microsoft store

This morning in the Walt Whitman Mall located in Huntington Station, New York (that’s Long Island), Microsoft finally threw open their doors to a few hundred willing and able customers to their new retail Store.

We were there to cover it all and the mood was very exciting as Microsoft’s pre-show gave away a Samsung Series 9 laptop, Xbox 360 with Kinect and some other goodies to some lucky folks. The line to get in the store lasted well into 30 minutes post opening and the staff on hand did an excellent job.

Microsoft has revealed the entire list of pop-up stores (or holiday stores) it plans to open throughout North America this coming holiday season. It's a positive sign to see Microsoft build a larger retail presence to combat its main competitor - Apple. 32 stores will open up shop in 20 US states, as well as shops in British Columbia, Toronto, and Alberta, Canada.

With the imminent release of Windows 8, coupled with new Office, Surface tablets and Windows Phone hardware, there's plenty of opportunity for Microsoft to build on its branding revamp to a more simplistic and modern feel. It's a common thought that Microsoft has almost become a new company to what consumers have grown accustomed to.

Good news to our New York readers as you’ll be gaining access to two new Microsoft Stores at the end of September. We’ve known about these locations for awhile but now Microsoft has made it official...

This morning in Boston, Microsoft dropped the curtain on their latest store at the Prudential Center to a massive crowd, loudly celebrating the grand opening.

Considered to be one of their new flagship stores (located very closely Apple), the Boston Microsoft Store managed to garner a large crowd who cheered the countdown and opening--certainly exciting to see. In addition to the new store, Microsoft of course also showed their new company logo.

Windows Phone developer Lance McCarthy was on hand to video the unveiling and it is certainly thrilling to see. It looks like Microsoft has some fans, after all. Thanks, Lance, for the video!

We first caught wind of a new Microsoft retail store heading to Boston, MA back in May and now we are finding out the Grand Opening is set for August 23, 2012.

Boston's store will be located at the Shops at Prudential Center. More specifically, the store will be located in the center's Boylston Arcade. Not sure if this was by chance or design but Boston's Apple Store is located across within stone's throw on Boylston Street as well.  Which should make for an interesting Grand Opening and healthy competition.

If you're going to be in the Boston area for the Grand Opening, we've got a discussion going on in the forums. It may be a great opportunity to meet up with your fellow Windows Phone Central readers.

Thanks, gemini5150, for the tip!

Update from Pulse: "We have been prioritizing web and updating iOS and Android platforms and will look at the Windows phone in the near future. In the meantime, can we persuade you to check out the web app on a desktop platform." In other words, Pulse for Windows Phone looks to be dead for now.

Yet another mystery has fallen on Windows Phone users as the popular Pulse newsreader app has disappeared from the Store. We’ve reached out to the Pulse team for an answer on the matter and will update accordingly.

Recently, the company launched a very snazzy web-based version of their service that is really a sight to behold. The service now syncs between your web version and the app, allowing seamless management of your feeds and news. Unfortunately, any mention of Windows Phone has all be been erased from their site...

Microsoft is set to unveil its Orlando FL store in style with a live performance from Flo Rida to help draw crowds. We previously looked at a list of possible Microsoft Store openings and this one's pretty much spot on with the company opening its doors to The Florida Mall.

The Microsoft Store will open on August 16th at 9:30am with the grand opening ceremony at 10:00am. Complimentary wristbands will be distributed to the first 200 people who visit the store, which are required to jam with Flo Rida on August 18th. Of those 200 wristbands, one will grant the wearer access to meet the artist in person after the live show, which doesn't sound half bad. We wonder if a free Surface tablet is involved (once released)?

Microsoft is set to unveil a number of holiday retail stores including Manhattan in New York City, according to a handful of published job listings. We previously looked at a number of potential locations for Microsoft stores in an unofficial list, but it's good to see evidence of actual positions at future stores open up.

Weezer, an American alternative rock band that was popular in the 1990s, is set to play at a follow-up ceremony at Microsoft's opening of the company's Pentagon City Mall in Arlington, VA store on August 11th, according to a report at ARL. The software giant plans to expand it's brick and mortar empire by opening a number of stores across the US - see previous unofficial list. Inviting Weezer along is adding a cherry to this beautiful ice-cream Sundae.

For those looking for one heck of a deal, you may want to consider heading the online Microsoft Store for that Nokia Lumia 800 entertainment bundle. We first reported on this a few months ago where the four-part package fetched for $899.  No doubt a bit pricey but how does $599 sound?

To refresh your memory, the Nokia entertainment bundle comes with a Lumia800 (black or magenta) which is unlocked and tuned for AT&T’s 3G frequencies. You also get the Play 360 which is a portable, high-fidelity speaker that will allow you to stream your Lumia’s music via Bluetooth (and it has NFC for the future too). To top it off, you get a swanky Nokia Purity HD headset by Monster which for home use is an outstanding choice (they’re over the ear, so not as portable as the in-ear solution) and a Nokia Luna Bluetooth headset (reveiw)

The Play 360 ($150), Luna BT headset ($79) and Purity HD headset ($200) means you’re getting an unlocked Lumia 800 for just $170 which is pretty awesome if you ask us. We of course have a few Lumia 800s here but they have Euro bands making them less than optimal for use on AT&T. Because of that, we’re seriously contemplating throwing down some cash on this bad boy package. We do dearly love our Lumia 900 but the 800 is really the apex of design with the curved screen—truly a great phone.

The Lumia 800 features a 3.7” Super AMOLED screen with ClearBlack, 16GB of storage and an 8MP camera. It’s a solid phone and if 4G LTE is nowhere near you and you don’t use the somewhat gimmicky front-facing camera, picking up the 800 contract-free is a solid option.

We think this drop actually happened a few weeks ago but regardless, head over to the Microsoft Store to take a look. Remember, only black and magenta are available. For those curious, the "magenta" for the Lumia 800 is much more red than pink--it's okay for you guys too. And no, Amazon surprisingly has not yet matched this price but we’ll keep a watch if that happens. Thanks, Blitz_Empire, for the tip

According to a tipster over at WPDownUnder, Microsoft may well be looking to unveil a flagship store in Sydney, Australia. The report suggests the software giant will open up a bricks and mortar store before 2013 to follow the US advancement.

WPDownUnder notes that should a UK store open its doors, it would spark the beginning of an alteration to the partnership with Arvato, a third-party outsourcing provider who manages Microsoft's online store in 31 countries.

With Microsoft soon to launch Windows 8, the Surface tablet range, and Windows Phone 8 ("Apollo") it makes sense for the company to look at ways to further engage with consumers directly. We've seen this with Windows Phone so there's no reason why we can't see a different Microsoft from the corporate beast what we've grown to love and hate.

Would you prefer to see the company expand globally with stores to combat competition?

Microsoft is set to open a new store at Westchester in New York, and according to the construction manager on-site it's set to open "very soon" indeed. We've previously looked at an unofficial list of Microsoft Stores that are to be revealed in the states and the software giant has also recently opened a store in Freehold, NY.

New York Metro has a job listing for a Retail Store Teacher position at the Westchester store, should you be interested in such a career with the software giant. More information will be published when the store is open and ready for business, so stay tuned and take a look at the above photo of the retail store under construction.

Thanks, Sean, for the heads up!

The crowd at the new Microsoft Store in Danbury, Connecticut

As we reported last night, Microsoft was set to open their latest Store in the quaint state of Connecticut who famously just allowed alcohol to be sold on Sunday's just a couple of weeks ago (no joke).

Reader Nicholas R. was there and sent us this report and collection of photos from the event. Overall, we're quite impressed with the sound of things and look forward to that Huntington Station opening here in New York. Check out his telling of the event and pics(taken with a Lumia 900, of course) below!

"So I stopped by a couple hours after the store opening this morning. There were a lot of people there, but it sounds like there were even more when the store actually opened. Some people even camped out overnight in front of the mall. Apparently Microsoft was giving out Xboxes, laptops, and tablets to some of the lucky first people. By the time I got there, they only had zip-up blankets, t-shirts, and concert wristbands left.

In terms of store layout, it's actually pretty nice. Although people accuse MS of stealing Apple's idea of wooden tables and chairs, the overall store doesn't feel like an Apple store. It definitely has a different feel; I guess I would call it futuristic. They have the displays with computers, Xboxes, Windows Phone, etc. They also have some Kinects scattered around for people to play with. In the middle of the store is the Answer Desk. A big glass wall is behind the Answer Desk and separates the front of the store for the back. The back is fairly spacious and has a big TV with a Kinect attached to it. Today, they were passing out the tickets for the concert in the back. But I think they might hold other events there in the future. On the wall surrounding the store is a long screen that changes animations.

Their demos actually extended out into the mall space today. They had some more TVs setup with Kinects out in the mall. These were linked together so people could play against each other right there. They also had a DJ stand and some speakers setup, but it was unattended when I got there (I assume that was for the opening). Out in the parking lot, they do have a big stage setup for the concert later in the evening."

The new Microsoft Store in Danbury Fair mall, Danbury, CT

Microsoft is really on a roll with these official Store openings, no doubt they are in a rush to get them open in time for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 this fall.

The latest is the Danbury Fair mall in Danbury, Connecticut. The store has been under construction since May and now not only are they throwing their doors open at 9:30am tomorrow but at 6pm, they're hosting a concert in the parking lot with an expected 2,000 people in attendance.

Who's playing? Young the Giant with "reggae-flavored rock group" O.A.R. headlining. Not bad, not bad at all.

Microsoft is also donating $1 million in software to the local chapter of Junior Achievement which adds a nice touch. The store is on the 2nd floor of the Danbury Fair mall, located between Lady Footlocker and, we're not kidding, MetroPark. Booya.

If you feel like going, may we suggest you get there early in the morning to get your wristbands. The first 200 in line on the grand opening morning will receive two premiere viewing tickets/wristbands for the concert later that night.

We've been promised some photos and report from reader Nicholas R. (who also sent the above shot back in May), so hopefully we can show that this weekend sometime. Either way, this is hands down one of the biggest store openings for Microsoft yet. Feels good, man. Feels good.

Click here to see the unofficial/official list of upcoming Microsoft Stores. Edit: Looks like they're also opening in Toronto, Canada, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Core Madera, CA too. (Thanks, Travis)

Today, Microsoft threw the doors open to their Freehold, NJ store marking yet another feather in the growing chain's cap. While we're always excited to see another Store open up, especially on the East coast, what makes this opening just a tad hilarious is the curious Apple employees who evidently showed up.

As it is well known, Microsoft has been opening their stores wherever Apple has theirs (including our own location) and perhaps setting up for some interesting drama. In this case, reader Trav sent us the above photo of the brave Apple employees who were checking the competition.

Hey, we don't begrudge Apple and we more than welcome them to the fold even if for just a visit.

Thanks, Trav, for the tip

According to a report over on El Nuevo Dia, Microsoft is set to open up an store in Puerto Rico by the end of 2012. The new store is planned for Plaza las Americas, a sizeable shopping complex located on the island.

The software giant is also opening up new stores across the states, at locations including Boston and Orlando. Here's hoping they'll continue to expand beyond the borders, and maybe plonk one in merry ol' London to enjoy the constant downpour.

We just got word from a reader that a Microsoft Store is officially "coming soon" to the Florida Mall in Orlando, FL. This news makes the unofficial list of opening Microsoft Stores, which we previously published, look more likely to become reality. We expect the store that's currently behind the colourful set of tiles to open some time later this year to join the one that's also going up in Boston.

According to the Mall map, and if we're reading it correctly in relation to the image that was sent in to us, the Microsoft Store is set to open slap bang next to an existing Apple Store.

Thanks, Michael, for sending in the photo!

With the announcement of a new Microsoft Store being built for Boston, lots of our readers anxiously await to see if Redmond will be coming to their areas soon. While Microsoft does not pre-announce these stores too far in advance, one way you can easily figure out is by simply looking up where they are hiring.

Yup, on the Microsoft Store Careers site they have many positions open and looking to be filled. What's more, these jobs are in cities not yet announced (but you can bet they will be soon). So, are you lucky?

We are. A store is opening in Huntington Station, NY, most likely at the Walt Whitman Mall. What else is at that shopping center? Why one the busiest Apple stores in New York (besides the Manhattan store). It certainly appears that Microsoft is gunning for Cupertino on their own turf and we'll be there to cover it.

Without further ado, the unofficial Microsoft Store list as compiled by reader Travis:

  • White Plains, NY
  • Huntington Station, NY
  • Newark, DE
  • Overland Park, KS
  • Salem, NH
  • Orlando, FL
  • Arlington, VA
  • Bridgewater, NJ (Bridgewater Commons)
  • Freehold, NJ (Raceway Mall)
  • Danbury, CT (Danbury Fair Mall)

Great to see the East coast finally getting some stores. Celebrate in comments. Thanks, Travis B., for the list; Image via the Denver Post

Microsoft is slowly expanding their branded "Microsoft Stores" and Boston, MA is the latest city to finally get one (hooray for the East coast!). Currently being built at the Shops at Prudential Center in Copley Square, the store should be ready sometime this summer though no specific dates were given.

Reader erzhik was kind enough to send us some photos of the "box" that surrounds the work space at Copley (Fun fact: I used to do film projection there). It should be of no surprise that the Lumia 900 is featured on the outside artwork along with some Windows PCs.

We've also heard that an Apple Store is right across the street which seems to us like some nice strategic planning. You can read more on the announcement at the Boston Herald. Thanks, erzhik, for the pics (click to enlarge)

The popular word game Wordament went to full Xbox LIVE status this week and in our previous story on the brain straining game we mentioned how Microsoft would be promoting the app with a Wordament Tournament.

Happening right now at the Bellevue, WA Microsoft store, there's quite a crowd there evidently getting into the game. With food, giveaways and prizes (no human sacrifices though), it looks to be a fun time and a great celebration for a unique Windows Phone experience.

If you're there, send us some more pics and we'll throw 'em in this post. Also leave some comments based on what you've experienced . Pick up the free game here in the Marketplace, if you haven't already.

Update: "Here is a picture of WicketEwok in the left and DiscoPigeon on the right, two of the top players going head to head."  Thanks, Dustin S., for the photos!
