Nokia Lumia 800

Tesco’s in the past were perhaps a little confused about Windows Phone. That is all set to change as they are now kindly offering the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800 for use on their pay monthly tariffs. The Lumia 800 is being offered free of charge provided you are willing to commit to a two-year contract at £22.50 per month, available here.

The Lumia 800 is not alone in its fight for the hearts and minds of the UK’s grocery buying punters, the 710 is here too. The Lumia 710 sports the same internals as the Lumia 800 but is a little more budget friendly due to its construction techniques. Tesco are offering that on a similar 24 month contract for £20.00 a month.

If you are someone that prefers to have his or her phone without the contract shackles, Tesco offer the Lumia 800 to purchase on Pay as you go for a hefty £359.97. I will note that you can buy the device cheaper on sites such as Expansys.

Tesco mobile stocking Windows Phones is great news for the platform. Lumia handsets have proven to be popular with the phone buying public. From a recent article, it would seem that the Lumia brand has in fact overtaken Windows Phone in terms of brand awareness.

An interesting theme is emerging in that retailers are not stocking HTC, Samsung or ZTE devices. I think this has to do with the scale of advertising the Lumia devices have received. Nokia have solid relations with retailers and they seem to be capable of leveraging that advantage to push Windows Phone to places it has not been before. I wonder if Microsoft’s other partners had been more active in pushing Windows Phone earlier, instead of their Android offerings would we have seen more traction today?

Tesco as a company have a good relationship with Microsoft, so one has to wonder why it’s taken them so long to get to Windows Phone. After all, they have been offering a Tescos shopping app in the marketplace almost from the start.

So, will any of you be popping in to your local Tesco’s to buy some milk and a Lumia in the near future? Do you think the recent Hollyoaks tie up is getting retailers excited about taking on Windows Phones? Why do you think Tesco are offering this now with Windows Phone 8 around the proverbial corner? I am always keen to hear your thoughts in the comments!

It feels like it was just yesterday that we ran the story about Nokia stealing the top-spot with regards to Windows Phone market-share.

Analytic firms often throw around numbers, and for the most part we just believe them. This does of course make sense, as any reputable firm would much rather keep a good name, than make up random numbers. But it's always good to see actual data backing up what they tell us. Enter: app statistics!

So I thought now would be a good time to checkout the usage of my apps on a device level. My first app was published just 6 months ago, so obviously that is the furthest back I can see.

Vodacom just held a really amazing launch party to welcome the Nokia Lumia 800 (and the 710 at a later stage) Windows Phone to South Africa. This particular event was the one we previously spoke about being held in Midrand.

Nokia South Africa recently announced that the Lumia 800 would be available from the 7th February. However yesterday we learned of a promotion starting tomorrow for the phone. The latter turns out to be correct and will most probably mark the start of the rollout to stores nationwide.

Nice to see the Nokia Lumia 800 getting some air-time, especially up in Sweden who just official launched the device, well, yesterday actually.

The above ad is from Swedish carrier Halebop, which we're told is owned by Telia (the largest carrier in Sweden). We've also been informed that, roughly speaking what is being said in the commercial is  "Dark and cold outside? Then I think it's time for a surprise, a mobile that is also social".

Certainly using the Lumia 800's colors against the black and white snow gives a great contrast and is quite eye catching.

Either the folks at Nokia Germany have lost the plot, or they've come up with an ingenious promotional stunt. They've put Lumia 800s in ice. Yes, ice. In the above video, you'll witness the frenzied public attempting to bash, melt and shatter the ice to release the handsets (which are hopefully just props). Should they free the Lumia 800, the winners are presented with one to take away with them for free. Really cool advertising there (pun intended).

Australia's online mobile retailer MobiCity is now offering the Nokia Lumia 800 for $679.  The unlocked handset can be used on Optus, Telstra, Vodaphone and Three.  It carries a 12-month warranty, though an extended one can be added at the time of purchase.  In addition to the standard accessories, MobiCity is offering a free gift, which includes your choice of a case, screen protector, car charger, or free gift wrapping.  You can also opt for a discounted Jawbone Prime headset instead.

Note: They have an "add extra memory" option but don't fooled, the Lumia 800 cannot take additional memory cards to expand memory.

For those with an extra $689 CAD ($682 US) to spare, you can pick up the Nokia Lumia 800 unlocked from NCIX. The phone is normally $50 more but there's a special web-only deal till December 14th. For those curious on the bands:

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz; HSPA/WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz.

What makes that cool is even folks here on AT&T can pick up this bad boy and get HSPA+ due to the inclusion of their 1900MHz WCDMA frequency--just something to think about.

The only bad thing about this is the color: black. Sure, black is always awesome but we wouldn't mind picking up this guy in Cyan at all--stand out a little, you know? Still, we'll take what we can so head on over to NCIX to place your order.

Looks like we have an update for the Nokia Lumia 800 rolling out. According to an article over at Nokia Conversations, the update includes the following:

  • Charging improvements
  • Voicemail notification improvement
  • Replying to mail improved for Microsoft Exchange 2003 users
  • Improved display switching in bright light
  • Improved audio quality

While charging improvements is indeed listed, we should not confuse this with the planned battery capacity increase (currently being limited by software), which Nokia has said will arrive early next year and will be accompanied by more improvements (fixing anything that's not included in this one). We took a look at issues reported by early adopters of the Lumia 800, so these two updates are welcome indeed. Unfortunately, no Internet Sharing was included in this update for us, there's always next month.

  • Firmware version: 1600.2475.7720.11414 > 1600.2479.7740.11451

Thanks to everyone who sent in the tips!

Here's a site we hope to see more of: ordinary people lining up to get a Nokia Windows Phone. We mentioned the Singapore launch for the Lumia 800 a few days ago and now we have some photos of people braving the...ummm...temperate conditions for nearly 8 hours to get their 800's.

Of course those first 100 people did get a free Xbox 360 with a Kinect for their suffering, so we suppose we'd line up for that too. Great to see, regardless.

Arnaud Michelet, developer behind the France traffic app on Windows Phone, has provided some statistics regarding device usage and the above graph shows something interesting (particularly for anti-WP Nokia fans). Nokia has been pushing hard, not just only in the UK, but France too. This shows with the line for the Lumia 800 shooting up through the roof, and still climbing steeply after taking the lead from the Samsung Omnia 7.

Should this chart be taking into account as a valid indicator on how well the Lumia 800 is performing in France, it also shows that majority of new owners are migrating from other platforms, since the massive incline is not met by a steep drop across the board for first generation handsets. While these aren't official numbers from Nokia (though they back up previous sales reports), it's worth checking out and feeling good about the data in-time for the festive holiday.

RegHardware is hosting a poll where the first vote is for "Mobile of the Year", and the Nokia Lumia 800 (our review) is the Windows Phone entrant. The handset is up against the likes of the iPhone 4S, Blackberry Bold 9900, and Samsung Galaxy S II. So be sure to head on over and vote for the Lumia 800 along with Windows Phone for "Smartphone OS of the Year". There are also a few more questions in the poll including carrier of the year and most useful app.

While the HTC Titan and Samsung Focus S are both proving to be fairly popular in the U.S., we've heard analysts down Nokia for Lumia 800 sales and the manufacturer bouncing back with positive statements. MyNokiaBlog have compiled some feedback (published at Nokia Connections) from carriers and retailers in Europe, which all show positive signs on how well the Lumia 800 is selling. Nokia (and Microsoft) have the daunting task to help train sales staff in stores to push out Windows Phone handsets and is needed after reports we've received from those who reside in the U.S., Europe and (more recently) Australia. We're going to leave this to the employees at UK carriers and retailers to explain how things are going.

Joe Moody, Orange:

"This phone is the best phone out there by far. I have managed to switch 15 customers within a week to pre order the Lumia, I love the device so much I can’t wait to get one when I’m due a new phone, the customers that are interested in apple iPhones or galaxy s 2 I manage to persuade some to go for a Lumia."

Ian McLaren, Carphone Warehouse:

"The Lumia is flying off the shelves, especially from one who has really taken the training on board and pitching them to everyone. The main things that are selling the phone are the design, superb screen and the way the social networks are integrated into the phone OS so don’t need to keep switching apps and all the messages are compiled into one thread.

From a standing start, Nokia have really grabbed people’s attention with the Lumia and the advertising is starting to pay off as people are coming in and asking about the handset, and asking to upgrade to it."

Looks like Orange is on the ball when it comes to colour variations of the Nokia Lumia 800 as they've now added the magenta model on their website. The only problem is this colour choice is "web exclusive" so customers will only be able to order it online and not have a test run in-store. This is an odd decision as surely a pink handset would attract folk into a store?

This falls in line with our release coverage where we stated that magenta shouldn't be too far behind cyan, should you be waiting for anything other than the usual black. We're looking forward to the magenta Lumia 800 rolling out across the UK too, hopefully more details will come to light soon.

Over at the XDA Developers forum, member z33dev33l has created a thread where he explains that a Nokia Lumia 800 (our review) survived an accidental drop test carried out by his one year old offspring. Before you ask, yes the one year old is a Windows Phone owner. Staying at a hotel (two stories up), the child dropped his Lumia 800 from the balcony where the handset hit the concrete floor below, just inches from the pool edge.

The device itself took the fall graciously with its polycarbonate casing. The only issue is a loose power button, which is still functional. z33dev33l has stated that he can't locate any scratches or marks and the loose button is the only outcome of the two story fall and concrete landing. See the photo above for a blurry look at the loose button, note it's difficult to see as it's flush with the body. Should this test be real then it's an achievement for the Lumia 800 and it's strong encasing. Remember that when purchasing the handset, included in the box is a protective cover too - just in case you happen to hand it to a one year old.

Yesterday, we mentioned that Clove UK was going to begin offering the Nokia Lumia 800, unlocked and SIM free in December. Now we got word that Expansys USA and Phones4U are both offering the same deal--one cheaper, one more expensive.

First, Expansys USA is offering the black Lumia 800 for a whopping $789. So, you should probably start saving now if you want it by Christmas and we doubt anyone will be picking it up as a gift. The phone will work on AT&T's 3G network but lacks the HSPA+ bands, so keep that in mind--you may want to wait a few months for an "official" offering from the Death Star, especially since you'll not only get HSPA+ but rumored LTE as well.

Next up is Phones4U. They too have the black, unlocked Lumia 800 that you can buy now, so forget that pre-order. The price there is £399.95, which isn't half bad--heck, at $618 it is cheaper for Americans to order it overseas than locally (too bad Phones4U doens't ship overseas). Plus, they also have the Cyan version available, which is a bit of a rarity and we think gives Phones4U the edge here.

Now this is pretty exciting (unless you couldn't give two hoots about diagnostic reporting). Nanapho.jp has come across the Nokia Lumia 800 On-Device Diagnostic Tool, which will enable the user to perform tests and receive readouts for the accelerometer, battery, gyroscope (if supported), and more.

What's semi-interesting is the Gyroscope test reports that the Lumia 800 doesn't have support, which we're already aware of, but the tools are still an insight should you be into this kind of access. To access the tools, simply enter "##634#" on the call screen and it'll load up.

A while back Clove, a UK mobile phone retailer, announced on their blog that their stock of unlocked Nokia Lumia 800s would be delayed until January 2012. Today, they've stated that the date has been pushed forward to December 1st. Ordering via Clove will set the buyer back by £369 (excluding VAT), not a bad price at all.

So how many of you will be picking one up? Remember, it requires a microSIM card, so hot-swapping phones on your carrier of choice could be an issue. And while you wait, check out our review of the Lumia 800.

We only recently covered Nokia's statement about sales of the Lumia and what the mission is for the manufacturer, and now we have some indications to back the positive statement published by the company. For starters, we can see in the above shot that Vodafone UK is selling the Lumia 800 (our review) in both black and cyan (pre-order) well enough for them to be sitting in 2nd and 3rd place behind the disappointing iPhone 4S. Not only that but take a look at the customer review rating for the iPhone 4S, and now look at the black Lumia 800.

We know Nokia has had a tough ride, especially since they ditched Symbian to pair up with Microsoft and dedicate resources to Windows Phone alone. Not only shares, but the minds of customers, have been bouncing around, following Stephen Elop's moves closely. The manufacturer has had little over six months to produce a Windows Phone since the partnership with Microsoft was announced.

According to a report over at Reuters, Nokia is attempting to keep the smiles with releasing an optimistic statement:

"Lumia 800 sales in the U.K. are off to an excellent start. Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history. By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the U.K."

As noted by Gigaom, the above statement is pretty vague and with no sale data published it's difficult to tell whether the company is actually doing extremely well with the launch or is attempting to liven the mood.. Were we really expecting a massive sell out? Probably not. Windows Phone is still young and requires much promotion to sway the minds of potential adopters. Nokia has come to the game with nothing and have spent erratically to pick up momentum for not only the Lumia family of handsets, but the platform as well. It's a tough assignment for a manufacturer who has been in trouble for some time.

Nokia has been busy focusing on "The Amazing Everyday" marketing campaign, with hosting impressive promotion events, setting up advertising effectively (including Heathrow Airport) and working closely with U.K. carriers. As we previously reported, the Finnish manufacturer has tripled their marketing expenditure, which should be setting the ground for their volume introduction of handsets in 2012.

The Lumia 710 and 800 (our review) are entry handsets, the first two from the Finnish company. They've continuously stated that 2012 will be the year for both Nokia and Windows Phone, while 2011 will see one or two devices to see the year through and show what Nokia is capable of. A turnaround that Nokia requires will not happen with the launch of two rushed devices on a new platform. This is going to be a marathon, just like Microsoft with Windows Phone. We'll have to wait and see how the two companies work together to make both the platform and Nokia handsets a success on a global scale.
