Win a Nokia Lumia 710 Windows Phone

Windows Phone UK is giving away four Lumia 710s to lucky winners.  The winners will be among the first to own the Windows Phone handset in the country. The Nokia Windows Phone is set to launch in February, with multiple sources pointing to the 1st

How can you get your paws on one? Simple, should you be familiar with "into by Windows Phone". All that's required is for you to earn 25 points to unlock access required to enter the draw and you're almost done. To earn points you have a number of options available, including social media. Once you have enough points, simply upload a photo of yourself wearing your brightest, most colourful clothes. This competition is open to the UK only.

We've already covered the Lumia 710 landing on British shores soon enough, but according to the Nokia Lumia Momentum Map (for world domination), we should be looking at a date of February 1st. Three UK is one carrier who has made public their plan to stock the 710, and have the status set at "coming soon".

Sporting a 3.7" display, 5MP camera and 8GB storage, the 710 is the baby of the Lumia family with the 800 and 900 the "beefed up" brothers. Although the specifications don't match the high end handsets, it does sport a 1.4Ghz chip that will ensure your Windows Phone experience is top notch.

Should you be looking forward to the 710 (review) and reside in the UK then the wait is almost over for you to snap on your favourite back plates and rock out with the Lumia Windows Phone. We expect other major UK carriers to jump on board with Three to provide further choice for customers.

Nokia Lumia Windows Phone production in photos

Nokia has published a number of photos in an album on their Facebook account. The album ("Nokia Lumia Production") allows the viewer to see how the Lumia family of Windows Phones are produced before heading out to owners across the world.

The workers who make all this magic happen were also in the spotlight at Nokia World 2011 with a live feed being broadcasted to the audience. Check out some more shots from the album after the break.

Singapore's SG Best, an online retailer, is listing the Nokia Lumia 900 as "coming soon", following the Carphone Warehouse posting (which was subsequently removed). This is further confirmation that the 900 will be coming to those who reside outside the U.S., which shouldn't come as a surprise - it makes sense that Nokia will have three Windows Phones to cater for three audiences.

The listing is not by accident neither as the specifications and display image all fit in line with the device. Although no date has been provided (the Carphone Warehouse stated June as the month for availability), SG Best at least reinstates hope of the handset traveling across the world.

The official date for the Lumia 800 release in South Africa was set for the 7th of February, but Simon Dingle has just tweeted out the image above.

If you struggle to read white on red, then here's the breakdown: The Nokia Lumia 800 will see it's first promotion on the 26'th January starting at 8AM. The first 200 people to purchase will get a free XBOX (presumably a 360). Seems like a pretty good deal, although obviously there is no pricing mentioned.

So what is the significance of the 26'th? That's the morning after the Nokia Lumia 800 launch event held at the Vodacom Dome, which is tomorrow.

Stay frosty, and lookout for our report from the launch tomorrow!

Bloomberg has compiled an average estimation of 22 analysts for just how many Lumia Windows Phones the Finnish manufacturer has shipped. According to the compiled data, the estimated figure is 1.3 million. The projections range from 2 million to a single analyst predicting under the 1 million marker - 800 thousand.

Lee Simpson, a London-based analyst at Jefferies International, had the following to say on the estimations.

"There weren’t a lot of the hero handsets out there -- HTC were struggling, RIM didn’t have a show-me device, Sony Ericsson and Motorola weren’t really stepping into the mix, so there was probably enough space for Nokia to be able to point to fourth- quarter numbers they were happy with."

This fits in with what Morgan Stanley had in their chart for the 37 million Nokia handsets being shipped in 2012 prediction. If investors regain confidence in the company, and analysts continue to calculate impressive figures for the platform, we could hopefully see some positive marketing come from the headlines that will be pumped out.

This is really something. Following what we've witnessed in the UK, Sweden is witnessing some Nokia Lumia redecorating on the subway, in newspapers and on advertisement screens. Attention all Swedes - incoming "The Amazing Everyday" campaign to accompany today's launch of the Lumia 800 in that country.

We've also learned that the Lumia 800 can be had for SEK 194,50/USD 29 (for six months and 239 for the remaining 18 on a 24 months subscription plan) on Tele 2. You can pick that up here.

Check out the video after the break for a quick capture of a Lumia advertisement.

All that's required from entrants are personal details (as is the case with any Facebook promotion) as well as describing what smartphone feature(s) would change your life in 100 words or less.

The competition is perfect for those who are yet to upgrade to a smartphone with the Lumia 710 being a superb low-end Windows Phone. Competition ends on February 17th. Be sure to check out the sweepstake rules.

Vodafone has always been creative when it comes to television advertising, whether we have bees walking into shop windows, or someone taking photos of himself and a sleeping lady on a flight and getting caught in the act. In the above video, we have a couple preparing to enjoy a meal and are joined by Yoda (a powerful Jedi from Star Wars). He offers to transfer the man's contacts from the old mobile phone to the new Lumia 800 Windows Phone, using the force.

The advert's message is covering contact transferring that Vodafone can do in-store for customers (RED Box service), but it's good to see a Windows Phone being used as prop.

Windows Phone is on the rise in France, as can be seen in the above browser share chart. The OS is almost hitting Blackberry, which appears to be still in decline (is there ever any good news when it comes to Blackberry?). This goes on top of the French developer who saw a noticeable increase in Lumia 800 activity using his apps on the Marketplace. If we remember the chart that the developer provided, no other Windows Phone dropped to make way for Nokia's handset so one would assume we've had a number of French platform adopters.

Although it's not all roses in the garden, prior to what seems to be the end-of-2011 surge (thanks to Nokia's marketing frenzy), the graph doesn't show the kind of growth we'd hope to see. But if the sharp increase continues with more Nokia and Microsoft marketing, we should see some positive results indeed.

An article has been published over at Nokia Conversations detailing the 1600.2483.8106.11500 firmware update for the Lumia 800, which is in the process of rolling out. The update is being pushed out gradually using Zune software and contains two benefits; battery performance (making use of the capacity too) and WiFi connectivity improvements. This is update number two of two that were announced at the end of last year.

"The update will not be delivered to every Lumia 800 simultaneously, but rather will be staggered over the next two weeks through Microsoft’s standard update process. This helps each owner gets the update without any hitches. Around half of owners will get the update in the next seven days, with the remainder over the following seven days."

Unfortunately, we've received reports that users have encountered issues with soft key lighting and battery performance after updating, but we've yet to confirm this on our models. Let us know in the comments when you get the update.

Nokia announced at the end of last year that two updates would be hitting the Lumia 800 to fix a number of issues that were present. We've already received the first firmware update, but it's time for those who suffer from 800s that aren't using the battery capacity in its entirety to receive some love.

Operators in France have started to push out the second update, so we should see some movement across the board soon. For reference, the firmware version changes are found below, including the first update.

Firmware version: 1600.2475.7720.11414 -> UPDATE 1: 1600.2479.7740.11451 -> UPDATE 2: 1600.2483.8106.11500

We haven't yet got the notification on any of our Lumia 800s. Let us know in the comments if you're also receiving this update for your handset.

EDIT: Nokia UK has confirmed the start of the rollout on their Facebook page, check out a video walkthrough after the break on updating should you be new to the platform.

UPDATE: We've received reports from readers who have updated to the latest version that the lighting of their soft keys are acting up should medium or high brightness be set. If you're also experiencing this issue after updating let us know in the comments.

Windows Phone featured in Coronation Street

In the second part of Coronation Street (a popular British TV soap) that aired this evening (8:30pm), we can clearly see a Nokia Lumia 800 being held by the actor with a beautiful camera shot to show off calendar functionality. At about 21:20 in, we see the product placement. You can check out the episode on ITV Player (link below), but be aware that ITV loves advertisements.

EA Mobile Games has released a video teaser highlighting eleven (if my count is right) gaming titles that will be heading to the Nokia Windows Phones. We first heard about the exclusive partnership during Nokia World and again during the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show.

The titles spotted in the minute long video include:

  • Yahtzee
  • The Game of Life
  • Spy Mouse

The video doesn't show much of each title but just enough to spark your interest. Nokia is due to have over twenty titles for an exclusive period available for their Lumia Windows Phones. It will be interesting to see what the remaining titles will be.

Nokia Lumia 800 coming to Vodafone Ireland

Good news for our Irish brothers, Vodafone IE is looking to bring the Lumia 800 to Ireland. Nokia's flagship Windows Phone has received positive attention from both the bloggersphere and owners across Europe, which will make the handset a welcomed addition to the Irish arsenal. No word yet on pricing or availability, but we would hazard a guess that it'll be competitive and be in line with what we've seen in the UK.

Nokia holding event for South Africa

If you needed anymore proof that South Africa isn't just being tossed aside when it comes to the Nokia Lumia/future devices, then we have great news for you. We have just received word from an anonymous tipster that Nokia is holding an event in Midrand near the end of this month. Although the invite doesn't outright say that this is a launch party or unveiling event, it's probably quite safe to assume that it is.

And here is the invite:

Besides the obvious positives of Nokia launching their Windows Phone 7 devices in South Africa, there is another aspect that you may not have considered. Blackberry and Android may be all the rage over here at the moment but before that Nokia was a really big player in SA.

I remember a time when almost every person I knew either had a Nokia or was attempting to get one. What this means is that when they start selling their new phones people will not be buying Windows Phone, they will be buying a Nokia, because they trust the brand. So this skips the step of people avoiding WP7 because of their feelings on Windows Mobile, and allows them to experience the amazing everyday with no bias.

EDIT: This is a private event.

CES 2012 has been pretty huge for Nokia, and Windows Phone as a whole. The event saw the announcement of the Lumia 900, which will be the flagship of the U.S. push against competitor platforms. Reviews and feedback from press and attendees has been generally positive as a whole.

Not only that, but to really show off how good the device is Nokia has earned awards from multiple sources for being the best product at the event. So what has the Windows Phone won?

  • CNet's "Best of CES" smartphone.
  • Popular Mechanics editor's choice award for CES.
  • Popular Science "Product of the Future".
  • LAPTOP magazine's "Best of CES" finalists.

Not bad, eh? The reception has built up on top of the 800, which also wasn't shy of a positive review.

South Africa getting Nokia devices!

Many people are of the opinion that Nokia is Microsoft's trump card. The game changer. And it really is looking more and more likely that Nokia is going to give Windows Phone 7 the momentum it needs to get further than the hands of tech bloggers and developers.

We recently covered Nokias plans to take over the world, and now we have report of the Lumia 800 and 710 both launching in South Africa in Q1 2012 and just after that respectively. Yep, you heard that right. The same country that can't manage to tell the different between Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 (Vodacom's terrible advertising campaign for the Omnia 7 - not the one below). So why is this a big deal? Well, because up until now South Africa has only had three devices; the Samsung Omnia 7, the HTC Trophy and the HTC Mozart.

As a resident of South Africa I had actually almost given up hope for WP7 here when just recently one of the service providers sold the last of their Omnia 7 stock:

For reference R1699 is about $208.

Now I would take this with a slight pinch of salt as the actual source is not mentioned and upon reaching out to a local Microsoft Developer Evangelist I received the usual "we cannot confirm or deny this". If it is legit then presumably the fine details are still being ironed out, and hopefully South Africa will appear on Nokias domination map soon.

EDIT: We have received word that this came straight from Nokia, so you may remove said salt where necessary.

Morgan Stanley, a global financial services firm, has predicted that Nokia will be shipping 37 million Windows Phones in 2012. Not only that, but they expect the number to almost double in 2013 to 64 million. This is depending on how aggressive Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T market the Lumia 900. If Europe is anything to go by, we're sure Nokia will be pushing extremely hard with the software giant and U.S. carrier close behind. With a rumoured $200 million budget available between them, we should look forward to some interesting promotions and events being set up.

As Steve Ballmer mentioned at CES, they've got a long way to go, but the road is looking positive should a strong push be effective.
