live

If you use Xbox LIVE Extras on Windows Phone 7, you may have noticed an update pushed to you today, specifically v1.50012.0 (up from v1.3). And if you're like us, you're wondering what changed? Don't worry, we got you covered:

New countries, new languages! We’re making Xbox LIVE Extras available in new languages including French, Italian, German, and Spanish. This also means that Xbox LIVE Extras will now be available in all the official countries where Windows Phone and Xbox LIVE are available!

Manage friend requests inside Xbox LIVE Extras! You’ll now be able to accept, or reject friend requests inside of Xbox LIVE Extras. Additionally you’ll be able to manage your friends’ lists as well as requests to others.

Even more additional features! We’ve also added a bunch of additional features such as new Avatar animations and configuration options, and displaying your motto on your profile. We’ve also worked to improve overall stability of the application!

We also can't help but notice it's finally faster to load, which is a welcomed change as well. We're going to bet that some of our Euro friends will be happy with the additional language support, allowing them to join in the party.

Go here on your phone or desktop to grab the app.

How to: Xbox Live Gold Family Pack

Mentioned briefly in the introductory video for the latest Dashboard Update (which hit Xbox 360 consoles this past Monday and was officially announced right before the US Launch of Kinect in NYC on Wednesday) the Xbox Live Gold Family Pack is really finally truly here. Not so surprisingly, some confusion and many questions were raised among the users that don't know what to do with multiple Xbox Live Gold accounts and multiple consoles.

How it will affect their Zune accounts and alter their interactions with each of the services was also a dodgy subject. I recommend reading on if you find any aspect of the new plan confusing, confounding, befuddling, frustrating, or any other disorienting verb. We'll do our best to leave you enlightened and ready to set up an Xbox Live Gold Family Pack.

You may find it's worth it even if you don't have a full family!

While the Windows Phone Marketplace is available in many countries at launch--17 in all to be exact--last we checked the world is still a bit larger. If you're one of those with no access to the Marketplace, but are able to import an unlocked GSM device, then you may be interested in this ability to switch your Marketplace region documented by E's Phoneblog.

We'll post the directions after the jump--it's actually very simple to do and only has a few steps. But before we do this we should point out something:  This is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. So while this works, you can't undo it later, meaning that in the future you can't just easily "switch" to your country's Marketplace, not without having to create a whole new LIVE account. Caveat emptor.

Still, for those with no immediate prospects of a localized Marketplace (we feel for ya), this may be your best bet.

A few days ago we had covered how to create and combine an Xbox Live account and Zune account by using one powerful all-encompassing Windows Live ID - the ringleader that ties all of these services together. We've noted that if you don't currently use any of these services, or use just one of them, that you should create a Windows Live ID first. Yes, the term Windows Live ID is synonymous with Hotmail account so if you've got a Hotmail account, you've in tern, got a Windows Live ID. Many people are already using either an Xbox live account or Zune account without them being linked to a Windows Live ID. This is easily remedied if you have only one Windows Live ID you'd like to use for each service but gets pretty complicated if you want to combine multiple open accounts.

I got on the phone with Microsoft's Technical Support staff and went through their chain of command to get some definitive answers and to see what these users should do when they get a Windows Phone 7 device.

Read on after the break for our discussion with Microsoft and multiple accounts!

All things much change and according to Major Nelson, the Xbox.com website gets a big overhaul tomorrow (here are a few screen shots) .

While there are many changes, the biggest one is the ability to play web games over LIVE will be available. And if you or associate happens to have a Windows Phone 7 device, you can play them over the web. Boy does that sound like a time-killer at work.

Other notable changes are:

  • Browser based Avatar editor: Edit your avatar and preview avatar items before purchase
  • Combined views for messages, friend and game requests
  • Improved notification of your account subscription
  • Leverage Family Reports to understand what your family is doing and how they are using LIVE
  • Marketplace: More powerful search and more intuitive ways to browse and filter

Guide: Linking Windows Live with Xbox Live

Windows Phone 7 has made an appearance on the Xbox Live website as a showcase of things to come this holiday season. Microsoft certainly has all of their ducks in a row but what about you? Have you already prepared yourself for when you’ve actually have one of the new devices in your hands? If you’ve already have a Windows Live ID or are already a member of the Xbox Live community than you’re next to set. How about both though? Or what if you’ve just got one of the two? Or two separate accounts? The whole process of creating or linking accounts can put you in the dark as to what, exactly, you should be doing. Fret not, we’re here to help!

Read on after the break on how to manage and link up your LIVE acccounts in preperation for Windows Phone 7!

While none of us hip kids get to play with them just yet, Microsoft has gone ahead and flipped the switch on for those Xbox games for Windows Phone 7. Well, for two of them at least: 'Flowerz' and 'Hexic Rush'

It's basically a milestone for the company since this is the first time, as Michael Klucher tweets above, that achievements are being counted towards your Xbox gamer-tag.

Klucher also notes on his blog that this is still a test-phase:

I did want to let everyone know who might have access to these games through pre-release hardware that they should be considered test games and not early launch titles. You can and should expect that everything about the game is subject to change or be disabled at any time.

Finally, Paul Thurrott has also has a write up on this happening with some screenshots of the games in the Zune software and his achievements. Cool stuff and it means we're inching closer and closer to that big day.

On Windows Phone 7 there are two types of games: Xbox LIVE supported and non-LIVE supported. The former requires more time, money and skills for getting approval and is typical reserved for the "bigger" game studios who can get access to Microsoft's LIVE network (higher standard); the latter anyone can write games for and sell/distribute through the Marketplace.

Therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Xbox LIVE games, the ones that will be of high quality and leverage the full feature-set of WP7, will get listing priority on your device.

This is according Michel Klucher (Lead Program Manger XNA Development Platform at Microsoft), who on his blog gave some details on this issue noting:

Games that do not use Xbox LIVE will be listed right below the Xbox LIVE enabled titles in your collection. All games can be pinned to the start menu just like any other content in Windows Phone 7.

While not a big deal, it seems this would push developers to go for the LIVE option if possible though it may make a few developers feel a little lower on the totem poll if they don't have the deep pockets, like the studios.

Xbox LIVE price goes up November 1st

There are three types of people who visit this site:

  1. Those with Xbox, LIVE & want Windows Phone 7
  2. Those who are planning to get an Xbox + LIVE for Windows Phone 7
  3. Those who never plan on getting an Xbox because you "don't game"

This post is for #1 and #2--we're cool. As for you number three'ers, you're dead to me, feel free to scroll down and read another blog entry.

Anyways, it costs something like $49.99 for the Gold membership, which allows access to all the cool online stuff, gaming, online multiplayer, Netflix, Last.FM, etc. (For those who don't have one, the Xbox is just as much a media center as a gaming machine--my usage for instance is probably 70% media e.g. Netflix/TV torrents, 30% actual gaming, usually Star Wars related.)

While not a bad deal, it's going up on November 1st to $59.99, which seems to be a curious time right when a certain mobile OS launches and Microsoft will see an influx of new customers. Oh and that Kinect thing is launching too.

The good news is that you can renew now for $39.99 to tap in that extra year and save 30%, which we suppose is a good deal (unless you membership just auto-renewed like 2 weeks ago, grrr).

Read up on the details and renew here.

As we mentioned just a few days ago, we were expecting Microsoft to have a few announcements at Gamescom conference in Germany this week and sure enough, they delivered. And in our opinion, big time.

In an exciting move, Microsoft has announced a whole hodge podge of game titles that will be released during the launch phase of Windows Phone 7 and there are some biggies.  The are so many in fact, you'll have click the link to see the whole list, but we'll tease you with a few:

  • Halo: Waypoint
  • Bejeweled LIVE
  • Castlevania
  • Guitar Hero 5
  • Max and the Magic Marker
  • Star Wars: Battle for Hoth
  • Assassins Creed
  • Asphalt 5

In all, there will be 50 titles launching this year (all listed after the break), from studios such as Gameloft, Konami, Namco Bandai, PopCap, THQ and of course, the newly formed Mobile Gaming Studios from Microsoft.

Sound exciting? Read on for some screen shots, videos, the official commercial, a poll and much more details!

For those of you who remember when Windows Phone 7 debuted, you may recall that the Xbox gaming hub was not 'live' at the time--the personal avatar didn't do the little jig  as it was just a place-holder, as well as not updating all the gaming achievements that you may have won.

As we approach RTM, we knew of course that would change and we're getting word now that, indeed the Xbox hub is now live and ready to go. From Michael Klucher, a WP7 developer:

My Windows Phone 7 device has really become my phone. I keep it updated with the latest builds and use it as I would any phone I’ve ever owned. I play games(from App Week), check my email, listen to music, and surf the web. This week started out like most others, I flashed my phone, entered my Windows Live ID, and went into the Games Hub…

Whoa! That’s me! By me of course I mean my Gamertag, Avatar, and latest Achievement in the Games Hub! I couldn’t believe it, we’ve had the Games Hub working for a while, but up until now it’s been on internal networks inside Microsoft. This week was the first time I really got to see my “true” gamer identity on the phone.

... It’s an incredible experience to see something that many of us have been working on really come together and shine

We can't be the only ones who are excited about this Xbox integration and we're pretty psyched to see this all in person at some point. Combined with the re-launch of XBox & Zune in the fall, Microsoft has a great opportunity for synergy here, lets hope they deliver.

Review: Windows Live for Windows Phone

One of the things that have made Google’s Android platform such a strong player in the mobile space is the simple fact that Google has so many popular services. Google’s ability to tightly integrate these services into the Android experience is one of the things that is so appealing. Microsoft may have the numbers, but Google has everything neatly and seamlessly on Android, where Windows Mobile does not.

Think about it. Where Google has Google Search, Gmail and Google Talk; Microsoft has Bing, Hotmail/Live Mail, and Messenger. Though the similarities between the two giants are well documented, the way that they have approached the integration of their services into their mobile platforms couldn’t be more different. While Google makes use of their services bordering on mandatory (you have to have an account to even use an Android device), Microsoft has chosen to take a much more low key approach through Windows Live for Windows Phone.

Windows Live for Windows Phone hasn’t received much face time; but is worth a quick look, which is waiting on the other side of the break.

Pros:
Provides Push Email without needing Exchange. Supports Messenger chat. Free.
Cons:
Not enough support for Windows Live services. Bland appearance.

Qik snags $5.5 million in new funding

How popular is Qik, you ask? Put it this way: The mobile streaming video service just secured about $5.5 million dollars in funding, as noted in a recent SEC filing, which you can read after the break, if you're so inclined. [via mocoNews]

Among the investors throwing in this time around are Quest Venture Parterners, some private investors and CampVentures.

If you haven't played with Qik yet, definitely give it a shot. It's a simple way to livestream video from your phone. We demoed it way back in the beta stages, and it's cool to see just how much it's grown since then.

Andy Lees, fresh off chatting up The New York Times, now has sat down with CNET's Ina Fried, giving us a couple more things to ponder as we await Mobile World Congress and the expected announcement of Windows Mobile 6.5, and the future cloud services.

There's not too much newness here — Windows Mobile 6.5's supposed to keep us going until WM7 finally is released, the new Internet Explorer Mobile, those "Sky" cloud services. But Microsoft's VP of all-things-mobile does offer a little bit of what some of the Danger team (the group behind the Sidekick that was purchased by Microsoft last year) has been up to.

Microsoft has two separate teams at work on the services piece. One is Microsoft's Windows Live group, while the other is a rather secretive group headed by former Mac unit head Roz Ho--a group that also includes the team Microsoft acquired when it bought Danger. Lees declined to say specifically what Ho is up to, however.

And that's still in line with what we'd been thinking all along. We weren't expecting a Windows Mobile Sidekick. Rather, it's the services Microsoft was after.

Fried also gets Lees to geek out a little over some upcoming devices. And if this pans out, it could radically change the Windows Mobile front.

He noted that the power of the kinds of phones that come out next year will be incredible, well beyond even today's devices. Phones next year will have dual-core processors, super-fast data connections, and graphics power rivaling that of the original Xbox.

But our first thought after reading that is, what's it gonna cost us? But no matter what, we're getting more and more psyched for Mobile World Congress and beyond.

Qik, an awfully good live video streaming service, has added over 20 Windows Mobile phones to their compatibility list. The latest Treos from Palm, the Epix and Omnia from Samsung, and a slew of HTC devices from the Touch Pro to the Vodafone PDA 9600 have all been added.

Add this to their last round of updates and there's a better than average chance that Qik will support your Windows Mobile Smartphone at this point.

Windows Live gets Live-r

Microsoft-based Channel 10 has all the deets on the relaunch of Windows Live, which starts now. Of interest: SkyDrive online storage has been bumped to 25 gigs, web pages overall have a much cleaner and better interface, and the cool yet underused Windows Live Homepage now does all sorts of fancy aggregation that might interest you (above: a nice explanation of how that works).

Of course, as noted over at Ars, this does little to help the confusing array of overlapping services offered under the “Live” moniker. We hope they're right that the upgraded SkyDrive space and the new sync abilities may be slated to be subsumed into Live Mesh someday.

When that day comes, we assume you'll be seeing all of these fancy services available seamlessly on Windows Mobile. Until that day comes, you're forced to recognize that Microsoft has some of the best cloud sync services available -- if you can just figure out which one you're supposed to use and get it set up.

Live Search for Windows Mobile Gets Updated

Speaking of Live Services, we'd actually heard this was in the pipeline way back during CTIA 2008, and now it's here: a new update to the excellent Live Search App. Go grab it now at http://wls.live.com.

WLS already offered excellent local search, maps, driving directions, traffic info, gas prices, and movie times. Now we see that the new update adds:

  • weather (finally!)
  • Web search
  • a little section called “collections” that you can basically think of as saved searches combined with a mini-rss reader.
  • We also hear that it's fully compatible with Windows Mobile 6.1, for the handful of you out there who've managed to snag a Touch Dual at Best Buy.
  • Bluetooth headset support for spoken searches
  • You can delete recent locations (i.e., the following is a thing of the past: “What's that hon? Oh, see, I was just driving by that strip club when I was looking for the nearest taco stand. Honest!”)

Did we mention that WLS is excellent? It's Bill & Ted excellent, free and a must-install for every Windows Mobile device, bar none.
