsung users who send their phones in for servicing are getting the latest update pre-installed on return and it makes sense: OEMs have had this update for quite awhile already and they're ready to ship.

HTC HD Mini available in India

HTC's chopped down version of the HD, the HD Mini, has made its way to India. HTC has announced the availability of the Mini at a selling price of Rs 23,490 ($520 US).

The Mini was recently sited passing through the FCC and there is still hope that a U.S. carrier will pick up this Windows Phone. There is also an outside chance it will become available in the U.S. as an unlocked phone.

If the latter is true, maybe the pricing point will come down just a little before reaching the States.

No surprise with Microsoft calling for December/January release time-frames for WM6.5 updates that there will a ton of announcements in the next few weeks.

Recently we got wind that India's Touch Diamond 2 had been blessed with their official update (available here), which could please a few million users we suppose.

Likewise, Orange has released their WM6.5 upgrade for their Touch Pro 2 (available here).

Finally, Australia's open-channel Touch Pro 2 is also eligible for their WM6.5 upgrade. Open-channel is down-under speak for non-branded versions aka not on Telstra. Get that update here.

While having cooked ROMs is a blast, using official released base ROMs is even better for stability, plus not everyone has time for customs.  So if you're one of the few who needs these (and you do), go get 'em.
