news reader

NewsSpot is a Google Reader for your Windows Phone and we were able to get a sneak peak of the Windows Phone 8 version of the news reader. We were pleased with what we saw with NewsSpot and found it to be a capable reader.  The Windows Phone 8 version has cleared certification and is now available in the Windows Phone Store.

For those not familiar with NewsSpot, it has a two-way synchronization for unread and starred articles that only synchronizes what needs to be delivered from your Google Reader account to your Windows Phone. Add article sharing with a ton of sources (Evernote, Instapaper, Pocket, etc.), a nice search engine, offline content and NewsSpot isn't a shabby Google Reader.

For those of you who have been around Windows Phone for a long time, you should know of Weave news reader as it’s been one of the hallmark apps on our platform since the beginning. Always fast and fluid, the app was an exceptional RSS reader and we always recommended it.

Starting with the last update and now version 8.0 just released today, Weave is now more than just RSS as it’s a professionally run service that goes beyond just ripping feeds from sites. That’s the reason for its seemingly high $9.99 price tag (don’t worry, there’s a free ad-supported version too). No doubt that is a lot of bread but the reason may be worth it if you’re a news feed junkie.

Weave doesn’t just pull RSS feeds but rather articles go through their servers first which reformat it, remove excess HTML coding, prep YouTube videos for viewing and make the article format universal and flawless. End result? You get low-bandwidth usage, fast loading articles with superb formatting for mobile use. You see a video image? Just tap and play. As far as we know, no other app on Windows Phone does all of that and its those server costs that result in a higher app price tag.

We took a look at NewsSpot back in October when it was last updated, things have now progressed to the point where the app has now reached the lofty heights of version 3.0. With the latest version comes the all-important support for Windows Phone 8.

NewsSpot is a Google Reader client and works hard to help you sort through all that is good and all that needs to be ignored in your quest for relevant content. The app has plenty of Windows Phone 8 specific features in tow, we take a quick look and invite you along for the ride.

Weave is a popular news reader for your Windows Phone and it was recently updated to version 4.0. The update gives the news reader a re-design and a respectable amount of customizability.

The update also brings a few under the hood tweaks that gives the app faster performance. Weave is pre-loaded with thirty three categories including world, financial, deals, fashion, videogames, technology and more. From there you can edit and add to the Weave feeds to better match your needs.

Russia Today, the state-sponsored news network, is basically Russia’s answer to the BBC. The Russia Today TV channel is the second-most watched foreign news channel in the US, and the Russia Today website RT.com (which makes me think of Retweeting) is available in English and several other languages.

In April, an indie developer named Jampot published an RSS reader for Windows Phone named Russia Today. That app leaves much to be desired since the links simply open up in the phone’s web browser. Now the real Russia Today team has released an official app entitled RT News. Why they didn’t ask for the previous app to be removed so they could use its name I don’t know – perhaps it seemed like too much trouble. At any rate, it’s great that we have an official app now, but it still has plenty of room for improvement.

Pulse app updated to v1.1, gets less laggy

The popular (and free) Pulse RSS news app just got a bump this morning to version 1.1 adding some background-updating and some Mango fast-app switching. It's also substantially less laggy now, no doubt due to the Magno-recompile.

Unfortunately, not too many other features were added as far as we can tell--still no Google Reader integration, nor ability to add custom feeds (just search). Nor are there any Live Tiles, so in that sense, the alternate Fuse app is still significantly out pacing it and may be a good choice for those who need more.

Edit: Ah yes, as some folks in comments remind us, this app has always been Mango-ized and has a uncustomizable Live Tile. So what's new? Perhaps just bug fixes and generic "performance enhancments". Enjoy! We're sticking with Fuse.

For those who like free, basic but still solid, you can pick up Pulse v1.1 here in the Marketplace.

There are a few "must have" apps for Windows Phone and we think Weave is one of 'em (see early review). So it's exciting to see it hit the big version 3.0 after some extensive beta testing, which we were lucky to see first hand. The free version (ad-supported) is now available for your usage and the paid, no-ad version is coming later this week (selectable backgrounds held it up, but hey...as SelesGames says, you get selectable backgrounds). The new animations, design and features make this app even better, so we so no reason why if you haven't already, you shouldn't give it a spin.

Features include:

  • 33 pre-loaded categories including world, financial, deals, fashion, video games, technology, and sports news just to name a few!
  • Add new categories at any time
  • Over 180 pre-loaded, high-quality news sources including CNN, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Engadget, USA Today, NY Times, IGN, Entertainment Weekly, and many more!
  • Feed search – you can search for new feeds by topic or website name
  • Easily manage your feeds and categories via the settings screen
  • Preview articles with a touch of a finger
  • View full articles at your leisure
  • Share articles with your friends, via email!
  • Post an article to your Facebook wall!
  • Tweet an article to your Twitter followers!
  • Send an article to Instapaper!

Personally, we're waiting for the paid version because it rocks pretty hard. But for only the occasional news reader out there, this free edition is solid as can be. Grab it here in the Marketplace, let us know in comments your thoughts on their redesign.

USA Today hits the Marketplace

The USA Today app is now available over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. It brings the latest news stories, sports scores and weather to your Windows Phone in a nice, clean looking package.

Key features include:

  • Headline News: Browse and read stories from News, Money, Sports, Life, Tech and Travel. Stories can be shared via email, text message, Twitter, or Facebook.
  • Sports Scores: Review the latest sports scores for NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, college football and college basketball. Filter college scores down to your favorite conferences.
  • Weather: Get live weather conditions (provided by AccuWeather), up-to-the minute personal radar and the five day forecast at your current location, or for a set of your favorite locations. Review national weather maps including Doppler radar, temperature and precipitation forecasts. USA Today will also utilize your phone's location services to show your current weather on the front page.
  • Pictures: Flip through the day’s best photos from news, sports, celebrities, science, travel and weather or play them back as a slideshow. Share your favorite photo galleries with friends via email.

You also have a featured called USA TODAY Snapshots where you can scan through USA TODAY Snapshots, and vote on a poll question for each. Settings are simple in that you can turn on/off location services and adjust the articles font sizes.

In just tinkering with the USA Today app for a short period, it makes a nice first impression. The app puts a lot of information at your finger tips. USA Today is a free app and you can find it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Tip of the hat to Derek for tipping us on this!

Microsoft's experimental news feed program, called Project Emporia, just received a nice upgrade to version 1.2--it's first update in three months. Hailing from Microsoft's Research FUSE labs, this is one of those apps where you are helping Microsoft "test" some new ideas out.

In essence, it's a news reader with the ability to choose by category e.g. technology, politics, etc. But then you can vote up or down stories to better refine your likes, giving you a more tailored user experience:

Every day we face an information overflow; data is coming at us through so many channels that it is difficult to weed out the gems that are important to us from all the noise. For those who are not social media mavens, the whole problem can be intimidating.

Project Emporia offers a solution to this. It sifts through ever-evolving news streams to identify hot news stories, categorizes them into topic areas and ranks them, and then presents them to you in a friendly and easy-to-use UI. With Project Emporia you get relevant stories on topics of YOUR choice.

You can influence how future stories are chosen for you, one vote at a time. Your votes will improve the relevance of your news story choices not just for you, but for every other user as well.

Previous versions were "meh", often being slow and not that fun. Version 1.2 though makes the app much better, in our opinion, since it's now more zippy, has more options available and is basically fun to experiment with. Here are some of the major 1.2 new features:

  • Unified Web and WP7 accounts
  • Facebook and Twitter integration
  • Improved sharing via Twitter
  • Social channels

You can grab Projecct Emporia right here in the Marketplace.

Samsung updates the Now Hub

Samsung has updated its Windows Phone 7 application, Now, to includ Facebook and Twitter support. For added touches, a nifty audio jingle has also been added to accompany the opening animations of the news reader.

Top news stories, pulled from Rueters, can now be shared through your Facebook or Twitter account as well as via SMS or email. Weather information is still pulled from Accuweather.com and your stock information is provided through Yahoo Finance. While the Facebook and Twitter support are the obvious new additions, the app seems to have a little more zip to it suggesting that overall performance tweaks were also part of the update.

The Now Hub is a free application exclusive to Samsung Windows Phones and the update should be listed in your Marketplace app under "updates". If for some reason you don't have the Now Hub on your Samsung phone, you can find the full app in the Samsung Zone in the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to David M. for the tip!

Software Review (Windows Phone 7): AP Mobile

We first looked at AP Mobile when it launched for Windows Mobile. The news reader presented today's news and weather in a well laid out fashion. AP Mobile has made the transition to Windows Phone 7 and is a free app over at the Marketplace.

One of the nice design features of Windows Phone 7 is the metro or hub design. It allows applications to lay out information in an easily accessible manner that is easy to navigate around. AP Mobile takes full advantage of this design.

The main hub of AP Mobile consists of:

  • The Front Page: Here is where your top stories are listed.
  • Media Pages: This is a gallery of images from the day's stories.
  • Category Page: Here is the break down of the broad headline categories. They include such items as your local news, weather showbiz, and technology. Your search command and settings menu also rests on this page.

To see what type impression AP Mobile for Windows Phone 7 left with us, ease on past the break.
