movies

Confession: I watch between 5-7 movies a week, some in the cinema, some at home, never on my phone. Heck, I saw three movies just on Saturday. So needless to say, looking up info on movies (actors, awards, year of release, who directed, etc.) is one of those things I do a lot of, in fact you'll find me fiddling with my phone during a movie, because I need to know something. Yeah, sorry I'm that guy.

While we have apps like iMDB, Flixster, etc. on our phones, they're not for everyone. Captain Movie, which just hit v1.7 and is set for Mango, is a "wrapper" app meaning it scrapes info from iMDB, Rotten Tomatoes and TMDB.org and gives it to you in a nice, Metro-y format. More interestingly, it shows you on the first screen what just opened this weekend and then you scroll over and see what's coming for the next few weeks--that's imporant for myself, because it's hard to keep track of all the different little films out there. Under each movie, you get things like cast, crew, links to trailers, trivia, comments, pictures and more--it's all the info you could want right at your finger tips.

"Metasearch over all databases, Search for Movies, Search for Persons, Movie Starts, Search and Watch Trailers, Tile image update with current Movie Starts, Information about movies(facts, cast & crew, pictures, user comments, soundtrack, release dates, story line, editions, awards) Information about persons(facts, filmography, pictures, awards)"

Supported Databases: IMDb(en,de,es,fr,it,pt), TMDb(en,de,es,fr,it,pt), OFDb(de), Cineasten(de), moviepilot(de), FILMSTARTS(de), RottenTomatoes(en)"

In addition, you can search for any movie--not just current ones, but the whole iMDB, TMDB and Rotten Tomatoes archive, making this a very powerful app. Quickly learn what awards the film one, the soundtrack info and more.

The app does fetch for $1.99 which is on the high end, no doubt. But there is a free trial and if you're a movie buff like myself, the $1.99 is well worth the investment. You also get a swanky Live Tile that pushes the latest posters to your Start screen, updating every hour or so--nice touch. Take Captain Movie for a spin here in the Marketplace. And don't forget to grab the RunPee app too, as you'll need that to nail down some bathroom breaks during your latest silver screen viewing.

Flixster gets Mango-ized in v1.6

Movie app Flixster, which offers access to showtimes, movie trailers and Rotten Tomatoes reviews, has made the leap to Mango in its newest version 1.6.

The biggest improvement is the ability to create multiple live tiles for favorite movies and theaters.  Movies that get pinned to the start screen flip between the movie poster and the Rotten Tomatoes score, along with a tomato or "splat" icon.  Version 1.6 also includes Bing mobile search integration and fast app switching.

You must have Mango installed on your device for this update.  If you do, you can get Flixster here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks to Travis S. for the tip!

Here's an app that slipped below the radar: RunPee. Yes, perhaps an oddly titled app, it's actually quite accurate to its purpose, which is to let you know the best time to take a bathroom break during the latest blockbuster movie at the cinemas.

The app is simple and to the point: it lists the latest films out in theaters, each film tells you the run time and three times to go during the movie. The first two "breaks" are positioned about 1/3 and 2/3 through the movie and provide cues to let you know that the scene is coming up.  While running back to the cinema, why not gander back at your phone and read what you're missing? Yup, someone has summarized the 4-5 minute interval you are given for you, so it'd be rude to not read it!

  • Every movie has a few scenes that either aren’t crucial to the plot, or can be easily summarized for you.
  • Every movie has a few minutes you can safely miss and not be lost when you sit back down.
  • We identify these times for you by watching the movie for ourselves.
  • RunPee provides you with both a cue to know when it's safe to leave, as well a summary of what you missed (no spoilers!).

RunPee adheres definitely adheres to the Metro design we love on Windows Phone, it's also fast and smooth to use, so we're more than pleased. Plus, this is actually useful, especially if you buy one of those "value" sodas like WPCentral reader Jim, who sent us this app reminder. (Thanks, Jim!)

The app is free and ad free in the Marketplace. You can pick it up here and have your bladder thank us later.

Using the Windows Phone 7 Connector for OS X can prove to be a drag when attempting to transfer a movie from iTunes to your handset. The progress bar gives the false impression that it's stuck and one tends to get frustrated, especially if you're like me and only synchronise your device just before you leave the house.

OS X user Marin got in touch with us to let everyone in on a more efficient way to transfer movies to your WP7 handset and not having to wait 20 or so minutes. Should you have an avi copy of the movie at hand with an mp3 soundtrack, you can use software such as MP4Tools to convert and then import into iTunes. Windows Phone Connect should then pick up the movie and be able to transfer it to your device with much more efficiency.

Unfortunately, Marin noticed a drawback to this method (which I can confirm). The movie wont be playable in iTunes (as well as Xbox 360 consoles) and a stand-alone media player (such as VLC) will have to be used. But this should be no problem if you have a separate m4v copy. Let us know if this guide works for you and how it compares to transferring m4v movies to your device.

Thanks Marin for the tip and guide!

Paramount Digital Entertainment has announced that 10 more of their titles will be coming to the Marketplace and will be exclusive to Windows Phone as part of Silverlight Enhanced Movies. We've seen this before, way back in December when Paramount first started this new media-style,  Aside from just watching the movies, the new Silverlight Enhanced Movies include the ability to bookmark, create and share clips, and search for people and products in the films.  There is even a trivia game which will allow users to share results with each other over social networking sites.

The Paramount films will be available in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain.  Right now you can get Mean Girls and School of Rock for $9.99, and each week a new title will be available.  Keep and eye out for True Grit, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Waiting For “Superman,” The Last Airbender, Zoolander, Gi Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, Beowulf  and The Italian Job.  An ecclectic mix, for sure.  Hopefully, more will be on the way.

Earlier today we mentioned that Bitbop was available for Windows Phone 7 in Beta form.  Similar to Hulu, Bitbop brings streaming television to your Windows Phone.  Shows are commercial free and can be downloaded to your phone or streamed.

Our first impressions of Bitbop are good.  The app has a polished feel to it, there's a decent selection of shows and movies to choose from and the menu system is nice.  The option to download episodes and movies is nice for those times you know you'll be in a poor reception area or without access to Wifi.

Bitbop has a free 60 day trial and a full subscription is running $9.99 a month.  You can find your copy of the Beta here at the Marketplace.  Keep in mind that this is a beta version and glitches may still be present.

While we have been hearing for sometime now from developers about writing apps for Windows Phone 7, one of the biggies, Fandango has also thrown their hat in the ring in agreement.

In an interview with ComputerWorld, Darren Cross, head of business development at Fandango had this to mentioned that they  "...built a WP7 app from the ground up with two internal developers and outside contractors over a three-month period".

He also noted that it took about the same time to develop the app as it did for Android, but no surprise, Android is proving difficult with all the different devices and UI overlays--something with which WP7 will avoid due to its strict uniform hardware requirements.

Having been using the Android version for awhile now (it just hit 2.0) and also recently having played with the Windows Phone 7 version in NYC (see above picture), I have to say that Fandango has great ideas when it comes to mobile and users should be quite happy with the final app.

First look: IMDB on Windows Phone 7

One of the surprises today was the inclusion of the popular movie site IMDB.com. The standalone app is extremly fast, smooth and chalk full of movie info goodness.

Here are a couple of shots of that app in action after the break. More to come later!

In preparation for Windows Phone 7, Microsoft is rolling out a beta-preview update for some Xbox users that features some new things including access to the Zune Marketplace, a re-designed UI and streaming video content (reported here earlier). The full preview contains: "ESPN on Xbox LIVE, Zune music, Netflix search, the new Xbox LIVE dashboard, and new updates to Zune video and Family Settings "

The new UI is very minimalist, having removed the next and previous "rows" from view and instead makes them just text when not highlighted. The effect is much cleaner looking now and truth be told, it's also much faster.

The Zune Marketplace allows you to buy or rent TV/movies in Standard or High Definition for various prices points ~200-300 points to rent ($3-4 roughly); ~800 points to buy (~$10).  Rentals are for 24 hours, whereas buying it allows you to stream or download (and later can sync to our devices with Windows Phone 7). The movie, TV and video selection id decent with content mostly geared to males aged 15-35).

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to stream music or podcasts directly from your Zune account and it's not clear if that is something they are planning. But overall the update is looking quite nice and we're pleased..

We'll have more coverage and an HD video up, probably in the AM tomorrow (as soon as our video camera shows up). Ask any questions in comments and we'll try to answer. For now, you can check out some more snapshots of the new UI and Zune Marketplace after the break!

Update: Received some clarification via email "...with Zune Pass, our monthly music subscription service, you stream or download as many songs as you like from the Zune Marketplace and listen to them for as long as you hold your subscription – on your PC, Windows Phone, Xbox, or in any browser via zune.net".  Sweet!

Microsoft just announced their international roll-out of the Zune music and entertainment service to more than 20 countries this fall. Seeing as the Zune marketplace and software is at the core of Windows Phone 7, this announcement is not too surprising, but it is welcomed nonetheless.

Beginning this fall (we bet October), Microsoft will make the Zune services available in U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain and 15 other European countries (part of that EFIGS list, no doubt). In addition, we'll see the new Zune software bumped to v4.7 which will add the Windows Phone 7 device support (goodbye ActiveSync!).

The Zune marketplace allows syncing of music, videos, podcasts (audio and video), pictures, games/applications and will now includes the ability to watch HD movies:

The updated Zune software will also enable instant streaming of high-definition movies, allowing you to watch some Zune Marketplace movies in HD, with no download time, directly on a Windows PC.

Consumers will now be able to purchase movies to download and watch anywhere — on the big screen in the living room with Xbox LIVE or their Windows-based PC as well as sync it to their Windows Phone 7 to enjoy on the go.

Huzzah! We like this a lot.

Prices in the U.S. will remain the same at $14.99/month for the Zune Pass (not required), which gives unlimited music downloads and the ability to "keep" 10 MP3s a month. (So much for that price reduction rumor).

No word on Mac support, but we're assuming Microsoft will do something about that in the future as well--after all, large updates to our new phones are reliant on desktop-syncing (with small updates available OTA).

What can we say? We love the Zune marketplace, Zune Pass and the ability for '3 screen' support of all our music, podcasts, pictures and now HD movies and TV. We can't wait till this all comes together in a few weeks...you?

Read the full presser after the break.

Mini-Review: Flix (dedicated movie-showtimes)

Flix is a nice freeware app that has been around since mid-2009. Devoted only to movie theaters and showtimes, we hadn't reported on it before because, well to be honest, it had a lot of potential but also quite a few hiccups too.

LAS VEGAS -- Carriers everywhere must be shaking in their boots at this one, as Microsoft just showed off live Netflix streaming on Windows Phone 7 at MIX10.

Live. Movies. Streamed. On Netflix. On your phone.

You can also browse the Netflix catalog and manage your queue, but being able to actually choose and watch movies on your Windows Phone is a serious game-changer. Seriously.

In what amounts to a direct shot across iTunes' bow (or it's a direct imitation of, depending on who you ask), Samsung is now offering movie downloads to customers in the UK and Germany. [via Engadget]

You get the option to buy or rent a DVD-quality flick, plus a mobile copy. For example's sake, The Dark Night's going for £16.99 (about $25 U.S.) to buy; £3.99 ($6 U.S.) to rent. The selection isn't half-bad, but we wouldn't really recommend trying to watch a movie on something smaller than an Omnia. But, hey, they're your eyes.

Check out all the fine details at www.SamsungMovies.com.

Here's a little gem that mostly slipped past the first run-through of the Netflix Mobile application (though one of our our eagle-eyed commenters spotted it - thanks, joeg!): Some movies in Netflix's library offer a trailer preview directly through the app onto your phone.

It's a little hit and miss as to which movies have the preview, so you'll just have to hunt around. But it's a nice feature in what is a very well-put together Windows Mobile application. If you haven't already, go get it here.

CES 2009 wasn't all that much of a boon for Windows Mobile, but the announcement of an official Netflix application did generate a little excitement. And nearly a month later, that app has been released.

A quick run through the app shows that it works pretty well. You can search the Netflix library, add a movie to your queue, or add it to you instant queue (what, no Xbox add?). And, of course, you can view your queue and remove movies from it or change the delivery order. Click on a movie title and you get a synopsis. Or, for more movie reviews, give a listen to the WMExperts podcast for the latest with Dieter and Mal, and, ya know, some Windows Mobile talk.

Now if only Microsoft could whip up an app to find more time to actually watch movies.

Hit up the Mobile Manager for Netflix page here. More pics after the break. Just 'cause.
