Nokia has announced that both the Lumia 720 and Lumia 520 are launching in Italy. Both the cheapest Nokia Windows Phone and mid-range Lumia smartphone will be aggressively priced and marketed to further push the platform in the market. Windows Phone has done well in Italy, according to previous market share reports so the two new devices should do well. But how much will the Windows Phone 8 devices cost?

The Samsung ATIV S is making its way around Europe and beyond, but the 32GB version is yet to be made available, leaving the 16GB as the only option for consumers who are looking to adopt Windows Phone 8 early. The Windows Phone (sporting the latter amount of storage) was previously delayed in Italy until this very month.

We previously looked at the handset when it was made available here in the UK (again, 16GB), but Expansys in Italy have now listed the 32GB variant of the ATIV S. Unfortunately pricing is yet to be unveiled for the new version. Not only that, but the 16GB units are reportedly discounted in preparation for the more advanced variant.

While Samsung was the first out the gate to publicly announce their Windows Phone 8 device, the ATIV S is definitely taking it's time to come to various markets. The Italian market was due to see the ATIV S in November which was eventually pushed back to sometime this month.

Yesterday evening, Huawei presented an arsenal of Android products to attending journalists and bloggers at an event in Rome, Italy. The HTC 8X, Nokia Lumias and Samsung ATIV S are to be pushed by the carrier TIM in Italy. The latter is priced at €599 and is subsidised by TIM on the 300 €20/month plan or €10/month with the All Inclusive 700/1500 plan. Both are 30 month contracts, which is a little over the two year deals we are generally used to in Europe.

Details of features included in Windows Phone 7.8 have been revealed on Facebook, according to a post by Microsoft Italy. While Microsoft has released Windows Phone 8, the company's next update for customers with legacy hardware is still on the horizon, and we're unsure what's included. So what has been mentioned by Microsoft Italy?

The Lumia 920 has gradually become available for pre-order through retailers and the like, but we've not yet been able to confirm globally what carriers will be stocking Windows Phones, except for those who have made the information publicly available. As for the number of pre-orders that have taken place, well ... that's another piece of information that we don't possess.

Fortunately, NokiaPowerUser has noticed some positive signs on both the French Phone House and Italian NStore websites. According to Phone House's top 50 mobile phones chart the Lumia 920 is the champion, and at NStore the Windows Phone is no longer available (sold out).

It's coming. Windows Phone 8 is coming.

Microsoft plans to hold an event in Milan on October 29th for the unveiling of the next version of Windows Phone. The company is slowly reaching the release date for its mobile platform and we're set to see exactly what's what (as well as hardware pricing and availability) at the end of the month - just in time for the holiday season.

Nokia’s Italy contingent announced not too long ago that the Lumia 920 will be available for pre-order at the €599 price point and coming in November.

While we still don’t have a firm release date to add to that, we can now direct you to NStore.it, which we’re told is the official Nokia online store for that country. For a deposit of €99, you can reserve your own 920, but only in white or black (insert sad trombone).

We’re not sure if that’s a better deal than what you can get through your carrier (H3G, Telecom Italia, Vodafone or Wind) but if unlocked an non-hassle is your thing, then you may want to give it some consideration.

You can head over to NStore.it’s dedicated pre-order page to get the ball rolling. Thanks, Mirko S., for the tip

Kantar Worldpanel has published its report based on latest smartphone sales data, which reveals Windows Phone seriously challenging RIM for third place in Europe with low-end devices such as the Lumia 610 driving sales in key markets.

Low-end Windows Phone growth rates representing multiple markets within Europe have been provided by Kantar. Italy tops the charts with an increase in market share of 6.6%, while France comes in second at 3.5% and Great Britan is third with 2.3%. Nokia has taken the Lumia Challenge to Italy. The Windows Phone marketing campaign -- think Smoked by Windows Phone -- challenges participants to see if their competitor smartphone can beat a Lumia 900 at common tasks. Ranging anywhere from taking a photo and uploading to Facebook to locating a nearby restaurant, the challenges are generally won by Windows Phone thanks to the level of integration present.

Participants came wielding a variety of devices, including Samsung, HTC and the iPhone. Nokia has been extraordinarily successful in its Dare to Live campaign, which is touring the UK. We took a look at the results at the half-way marker and were able to reveal that Windows Phones were winning majority of challenges.

Here's hoping that success is seen in these marketing stunts across the world. At the very least, this is a strong attempt to rebuild the Nokia brand as a Windows Phone OEM.

Nokia's Camera Extras for the Lumia Windows Phones has been available in the US for a while now. While the initial release was in the U.S., Indian and Chines markets, we knew it was only a matter of time before other markets would get the camera app.  Such is the case now with Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy (and probably other markets) where Windows Phone shutterbugs in these Countries can enjoy the extra camera settings.

It was a few weeks ago when Nokia and Microsoft announced that Bing Maps would be getting a bit of a backend overhaul. Specifically in two areas: new color codes for traffic and more detail on back roads.

Perhaps even more importantly, some countries which previously didn't have access to mapping data would be getting the feature in a timed rollout. All in all, 24 countries were being added to the list including Italy and the UK.

We can at least verify that those latter two now have traffic as an option on their devices. Users can simply launch Maps and tap the three-dots on the lower menu. There, the "enable traffic" option should now be available.

It's great to see such a feature comes to other regions as it's something many of us have taken for granted since Windows Phone 7 came out in 2010. If you've noticed traffic added to any of these other countries, sound off in comments: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or UAE.

Nokia's Lumia Windows Phone now in mini-size

We all love those free Xbox Avatar Gadgets, especially when they're Windows Phone focused. And for those in Italy, your day just a got a little brighter.

If you follow this link code (LINK) you can download and add a Nokia Lumia gadget to your avatar all for free. It's wee little Windows Phone with Nokia emblazoned on the top and ties win with the Lumia 610 launching over in that region.

Unfortunately when we tried here in the US, we were told it's not available in our region. Heck, even changing our region settings on our 360 didn't help but if any of you clever blokes figure out how to bypass this limitation, hit us up in comments.

A non-working, magenta Lumia 900 for Italian Nokia stores

Although the rumored Magenta Lumia 900 never materialized on AT&T for Mother's day there is still plenty of evidence that the pink legend exists and someone will be getting it soon. Whether it's from Nokia's own Facebook page, a Finnish online retailer or Australia, the magenta 900 is certainly on the horizon.

Now, magenta "dummy" phones have begun appearing at Italian Nokia stores suggesting that Italy may be one of the first areas to get the device. No word on availability of anything else for that matter, just the above picture of one.

Our guess is Nokia still working to fulfill orders on the cyan, matte-black and glossy-white versions and ramping up production for magenta is taking some time. Hopefully though we'll see it soon enough here in the US and elsewhere.

Amazon Italy has the entry-level Nokia Lumia 610 available for pre-order and set to be in stock on May 22. It is currently listed at a price of € 203.51 ($267). The Lumia 610 is Nokia's first attempt at a truly low-end offering and will come loaded with Windows Phone 7.5 Tango (build 8773), which is a stripped down version designed to run on as little as 256MB RAM.

Inside you will find:

  • 3.7" screen
  • 800MHz CPU
  • 256MB of RAM
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 5-megapixel rear camera

But despite the budget hardware, the 610 is still a hot little number.  It retains the look and feel of its higher-end brethren and fits nicely in the Lumia family.  It's not clear if the May 22 availability applies to other European markets, but we will keep you posted as we find out.

The Windows Phone team has taken the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge to Italy with a steady stream of contestants attempting to best the platform. Should they lose they would (as usual) have to hold up a sign and announce they've been smoked by a Windows Phone. But should they win, and this is the interesting part, they'd pocket a pair of headphones.

What's so interesting about the headphones? They're shaped like a giant phone.

Possibly the coolest prize from the challenge? The Windows Phone Italy team has been keeping everyone up-to-date with latest happenings on their Twitter account, paying particular attention to the charts which record the wins / loses. According to the photos published, Windows Phone appeared to have been holding its own successfully.

Check out more photos after the break. Via: Plaffo
