Go To is a new navigation app for our Windows Phone 8 devices that lets you look up addresses and create voice commands to generate travel directions to that address.

The app is in it's infancy but the foundation present in Go To's initial release is nice. The app supports both Nokia and Google maps with directions generated through the navigation apps installed on your Windows Phone (HERE,  NAVIGON, etc.).

HTC, much like Samsung, has been targeted by not only ourselves, but consumers too. The companies have been in the heat of complaints when it comes to lack of support for Windows Phone, when compared to Nokia. We'll attempt to not sound like a broken record, but it's long been the case where Nokia has pushed the platform forward, with Samsung and HTC (as well as other manufacturers) taking more of a back seat approach.

Despite what we all may think of HTC, the company may yet show consumers that the towel hasn't been thrown in when it comes to Windows Phone. The news website Windows Phone Italy has contacted sources familiar with HTC plans in Taiwan and have learnt that the company is looking at a navigation solution for its family of Windows Phones. Could we see the first sign of the company looking to match its unique hardware with software?

A lot of folks running Windows Phone on an HTC or Samsung device have bemoaned at the some of the exclusive apps Nokia makes available only to their own Lumia line. While it makes sense for Nokia to differentiate themselves, we know that sting from feeling left out. No pouting today though, Nokia now is letting folks on non-Lumia devices get some more HERE action.

Previously HERE Drive Beta was available to everyone, but now you can add HERE Maps and HERE Transit to the list of apps.

Do you have a Windows Phone 8 device? Do you use offline Maps? Then you may want to peep under the app’s setting to see if you have an update.

We’re getting reports that Microsoft (and technically Nokia) are pushing out Map data updates to devices with Windows Phone 8 and while you’ll eventually get a pop up notification telling you as much, you can get the data early by fetching it yourself.

Navigation Shortcuts is a nifty app for your Windows Phone 8 device that lets you create...well...navigation shortcuts.  The shortcuts will launch whatever navigation app is installed on your Windows Phone and create turn by turn directions to get you to where you need to go.

You can pin shortcut  tiles for your destination to your Start Screen, launch navigation shortcuts with voice commands or tap on a destination within the app to launch directions.

While there's not much to Navigational Shortcuts, it's a handy app to have by giving you quick access to your navigational needs.

We last touched on a map refresh in late December when users were able to download OTA updates to their offline locations.

Today, Nokia Maps have received yet another update and once again, this applies to all Windows Phone 8 devices, not just Nokia. If you have downloaded maps on your phone, you should have already been prompted to update them for the latest batch of improvements. If you haven’t already, go to settings > applications > maps > check for updates.

The question you may be wondering is, what changed? We have the details.

We reported earlier in the week on s slew of updates for Maps but in case you missed it these apply to all Windows Phone 8 handsets. Windows Phone 8 has been designed with the ability to download and install maps that can be used offline.

From time to time these will get updated with improved detail or just changes that normally happen to maps over time. Unlike other updates the maps don’t appear to have a push mechanism so you’ll have to kick the process off manually. Read on to find out how.

Photo Maps is a Windows Phone 8 photography app that mixes your images with a map detailing the location of the photo. Photo Maps isn't like Image Map where your photos are mapped out based on where they were taken. Instead, Photo Maps lets you take a photo and adds small Bing map of your location to the image.

Maps choices can be set from within Photo Maps' settings and you can choose between road, aerial, hybrid and terrain map views. Camera controls are rather limited in that you can only turn on/off the flash and toggle between the rear/front cameras from within the app.

Nokia Maps has been bumped to version 3.0.125.8, which introduces improvements to stability and performance. When firing up the app on a Lumia Windows Phone it no longer takes noticeably longer than Bing Maps--in fact we're only seeing about a one-second speed advantage now with Bing Maps for load time.

Nokia has launched its HERE maps for both the iPhone and iPad. The app enables directions for walking, but not for driving, and provides public transport information and guidance. Built on Nokia's strong NAVTEQ backend services means that Apple consumers will be able to search for locations accurately (see The Amazing iOS6 Maps for more giggles).

A few days ago we shared that NAVIGON USA for Windows Phone 8 was available at the Windows Phone Store. Well now NAVIGON Europe has made the jump to Windows Phone 8.

The NAVIGON apps are feature rich navigation apps that includes user selected downloadable maps. This allows you to travel without depending on a data connection for your maps.  It also helps save on storage space in that you only download the maps you need.

Just as with the NAVIGON USA app, version 4.5 of NAVIGON Europe has all the features of the Windows Phone 7 version save the Text-to-Speech feature which will be added in an upcoming update.

Nokia have firmly established themselves as a major player in the Windows Phone market. Their devices have been consistently regarded well and their marketing efforts have seen them establish ‘Lumia’ as a powerful and recognisable brand in its own right.

With the advent of Windows Phone 8 we saw Nokia strive to produce the definitive ‘hero’ device of this generation. The Lumia 920 packs some serious specs and for some it’s seen to be the best device of this current crop of phones. It isn’t all about the speeds and feeds, it’s about a cohesive package consisting of exclusive apps, hardware and of course Windows Phone 8.

We've previously reviewed the Lumia 920, which is well worth checking out for the in-depth analysis, but it is from this perspective I’m going to look at how successful it really is.
