jumper

Fly on your way like an eagle , Fly as high as the sun

We last mentioned Pirate Cat back in May when it first launched. The game was initially offered for free as an introductory offer and turned out to be quite the mini-hit. The game is similar to a “jumper” where you need to reach a certain height but instead of leaping, your character (an ambitious feline) flies to the moon. You do this by launching your slingshot at birds, collecting their feathers and grabbing power ups along the way. Featuring catchy music and unique graphics, the game quickly won our hearts.

We’re now happy to report that version 1.1 is available in the Marketplace with the following new features and improvements...

Windows Phone Game Review: LeaderFlip

I really had no clue on what to expect when I first started playing the Windows Phone game LeaderFlip. It's a jumper game where you jump various world leaders as high as you can in an effort to reach the moon.

Now you might say, "Joy, another jumper game" but LeaderFlip was surprising fun to play. You have enough bonuses to help boost your way up the screen (some in a rather creative way) to keep things interesting. And in the end, while I don't see playing LeaderFlip for marathon sessions, it's not a bad time waster for short bits.

We've covered the popular "jumper" game MonsterUp previously on Windows Phone Central--published by Karios, the game features great music, bold, adorable graphics and interesting twists on an old concept. Though Doodle Jump gets the headlines, MonsterUp to us was always more creative. Now, Karios has returned with MonsterUp Adventures and we got a little sneak peek of the upcoming tile.

Instead of just a straight sequel i.e. yet-another-jumper, MonsterUp Adventures is more like a proper video game now. It features:

  • Levels you need to complete
  • Multiple "bosses"
  • Gems, jewels and coins to collect to unlock new monsters
  • A shop to purchase new monsters (who each have unique powers)

Whereas before the goal was to just jump as high as you can, now on each level you need to "jump to the end" to complete it. It takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes per level and yes, it's quite challenging at times (especially on the 2nd half of the island). The collecting of jewels to purchase new monsters is well done as it gives you motivation to try new combinations, plus it adds to the replay value.  The bosses, while not very difficult, add a nice break to the jumping and the exquisitely drawn and unique backgrounds keep the visuals fresh.

Sadly, MonsterUp Adventures as submitted to be an Xbox LIVE game but was denied by Microsoft. Like Karios, we're not sure what the criteria is for making into that coveted camp but compared to the last few stinkers on Xbox LIVE, MonsterUp Adventures more than makes the cut in our mind.

The plus side is MonsterUp Adventures will get to your phones sooner than if it were on Xbox LIVE and Karios can deliver more updates, more frequently.

So our verdict? We really like this game. Jumpers are fun but they can get old fast. Karios Games have taken that concept to a new level with 'Adventures, breathing new life into the growing franchise. With fantastic graphics, a catchy tune and high re-playablity we're impressed.

Look for MonsterUp Adventures to arrive in the Marketplace very soon. Check out the promo vid after the break...

Mini-review - Cosmic Jumper by Magiko Gaming

I don't often give reviews for games, that's Paul and George's thing, but when I do it's because I really dig it. That's the situation here for Cosmic Jumper by Magiko Gaming (Platformance Castle Pain, Temple Death) which is just a lot of arcade fun.

The game is a platform jumper, of which we have plenty in the Marketplace. But this plays different--more like an arcade game from the 1990's. It has great controls, spiffy graphics and probably the best music you'll ever hear for a game. Going further, the re-playability is quite high and there's even an Xbox 360 Arcade version (under the different title 'Who is God').

Watch the video, try the game. If you like it, it'll set you back a measely $0.99. Get it here in the Marketplace.

Escaping Lava - App Spotlight

Escaping Lava is a jumper game of sorts for your Windows Phone. You play the role of an archeologist who is exploring a volcano. While your searching, the volcano begins to erupt and, you guessed it, you have to escape the lava flow.

You have a wall with various protruding rocks and instead of jumping your way to the top of the screen, you use a grappling hook and rope. You shoot your grappling hook by tapping on the rock you want to swing to.  You then use your momentum to swing to the next rock, working your way up the screen. The higher you climb, the greater the score.

It sounds easy but some rocks explode, some give away to your weight and you can out stretch your rope. Then there's the lava. If your momentum pulls you too low, you run the risk of being overtaken by the lava.

There is a free trial available for Escaping Lava with the full version running $.99. If you like jumper games but are looking for a new twist to the concept, Escaping Lava might be worth a try. You can find the game here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.
