AT&T announcing the Lumia 920 tomorrow? Yup.

Bloomberg just came over the wire with a story citing two sources that AT&T and Nokia plan to unveil the Lumia 920 tomorrow.

Indeed, the story has merit because AT&T is holding a special invite-only event Thursday evening, which will focus on numerous upcoming AT&T phones, not just Windows Phone devices or the Lumia 920.

We only know about this because AT&T has the event annually and yes, we’re going to be there too.

Microsoft and Nokia just sent out press invites for a joint conference happening on Wednesday, September 5th here in New York City.

No word on what will be discussed or revealed but you can bet it has to do with Windows Phone 8 and Nokia’s upcoming lineup.

What makes this interesting is the fact that Nokia is to have Nokia World at the same time. But it now looks like that event may be downgraded for carriers and partners only with the main press event for new-phone announcement happening in New York instead.

Of course Windows Phone Central will be there live to cover the event in its entirety, seeing as this our stomping ground. Tune in here for live coverage starting at 9:30am EDT on September 5th.

Friday night we gave you a sneak peak of Nokia's launch party for the Lumia 900 that took place in New York City's Times Square. Surrounded by thousands of tourists and New Yorkers alike, Nicki Minaj took the stage to perform numerous songs in support of her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

In addition to the show, a remix of her popular single "Starships" debuted along with a full-production video shot by Nokia to coincide with the AT&T Lumia 900's official introduction to the world.

If one thing can be said of Nokia it's they know how to go big for a launch party (see London and the Lumia 800). For some reason, we can't imagine HTC, Samsung or LG ever throwing such a massive media event and for that we're excited to see Nokia championing Windows Phone (as opposed to Android).

While it remains to be see if the Lumia 900 will be the hit that it is expected to be, it certainly seems to be off to a very good start.

So we just came back from Times Square here in New York City where Nokia was throwing a lil' party right in the center of Manhattan for that Lumia 900. Turns out, as you probably know by now, that superstar Nicki Minaj was performing live. In fact, she performed three songs to a fairly massive crowd that was certainly very receptive to the whole scene.

After the songs they introduced the Nokia Lumia 900 while a DJ spun some music -- it was similar to the London-Deadmau5 event, though obviously not as massive. To the side, while the music was pumping, a giant high resolution LCD screen showed off an exciting light show leading up the Lumia 900 finally appearing.

All in all in was a fun albeit short event (it lasted about 30 minutes). While not as wow-worthy as the London 3D projection, it will certainly grab a lot of attention and is certainly some great publicity. Oh and a lot of the footage shot there will evidently be used in an upcoming video with the liver performance showing up tomorrow on Facebook.

After the break, you can check two videos we recorded (the second one starts shaky, sorry 'bout that, but it gets better). Also, we have some photos to boot.

We knew Nokia wasn't going to just sit by and let the AT&T Lumia 900 launch without an "event" to go with it. Low and behold, that whole countdown on the SmartphoneBetatest.com site was counting down to this very day.

The launch party is happening in New York City, specifically Times Square at 7 pm and is open to the public. There will be a live performance from....someone and we're hoping for something awesome visually (Lasers? Can we get some lasers?).

Of course being that we're in New York City, heck we're not too far from Times Square right now, we should be able to be there to cover the event with video, photos and a full report.

Stay tuned...

Microsoft's "Spend the Night with Windows Phone" tour continues this weekend, stopping in Chicago tonight and tomorrow. We enjoyed the New York City stop and the only downside is that the tour can't hit more cities.

Microsoft shared their coverage of the New York City event over on their Windows Phone YouTube Channel and you can check out our coverage here.  If we aren't mistaken, around the 1:54 mark in the video we think that's Dan doing his best head-banger impersonation.  Regardless it does look like Matt and Kim rocked the house.

From Chicago, the Spend the Night tour heads to these cities

  • Dallas November 16-17th
  • Los Angeles November 30th, December 1st
  • San Francisco December 6-7th.

You can RSVP for these events over at the Windows Phone Facebook page and the first twenty people to reserve for each night will bet a VIP upgrade. Space is limited so reserve your spot today.

Now that we're a bit recovered from yesterday, we can share with you how the first of many Windows Phone night parties went.

Kicking of in New York City and heading to Chicago, Dallas, LA and finally San Francisco, the show last night (and tonight) were sold out. There were so many people there last night that the line wrapped around the block--yes, New York, you came out in full force. VIPers had a special line which was much shorter, allowing them be let in first. In addition, you VIP folks get a special lounge to go to where you can relax and play with the new Windows Phones in a more relaxed atmosphere. And you get free drinks.

The event itself was pretty amazing. You had a section where you can dress like an Angry Bird and get your photo taken, there was a digital wall-of-apps, a Fruit Ninja area where you can sit and play on a dozen Windows Phones, stations everywhere with the HTC Tian, HTC Radar 4G, Samsung Focus S and the Focus Flash on display and helpful attendants to walk you through the new features. There are digital stations everywhere where you can scan your ID bracelet for a chance to win a Windows Phone as well as a Twitter contest to win some there too. The food was excellent (you get 3 food tokens) as well as some great drink mixers.

The Brooklyn native band 'Matt & Kim' took the stage at 9pm and rocked the whole place and DJs spun some great music in between. To say 'Mat & Kim' were well received is an understatement--even they had a great time as the venue turned into a full on concert at the point, with everyone enjoying their set.

All in all the mood was very festive--people were genuinely having a great time. Most importantly, they were toying with the phones, playing the games and really getting into the whole 'socially connected' theme of the party. We're told the exact same setup is traveling around to the other four cities, meaning you're in for one heck of a treat. (Note, you do have to be 21 to get into the event and they were checking IDs.)

Microsoft had a big publicity day yesterday and dare we say, they nailed it. If you can attend one of these night parties, we strongly encourage you do so as you'll have a blast. T'was a very cool time.

Take a look at some more pics after the break!

Next Monday is a big day. First off, there's a mini-press event which we'll be going to, meeting with Microsoft's Andy Lees and Joe Belfiore. Segueing into that is this publicity stunt that Microsoft is evidently doing but not revealing too much about just yet:

"If you live in or around New York City, you might want to find an excuse to wander past Herald Square sometime during the day next Monday—noon would be an especially good time—for a fun surprise we’re putting together. All I can say is we’re bringing Windows Phone to life in a big, big, way. Curious? Stay tuned…."

We think we actually know from an insider what (some) of it involves: If you're familiar with Herald Square, there's a certain historically relevant area that is known for, ahem, displays nearby. Hint, hint...

Well anyways, we'll be there all day covering the event, so don't worry--you'll get some photos and video if needed. And don't forget that night is the Windows Phone party where you can get some drinks, food, see a band and play with some new Winodws Phone hardware. We'll see you there as well.

With unlimited data packages going the route of the woolly mammoth, Windows Phone owners are leaning on Wifi connections more and more. AT&T hopes to help New York City customers this summer by providing free Wifi services at twenty six locations in twenty New York City parks.

The Mayor's Office has signed a five year initiative to provide this free service (non-AT&T customers can enjoy the free Wifi too).  All five boroughs of the City are involved and include the following parks.

  • Bronx: Joyce Kilmer Park, Bronx River Park and Devoe Park
  • Brooklyn: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Fort Greene Park, Herbert Von King Park, McCarren Park and Prospect Park
  • Manhattan: Battery Park, Thomas Jefferson Park, Central Park (multiple locations), the High Line, Holcombe Rucker Park, Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park
  • Queens: Astoria Park, Flushing Meadows Corona Park and MacDonald Park
  • Staten Island: Clove Lake Park and South Beach

AT&T Windows Phones will automatically connect to the Wifi Networks while others will have to select "attwifi" from the list of available networks on your phone. The free service begins today so if your based out of New York or just visiting, enjoy the free wifi.

Hopefully this initiative will spread to other cities in the future.  You can catch the full press release from AT&T after the break.

Now that all dust is settling on the "World wide launch event" for Windows Phone 7 next week, we're just going to summarize what we know and what we're expecting, including what devices we predict we'll see.

Events

  • 9:30am: Keynote speech by Ballmer and de la Vega (from AT&T), simulcasted to London
  • 10:15am: Hands on with AT&T's Windows Phone 7 lineup
  • 11:30am: A look at Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 "Global portfolio" aka devices for the rest of the world
  • 11:30am: HTC and T-Mobile private, press event
  • 3pm: HTC and T-Mobile public, customer event

AT&T: Ready to launch on November 8th

Runners up include the LG GW910 or maybe something from Asus.

T-Mobile: Ready to launch late November

  • HTC HD7: 5MP, 4.3" screen, 8GB storage

Yes, despite some confusion, we know for a fact HTC and T-Mobile will be on hand (in a separate location) for a special preview of their "latest device".

Of course, we'll be at all of those events during the day, covering it all for you folks. And yes, I'll be joined by our very own Phil for a very special, curmudgeony day, plus George and Dieter handling our server-side setup (to keep it all going someone has to feed the hamsters).

We've been saying it for weeks now: Microsoft will be launching Windows Phone 7 in New York City on October 11th and while others doubted, it looks to be confirmed by none other than Microsoft.

What's even more odd, is that T-Mobile is the featured guest and we bet a certain HTC HD7 will be the star. Guess that rumor we heard about AT&T's exclusivity being only two-weeks may be accurate after all:

Some confusion though: there may be two events, one for the big media, the second for the public (Edit: first event is the AT&T Open House). Either way, we'll be there at 3pm doing our best to cover what we can, while you sit back and relax.

Wish we could tell you that there was something new or amazing in this extensive look at Windows Phone 7 being demoed last night in New York City, but alas it's just more eye candy. InToMobile did a good job though and at least the video is top notch.

We do get to see some pink tiles (WP7--for her) and how they can be moved around as well as the general guided tour. We wonder if WP7 has a native picture editor in it, sort of like the one in Windows Mobile, you know to crop, resize and do some basic fixes--we're betting on no.

Anyways, watch the full video after the jump.

You should hear Malatesta's tale about making it to the Oct. 6 launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 with just seconds to spare. It's classic. Especially the part about surviving the dude playing jazz flute. But that's for another time.

Anyhoo, what got him there in time for the keynote was Google Maps, and its inclusion of NYC subway maps. They've been there for a while now, but Google's recently publicly announced them as a feature in the Layers. To turn it on (or just test it if you're outside the city), point the map to NYC, then go to Menu>Layers and turn on the Tranisit lines. Zoom in and you can get station info. It's That simple.
