official app

It's time for another update to our official Windows Phone app, and this one brings functionality many of you have requested: lock screen wallpapers. If you're a die-hard fan of the site and just can't get enough Windows Phone news, or even want to bring the news front and center for a week or so, you can enable our app as your wallpaper provider to get the latest headlines on your lock screen. Our wallpaper colours can also be customised with the full range of Windows Phone accents, and you'll even get article images appearing when you're using our flip tile. Find and enable all of these options from the app's settings screen.

That's not the only new feature thought, we've also finally included support for playing videos through Metrotube, switched to the Nokia advertising exchange (for free users only of course) and updated Unification support with in-line images. See below for the full changelist as well as a few samples of what you can do when customising our lock screen.

Back in April we told you that the official Tapatalk app, which is on iOS and Android now, is coming to Windows Phone 8. That app is now in private beta, which means only one thing: it’s close, darn close, to being released.  Additionally, a Windows Phone 7.x version is in the works.

For all you forum hounds out there, having an official Tapatalk client is great for not only continuing the discussion on the go, but for discovering new ones as well. Tapatalk, as some of you may not know, powers many of today’s discussion forums on the ‘net—they’re like the Disqus of more in-depth, online communities.

You may have noticed an update available for our app this morning, and perhaps you're curious as to what has changed? It's not the most exciting patch but we are aware of issues that users of 512MB devices have been experiencing with the app and are working hard to try and fix these problems. Patch 4.1.3 is intended to fix said problems by reducing the memory footprint of the app with slightly lower quality image when running on the lower spec devices such as the Lumia 520, 620 or 720.

If you have been experiencing any kind of crashes with the app please update to this version. However if that still doesn't work for you it would be incredibly helpful if you got in touch via app@wpcentral.com. As much as the 1 star reviews in the store make it clear you have a problem it makes it impossible for us to diagnose and fix that problem! Now that we've cleared that up, there were a couple of other things in the patch that were ready at the time, see below for the full changelist.

Good old Microsoft has released an official Live Event app for Windows Phone 8 devices that will allow users to stream tomorrow’s live NEXT Xbox announcement to their devices.

Microsoft has previously has such an app for their Xbox 360 console, allowing users at home to watch on their big’ol TVs but they didn’t have anything available for their Windows Phone lineup. Now, they seemed to have rectified that with the official Live Video Player app.

We’ll just do this as a PSA post as there probably no new features on board, but just 24 hours after being released to the Store, the official (and new) YouTube app got an update.

Version 3.0.0.1 is now live on the marketplace, and if a 0.0.0.1 update sounds minor, we’ll, you’d probably be right. Most likely this is a quick bug fix for something that could affect a lot of users, so it’s good to see such a high profile app get its due.

Although we have the stellar and frequently updated Beem Plus for Windows Phone to deliver your thumping Digitally Imported (www.di.fm) electronic music, having an official app always gives a nod of true authenticity and some legitimacy to the platform.

So it’s quite exciting to see DI.fm list Windows Phone as “Coming in 2013…” under their supported apps section. Hoorah!

We get some criticism from people for liking Domino’s Pizza (because we live in New York) but let’s be clear: Domino’s is pretty delicious and serves a roll in our culinary selection on occasion. It’s like what Taco Bell is to Mexican food—it’s not the same or better, just different.

So with that preamble, we’re excited and miffed to see the official Domino’s app get updated for Windows Phone 8—with some killer features too. The bad news is it’s only for the UK and Ireland, which as an American I find…odd.

What’s new in version 1.1.1.0 just released to the Store today? Glad you asked.

Auto Trader (www.autotrader.co.uk), the popular website for those who are seeking a new or used vehicle to purchase, has just released an official app for the Windows Phone Store. We started playing with the app for a few minutes and already we're hooked. The interface is absolutely gorgeous, definitely one of the more well-design apps available on the platform. It's not all about looks though, and Auto Trader doesn't fall short when it comes to functionality.

Following on from our mostly successful launch of v3.8/9 of the Windows Phone Central app, there are a few loose ends to tie up in the code, thus we present the next update, v3.10 for Windows Phone 7 and v3.11 for Windows Phone 8. After a few problems with the store, everything looks to be resolved.

Whilst we're afraid we can't promise any exciting new features, we have resolved several problems, some of which we know were frustrating our community a little! You can pick up the update here in the store (either the free version or paid) or see below for the full changelist, and please consider voting for the app in Microsoft's next app star competition.

Here's the big one folks, we present to you the v3.8 update to our official app, live now in the marketplace.

Available on both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8, this update is the product of several months of work migrating to WP8 natively, but we've also thrown in a few new features to keep things fresh and exciting.

This update supports Windows Phone 8 fully, including the 720P screen resolution (which should make HTC 8X owners very happy), as well as full support for all 3 tile sizes on Windows Phone 7.8 and 8. It's taken a fair amount of time to bring the codebase over to Windows Phone 8 in a way that allows us to fully support version 7 wherever possible. Hopefully you will never see the product of that work as everything will appear seamless, in which case we can now focus on bringing some very cool stuff to version 4.

Color us surprised but for the first time ever, the GSMA have released an official Windows Phone app for their annual Mobile World Congress. Representing the largest consortium of mobile operators and OEMs, Mobile World Congress is kind of a big deal for mobile

The official app just landed on the Windows Phone Store and it’s actually done quite well. Instead of needing constant updates through the Store, which could be time consuming, it can update its database over-the-air each time there is a scheduling or venue change. Quite nifty and is akin to how Cocktail Flow operates.

For those in the media with Windows Phones or the few of you industry folks who are headed to the massive Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of the month, you’ll want to grab the new official Windows Phone 8 NFC Badge App.

The GSMA Press Office just sent out an email for Android and Windows Phone users on how to get the app and enable the pass features. Starting last year, physical badges for MWC had an NFC chip in them and this  year they’re going a step further by using NFC-enabled apps. The pass is necessary to get in to the tightly secured event which attracts nearly 60,000 attendees over a few days.

We’ve just published the v3.3 update to our app out into the global marketplace, this release contains some important bug fixes and brings the app in line with our overall site branding.

Most important of which is a fix for the dark tile issue (where the tile would fail to render), the tile now may take some time to render correctly but in testing has a 100% render success rate finally. Please note: you will need to re-pin the main tile and forums tile to your start screen in order to see the correct new versions.

The last time we reported on Stitcher Radio was literally one year ago. The popular online radio streaming service, popular for podcasts and music fans alike, was looking to have an app for Windows Phone in “early 2012”.

Obviously, that did not happen. And truth be told, we forgot that it even existed until an email dropped in our inbox today, noting that the company is looking to hire a Windows Phone dev for a mobile app, specifically for Windows Phone 8.

Good news for those of you who live near a Macy's US store as they have released a shiny new app for the holidays just for Windows Phone (it says for it’s for Windows Phone 8 but will install on 7.x too).

The app has some nice features, which make it more than just window dressing for the store or company. Launching the app will treat you to holiday gift guides that remind us of eBay’s method by drilling down by gender and category for gift recommendations—not a bad idea for those who have no inkling of what presents to buy this year...

There aren't many things that I am certain of in this world. But something I know for a fact is that after a big app update, the public are amazing at finding bugs that a developer would miss.

With that simple fact I direct you here to find the v3.1 update to our official Windows Phone app. This is entirely a bug-fixing release which addresses several areas mostly within the forums, a few are listed below...

You may have noticed a lot of changes around here lately, whether it be our desktop and mobile websites, or on our forums, we’ve been rather busy. Of course, not to be outdone by all this change, it’s time for our app to see an update, and it’s a fairly major one at that.
